Drums on Fire [Enhanced]
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Drums on Fire is a collaboration between two master drummers from two corners of the world--British James Asher and Indian Sivamani. Asher's driving percussion, Sivamani's ecstatic rhythms, and occasional melodic flutes, saxes and guitars create an album with both pulse and heart. Features dozens of rhythm-producing instruments that range from djembe, bazouki and taiko to buckets, birdcalls and Sivamani's own chant-scat.

Great melodic beats - pulsing drums.......2004-08-09
If drum beats can be melodic - this album shows that.
Two great gurus of the drums Sivamani - with his ecstatic beats, vedic chantics to add a mood to the music, crazy one-offs with the other great guru James Asher who with his own pulsing beats creates a superb album.
And inspite of a whole album of drum beats - it doesnt bore you in the least. The mood changes totally across the album to revive and keep up the interest in listening intently and marvel at the fluidity of the pair.
There are occasional melodic tunes too - with flutes and other instruments. But best of all is Sivamani's rapid fire chants and his vocal beats that he syncronises with the actual drums.
If you want more of such ecstatic intrumentation and percussion in particular - should check out "Blazing Drums" which has some more masters in it like Trilok Gurtu, Kale Karsh etc.

Disk 1 - As Expected.. Disk 2- OMFG!!! UNBELIEVEABLE!!.......2006-07-27
I don't know what the "F" John K. Reed is talking about. Pay his reveiw no mind; both disks are...I really am at a loss for words for expressing how GREAT both disks are.
I am a regular Amazon customer, but I rarely feel the need (or have the time) to write a review. In this case I just had to let it be known how HOT TO DEATH this album is. Especially after reading Mr. Reed's reveiw. I haven't the faintest clue what he is smoking. All that I can say is that Disk 1 has all the usual classics that you know and love like "I Want to be Free", "Sweet Sticky Thing" and "Heaven Must be Like This". All of which, have been most of my favorite songs throughout my life. So basically disk 1's greatness was a given.
Disk 2?!?! It has been a very long time since a song made me smile and feel good all over within the first 15 seconds of listening to it for the first time. "Bi-Centennial" did that to me. It is very smooth and playful. Then another first listen for me was "Good Luck Charm". It's about 9 minutes and 52 seconds long. HOT! HOT!! HOT!!! A Classic I never Heard before!! The Ohio Players really pimp their way through that track sooooooo frickin' hard!! "Good Luck Charm" is a track that if your not careful you could be subconciously persuaded, by that song, to buy a '72 Cadillac Coupe De Ville (on 24s with candypaint) just to cop a mean gangster lean and ride around in blasting that track. It's the most listened to song in my household at the moment. "Time Slips Away" is another Hot CLASSIC I NEVER HEARD until now!
Disk 2 knocked my socks off, period. It basically reaffirmed to me how funky and soulful the Ohio Players are and that they are One of the Best R+B, Funk groups of all time. So much in so that I am now going to collect all of their albums, not just this compalation.
THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HAVE FOR A PLAYER. ADD TO CART AND COP IT TO BE A WITNESS TO GREATNESS!!
This CD is the bomb!!!.......2001-09-23
Anyone that grew up listening to the Ohio Players in the 70's should own this collection. It covers all ground. It's a keeper. I wouldn't have it any other way. To me, Heaven is owning this CD. It has all the favorites.
The Best Anthology You'll Find.......2001-07-14
A fabulous overview of a very underrated funk band. If you came of age in the mid-1970s and ventured beyond horrible Top 40 pop radio, then inevitably you chanced upon the Ohio Players. Hard-working and prodigious like great jazz players, they were always consummate musicians. This captures the best of their popular 1970s Mercury releases (nearly as interesting for their practically X-rated album covers as the great music within). All of the classics are here ("Love Rollercoaster" and "Fire") but one listen will expose you to the other fine, albeit less heard, cuts that never crossed over to 70s Top 40 but were staples of large city R&B stations -- and curiously making a comeback on "gold soul/funk R&B" radio formats of 2001. (Some of) these guys are still on the road in the summer of 2001, proving that good funk never dies. A worthy investment.
PLAY ON.......2001-07-07
Oh yes, the Players. In my opinion the best funk band ever. From "Skin Tight" there is the X-tremely funky jam of the title cut and the incredible ballad "Heaven Must Be Like This". From "Fire" the incredible title track and check out the drum work on the smoldering ballad "I Want To Be Free". "Honey" is well represented with four cuts including the incredible jazz influenced "Sweet Sticky Thing". The second side includes latter day efforts that are not as well known but just as good. "Who'd She Coo" is so cool that the funk just flows throughout it and from "Gold" they included one of the two new cuts that were included on that release, "Only A Child Can Love" which is superior to Feel The Beat anyway. Check out "Body Vibes" too, wow, funky and jazzy it just flows and love the smokin funk and space sounds on "Funk-o-nots". Best of all these are all the full length album versions not the singles which do not do the Players justice. As a bonus the last three tracks are previously unreleased tracks from the "Jass-Ay-Lady" sessions (it was to be a double album). Too bad there aren't bands like this around anymore. Play On!
Disc 1 - tremendous Disc 2 - disappointing.......2001-03-17
Had the producers elected to include different albeit less popular selections on disc 2 then the compilation could have been absolutely masterful.
If you're at all a fan of 70's funk then this one is required but there's enough uninteresting material to bring down the overall rating.

Customer Reviews:
Probably The Least Popular of the Era.......2005-06-12
This was probably the least unpopular Culture Club album of the 80's. George drastically changed his look for promotion of this release. He sported bright red hair and various brightly colored wigs in the video for the songs first single "The War Song." Culture Club turned political. Not only did the look change, but the music changed. The album didnt really have the reggae sound of the first album or the pop sound of "Colour By Numbers." it just sounded different. Buy this one if you must complete your Culture Club collection.
Waking Up With the Band on Fire.......2004-03-26
This third album by Culture Club was a big disaster for the band in terms of songwriting, and--although these are not always good indications of an album's worth though they are in this case--sales and billboard chart rankings. It was a big disappointing follow-up to the brilliant Colour By Numbers. Even Boy George in his autobiography Take It Like a Man admits it is "the most disjointed album we ever made" (pg. 249). The only real hit off the album was "The War Song" which I think many found to be more humorous than good and was promoted by a big production music video. "War, war is stupid and people are stupid"? It probably received more airplay than it deserved for those patronizing lyrics! "The Medal Song" was the second single about the 1940s actress Frances Farmer who was accused of being a Communist, shut away by her mother and given a lobotomy. Boy George wrote it after watching the film Frances (pg. 255). It is a very disjointed track to the point of annoying. "Mistake No. 3" (the third single) is a nice ballad but unremarkable. Next to "Victims," it really falls flat. The rest of the album goes every which way in terms of styles, some even sounding like show tunes (i.e. "Crime Time"). My favorite is "The Dive," which is rather catchy. Still, it is a far cry from Colour By Numbers which had 5 very recognizable singles and was 80s pop at its best from start to finish. If you must have this album, definitely get the re-mastered 2003 version which includes a number of excellent extra tracks.

Eclectic and Fun Mix of Songs.......2002-11-10
This CD is a must-have for any true Boy George/Culture Club fan. Although this album was not commercially successful, it's a solid release with a true sound of the 80's. What I find most amazing about this release is George's vocals; powerful and at their most soulful. I really enjoy each track on this collection, but my favorites are "the Dive" and "Crime Time". As with most of George's lyrics, there are underlying messages in each song, with the exception of "The War Song" with it's in-your-face, blunt statement that "War is Stupid and People are Stupid", which offended the overly sensitive when released in 1984.
Overall, this is a great effort by CC that most people overlooked.

This is an over-the-top,in your face sonic assault that is not for the faint of heart! Not for all tastes, but if it "clicks" you'll find this addictive and will want to add about another dozen stars to the above rating!
If your familiar with fellow Japanese band High Rise, think along those lines though even louder(!)and I think faster and more "freak out" for sure! This stuff just doesn't stop or let up,riff salad to the max!! More please.......
