"I actually experience her as a female Krishna Das, she's that good."

Product Description
Kathy Zavada sings with an exquisitely pure and soulful voice in Sanskrit and English, in a call and response style. These are three extended chants that will transport you into realms of joy and bliss. Gorgeous instrumentation includes piano, flute, tablas, keyboards, percussion, bass and rich vocal arrangements. The album Journey Home was co-produced by Kit Walker (Deva Premal). Great for singing along, meditation, yoga, healing work, driving, and spiritual inspiration! "Zavada's performance is right up there with any devotional singer in the world. I actually experience her as a female Krishna Das, she's that good." Steve Ryals, Music Reviewer

If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12

I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.

3 out of 5 stars Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30

I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.

5 out of 5 stars No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01

I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18

Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2007-07-04

There isn't much I can say about this beautiful movie, except that it was so touching!
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.

Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

5 out of 5 stars Pays music a complement. I love the classical pieces!.......2007-05-27

I do not have the soundtrack to The Notebook, but I do have the movie itself. Having said that, every song is wonderful. Some music carries with it, a wealth of emotion and a sense of timelessness. I love all of the classical pieces , perhaps the best, in this particular movie. Classical has never been my speed when it comes down to music, but something about this movie's classical masterpieces struck a chord in me...made me smile and maybe even sniffle a bit. If you are a fan of the movie, I'm sure you would love its soundtrack too. Music like this is ideal for a romantic evening or just for pleasure listening. You don't know if you'll like something until you give it a chance! So give this a chance!!

5 out of 5 stars the Notebook soundtrack (Audio CD).......2007-05-13

This is a beautiful collection of music from the movie, The Notebook. Most is instrumental, very relaxing, as well as lively at times. Two renditions of "I'll Be Seeing You" are included.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2007-03-30

I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack, but I'm also a big fan of background music and this cd was great for both. Listening to the cd took me back to the movie and reminded me how much I enjoyed it, but I also put the cd on during a nice meal with friends and it worked out very well, they all enjoyed the music.

5 out of 5 stars A sweeping, emotional standout!.......2007-01-11

The music from The Notebook brings you right back to the film, capturing your heart and soul. It's music will roll live waves through your soul and bring you from nostalgia to your own feelings of love and desire. The selections, arrangements and orchestrations are to be admired, and Mr. Zigman is to be praised. This soundtrack truly completes the legacy of "The Notebook".

For 20 years the Cowboy Junkies have created bluesy hypnotic spells while eschewing the expected forms of the genre. Taking their cues from the pre-Chicago, pre-electric blues of the Mississippi Delta, they've drawn from the resonance of solitary, acoustic performers in spreading the sound over an ensemble while not cluttering the sound in the least. This set's title includes a word they've used before: "home" (Miles from Home, 1998). It embodies a sensibility that is reflected in the band's success at maintaining a stance consistent with how they've presented themselves over the course of their career. Michael Timmins's songs have always been perfectly suited to the voice of his sister Margo. At their most spare, as on "Misguided Angel," his guitar and her singing manage to imply vast expanses and layered intricacies. Recorded at the end of their 2004 tour, this CD and DVD release is a testament to a band who can play songs from the earliest years of their catalog and never be on automatic pilot. A rare and wonderful thing indeed: the Cowboy Junkies have found out how to not get lost in their own legacy. --David Greenberger

Album Description

Recorded and filmed at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in England at the end of their 2004 tour, Long Journey Home is one of the strongest performances the Cowboy Junkies have ever put on tape. The album and DVD feature stunning renditions of Junkies classics such as "Sweet Jane" and "Misguided Angel" along with recent favorites like "Notes Falling Slow" and "He Will Call You Baby," plus several inspired cover songs, including a sublime version of Neil Young's "Helpless." Long Journey Home is a testament to why the Cowboy Junkies have remained one of the most original and important bands of the past 20 years. DVD audio options include Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Live Junkies.......2007-01-12

Previously released as a DVD only, it is nice to have a CD to go along with the DVD. It is well worth the price of admission in particularly for a somewhat more aggressive "Sweet Jane" highlighting Mike Timmins stellar guitar work, as well as an extended "32-20 Blues". Other standouts are "Pale Sun" and "He Will Call You Baby". The concert footage is excellent due to great performances of both old and newer selections. The DVD has 7 additional songs. My only gripe is that this combo CD and DVD should have been the only release. Having two releases is kind of a rip off of the longtime fans of this great Canadian group. Hence only 4 stars rather than 5.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Concert Footage.......2007-01-10

I have been a Junkies fan since the mid 80's. I love all of their stuff. I have every album and each one is as good as the other, however, this one blew me away. Both the DVD and the CD are great. I enjoyed especially the version of "Sweet Jane" and "Good Friday". They also have a great live cover of "Helpless". I highly recommend this to any Cowboy Junkies fan.

3 out of 5 stars Does anyone out there know how to film a concert?.......2006-12-24

The cd is great and the dvd could have been great had it been filmed correctly. Who's bright idea was it to light Margo's face from above using a cold blue light that made her look like a wrinkled corps? And why can't anyone film a concert where a camera shot lasts more than five seconds. The editing keeps jumping from one shot to another every 3 seconds. Cowboy Junkie songs are rich and sumptuous. The constant change in camera shot detracts from the experience. A great band like this deserves better. Their fans deserve better. Hope we get a better dvd next time. That's a lot of betters.

4 out of 5 stars An outstanding CD/DVD combo showcases the Junkies live.......2006-12-10

CD: 4 stars; DVD: 4.5 stars

The Cowboy Junkies celebrate their 20 years existence as a band with the release of another live album, less than 2 years following the live "Open Road" album. This particular album was taped at a show in Liverpool, England, in October, 2004 during the "One Soul Now" tour.

The DVD (18 tracks, plus 3 interviews; 180 min.) brings the 2 hour show in its entirety and is as top notch as I can ever remember the Cowboy Junkies. Starting of with a 10 min. cover of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane", a song that the CJ have made their own over the years, the 2 hours flow by like a dream. Michael Timmins' guitar work shines throughout, and Margo Timmins' singing has gotten stronger and more confident in the last 10 years. Other great tracks include the 14 min. epic "32-20 Blues" (the Robert Johnson tune), with mesmerizing solos throughout, "The Slide", a beautiful cover of Neil Young's "Helpless", and the closer "Misguided Angel", with just Michael and Margo by themselves. Of the extras, only the half hour interview with Michael and Margo is really worth watching. Let's give a big thumbs up, though, to the band for maximizing the content capacity of this DVD (3 hours long!).

The CD (11 tracks, 70 min.) is a more curious affair. For whatever reason, not only was a selection made from the songs brought that night, but strangely the running order was completely mixed up. So the CD starts midway in the concert, with the afore-mentioned "32-20", and the evening's opener ("Sweet Jane") is now the closer! Once you've seen the DVD, you expect the CD to run like the actual show, but it doesn't. That said, the Cowboy Junkies really are at their peak on this set.

In all, this CD/DVD combo is a wonderful gift for Cowboy Junkies fans all over, and available at a very fan-friendly price here on Amazon. Highly recommended! If you like Cowboy Junkies, check out Over the Rhine, which is similiar in style (OtR just issued a new all-original Christmas album called "Snow Angels").

4 out of 5 stars For Junkies Of The Junkies.......2006-10-30

Similar to and different from the Cowboy Junkies 2004 release of "Open Road" which documented the band's song book auditorialty and visually during their 2000-2001 tours, "Long Journey Home" continues the CD/DVD combo treatment that will please dedicated fans more than the casual listener.

The Junkies 2004 tour wrapped up in the musically historic city of Liverpool, a specific nod to why the band chose to record on this date. The DVD concert program is professionally shot with multi cameras that provide intimate views of each member on thier instruments. The band performs a solid setlist which spans most of their albums (some of which get smart re-working) and a few then-current covers. However, the winning factor is that the Junkies were in top notch attention with eachother and planned to visually capture this concert on thier terms (as opposed to the made-for-television performances on "Open Road") that results in a genuinely focused Cowboy Junkies concert. Fortunately, the extras are not all waste. If one can get anything from the in-depth interviews - it reinforces that each band member is still excited and energized about continuing to make music in the future - "even when their 65 and playing the Holiday Inn circuit" as the band's production manager states.

The CD program contains tracks culled from that same performance in Liverpool, only the concert is edited and the setlist is re-arranged. To me, an opportunity was missed to capture the true nature of the Junkies entire 2004 tour onto CD (much like the live "Waltz Across America" release). Because the Junkies record each of their concert dates, "Long Journey Home" should have been a collection of songs from that tour's cities as opposed to a briefed re-hash of what is already hear on the DVD. For that reason alone, the 5 star rating has been dropped to a 4.

While the entire performance is strong, my personal highlights are mainly their new material from "One Soul Now" and thier interpretive choice of cover songs:

Robert Johnson's "32-20 Blues" (a 14+ minute hypnotic jam interwoven with multiple free-form solos while anchored by a liquidy simple-groove bassline).

George Harrisons "Isn't It A Pity" (which appeared live b/f the band's 2005 "21st Century Blues" album).

Neil Young's "Helpless" (captured live after being placed on the Junkies "Neath Your Covers" ep which sistered their "One Soul Now" album).

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

The first is called "Common Ground: Voices Of Modern Irish Music", which I consider the best of the contemporary Irish artists doing traditional songs.. it has songs by U2, Crowded House, Elvis Costello, Sinead O' Connor, Kate Bush, Christy Moore, and many others (ASIN: B000002U4V). Then after you get that one, check out the soundtrack for the movie "Gangs of New York"... with songs by U2, Peter Gabriel, Afro Celt System, and many others (ASIN: B00007DT8M). Unfortunately, though, they left out the Sinead O' Connor song from that movie "Paddy's Lamentation", which can be found instead on her album of all traditional Irish songs "Sean-Nos Nua", which is absolutely spellbinding (ASIN: B00006L4HB). If you want some more great contemporary Irish artists doing traditional songs on compilations, do a song search and type in "Clannad" (that is Enya's sister's band, one she used to be a part of), she is on a grip of Irish/Celtic compilations. Happy Hunting! :) 7.5/10

5 out of 5 stars A must for all Irish-Americans and Americans in general.......2001-08-03

This soundtrack to the acclaimed television mini-series is heartbreakingly beautiful in its selection of music to represent the Irish diaspora. Surprising are the renditions of traditional songs by artists as diverse as Vince Gill, Sinead O'Connor and Van Morrison, and the orchestral pieces bring tears to my eyes, they are so beautiful. As the descendent of several waves of Irish migration in the past two centuries, it makes me wonder what prompted some of my own Irish ancestors to leave their homeland and come here. This music will break your heart, make you tap your toes joyfully and will make you both smile and cry, true Irish stuff if ever I heard it. I feel both intense sadness and pride at my Irish roots when listening to these songs and instrumental pieces, and if you have even a drop of Irish blood in you, or just wish you were Irish, I urge you to listen to this album. The music will haunt you long after you finish listening, and this is one album you will want to play again and again. A great companion album is the soundtrack to the television mini-series "Out of Ireland", another documentary about the Irish diaspora in the United States. You will find some of the same acclaimed Irish and Irish-American artists on that album as you will this album, such as Mick Moloney and Eileen Ivers. Paddy Moloney and the Chieftains obviously put a lot of love into this album and it shows in the choices of pieces they selected to represent the Irish struggle both in Ireland and in the US. A brilliant compilation of artists and music, and highly recommended, even if you aren't Irish, but just wish you were. If you are Irish, keep that box of Kleenex handy - you're going to need it!

5 out of 5 stars The Long Journey Home.......2001-05-27

Absolutely hauntingly beautiful melodies! A must for anyone of Irish descent.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the Miniseries.......2001-03-07

This is a must for any Chieftan's fan, or fan of Celtic music in general. Paddy Moloney did a masterful job of detailing the Irish American experience through music -- although the soundtrack is head and shoulders above the miniseries for which it was created. That is most notable for its whitewash of watershed Irish American events like the Civil War draft riots (although it did put Butte, Montana back on the map.) At any rate, nothing, but nothing on this earth comes close to topping the pure poetry of Vince Gill's rendition of the The Bard of Armagh/The Streets of Laredo. It still gives me goosebumps. And if Elvis Costello's end theme doesn't raise your combined national sympathies, you just ain't human!

5 out of 5 stars A Celtic Must!.......2001-02-18

I have to admit this is one of the best Celtic albums I've heard! Like most Irish music, it reflects the beauty and heart of the Irish homeland, but what makes this album especially unique is that it also depicts the feelings of the Irish in America for their homeland. Each of these songs are really good and bring the heart of Ireland to America.

Shenandoah- This song sounds like a combination of American gospel and Irish music. It is of American origin, but shows many of the feelings of the Amercians and Irish shared. Van Morrison the the chorum put a lot of rythm and beauty in the words.

Main Theme- This track goes to the tune of "The Dawning of the Day", or "Raglan Road". Hearing this song makes me think of the words of the poem by Patrick Kavanagh. I really love the Chieftains' interpretation of this melody.

Paddy's Lamentation/Ships Are Sailing- This song was veryu dramatically performed by Mary Black who has such an excellent voice, I regret never hearing her music before! The topic of the song is the hardships the Irish went through when some camm during the Civil War. Mary Black puts a lot of meaning and sincerity in the lyrics and melody alike. She is so good! Mairtin O'Conner, the master accordian who has been everywhere from Riverdance to Clannad, brings an uplifting melody in "Ships Are Sailing".

Emigration Theme- This music actually allows one to picture images, thoughts, and feelings of that time. Thousands of people were leaving home to come to a new land. Were they scared? excited? You have to interpret yourself.

The Bard of Armagh/Streets of Laredo- This is one my favorites, performed by the great singer Vince Gill. The lyrics are so beautiful and uplifting. Those in Ireland still remembered those who left and those who left still remembered those who stayed.

Skibbereen- Sinead 0'Connor does just as surprisingly well for this song as she did for "Factory Girl" on "Tears of Stone". She does well at dramaticising the mood, and telling stories in songs. "Skibbereen" tells of the dark hardships emigrants experienced before they left their native land. Sad and poignant, it touches feelings and thoughts.

The Night Larry Was Strechted- This is a fun jig to listen to. Long ago, the Irish brought many jigs to America that Americans fell in love with

White Potatoes- This Gaelic song is one of the best Gaelic songs I've ever heard and Paddy Moloney made an excellent arrangement on the uillean pipes. This song shows how sad poor farmers were to discover their crops and food were gone. It has an English translation, but I wish it also had the Gaelic words.

Famine Theme-This song brings all of the heartbreaking sorrows of that time period. This music does not just seem like the music you would hear in a documentary, but the music of the past and the stories of the tragedies.

Muldoon, the Solid Man/Grandfather's Tune- This is kind of a funny song, which was sung very well by Mick Moloney. It brings much joy and pride to the Irish, which helped many escape the horrors of the famine.

An Raibh Tu Ag An Gcarraig?- This is one of the best songs, performed by the very excellent Norwegian singer, Sissel, who also sang in the score to "Titanic". Her beautiful Scandanavian voice captures your attention and whispers the special message of the song. It also has well done keyboarding and fiddle music by other Scandanavian performers. The lovely words, enchanting harmony, and poignant feeling makes this song irresistable.

O'Carolan's Farewell- This song is by the ancient composer O'Carolan. It is very dramatic in feeling.

Bean Phaidin- This is a very simple song, performed by Kevin Coneff of the Chieftains. He sings in Gaelic and plays the bodhron. It has good rythm and sound. I wish it had a translation.

O'Donnel's Lament/ Reel With the Beryle- Eileen Ivers knows how to help give a Celtic touch. She playes with slow beauty at first, but moves on the the up beat jig. She brings a lot of energy to the fiddle.

American Theme- Oooh, this is such a good second to last track! It has very good instrumentation, but what is really good is the whole meaning of it. It brings a feeling of patriotism, honor, glory, and prosperity. For the Irish left Ireland in poverty and distress, but were reborn as Americans. The sound of the drum and echoes of whistles brings triumph and joy.

Long Journey Home Anthem- This is by far the best song on the whole album. The music is just as patriotic and triumphant as the previous track. It has orchestra, traditional instruments, drums, and powerful voices by the men of Anuna. There also are the beautiful lyrics, written and sung by Elvis Costello. I just love the verses and meaning of the words. It brings the heart of both Ireland and America! "Red, white and blue; Green, white, and gold".

So, this is one of the best Celtic albums I've heard. I still rank "Celtic Solstice" by Paul Winter and Friends as the best Celtic album I've ever heard, but this album I place as second. Third is "Legends" by Phil Coulter and James Galway. Anyway, this album is a must have! and a worth getting.

Erik Wollo's works are overlooked gems of modern instrumental music. From his home in Norway, Wollo's been sending out missives of mood and ambience since the mid-1980s with albums like Silver Beach and Solstice. Last year's U.S. release of Guitar Nova explored the acoustic-guitar side of this musician in multilayered, overdubbed soundscapes that retained the ambience and structure of his electronic works. With Wind Journey, he returns to synthesizers but keeps his electric guitar at hand for some gloriously heroic solos, especially on "Dream Line." A subtle, tugging ostinato pattern builds into layers of keyboard orchestrations topped by guitar, which starts out in a pastoral, acoustic mode but segues into a soaring lead solo that recalls Steve Hackett during his Spectral Mornings era. Wind Journey is centered by Seasons Suite, a 10-part sequence of moody vignettes. Erik Wollo's roots in progressive rock are clear and he uses them to articulate a cinematic music. While Wollo lives in a country with some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, he composes much of his music in a basement studio. The worlds he creates are strictly from the imagination, and what a vivid imagination it is. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Ambient music that takes me far, far away!.......2003-04-24

I have purchased cd in the summer of 2002. Back then, all I could think of doing was listen to 88.5 on the radio and hope that they will play music from Erik Wollo. The first song I heard was "Dream Lines". The music didn't seem familiar to me at first. I didn't consider it really ambient but it turned out that it was. After listening to it, I was into it very much. I never heard such a song played like that before and I knew it was something I would like. Wollo plays the guitar in a way that the sound echoes in my head and makes me feel like Im somewhere far and distant. In a short time, I heard "Wind Journey 1". That was amazing. After I listened to it few more times, I was into it so much that I couldn't help buying it from Amazon.com. Just about every beat and sound seems to echoe as if it was played outside where nothing surrounds you and where the music can travel and be heard. Listen to the samples and decide. Buying this cd is something to consider.

5 out of 5 stars What a surprise and completely different from the last CD.......2001-09-27

The last Eric Wollo CD featured wonderful virtuoso guitar, most closely akin to a "fingerpicking" style. Each piece was different, almost like a "best of" CD. This CD is completely different in that the artist uses the guitar as part of a series of thematic atmospheric tone poems based on the idea of wind and its forms and effects. The overall feel of the music is very ambient, with the guitar used less as a melody-maker, and more as a symphonic, electronic instrument, almost like a timescape. The orchestration includes atmospheric electronic soundscapes within which the artist creates mood music of the highest quality. I was absolutely fascinated by the CD on first hearing it, and it only gets better with each re-playing as I discover new nuances to the music. What a master of the guitar this man is. I highly recommend that you take a listen to this CD, and take a journey into the wind with Mr Wollo. This is a thinking person's delight!!!

This is Chanticleer's 25th recording and also marks its 25th anniversary season. The title refers to the group's wide-ranging repertoire; this disc includes Mexican baroque, traditional American songs in various styles and music commissioned by Chanticleer itself. A program that tries to please everybody is bound to disappoint somebody; however, no one could be disappointed by the singing. The sound of these 12 unaccompanied male voices has an unearthly, celestial beauty and purity; their blend is perfect. Though the singers rarely use vibrato, their intonation is impeccable both together and in solos. Their expressive range and stylistic versatility are incredible: they can project tenderness, pleading, and bitter protest and are equally at home in plainchant, Latin hymns, blues, spirituals, shouts and crooning. Among the highlights are the three opening hymns, settings of two poems of Torquato Tasso by William Hawley, commissioned by Chanticleer, which combine 16th- and 20th-century styles, and the two final folksongs, the last with a stride-style piano accompaniment, making a rousing, exuberant ending. The booklet, in three languages, is well laid-out and informative. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, ecclectic album.......2007-07-11

This CD is a great example of Chanticleer's phenomenal versatility, and it has something for everyone to appreciate. The Appalacian twang on the two Billings pieces is a bit much, but otherwise Chanticleer is in top form here and really shows what they are made of. As for the recording itself, something about the micing or acoustics in the recording process causes the countertenors to be just a tad too strong on a few tracks, but it's not a major problem.

To me, the most extraordinary tracks are: The Un-Covered Wagon with it's surreal effects and incredible array of vocal techniques, Willow Weep For Me, Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair (Michael Lichtenauer's solo floats so effortlessly in a mixed vocal register, I have never heard anything like it!), and Whispers.

5 out of 5 stars Warning: This CD Is Addictive.......2006-12-10

I purchased this CD after hearing this magnificent choral group sing "Calling My Children Home" in a recent concert. Written by Doyle Lawson (from the group "Quicksilver"), Charlie Waller and Robert Yates, the song is a standard bluegrass number I had known for years (Emmy Lou Harris for one has recorded it); but I had no idea it had found its way to San Francisco. Chanticleer has made this song their own. I cannot imagine anyone else's version coming close to theirs.

The group sings 17 other songs on this CD, most of them arranged by Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer's music director. Their version of William Billings' "David's Lamentation," a Sacred Harp work, will blow you away. Another favorite of mine is "Wayfaring' Stranger." There are also two Stephen Foster songs included, "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Camptown Races" as well as Gershwin and other American composers.

There seems to be no kind of music that this group cannot sing better than most other groups. They remind us that there is no musical instrument more beautiful than the human voice.

This CD should be one for the time capsule.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth buying.......2005-08-16

Chanticleer fans know what to expect in terms of vocal quality, and won't be disappointed. I agree with another reviewer that the Appalachian accent is a little over the top, but I thought the shape-note style was perfect: brilliant sound, but not that nasal.

I enjoyed the many styles of music in this CD, but since I tend to listen to CDs straight through as albums, I found it a little disconcerting to go so suddenly from one style to the next (e.g., Mexican Baroque to shape note).

That being said, everything is splendidly, sensitively performed. The renditions of "Whispers" and "The Un-Covered Wagon" are breathtaking. By all means, buy and enjoy this!

4 out of 5 stars Good variety of American Choral Music.......2005-01-03

This album features a wonderful selection of "American" choral music. I'm not a big fan of the "stylized" singing of the shape-note pieces (with the nasal voices), but that is my only complaint. My favorite piece is Steven Stucky's "Whispers" which is an artfully crafted homage to Orlando Gibbons' "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears" and William Byrd's "Ave Verum Corpus." Joseph Jennings and Chanticleer effectively demonstrate that there is no "defining" American choral music and it is this rich panoply of variety which is so enchanting!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!!.......2003-10-25

This album shows Chanticleer's great talent and it displays they're wonderful voices. I've seen them perform pieces from this album and they do it with such passion. It's wonderful. If you don't get this or any of their albums you truly are missing out!!

5 out of 5 stars BEST CD I OWN!.......2007-05-13

This is by far my favorite Sarah Brightman Cd. Although it is probably her most pop oriented cd, it totally rocks! Most of the songs have a Middle Eastern Edge to them and are awesome to blast in the car! Make sure to try to get the version with either the bonus Dvd or the french tracks!

FIVE STARS!

2 out of 5 stars not the best.......2007-04-12

I agree with "music fan" about this CD. Eden is a good album, and she's a good artist. But either this album was poorly produced or something, because this does not show her best. I wouldn't classify this as world music at all, because the instruments aren't used and it's more classical pop; if that's a genre. It seemed rambly to me with many of the songs sounding similar and lacking originality. I love her, she's unique in her genre. But she really shines as a classicist, with Classics, her work by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who she married) and operatic albums. This is what she's best at, so her collaborations on Eden and La Luna, which are classical in nature but still allowed her to branch out musically, turned out good. I have a lot of her albums, but I wouldn't buy this one. It's more something to listen to once. A few of the songs are good, the album isn't terrible, but it's not very good.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD/DVD set.......2007-03-31

This is a very good CD/DVD set, beautiful music and performance.I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-24

Sarah's voice soars! I love her voice and I'm a new fan. ^^ I've heard her name lots of times before from people I know and when I received some of her CDs and videos as early Christmas present, I was in awe! She definitely has the voice of an angel.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Forbidden.......2006-06-10

"Harem" is probably one of Sarah Brightman's most unique albums to date. Rarely an artist can captivate the sounds of the far east and be able to mix them in well with a western feel. west meets east if you will. Its nearly impossible to pick out one favorite out of the 14 tracks on the album. You can't choose "Harem" over "The War Is Over" or "Arabian Nights". All the songs on the album are the best and do the album justice and fit perfectly in their own way, as the theme is quite clear: Middle-Eastern music with a hint of pop and some club sounds. And while the album could have ended at "Until the End of Time" (yet another beautiful song on the album), Brightman ends the album with "You Take My Breath Away" (originally from her album Fly). Personally, this track should have been only present on "Harem" and not on the album "Fly". An excellent way nonetheless of ending the album.

The DVD shows the making of the album, and the video Harem is also on the DVD along with an alternate version to the video. Its the first time i've ever seen a video from Sarah Brightman and i must say, i'm not disappointed at all.

I'm anxiously awaiting a new album. I'm a new fan of Brightman's and i love what i'm hearing from this album. Highly recommended.

With the soprano solos and choral numbers, but with none of the spoken parts, Esa-Pekka Salonen's account is a good compromise on the "completeness" issue. Incisive and athletic in his approach, Salonen also shows plenty of finesse and a good ear--but not the overall grasp and emotional sensitivity of Herbert Blomstedt. --Ted Libbey

Anyhow, I HAVE also listened to the delightful album by Maestro Paavo Jarvi, and it has at least one advantage over this recording in that it offers even more of the music and singing in its original stage-play form. The only big difference between these albums with respect to 'originality' - apart from the absence of some musical pieces on the Salonen recording - lies in 'Solveig's Lullaby', which on the Jarvi album is interlaced with parts of the 'Whitsun Hymn' that preceded it (as it is in the original stage play-music?).
This recording by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen is IMHO a great testimonial to Edvard Hagerup Grieg's (1843-1907) art. And not in the latest place to the truthful and what I would like to call 'Nordic' vision of the conductor.
The music making is highly concentrated and disciplined (somewhat 'leaner' or more 'athletic' than for Paavo Jarvi), but at the same time completely and utterly involved, especially with the Norwegian feel and atmosphere of the music, I believe - these ARE Norwegians, playing quintessentially Norwegian music (Peer Gynt IS their national epic) that (should) speak to them in a most direct way! The 'Halling' and 'Springar' have I think never sounded so completely like the original Norwegian folk melodies which they are, which comes of course as no surprise with these musicians.
Maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen has a wonderful feel for the fresh and lilting character of much of the music but on the other hand he is also very much in touch with the melancholic side of Grieg's music, which is, I think, quintessential Norwegian, a country that invariably must evoke a sense of melancholy with its long, snow laden winters, its short bursts of summer in which to rejoice in the fruits of the land, grown with much toil, and its clear brooks, lakes and rivers, its Trout and Salmon, Moose and Reindeer, Eagle and White-throated Dipper, Lynx and Wolverine, its vast coniferous forests, deep fjords, rolling, barren fjells ... and scattered widely throughout the splendour of relentless nature ... ancient churches, farms and villages. Norway is a most beautiful country, and the Norwegians themselves certainly know it! Much of the music of Grieg (1843-1907) is partly born of this sense of pride of the land and the striving for complete national independence (gained in 1905, so Grieg himself could be a happy witness to the fact).
On this recording there is no overdoing it (also a result of the 'athletic' playing style), the conductor seemingly taking the music on face value, letting it speak in all its pure and simple beauty. There is a nicely introvert quality to the playing which quite befits the music. But on the other hand, the conductor just as well lets the music dance and swagger energetically when needed, for example in the wedding scenes and in the scenes with the Trolls. Here, the energy is flowing freely. The naturalness of playing by the members of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra - who certainly possess the necessary Norwegian spirit to fully make this music come to life in a way that the composer may have meant and loved (?) - combined with finely nuanced directing with a keen eye for melodic flow make this album - at least in my view - a top recommendation. And last but not least, the combination of this orchestra and this conductor together with the warmly sympathetic and radiant voice of Barbara Hendricks is the purest and most moving imaginable, sounding especially involved and convincing in the closing 'Solveigs vuggevise'.
This music here sounds so completely honest and so absolutely evocative that no one who loves good pure and simple serious (or classical) music could (or should) IMHO do without it. If really pressed for, one could even be tempted to call this a truly great recording - and an ideal step onwards from the all-too-brief Suites and on towards the complete recordings by Dreier and Ruud.

5 out of 5 stars Certainly NOT Incidental!.......2000-07-08

This 'incidental music' is by no means incidental. The more than 20 pieces in this collection are equally dramatic and at the same time diverse. In the symphony hall we are used to hearing just a few of these pieces in the two usual suites (#1 and #2). After hearing this recording you will realize you have been robbed all these years. Salonen brings a warmth to this legend so that these characters are somehow personable and human. (His scholarship in Scandinavian mthys and legends has paid off!) But the music exhibits such force that you cannot help but be moved. If you have not heard "In the Hall of the Mountain King" with full choir (as is performed here) then you have never fully experienced this famous piece. Also the plaintive folk violin and the angelically human solos will make you wonder why you have never heard them in this form. This is the only version of Peer Gynt worth buying, even though some of the other recordings are quite good, too. They are simply incomplete in every way. And besides, this Scandinavian collection of musicians can pull this off as no others can.

Given the film's fevered, rooted-in-cold-war-history nuclear tensions and claustrophobic, intensely Russian settings, promising newcomer/Hans Zimmer protégé Klaus Badelt (The Time Machine and contributions to Gladiator and Pearl Harbor) was saddled with more than a few expectations in scoring director Kathryn Bigelow's Soviet sub thriller. But Badelt has admirably risen to the occasion, conjuring up an orchestral score (masterfully performed by the Kirov Orchestra and Chorus under Valery Giergiev) rooted in moody Russian classicism--and a dash of Zimmer's favorite Holstian drama as well. The centerpiece here is the neo-classical Suite for Orchestra and Chorus in G Minor, its four movements ("Fear," "Fate," "War," "Soul") powerfully underscoring the film's unrelenting pressure cooker of drama and emotion. Badelt's use of excerpts from Richard Einhorn's Voices of Light suite ("Reactor") is equally inspired, its haunting choral touches and spare, evocative arrangements imparting some compelling gravitas to the story's dark sense of impending doom. A score as noble, if emotionally ominous, as the 20th-century Russian masters who inspired it. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars One of the best scores .......2006-06-09

Klaus Badelt is another wonderful artist who can make the music be the movie. Rich with themes that fit the russian genre. The last track 'reunion' brings tears to my eyes picturing scenes from the movie. This music grabs you emotionally! Wonderful score.

5 out of 5 stars An Underwater Masterpiece..........2004-02-01

My favorite one in my movie soundtrack collection! The music of K-19 made the movie even more moving. If you are looking for great music pieces for a "every goes wrong" russian submarine, and I mean the feel of the waves, tensions on board and the heroic efforts, this is "the" soundtrack. I have to admit, even thought I loved the movie, it`s wouldn`t been as great without the real struggling russian submarine music effect that Klaus Badelt created. The music moves me everytime I hear it...I close my eyes and I can see myself on board of this boat peeking out of the waves with the cold winds on my cheeks.

5 out of 5 stars Classic (al ) Badelt.......2003-07-16

For decades there has been a fine line between classical based orchestral film score music and the true classical masters. Well for K-19 Klaus Badelt has become Tchaikovsky reincarnated. This is the most classical based score I have heard for many years (Horner does a fine Ralph Vaughn -Williams) and this is one the Russian master would be proud of. The first four tracks are even called "Suites for Orchestra and Chorus". Badelt has again shown that his first hit "Time Machine" was no one hit wonder story. Klaus Badelt has proven to be the new "wunderkind" of film scores and his music for the forthcoming "Ned Kelly" again proves that. But for now enjoy this one if you love both submarine scores "Hunt for Red October" and "Crimson Tide". K-19 makes it a fine trio.

5 out of 5 stars Music the masters would be proud to claim!.......2003-03-21

This album is filled with music that the early master composers would be proud to claim as their own. The first six tracks are pure, sweet, pasionate Russian classical orchestra music, befitting any of the symphonic works of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and even more so, Rachmaniov. Klaus Badelt has written music which would please the Gods. My heartfelt thanks as a simple listener, for this musical treat.

4 out of 5 stars Another great Klaus Badelt score.......2002-12-01

After his tremendous success with The Time Machine, Klaus Badelt returns once again with another great score to K-19: The Widowmaker. With an outstanding performance by The Kirov Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of conductor Valery Gergiev, Badelt proves that once again, he is one of the hottest new composers out there. Badelt starts with "Suite for Orchestra and Chorus in G Minor" which is a classical piece that he wrote which the score's main themes were developed. "Fear - Largo" contains a militaristic theme that reoccurs throughout the score several times. "Fate - Adagio" contains a dark string crescendo that resorts to a lovely piece of music. "War - Allegro" is an action cue that contains some excellent and difficult horn parts. "Soul - Mysterioso" is the best of the 4 with the themes occurring again in full force with the orchestra and chorus. The rest of the score is derived from these first 4 tracks and contains different versions of those themes each time you hear them, so they never get boring. "Home" is a waltz version of the theme heard in "Fear - Largo" and "Heroes" gives us the theme again in full force. "Journey" contains a male chorus chanting the main theme in Russian, much like Basil Poledouris used a chorus in The Hunt For Red October. "Missile Launch - The Rescue" is a long action cue that sounds a lot like "War - Allegro" with the difficult horn parts. "Reunion" ends the score in an excellent fashion with the main themes occurring one more time sending the listener off with great melodies. "Reactor - Selections from Voices of Light" is a low key piece composed by Richard Einhorn that fits in nicely with the score, but is nowhere near as good. I was hoping to give this score 5 stars, but for me, it just lacked that one little thing that makes it an outstanding score that you want to hear over and over again. It is a great score with a wonderful sound and great themes, however, and Klaus Badelt impresses me once again.
