One of the many oddities of Bob Dylan's long and unruly career has been the rather cursory recording treatment given his stint as ringleader of the Rolling Thunder Revue. It's a shortcoming that's rectified with the release of Live 1975. Prior to the appearance of this two-disc collection, Rolling Thunder's eclectic road show was chronicled only in the infrequently screened, Dylan-directed Renaldo & Clara film and the bafflingly brief and one-note 1976 live set, Hard Rain. In contrast to its predecessor, this set, culled from four appearances made in November and December of '75, captures the breadth and subtleties of Dylan's Rolling Thunder performances. "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You," formerly a coda from Nashville Skyline, is given a rather incongruous bite here, while "It Ain't Me, Babe" is colored brightly by multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield along with erstwhile David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, the sparkplug of the gratifyingly ragtag group that coalesced on short notice. Solo acoustic performances weave through caterwauling full-band treatments of songs old ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll) and new ("Hurricane" and four other selections from Desire, which wouldn't hit the racks until early '76). While the contributions of a number of caravan cohorts and guests are left out, Joan Baez shares the spotlight with Dylan on four numbers, most notably on the rarity "Mama, You Been on My Mind" and the traditional "The Water Is Wide." But despite its cavalcade trappings, it was Dylan's show, and this collection demonstrates finally just how close to his '60s peak the '70s Dylan was. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Dylan is king!.......2007-03-09

These discs have been in my cd player since I purchased them a month ago. Dylan's painted face allows him to be more diverse. It has songs that feature just Dylan and his guitar and others with his stellar band. For any Dylan fan interested in the bootleg series, this is a great starting point. I have several others in teh bootleg series, but few are as fun as this one. He just rocks!

3 out of 5 stars perhaps lower expectations are in order.......2007-02-15

Some of you are not going to like this review, but buyers will need some candor here. Dylan really is great, and his often great work in the 1970s is generally underappreciated. But this live set is not the place to learn to love Dylan. If you're curious about this title, my recommendation is go pick up his studio recordings of the mid- to late-1970s, beginning with the remastered titles. These are lovely, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes groovy, and often superb. If you already have these, then, if you choose to get this title, you might set your expectations a little lower.

The main problem with Live 1975, as a reviewer below notes, is the singing--or, as one might better say, the bellowing. Dylan has one of rock's great voices and in his studio recordings, including his studio recordings of the 1970s, he sings with astounding emotional authority (where does he get that, one wonders--how does anyone get that?!). In these Live 1975 tracks, however, Dylan is out of voice, bellowing either to be heard or else to "voluminate" in lieu of giving a more emotionally nuanced vocal performance. This is not an uncommon failing of concert recordings, but the present case is quite pronounced and I agree with the reviewer below that it seriously taints the enjoyment of these disks.

I may as well go on to note that the sound of the band is quite dense here. I think it's not a performance problem or an engineering problem, but one of arrangement: there are too many instruments crowding the middle range, so it sounds a bit like an undifferentiated wall of sound. Again, rather characteristic of the 1970s live sound, but rarely the case with Dylan's studio recordings.

In short, if you're curious about Dylan in the 1970s, there are better places to look. My favorite of the Live albums is the 1964 one.

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks!.......2007-01-18

Without a doubt one of Dylans best recordings. I was blown away hearing this for the first time, and the twentieth for that matter. This album was just recently released and is a must have for any Dylan fan. If you're looking for a gift for a Dylan fan this is it. Most fans have the popular titles, Blood on the Tracks, Route 66 Revisited, etc. but there's a good chance they don't have this title yet. Guaranteed not to disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic from the Bootleg Series with some essential takes.......2007-01-12

The Rolling Thunder Review live collection is a close second to Live 1966 as the most essential live Dylan album ever released. Throughout these recordings, a revitalized and energetic Dylan hollers out his new and old classics to a rambunctious crowd of random people (the show traveled like a circus and had little to no publicity) and reinvents many of his old songs along the way.

This series of shows, like many of Dylan's great post-'65 concerts, features a combination of hard-rocking band numbers and solo acoustic songs. He's got a great band, too, with several guitarists, a tight rhythm section, a violin, and even a pedal steel guitar. With this rocking ensemble he reworks several classics into hard rocking barnstormers. "It Ain't Me Babe" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" groove at quick paces and sound almost unrecognizable from their folky original versions. "It Takes a Lot to Laugh" and "Just Like A Woman" are transformed from their delicate studio incarnations to anthemic rockers. Likewise, Dylan's new material (soon to be recorded in the studio as Desire) rocks hardest of all. The versions of "Hurricane" and "Isis" recorded here put the studio versions to shame, performed with fire and energy here that makes these versions the essential recordings.

Some of the album's best moments are the acoustic tunes. The recent hits "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Simple Twist of Fate" sound great, and duets with Joan Baez like "The Water is Wide" channel Dylan's folk past while at the same time remaining firmly rooted in where he was at that moment.

The Rolling Thunder Revue presents Dylan in one of his most daring and original endeavors, and the excellent liner notes tell the story quite well. This collection contains a great selection of classics as well as some great songs that are under-represented in Dylan's live catalog ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol"). It's a wild ride and a rewarding listen that I heartily recommend.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS!!!!.......2006-12-06

I absolutely love this double album. Growing up I owned a bootleg of the rolling thunder revue. Unfortunatly it got lost, however this cd did make up for it. The re-working of "it ain't me babe" is great, and the Joan Baez duo of "mama you've been on my mind" is really good with the country/rocking feel. My one slight problem with this is that "NEVER LET ME GO" was left off...that is not cool

4 out of 5 stars Flashy, Fun, and Flamboyant.......2007-05-31

The Circus March is unfortunately a style of music that is often ignored, yet can be one of the most difficult things to play. Musicians almost have to have a feel for it to achieve the desired effect. Each march contained herein captures both excitement, showmanship, and even a certain degree of comedy that is associated with this style. Listening to these brings back a by-gone era of bearded ladies, roller coasters, and kettle corn. If you play this regularly, you may even begin to smell the peanuts roasting....

5 out of 5 stars stunning musical review.......2005-09-27

This is music I have not heard, or played, for years. Most impressive musicianship. And the tempos are unbelievable! For this size group, it is amazing--and nothing less would be expected.

I am a retired music teacher, and this brought me back to the times when I played in large marching bands, or smaller groups for the local rodeo, as a college student. Great excitement in listening, and being swept away to a time when I had less to worry about.

The music itself has a great affect on me, besides the impressive way in which it is delivered. Great sound. Great precision. Great music that just isn't played or used much anymore. How fun to relive those moments--especially the ones featuring the trombone.

5 out of 5 stars Nice and lively!.......2004-04-28

I was specifically looking for music of the circus and this recording just blew me away. It is clean and well done -- technically speaking. The Eastman Wind Ensemble is spectacular! If you are looking for something that sounds like a circus band, this is NOT it. This is a very professional, high quality recording of some of the best march music ever composed.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds even better than when I first heard it.......2004-03-01

When I first heard the last eleven marches on this recording; I heard them on tape, and I really enjoyed them, this was back in 1988 when I was in the seventh grade. When I moved in the winter of 1988, I lost that tape. I was very sad when I did, and it was not until the summer of 2002 that I saw this recording at amazon; 14 years later still great, and sounds even better on CD than it did on tape. This time was even better, because it has even more marches, in the old tape, it had what on this recording are tracks 17-28. Tracks 1-16 are equally good, this recording is of a great sentimental value for me...I hope you enjoy as much as I have 14 years later....

5 out of 5 stars A staple.......2003-06-14

A great collection of marches not by Sousa conducting by none other than Fennell. You can't go wrong having this in your band CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars I'm gonna have to disagree with Delite Rancher.......2007-05-07

This album is actually made in the same vein as Paul Kantner's "Blow Against The Empire", "Sunfighter", and David Crosby's "If Only I Could Remember My Name". Mickey Hart had gathered most of the same musicians that comprised those albums to create a sonic masterpiece. Although Hart stayed mainly with San Fran musicians, mainly other members of The Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe & The Fish, and Jefferson Airplane.

The feel of the record is evenly split between cleverly funky psychedelic rock songs and explorations in world music and musical dissonance. The two different styles fuse perfectly on "Pump Song" which utilizes a tape loop of Mickey Hart's Water Pump (which plays in the key of C to match the music) as the only rhythmic support, while another Dead classic "Greatest Story Ever Told" plays over that, ending with more explorations of dissonance, courtesy of Jerry Garcia's "insect fear" (what he is credited for on the sleeve).

The album also shows off the great vocal range of Quicksilver's David Frieberg. As well as contributing various bass, piano, guitar, and percussion parts throughout the album, he sings in a low-baritone growl (fed through various effects) on the slightly spooky rocker "Fletcher Carnaby" and sings into the upper stratosphere on the funky tracks "Young Man" and "Hangin' On".

Basically, there is little else I can say about this album, but it is definitely essential for anybody who loves the Dead, the Airplane, Quicksilver, or Country Joe & The Fish.

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked and underrated.......2006-04-23

Not just for Mickey Hart completists, or Grateful Dead historians, this album stands on its own and a rich exploration of rhythms and textures. If you like music you can chew on, try this one on.

4 out of 5 stars Seminal piece from the Marin County Musical Mafia.......2005-06-04

I can't agree with the other reviewer's lukewarm rating, but like most things in life, he is not hallucinating when he describes the difference in sounds. No, this is not a continuously-themed concept album, but it is a collection of some great tunes, some even historic, performed and embellished by some of the greatest musicians to come from the Bay Area music scene. The album's cover art is one of the best Kelly/Mouse designs ever, and screams at you that something special is going on here. The Shoshone Invocation, delivered by Rolling Thunder himself, kicks things off, then transitions from marimbas in 10/4 time to the sound of rain, then leads into a special version of the Grateful Dead song "Playing in the Band," titled as "The Main Ten." John Cipollina's guitar licks are in classic fluid form here, and this version informs your understanding of all the other versions. Rather than do a blow-by-blow, check out who plays what here: http://www.gdforum.com/store/music/gdcdthun.html

Other highlights:
"Blind John," a Jefferson Airplane song you may have never seen on an album (I saw it live during the Thirty Seconds over Winterland show)
"Deep Wide and Frequent," which is a jam, featuring stellar guitarists Jerry Garcia, John Cipollina, and Terry Haggerty
"Pump Song" features the water pump of Mickey Hart's ranch, and is the same song as "Greatest Story Ever Told."
"Hangin' On" is a great album closer, and features great vocals by David Freiberg, who sings on other songs as well, and Cipollina and Barry Melton, two of the greatest SG guitarists of the era, dueling it out.

A true must-have for any true Deadhead.

3 out of 5 stars classic rock meets world music.......2005-06-03

How would you like to hear an album that brings together the greatness of Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Zakir Hussein, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner and the Tower of Power? If you're not drooling at this point, you should since these are time tested musicians that have made great recordings. While the ingredients may be high quality, the end product is not. This album is schizophrenic; it doesn't know if it's a classic rock LP or a world music disc. This schizophrenic division is most likley a reflection of how Mickey Hart felt about music in 1972 when he was both the drummer for the Grateful Dead and a burgeoning Ethnomusicologist. While half of the songs sound like Classical Indian or Indonesian Gamelon, the other half sound like something off a Classic Rock FM station. To add to the disjointed theme, the Tower of Power's gaudy brass adds an R&B element that spoils most of the rock tunes. While the album could have been eclectic for its own sake, the rock songs just aren't very good. While all the music on "Rolling Thunder" is interesting and creative, the songs have little staying power or resonance. That written, we do get to hear the pump sound that is the mythical inspiration for 'the Greatest Story Ever Told,' here appropriately renamed as 'Pump Song.' This album should be considered a stepping stone that led to Mickey Hart's better work as both a band leader and producer. If you want to jam out, listen to Dick's Picks; if you want amazing rhythm, pop in "Planet Drum;" get this only if you're a Mickey Hart completist.

Album Description

Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigate—the relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyo—along with 67 other Japanese cities—in 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."

As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's character—and the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".

Album Description

The acclaimed composer's score to the 2003 documentary by Errol Morris, their third collaboration. The film is subtitled ''11 Songs From The Life of Robert S. McNamara. Orange Mountain Music.

5 out of 5 stars (G)lassy.......2007-07-28

Some people hear things others never do. Of these, a few write them down. Of these, a small number create a theme and variations upon it that cohere and enthrall.

Philip Glass belongs to this minute group of human beings. Fortunately for us, recorded music exists to make his work available to all and at any time. His soundtrack for the Errol Morros documentary on Robert McNamara is a lesson in how to create film music that unobtrusively ups the ante of the film it graces.

Glass' score both intensifies and accelerates the movie. It is nearly impossible for one not to experience a quickened pulse when Glass pulls together--of all things, a snare drum, a bit of low brass, and a flute.

Ah, that flute. It floats in and out of track after track, bereft of its customary vibrato, a penetrating, entrancing reminder that something serious is going on in the film. It is a masterful use of a small, metal pipe. At the command of Glass, the humble flute and its younger brother the piccolo punch considerably above their weight.

Who could write such a work? Probably only Philip Glass.

The movie's pretty good, too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-08-09

Intriguing historical account of MacNamara- what he was thinking, what he did not say during two administrations involved in the Viet Name war. Use of film footage and Philip Glass' eerie and ominous soundtrack further developed the power of this film.

5 out of 5 stars The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05

Ever thought about what it would be like to watch a film with no muscial score? I have and I did for this documentary. Believe me when I write this, there's no way this film would have been as good without Glass' melodic brutality looming in the background.

Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."

The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.

In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24

Errol Morris is the best documentary film maker ever and The Fog of War is his crowning achievement. The film explores the complexity of war and how it evolves. There is no political bias or agenda here...just plain truth and facts. Great work. Equal to the task is Phillip Glass's soundtrack. The music is haunting and eerie.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31

I'll keep this review short, just like the length of the pieces on the CD. This is yet another great score by Glass, and superbly recorded as well. Glass uses his classic strings and percussion to great effect and oftentimes great surprise as well.

This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?

The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.

Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!

CBrass has for some years now been one of the premiere brass units in the world. Having seen them twice in person, they are true showmen and ambassadors for their country, their music and instruments.

Here is a CD that is needed in our time: a collection of patriotic, good ole' American music.

This is 4th of July clap your hands firework watching music at its best. In fact, that is exactly what listening to this collection does for me: it takes me to the excellent Greenfield Village at Henry Ford's annual 4th Fireworks Concert.

This is good stuff, well done by early CBrass.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2002-01-29

The Canadian Brass never fail to please, and this CD really lives up to that reputation. Even with the added orchestra, the songs never get bogged down or unevenly weighted. This was one of the first CB CD's I bought several years ago, and still one of my favourites of theirs.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2000-10-24

This cd is a lot of fun to listen to, mainly because of the entirely too impressive trumpet playing. While the quintet may be a bit trumpet heavy, it does not detract from music in this corny, showy style. It is a lot of fun to listen to, and I highly recommend it to those who love brass music.

5 out of 5 stars ridiculously good.......2004-04-02

this cd rates up there with roger water's amused to death with all time epic experimental and brilliant albums. it's different and better than any other mickey hart album i've ever heard. in a word, raw.

4 out of 5 stars If only it was totally instrumental...........2002-08-12

This is a fair debut solo album by Mickey Hart. The album mixes percussive instrumentals, rainny ambiances, as well as well constructive songs, to form a pretty good album.

The flow isn't up to snuff (IMO), as I believe the "rock n roll" sounding songs don't go with the experimental percussion outings.

The one exception is "The Main Ten". Fabulous format for that composition. I love how the tablas come in and out of the rain.

The opening track Rolling Thunder- with it's Indian like screaming ... freaked me out (as well as my dog). Super beginning to a fairly good album...

Bottom line...the instrumentals (IMO) are better than the actual "songs" on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Mickey Hart's Solo Masterpiece: From Africa to Marin County.......2001-03-07

Mickey Hart's 1972 solo Album "Rolling Thunder" is one of the best spin off's from a Grateful Dead member ever to grace recorded audio. It features an enormous amount of guest musicians like, Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Grace Slick and Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane and The Tower of Power Horn Section. Bob, Phil, and Jerry even stopped by to help their freind out. Bob Weir delivered one of the most incredible performances of Playin In the Band I've ever heard. Also the cd's track 5, Blind John the Guitar Man has an amazing layering of guitars and vocals with the beautiful wail of Grace Slick at the base of it all, smoothed over by the beautiful sounds of Steve Shuster's flute. Though not all tracks are folk oriented almost half are much like Mickey Hart's Plant Drum with a much funkier beat. The Cd is a destined mix of Classic Folk and what I like to call Classic African. This album is truely a must have for any one who likes the sounds of Jethro Tull, The Grateful Dead, and all the way to Zakir Hussain.

Rolling Thunder is a nature CD set to music that only serves to enhance the romance and the power of a thunderstorm and rain. I have other CD's by Dan Gibson and they are absolutely wonderful. I was skeptical at first ordering a Thunderstorm CD with music, but I was immediately a fan. I use this CD to relax, read, and I am buying some for gifts. If you enjoy the beauty of a thunderstorm, with a mix of gentle rain, night sounds, and a musical score that only enhances the experience...this is a keeper. You will find yourself playing this one over and over.

      Album Description

Check out these unique, well written and marvelously performed marches by the Texas A&M University Bands under the baton of one of America's most informed march experts, Dr. Timothy Rhea. The entire set of CDs, currently four volumes, features favorite "West Texas" Marches. It is a treat to hear these uncommon marches. You can't help but wonder, "How come we don't hear more of these wonderful marches???"

5 out of 5 stars This Ain't No Dance Record.......2005-10-30

Rolling Thunder, the latest in the legal Bootleg series, makes up for what the boys in the suits at Columbia left off "Hard Rain." The stuff with Baez is superb, the acoustic stuff even better. The versions of "Tangled up in Blue" and "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" are as good if not better than the originals, as if that could even be possible. The ripping version of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," that should have been on the "Hard Rain" LP released two decades ago is a scorcher. "Isis" is a dirge you don't wanna miss and "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, it Takes a Train to Cry," will get your blood pumping. This ain't no dance record, but it gets five stars anyway.
