Sessions 2000

Since his hit debut, Oxygene, nearly three decades ago, Jean Michel Jarre's music has been fairly predictable. With the notable exception of Zoolook, in 1984, he's continued to create variations on his electronic space music sound. Don't look for that on Sessions 2000, though. Instead, Jarre plugs into the vernacular of ambient electronica, using drum loops and grooves to create a postmodern, electro-jazz noir sound. Jarre's earliest musical memories from his childhood were of sitting on the knees of jazz musicians like avant-garde trumpeter Don Cherry. That influence emerges here in languid electro-improvisations. Jarre plays samples of Hammond B-3 organs, jazz vibes, mutating trumpets, and upright basses in cyber nightclub in a Blade Runner city. But the synthesist's improvisations seem spiritless, an aimless, wandering jam session of one, amid squiggly electronic bloops and bleeps with non sequitur robot voices popping out now and then. Sessions 2000 is a daring move for the venerated synthesist, but there is a difference between chilling out and nodding out. --John Diliberto

Product Description
To anyone with more than a passing interest in the history of popular music, Jean Michel Jarre is one of the pioneering musical greats. With his 1976 album, the groundbreaking "Oxygene", he took popular music into an entirely new realm, one that hadn't existed before his arrival. Using the studio as an instrument - an 8-track tape machine, a Mellotron, a home organ, crude home-made sequencers and a range of analogue synthesizers - Jarre created the first truly commercial, mass-market album of electronic music. Jarre took his synthesized sound to the charts, the nightclub dance floors, the car stereos and the FM radios of the world.

Now, almost 30 years, 55 million albums, and several world-record-setting concert performances later, Jean Michel Jarre returns with Sessions 2000. The long-awaited new disc offers up otherworldly electro-theatrics with some decidedly human elements to his legions of fans around the world. Sessions 2000 is pure Jean Michel Jarre - hypnotic, sophisticated, cerebral, mysterious, and percolating with changing musical moods.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-06-24

Excellent sound quality, capturing the music and the rapport with the audience. Great playing and singing from the most unique blues musician on record, along with banter and stories between songs. If you have no Robert Pete Williams yet, this would be a fantastic beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Live Blues Recording.......2004-04-06

There's nothing to say. Just get and listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Live Blues Concert Recording of the 20th Century.......2004-04-06

What is there to say that hasn't been said by others? This album should be recognized with a Grammy for "Best Blues Concert Recording of the 20th Century". Anyone who has ever been moved, touched and inspired by the Blues should have this album. Norman Dayron, the producer who recorded this album, is either the luckiest man alive, in just being there with his tape recorder when the event happened, or he is the Number #1 Blues Producer in the world (and a musical genius).

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Blues Recording Ever.......2004-04-03

This is the best Robert Pete Williams album of all. A "must have" for all blues fans, and for that matter for anyone who knows the real thing when they hear it.

5 out of 5 stars "One of the Top Ten Blues Recordings of All Time".......2004-04-03

This is a stunning and amazing recording. It's the best Robert Pete Williams recording I have ever heard (and I have heard all of them). It was recorded by Grammy Winning Producer Norman Dayron when he was a student at the University of Chicago in 1965. The sound is clear as a bell and completely transparent. It's just like being there at the actual concerts in Chicago.

The recording starts off with Robert Pete telling an original story about going out in Chicago's bitter winter cold the night before the concert. It was 20 degrees below zero and he was hungry, looking for something to eat and wearing just a thin shirt. He had just been released from Angola State Prison in Lousiana where he was serving a sentence for first degree murder (he killed a white man in self-defense in a bar fight) and had never been in Chicago before, so he had no warm clothes. Yet he finds humor in what happened to him there and in his own mistake. The song he composed about that incident "It's So Cold in Chicago" is remarkable for his complex guitar fingerpicking, where he plays the rhythm part, the melody, and the harmony part simultaneously as a powerful second voice in a duet with a dark, strong deep blues vocal sound that can only be compared to Robert Johnson, Son House, or Charly Patton.

Finding this recording was, for me, like finding a diamond in my pocket. It's like no other recording of Robert Pete Williams ever made. I recommend it to people who can really hear music (not just deep blues fanatics) and who know the real deal when they hear it. Thank you to Norman Dayron, the blues record producer, who had the good luck to be there at the time and the amazing instinct to just turn on his tape recorder. I would rate this recording as one of the top ten Blues recordings of all time.

1 out of 5 stars Different style, and boring.......2006-07-06

If you like Jean Michel Jarre for his old style music, like, equinoxe, oxygen, chronologie etc... don't waste your money. This album is not for you....

3 out of 5 stars Will require more listening........2005-08-27

I'm a fan of JMJ since the early 80s. I bought Geometry Of Love and Sessions 2000 was a bonus on the CD. Geometry Of Love, I like very much.

Sessions 2000 is not one that I like but that is my opinion. The only advice I would give to other Jarre fans, is to buy it and judge it for yourself.

JMJ is not losing his touch as some people think so. He explores new ground and that is good for a great artist.

I look forward to his many other new releases in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2005-07-13

I've been a Jarre fan since 1987. Got all his albums, blah blah blah.

I like this one. It's completely different from everything else Jarre's ever done, and that, I think, is a good thing. Gotta branch out, you know?

"Oxygene" is still my favourite, but I really do enjoy this album. I'm listening to it right now, in fact.

1 out of 5 stars Bloody awful.......2005-05-18

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know we should be congratulating artists for taking risks in this age of industry-generating pop hyper-stardom, but you at least have to know your strengths and your weaknesses.

This is just so bad; clumsy, unengaging, and and an outright bore.

I don't even know if this attempt at jazz qualifies as jazz. I wish I'd never bought it.

4 out of 5 stars Different, yes, but good.......2005-01-18

It amazes me when people critisize an artist like JMJ for doing something different. I mean, if you don't like it, fine. JMJ has a long career. And like ANY artist with a long career, he will try new things (hopefully) some will work, some won't, some you will like, some you won't. If you want him to just keep releasing albums that sound like Oxygene or Chronologie, then just listen to those albums again.

I like this album. It is more ambiental than a lot of his more symphonic releases like the ones mentioned above. It has some jazz elements, but I wouldn't call it jazz. There is room in this world for both. I hope he keeps on experimenting an re-inventing himself.

1 out of 5 stars Is this Jean-Michel Jarre??.......2007-03-27

I bought this CD about 4 years ago and sold it the same day I got it. This is nothing at all like Jarre's work. The songs went nowhere. They lacked style and direction. It was like "ambient-jazz", if there is such a thing. The CD came with no information about this as well. It was just the case and the CD. It was almost as if this was a push to meet some kind of a deadline or record company requirement.
All in all, if your looking for Jarre on this one, he is not musically present. Some musicians take different paths with their art , and while some pull it off...Jarre's path leads to a cliff. This is just really bad music.BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2003-01-22

I am a huge fan of Jean Michel Jarre. Without doubt, he is my biggest influence in making my music, his albums Equinoxe and Oxygene are perhaps both my favourite and most influential albums. I listened to 30-second samples of each song from his official website, and it does not sound good. It's Electro - jazz music, and it also sounds a bit too experimental. When he used singing for the album Metamorphoses, I found the album to be quite good, but definitely not as good as the older albums, but this one is really bad. Buy the other ones instead.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Surprise.......2003-01-21

Jean Michel Jarre continues to surprise his fans. In this album he explores different styles and the jazz influence can be clearly felt. There are no "Oxygene/Equinoxe"-like tunes in it, but the atmosphere created is realy cool. What I like about the album is that one can realy feel the fact that Jean Michel Jarre and his "partner in crime", Mr Francis Rimbert, had a lot of fun playing and recording "Sesions 2000". Anyway, for me at least, it is much better than "Metamorphoses".

Jean Michel Jarre recorded this album assisted by his 'partner in crime' Francis Rimbert. Francis Rimbert tells - 'As the title of the new album reflects, we have done several sessions of composing and recording. We have explored new musical styles. Electronical styles of course, but also with some other influences. Sometimes, there is a jazzy style that will surprise people. I like it very much, and we had a really good time recording it.'
