Rarely does one come across a cross-cultural CD that's not calculated or hokey, but the musicologists/mixmasters of Sorma pull it off with ease on Mirage of the East. The foursome traveled to India, Mongolia, and Bali to capture the chant, songs, and sounds of those countries' rural communities before returning to Japan to add layers of fat grooves, elements of world music, and keyboards and programming. The result is an exotic trip into the Far East, dripping with leisurely ambience and flourishing with lush jungles of Asian instrumentation. Yasufumi Yamashita from Jalan Jalan (Bali) contributes to the project and his handiwork can be heard on the feminine "Legend of the Spring," "Bagus Flyer," and the remix of "Mirage" from the earlier release, Illusion. Overall, lovers of Uman and world-groove music will find a refreshing listen in this sensual collection. --Karen K. Hugg

Album Description
The vibrant music of Shulamit Ran is heard in this collection of six of her recent compositions. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in music and composer-in-residence of the Chicago Symphony, Ran's music blends high-energy, dense compositional thought, with a penchant for long-spun melismatic melodies. Born in Israel, Shulamit Ran came to the United States as a fourteen year old. Soon after, Leonard Bernstein invited her to perform one of her own compositions with the New York Philharmonic. Ran's music combines eastern melodic and formal influences with a dramatically argued sense of structure.
