Guitar Nova

For Norwegian musician Erik Wollo, Guitar Nova is a return to his roots. Best known for electronic landscapes on albums such as Solstice and Images of Light, Wollo actually generates most of his music with a guitar synthesizer. For Guitar Nova, however, he returns to pure, mostly acoustic guitar in an intricate, delicately balanced set of compositions. But it's not just another solo guitar album. Wollo multitracks his instruments in elaborate designs that have the same evocative power of his more lushly orchestrated synthesizer works. Wollo's melodies ring with an open-air purity, whether fingerpicking a 6-string, strumming a 12-string, or bringing in a laconic slide as he does on "Rainbows." From the moody undertow of "Source" to the interwoven minimalism of "Hildring," Wollo creates a crystalline country music, like Ry Cooder at the edge of the galaxy. --John Diliberto

Having witnessed the rise of Tango Nuevo, the refurbishing of Argentina's best-known native music by bandoneon maestro Astor Piazzolla, listeners might muse a bit that "New Flamenco" is an odd renovation to the Spanish guitar music's storied traditions. Odd or not, the music is certainly popular. Guitar Greats: The Best of New Flamenco shares the floor with other compilations of contemporary artists working in the tradition, specifically Narada's Viva Flamenco! and its roster of guitarists playing along with keyboards, drums, and other textures. So the "New Flamenco" isn't a burnishing or rootsy exploration in the vein of Piazzolla. Instead, Ottmar Liebert, Strunz & Farah, Oscar Lopez, Luis Villegas, and eight more artists examine on Guitar Greats how Flamenco shakes the hand of pan-Ethnic music, New Age ambience, and--of course--virtuoso guitar playing. Some of the best moments here belong not to Liebert or Strunz & Farah, though. Dan Young & Lawson Rollins sound dizzying and rhythmically potent on "Scorpion," as does Luis Villegas on "Spider Hugs," with its irresistibly parading rhythmic intensity. Guitar Greats will likely sound old hat to many of the music's enthusiasts, but it'll easily win Flamenco converts. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Invigorating!.......2004-05-08

This CD is absolutely fantastic!!! I have been listening to this almost everyday since I bought this a few months back. Its really great, especially after a long day at work - a fabulous way to unwind..it totally transforms your mood. Its soothing and at the same time invigorating, very rarely can something be both.

Also goes well with a glass of wine, with a book, for a nice evening with your partner, almost anything!! Even my 10 month old daughter just loves it!

And, oh yes, the guitar work is stupendous, out of the world - if you are a guitar aficionado, you GOT TO HAVE THIS.

Worth its weight in gold.

*Guitar Greats, The Best of New Flamenco* at first sight might look like one of those `Various Artists' loss leader compilations you see on Info-mercials or UHF stations at two in the morning. Or you might mistake it for the traditional, Segovia version of flamenco.

But NOoooooooooo! This disc is really quite good! It is a fine collection of energetic, up-tempo, well-rendered and well-sequenced songs in the 'nuevo flamenco' style. Contributions from Govi, Young & Rollins, Strunz & Farah, Ottmar Liebert, Nova Menco, Oscar Lopez, and other artists make it first rate.

I'll guarantee it. Most of these tunes will cause you to dance in your car or your office chair, or just plain get up and dance.

My spouse brought it home after hearing it playing in Borders. We soon discovered this is great car-driving music, especially with the sunroof and windows open, hair flowing in the wind.

I recommend you purchase this CD and put it in your player. It will make your house dusting a little more exciting and go a lot faster. Or you can always put on your best peasant girl outfit, clench a rose between your teeth and let the music carry you away...

1 out of 5 stars A Lesson.......2003-02-02

Flamenco solo guitar has always been innovative ever since Ramon Montoya (the father of flamenco solo guitar) started to include classical guitar techniques in the beginning of the 1900's.

Then came Sabicas and Niño Ricardo who by todays standard are considered 'traditional' or 'classic'.

Then in the 70's came Serranito, Paco de Lucia and Manolo Sanlúcar that started to mix influences from other musical styles into flamenco and are the founders to what is modern flamenco solo guitar today.

Countless young guitarists have been influenced by these three guitarists; Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, Gerardo Núñez, Juan Manuel Cañizares.

Just listen to any of the above mentioned guitarists before being duped into buying this poor excuse of a record.

5 out of 5 stars Hot funk cool punk even if it's old junk . . ........2003-01-03

it's still Rock & Roll to me, music fan. Who cares what Liebert, Cook, Lopez, Armik et al. call their music? Flamenco guitar music is no longer to be viewed as a narrow, strict artform with no room for innovation and growth. The influence is there, whether or not these new artists learned from old school flamenco guitar masters from Spain or not. You think rock & roll purists cried foul when punk, heavy metal and then alternative transformed the classic rock & roll landscape of the 50's and 60's? As for country, it sounds nothing like it was 20 or 30 years ago and yet it's still called country. And I'm not even mentioning the growing new sub-genre called alt-country. Like the improvisational jazz purists who cried and moaned about smooth jazz destroying their high-and-mighty artform, flamenco purists need to find something better to do with their time.

3 out of 5 stars Give it up for Aldo: A Great Song From A Great Canadian, eh?.......2007-04-09

Fantasy was a big deal on rock radio in 1982 and really, how can you not like it? Young Aldo elbowed aside Triumph, Chilliwack and April Wine to build the ladder upon which Loverboy climbed out of Great White North obscurity to red leather and headband fame 'round the world.

Aldo Nova, I hoist my Maple Leaf-emblazoned glass of Caesar in salute to you!

5 out of 5 stars Great rock.......2006-04-05

Indeed I wasn't born back in 1982.. but Aldo is something unique that you don't hear everyday. On Itunes, some classify him as hair metal.... I could agree with that on slight terms. Still, he's a great singer. On the song "Hot Love" in the begining when he's singing, he reminds me of Lou Gramm a little with his singing, with that rapid style.

Overall, he's a great guitarist, and musician. Great time to release this in 1982. If he released it in the late 1980's there would be a little trouble, since it was more heavy metal. But over all, I enjoy this cd alot, and always will love it.

The Axe Man "Charles Passantino"

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Aldo.......2005-12-07

This has to be one of the most underrated albums of all time, especially internationally. The layered vocals, multitude of instrumentation and song presentation is as strong as you'll ever hear. Its a shame that the sample of "Fantasy" doesn't include the opening guitar riff. It would quite simply "blow you away". Aldo Nova is a true musician.

5 out of 5 stars A Sound Unto Itself.......2004-10-25

I know that this album was made in the early Eighties, but to me it has a faint echo of the complex arrangements and ethereal sounds of its precursors from "Yes" and "Pink Floyd", the "moonscape" and atmospheric sounds, and the echo chamber quality of the singer's voice. It has all that without getting tedious as some of the music by the aforementioned artists can do. This is a great album for getting a flavor of that music without having to committ wholeheartedly, because as earlier reviewers say,it also has the power-ballad/early hair metal flavor also to keep it grounded and listenable.Just a great album by a great musician.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE EIGHTIES.......2004-08-09

THIS IS A 1980'S CLASSIC. ALDO'S STYLE OF GUITAR PLAYING HAS ALWAYS IMPRESSED ME, AND SO HAS HIS ALMOST GIRLISH SINGING. ON MANY OF THE TRACKS, HE FLIRTS WITH HARD ROCK AND OTHER SUCH ELEMENTS. ROCK ON, ALDO, CAUSE THIS IS ONE ROCKIN' ALBUM, AND IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES!

5 out of 5 stars As awesome now as it was then.......2007-07-05

I originally had the LP when it first came out in the early 80s. I was feeling nostalgic for good music since most of the current music played on the radio is not that great. The album is just as fabulous as I remember. The guitar playing, the lyrics, and the general energetic vibe beats this generic American Idol crap any day.

5 out of 5 stars awesome cd.......2006-07-09

One of Aldo Nova's greatest album from the 80's, a must have for the 80's era or those that grew up in the 80's.

One of my favorites from the 80's...........................

5 out of 5 stars Aldo Is A Genius.......2006-01-03

This album is pure pop/rock magic. Aldo Nova plays every instrument, wrote every song, and even produced the original album. Many consider him a sort of one hit wonder because "Fantasy" is the only song people really know. The song still gets played on the radio too. Every song is great, lyrically. His lyrics are very deep. Also, he can play a mean guitar. If you like bands like Triumph, you must buy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Pop Metal Blueprint Remastered.......2004-07-28

Aldo Nova's 1982 self-titled debut is a blueprint for the pop metal, or sometimes deridely called hair metal, music that would become tremendously popular throughout the 80's. The album is built around double tracked guitar riffs, sledgehammer drums and crisp melodies. The songs are either rocking anthems or power ballads. Mr. Nova spent three years as George Harrison in a Canadian version of Beatlemania, so he brought a strong sense of melody to the power chords. The album's open track and first single is the superb "Fantasy". The song opens to the sounds of helicopters and then kicks in with a searing guitar riff. The lyrics are pure 80's hedonism with talk of street girls and white powder. Mr. Nova was also one of the first artists to embrace MTV and his video for the song is a classic and peaked at number 23 on the charts. "Ball & Chain" and "You're My Love" are strong power ballads. "Foolin' Yourself" has a strong pop sound and was a small hit peaking at 65. "Heart To Heart" & "See The Light" heavily incorporate synthesizers into the mix. The album had a strong influence on Bon Jovi (whose cousin engineered the album) and he practically copies the album's format on his first few releases (Mr. Nova plays guitar on Bon Jovi's first hit "Runaway"). The album peaked at number 8 in early 1982, but Mr. Nova would never again crack the top 50 on the charts. He would later go on to big success as a songwriter and producer mostly notable for fellow French-Canadian Celine Dion for which he would win a Grammy for his production. This is a superb remastering of the album. The sound is a marked improvement over the original CD release which contained alot of hiss. Their is one bonus track, a demo version of the album's second single, "Foolin' Yourself", but the overall sound improvement is reason enough to buy th ealbum.

5 out of 5 stars Aldo Nova's First And Best.......2004-05-14

ALDO NOVA is Aldo Nova's first- and best- album. The big hit was "Fantasy", but other songs on the CD cut pretty deep lyrically, too. The expanded version features improved mastering and an alternate version of "Foolin' Yourself." On many tracks everything except drums is played by Nova himself or with one other person. This album was a prototype for much of the "hair metal" that came later, but is much more complex musically. This was the bridge between the Montrose/Foghat/Ted Nugent 70s hard rock sound and the Bon Jovi/Def Leppard pop-metal style. Get this album as soon as you can.

5 out of 5 stars amazingly whispy melodies!.......2005-11-27

this album is one of my fav guitar cd's of all time because the songs are simple yet boldly emotional at once.such precise playing I haven't seen the likes of since a sharon isbin album or buckethead's "electric tears"!if you like this the jonas hellborg cd "octave of the holy innocents"would be a worthy companion!

4 out of 5 stars Easy to listen to, laid back guitar sounds.......2001-03-27

This cd has bits that sound a little like some of the Narada label guitar offerings, some other bits like Acoustic Alchemy and also, a little bit country.

I guess laid-back New Age country guitar might be closest. Whatever it is, Wollo's cd is really charming, easy to listen to and despite the comparisons above, unique. If you like relaxed guitar sounds, you will like this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the title mislead you, this is wonderful music.........2000-11-11

When I first got a copy of this cd, "Guitar Nova", I thought, "yawn, another flamenco-flavored guitar CD where the guy will play too many notes way too fast." This is NOT at all what this album is about. The music is sublte, diverse, sparse and full in places, and very interesting to listen to. I would classify Erik Mollo up there somewhere with Michael Hedges, Alex di Grassi, Scott Huckabay, Tony Levin and Dallas Gordon. But the Mr. Mollo's style is not a copy of anyone else's. This may be due, in part, to the Norwegian roots. Mollo uses a variety of stringed instruments including acoustic 6 and 12 string guitars, fretless guitar, slide, balalaika, kora, and acoustic bass guitar. The tracks are not spare, single instrument outings, but include a rich feel on each. The samples you get here are short, so you can't get the full flavor of some of the tunes. Try these for a feel of the album's diversity: the first track (Blue Mountain) is rather traditional guitar, and very quiet; track three (Road) picks up the speed early on, so you can get a feel for the intricacy of the stylings; track 6 (Source) has a more electric feel: track 10 (Hjallepallo) starts with some nice harmonics. All in all, a very musically satisfying and fulfilling CD. Thanks again Spotted Peccary Music!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars very vanilla.......2006-09-05

I am not impressed with this. She was hyped in the guitar magazines and I was expecting more. With the exception of the first song, this is pretty mundane and boring. An all guitar cd that is stripped down needs drama and passion. I do not get it.

5 out of 5 stars This is the most consistent album from Badi to-date.......2003-05-22

The simple solo/duet arrangements give an open, honest, and intimate feel to all of the songs within the album. This has to be the best album from Badi to-date. The lack of ANY studio-type effects allows the beauty of the performance, instruments, and the material to remind the listener that true art can thrive in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2003-04-21

Maybe the best work of Badi Assad, Rhythms is music for those who like well-made experiences. Along with her melodious voice (in songs such "a primeira vista"), you can hear the simple and beautiful chorinho and great percussion. An excellent choice when you know Brazilian music is not only bossa nova. Uakti fans should love it.

4 out of 5 stars Badi's a HOTTIE!!!.......2002-01-21

This girl can really play!! She's got loads of technique, and lots of soul. She effectively blurs the lines between contemporary classical composition and brazilian pop. Although she is primarily a guitarist, the vocal work on this album is also very nice. Get the disk!!

5 out of 5 stars A must buy!.......2000-02-19

Badi Assad demonstrates why she was voted best Brazilian guitarist

Album Description

Heralded internationally as an outstanding artist, trumpeter Jens Lindemann has enlisted the talents of The Canadian Staff Band's 30-piece ensemble for his second Marquis recording, Rising Sun.

Lindemann's musicality and virtuosity coupled with the warmth and skill of The Canadian Staff Band clearly demonstrate the brilliance of this collaboration. The music offers an eclectic mix of standard repertoire and original compositions, some of Lindemann's finest work to date.

This musical journey takes the listener from Japanese flavoured pentatonic harmonies found on the title track, to fiery temperaments peppered throughout Slavische Fantasie, and goes on to soothe with the familiar sounds of classic Gershwin delivered in a unique Lindemann style.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Fine Trumpet Playing in a Very Eclectic Program.......2006-09-12

This disc is somewhat in the vein of Philip Smith's CD titled
My Song of Songs. Smith's disc is predominantly arrangements
of Christian hymns and songs, while Lindemann's is secular
except for two tracks. Both are recorded with excellent
Salvation Army brass bands.

Lindemann's sound, range, technical facility and breadth of
musical expression are phenomenal. Trumpet players will be
astonished at the level of control he has over his tone.
Lindemann excels at selling each piece, whether it be a
light piece or a substantial work such as Allen Vizzutti's
new composition. Musical maturity is evident here. He is
stylistically right-on.

Lindemann has a very strong high range and uses it
frequently -- perhaps a bit too frequently, but if I had
the ability to generate excitement like that, I might do
the same. It remains in good taste. Lindemann conveys a
lot of joy in this recording. The use of fluegelhorn and
piccolo trumpet add a variety of colors to his sound and
keep the disc interesting.

A special note must be made of the gorgeous piccolo trumpet
playing in the Vizzutti piece. It is an effortless, full,
and fluid sound. This piece alone is worth the price of the
disc.

The instrumentation of this project -- trumpet with brass
band -- will limit the appeal of the recording for many. This
is unfortunate, for the playing is on an extremely high level
throughout and the music making transcends the instruments
themselves.

Very highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars extraordinary - classic beauty with a twist.......1999-04-18

Badi Assad has converted me to her style of Brazilian music. Anyone who loves classical accoustic guitar music will love this cd. "Farewell" is the most haunting, perfectly played cut I have heard in years - It is worth the price of the CD for this cut alone.

5 out of 5 stars Like the pleasure of a perfectly-prepared, exotic meal.......1998-06-24

I know of very little music that I can listen to in a variety of contexts and still get pleasure out of it like the music of Badi Assad. Sit alone or with someone, turn the lights off, relax and be taken away by complexities of tone and rhythm that are nevertheless so easy to swallow. Or turn it on while you're thinking hard about some program or essay you're writing, letting it wash around you as you concentrate. And by all means, have it playing when you serve that exotic meal to your loved one, candles lit, the aroma of gently fried garlic in the air. Delicious!
