    Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

    5 out of 5 stars A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17

    I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
    Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

    4 out of 5 stars For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

    Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

    The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

    Touching on the Celtic, the Renaissance and the Baroque, these six women interweave them into sumptuous improvisations. Ensemble Galilei consists of Liz Knowles on fiddle, Deborah Nuse on bagpipes and fiddle, Sarah Weiner on oboe, recorders and whistle, Sue Richards on harp, Carolyn Ann Surrick on gamba, and Jan Hagiwara on percussion. Their sound ranges from musing to celebratory and airy to earthy, but is characterized always by the easy elegance of musicians who have mastered their instruments. The musicians have this to say about themselves: "We are committed to making music fiercely. We find music that speaks deeply to us, and we honor the traditions and dialects of each musical language... We find the place where our personal history intersects the melody, bass, harmony or chords. Revealed in these musical conversations are the essential parts of our own humanity." This recording showcases feminine creativity in all its rousing and subtle beauty! Ensemble Galilei has two other recordings that I know of so far: "Come, Gentle Night: Music of Shakespeare's World" on the TELARC label, and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music" from Dorian.

    It's very exciting to follow a group of musicians on their journey together, especially when that journey is made with heart, with fire, and with honor to tradition. Original tunes make easy friends with the traditional on this must-have CD. Love the Scollay's medley, for example, with The Dance Goes On as the last tune. It all works really well! The high quality of the sound itself, the strength of the original compositions, the sparkling arrangements and attention paid to choice of material all make this in my opinion the best EG so far. As a whole, it's great, but there are individual jewels here-- the mysterious Anna's Garden, the tender Cantigas, Liz Knowle's masterful delivery on anything, for example. Sue Richard's Aisling is just the best Sue Richards composition I've gotten to know yet. This piece provides a sumptuous musical (and magical) adventure, full of ideas to play with. Her work gives an added dimension to the collection. If you don't think Ensemble Galilei's work is groundbreaking, ask for this CD in your favorite music department, and watch the guy run around trying to figure out how it's categorized for display! It's really fun. "Ensemble Galilei...That's baroque, right? No! Should be under Celtic...no... uh, folk? Classical? Ensembles? Well, international? Okay, here it is, 'New!' Try it out, it's on the wall." No wonder he has trouble finding it. Their work is unique. It wouldn't be the same if this group of women didn't span decades in age, and possess wide differences in musical background. The group lives up to its commitment of "making music fiercely." Get it just for the cover photos! They're gorgeous.

    The recordings of this talented group of women musicians just keep getting better and better. This CD is a rich blend of original and traditional Celtic material, from across the globe. The CD is like a multi-course banquet, with delicate harp solos by Sue Richards, spicy fiddling from Liz Knowles, savory and haunting Viola De Gamba licks from Carolyn Anderson Surrick. Whether I'm driving, cooking, or filing bills, I play "From the Isles to the Courts" and my work is easier, my journey more worthwhile. I've been a fan of Ensemble Galilei since I first heard them perform a few years ago, but they've outdone themselves this time. "From the Isles to the Courts" is truly a musical feast.

        Buy this NOW. This has to be one of the loveliest, most life affirming discs you'll ever hear. The five members of Ensemble Galilei are exceptional mistresses of their instruments, - fine musicians not just fine players. The music is varied, though with a preponderance of bounce and rhythm. The sound is simply wonderful, open, lively, analytical in the best sense, - with a fine acoustic at all times. Above all, this disc will make you feel good about life, the celts, the isles, the courts, and everything else. Superb.

        This CD is absolutely wonderful. It would be a great addition to anyones personal collection. When I think about a children's choir, this sound is definitly not what comes to mind. The Spivey Hall Children's Choir is by far the best choir I've ever heard, children or not. They can be heard live at Spivey Hall in May and December every year. The Spivey Hall website would give you exact dates.

        A lovely collection of traditional carols and dances from Western Europe--some haunting, some jaunty, and all richly orchestrated for voice, keyboard, dulcimer, viola, recorder, guitar, mandolin, double bass and world percussion. This album has the same depth, quality and wholesome honesty of McCauley's other work, and while it starts off on the gentle side, it picks up in intensity as it goes along. Although all the tracks are great, my favorites are towards the end, including the rowdy "Bring Us In Good Ale," the inventive, Mid-East-tinged "Star of the East," and Frank Jackson's folksy arrangement of the 14th century Italian dance "Trotto," which is full of fiery fiddle, thrumming guitar and hints of progressive folk. Throughout their recording career, McCauley and husband/co-producer Kurt Scherer have maintained a core group of truly talented musicians, whose camaraderie and sensitivity to each other's improvisations continues to shine through in each new endeavor. Phil Heaven (bowed strings) and Frank Jackson (recorders and whistles) have been with them since their 1998 debut album, "Sabbath Day's Journey," while guitarist Brian Cunningham and percussionist Jason Darling have been around for at least the past one or two. Joining the team on this album is Lynne Givler on double bass, adding a nice depth and grounding to the sound. Everybody seems to have a Christmas album these days, and "The Moon of Wintertime" is a great one, with a distinctive mood and flavor all it's own.         With all that's being put out these days,it's refreshing when you try something new an find a real gem. Here's a Christmas/ seaonal album that one can listen to throughout the year...

          The Mexican composer Ponce is best remembered for the guitar music he wrote for his friend Andrés Segovia. Here is some of his piano solo music, most of it in recording premieres. The small character pieces and dances are entertaining and charming. The larger pieces in classical forms are boring. Someone else may love the Introduction, Prelude and Fugue on a Theme of Bach, but I'll stick with the lively Mexican dances. David Witten's playing is colorful and entertaining, and the disc is a good introduction to Ponce's piano music. --Leslie Gerber

          This is a CD you can actually put on a relax too. The piano is absolutely incredible. Whether you're a Bon Jovi fan or not this is a CD for anybody who likes good music. I totally recommend it.

          Even though I'm very partial, being a huge Bon Jovi fan, this album shows Mr. Bryan versatility in music styles, from a slow balads to his piano version of Bon Jovi's "In These Arms" which he co-wrote, we the fans get to see and hear this musical genius on his own. I hope this won't be his only solo effort.

          Dave Bryan showed all his power on this cd. Wonderful musician, Dave make of this album a very special thing for his fans.           This is his first solo effort. And it is well worth listening too. It is mainly piano but very very good.If you purchase this. You will love it too!
