From Beale Street to Oblivion lacks the fire and passion heard on 2005's excessively excellent Robot Hive/Exodus. It's not that the Maryland-based band has betrayed the sound that made it famous or that it has suddenly become incapable of writing a memorable riff of having a go at a good ol' rock 'n' blues stomp. Rather, it's that not much of anything awe-inspiring happens in the course of these 12 tunes. Listeners have to wait until the record's third track ("The Devil & Me") before the rockin' really sticks and from that point forward wade through several successive almost-great moments, feeling the stinging darts of disappointment as the album moves toward the dark and narrow sidewalks of Beale Street's end. Some of the tracks--namely "Electric Worry" and "Rapture of Riddley Walker" are impossibly pleasing but taken as a whole, this serves as a bummer set from one of the most promising and consistently imaginative acts. Certainly not a bad record for most bands but one that falls below the high expectations held for Clutch. --Jedd Beaudoin

Could have been better.......2007-08-03

Every Clutch record has taken a while to grow on me, but this is the first one in the band's history that just never has. I don't mind that it's bluesy, I don't mind the keyboard player, I don't mind the Leslie cabs, I don't mind Neil singing bass, but I do mind the lack of compelling narrative and I definitely mind the inclusion of the "One Eye Dollar" remake in the track listing--there was nothing wrong with the original version and this one doesn't really add much to the album other than padding. A couple of tracks certainly do "rock" in the traditional sense, but the mish-mash of world religions, science fiction and citizen's band radio conversations that have always elevated paranoid convicts, truckers and fishermen to godhood in Clutch songs of old is spread a little too thin on this album for my taste. It certainly isn't bad, but it seems shallow in comparison. I guess I'm just one of those people who pays too much attention to the words.

Masters of Originality.......2007-07-30

I am a long-standing Clutch fan. Every song they've ever put out impresses me in its own way. This album is simply the latest and greatest. It's not the heaviest music they've put out, if that's what you're looking for, but it's certainly the smartest and most progressive. These guys are definitely growing up.

Clutch got the Blues...!.......2007-07-04

Yep, this is one of those rare, good, rock n' roll blues albums. Clutch have seamlessly combined their own unique 'rawk' sound with the sounds of old.... the blues. Damn, this album's actually made me get into the blues and look at it in a whole new light. This is a great album... different to their previous efforts, but great none the less. And you can't go wrong with an unique voice like Neil Fallon's. This is the type of album that spits in the face of those sucky emo bands that are all over the place now... This is the real deal. Nice bluesy rhythms (drums and bass), good slide guitar every now and then... and ofcourse the harmonica. All fit in very nicely. Without exaggeration, almost all the track are brilliant... been listening to the album since it came out and it stills sounds great. Stand out tracks - Black Umbrella (the bluesiest of the lot), The Devil and me, Electric worry, Power Player, When Vegans attack, Shiny Mr Cadillackness.... good stuff.

12 years after 'Tight Like That' and Clutch is better than ever.......2007-06-30

When I was 14 I loved the Clutch CD that my friends dad gave us to listen to. It was the coolest, funkiest music I had ever heard. Now I am almost 26 and this album makes me feel the same way. Clutch just gets better with age. This album will make you dance. I just seen them perform live at Bonnaroo, second time this year. And they blew the roof off!! This album is heavily blues influenced and it just rocks!!! I can't keep it out of my car CD player, even though I drive alot faster when I listen to it.

A disappointment.......2007-06-25

In the past Clutch has always stayed just far enough away from southern rock to not be lumped in with those bands. On this album they cross too far into that category and it becomes their most predictable sounding and bland album to date.

If you are a first time listener to Clutch, skip this album and buy the self titled album 'Clutch', Elephant Riders, or Blast Tyrant. All three are far better than this.

CLUTCH is the most underrated band! .......2007-04-15

This album has a little of everything from Clutch. Blues, rock, metal, jazz, even RAP! (Rock and Roll Outlaw has that raw rap-rock feel to it.) In the beginning, Clutch was more of a mainstream hard rock/metal band. But the band had evolved into something more complex and spontaneous that it makes this band so under rated that the gov't should make it a law to have Clutch on every rock station in heavy rotation. I have just about every single CD Clutch has put out. I can't wait for their new one to come out! Electric Worry is a great tune with a little "bluesy" surprise! Bottom line: You can not go wrong with any Clutch album. To Clutch newbies: I recommend to start with this album (self titled Clutch)and follow up with Pure Rock Fury. This "jump" from 1995 to 2001 will give you the "taste" of pure Clutch in it's ever growing,reinventing style! Each album has it's own feel/vibe/taste to it. Any really good, talented band does this. That's the whole point of buying/making music is some fresh tunes, right?

My favorite Clutch.......2007-02-20

This is my favorite clutch CD. I know their music has evolved through the years, but this is the album when everything came together. Their last 2 CD's "blast tyrant" and "exodus" are very close in excellence.

Good but least Favorite of Clutch.......2006-08-21

Good album, but definitely my least favorite Clutch CD. I got into Clutch through their later albums and the band is SO much better now than when this CD was recorded. They have really expanded their sound and horizons. So in that respect this CD just doesn't do much for me. When you compare this CD to Blast Tyrant and Pure Rock Fury it just doesn't hold up IMO. But that's a good thing IMO because it shows that this band just keeps getting better and better. On this CD it seems like they get trapped in a particular mood or groove and never really break out of it.

Like Marlon Brando, but Bigger.......2006-06-17

If you are only going to buy one album from Clutch, or modern rock for that matter, you have to pick this one up. Clutch stuff ingenious lyrics, grooving basslines, perfectly excecuted drums, and guitar riffs that sound like they came straight from the Seventies into one big bag and hardly charge you anything for it.(I got my copy of this record, and all their others with the exception of robot hive and blast tyrant for $9.00 Canadian)

You dont see many bands like Clutch around anymore. What do i mean? Well Clutch have been making consistantly great records for years, and refuse to follow any sort of trend. In case you didn't notice, were not in the Seventies, so the whole trippy guitar playing style has been shoved out the window and has been replaced with the SAME chord played over and over again. And guess what? The lyrics don't follow the usual Rock pattern of Sex, Drugs & Rock and Roll cliched pattern. Neil Fallon is one of my favorite songwritters because he has such a unique way of crafting lyrics that somehow match perfectly with the music.

Check out Clutch if your into rock in general, or you just like original music.

These guys are crazy. Neil Fallon's voice has more attitude than Mike Tyson on the wrong medication, and the rest of the package will have you cracking open a cold beer and banging your head until it gathers enough speed to launch off your body, through your roof and into outer space with beer drool hanging off your lower lip ... and what a beautiful smile Clutch has put on your face. Anyone into hard, heavy, sleazy, sludgey, insane hard rock/metal bands, needs Clutch in their collection the way Whitney Houston needs weed.

Sex, Beer and Pizza: the only things in life as good as Clutch........2006-02-28

Well, not much to say here. Neil (the bad man with a thousand voices) and company do exactly what the title says: they unleash Pure Rock Fury. Clutch is one of those bands where you can't just listen to two or three tunes off the CD; it demands to be played in its entirety while you and your friends are hopefully partying and freaking out because no band you ever heard in your life jams the way Clutch does. A lot different than the classic Transnational Speedway, but it's still Clutch and every tune is a ten out ten. Don't pass this one up. If you're new to Clutch and want to check one CD out before buying a bunch of them, get Tranational Speedway League first. After that you'll grab every other one: trust me. And don't forget to raise a glass of beer to the live version of Spacegrass on here!

I've been a huge fan of Clutch for quite a while so my opinion is slightly jaded but .... for the love of Gawwwwd man they ROCK!

Clutch really is a very unique band and although they do revive that 70's hard rock sound it's really and truly something to behold. To me "Pure Rock Fury" is the second coming of Clutch. Their 1st album, "Transnational Speedway" was crunchier and had a big impact on me. The 2nd self-titled was much better, there was a stronger direction and more unique style. The 3rd, "Elephant Riders" was a large departure from the Clutch I knew. Singing, what the hell? It worked and overall "Elephant Riders" is a solid offering but I feel it was a growing pain. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but they didn't seem as surefooted as usual. but...

"Pure Rock Fury" is altogether an entirely different monster, and I do mean monster. The first guitar line kind of sums up the whole album, it's loud, crunchy, precise, and full of energy. "American Sleep" is a solid jam, the musicianship is great as always and Neil seems a bit more solid on the vox.
The second track is definitely the star, a massive assault full hendrix soaked guitar riffs, insane drum fills, tight sure footed bass work, and insane barking vocals full of wit and humor. It's an anthem, really, calling upon those troopers of the CLUTCH army ready to stomp around the pit in their own unique fashion.

From this point the album continues in solid fashion, a bunch of sweet cap'n crunchy hard rock romps, "Open up the Border", "Immortal". Some nice drawn out jams with lots o' rump shaking bass lines, "Red Horse Rainbows" and double geetarr riffage, "Brazenhead". And, of course Clutch always has a couple of those quirky ones, referring to the old red-necked Samuri from "Transnational" on "The Great Outdoors". Along with the head bobbing rap rock funk stew of "Careful with that Mic" which oozes with the groups capability to create music with a kleidoscope of influences. The closer is kind of a two fold punch. "Drink to the Dead" is a nice mid-paced anthem that really gives you the feeling of being in a barroom full inebriated fantasy characters, all swaying back and forth singing about good friends long gone. After that it closes with a live version of the Clutch classic "Spacegrass". If you've ever been to a Clutch show you'd understand why this bonus track is on here. Standing in the crowd awaiting the next song, then you here that bass line you can't help but join in with the rest of the crowd as everyone shouts the lyrics at the top of their lungs.

I can't stress how much I recommend this cd. It's a good time wrapped in plastic. Clutch really do unique Hard rock very well. They are truly an underrated band. They give you the funky head bob with a nice big smile across your face, the solution is so clear.

Being the HUGE Clutch fan that I am it is hard for me to oick a favorite album. This one could be it though. This is a raw, heavy, funky sounding album. Espacially Tim Sult's guitar! My favorite song is "open up the Border" I cannot get enough of the guitar work on that song. Other favorites include; the title track, "Carefull with that mic", "Red Horse Rainbow", "Immortal", and "Drink to the Dead". And the live version of "Spacegrass" is something special! Buy this album. GO SEE CLUTCH LIVE!!!

Outstanding.......2004-04-24

Clutch is one of the only great rock/funk bands around today. I would compare Clutch to RATM, because of their complicated bass lines, outragous guitar riffs, and steady sick drum beats. The vocalist in Clutch is very different then Zach de la roche, which makes Clutch an original band. After "The Elephant Riders" i didnt think Clutch could create anything as great as their former cd, but they pulled it off. Every song has its own unique feel and is great for any music lover. The first 3 tracks are unbelieveable, with very catchy riffs. I also really enjoy the songs "Red Horse Rainbow", "Immortal" and "Drink to the Dead". All of the songs are unique and are great to listen to.

Clutch continues its seemingly endless string of awesome albums with the flawless Robot Hive/Exodus. Opening with deep-fried "The Incomparable Mr. Flannery" and closing with a Tom Waits-esqe cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Who's Been Talking?," Robot clearly demonstrates, once again, Clutch's remarkable musical diversity. Clutch's solid, trademark grooves have as much in common with Gov't Mule as they do with Black Sabbath and Grand Funk Railroad, and their ability to ooze instant classics such as the thunderous "Burning Beard" and the highly danceable "Gullah" is uncanny. Throughout, vocalist/guitarist Neil Fallon sings with a whisky-throated swagger that calls to mind the raw power of AC/DC's Bon Scott tempered with the R&B inflections of Grand Funk's Mark Farner. This blend is particularly evident on the foot-stomping "Never Be Moved." Neil might be the one hard rock vocalist capable of maneuvering with the ill ease of a hip-hop MC, crafting lyrics that are humorous and wise--one of the many gifts that help place Clutch in a class of its own, and a large part of what makes Robot Hive/Exodus a contemporary classic. --Jedd Beaudoin

Rockers must own this.......2007-05-30

If you like (Pepper Keenan's) C.O.C., or old Blackfoot, or Black Sabbath, you will love this record. Do not hesitiate,just buy it. They are unique; I simply mention those other bands as a reference point musically (although Clutch does not sound like any particular one of them, they truly created their own sound!). Chock full of incredible riffage and fantastic lyrics as usual. After long overlooking them, Clutch has become my new favorite band, thanks to their unflinching dedication and musicianship. If you do not know them but like hard rock with attitude and yes--humor, buy this and just pres PLAY. :headbanger:

I write this review in anticipation of their upcoming album in hopes of helping to convince even more people to give this awesome but woefully overlooked band a chance.

Can a band be heavy, hard rockin', clever, thoughtful, bluesy, and even a bit funky all at once. Absolutely!
This is what Clutch has evolved into and I fully anticipate even more positive evolution to come. This is a band that could at one time certainly be classified as metal that began to recognize their strengths and gravitated towards a different sound without compromising their music at all.

Robot Hive / Exodus continues that evolution in several ways, first the keyboard sounds are much more integrated into this album than before, second the bass playing and drumming are allowed to be even funkier and third the blues infuences are even more prominent this time (the last two tracks are straight ahead blues).
None of this is to say that these guys don't still rock hard. There are plenty of hard rockin' numbers to be found on this disk.

This album like the previous Blast tyrant could be classified as a concept album in that there is pretty much a consistant lyrical theme through the album. This time it involves a robot society and the various happenings within it (which could be interpreted several ways). The lyrics are as usual for Clutch very clever and thoughtful and many tracks have themes couched in what could be classified as religious terms.

In the end this record like pretty much all Clutch albums just plain rocks. It invites you to shout and/or sing along as well as think a little bit.
Give Clutch a try, I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

Clutch Writes Rock album?.......2006-07-30

Robot Hive/Exodus has eclipsed everything Clutch have ever done in my opinion. I am a metal fan who has always though to myself "Rock is Dead". This album has made me rethink that-there is a colorful resurgence of rock music in the "hard" music genres right now.

Of all the other bands making Hard Rock music, C! are the kings right now.

Musical Evolution.......2006-06-04

I have been listening to Clutch since I first heard of them back in 1996. Bands like this are very big in the MidWest, and I have to tell you that this is one of my favorite. I think one of the things that have most impressed me about Clutch is that they have evolved thier music without changing thier musical identity. I have seen them go from hard core "Death Metal" (Impetus) to what I can only call "Funk Rock" (Elephant Riders). On this album in particular, they have a good mix of bad-@$$ riffs and funky bass lines. 100011 is probably one of the best examples of this. Most of the bands that I listen to have bad-@$$ riffs and just mediocre lyrics, but Clutch is the execption. Not only do they sound good, but thier lyrics are fresh and smart (see Blast Tyrant, Easy with that Mic). Anyways, if you don't already own all of Clutches albums (which you probably don't if you are reading this review), start out with either this album or the self titled album and then go from there. If you do own all of Clutches other albums, this one is a difinite "must have". I like this album a lot better than Elephant Riders and Blast Tyrant, but not as much as TNSL and Clutch. What A Badass Band. .......2006-02-28

Clutch jams, their heavy, and they have a killer front man. This was my 1st intro to Clutch. Every song on here is unlike any you've heard before; I don't think anyone sounds like Clutch. You want the kind of band that's funny as well as serious at the same time, able to deliver their songs with ultimate heaviness while still proving their musical abilities? There you have it. Get on this band now! For any fans of bands that you can party to as well as get into in a serious way. I can't name any other bands that are kind of like Cluch because I don't think anyone sounds like them. Easy 5 star rating here.

Was expecting better but was not bad. A bit more raw than much of their other stuff.

I'm not saying rock is dead........2005-12-31

I'm really not.

But how many CDs have come out in the last 10 years that can compete with, "Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes & Undeniable Truths?" How many CDs have this much voracity and groove?

Rock is a retired word. Bands like Audioslave are not rock, they are heavy lounge music. Bands like the White Stripes are not pioneers; they are recyclers with bursts of innovation. I'm not saying Audioslave and the White Stripes are bad, but neither band has a song that rocks like El Jefe Speaks. Or an album that opens up at 90 mils per hour with A Shogun Named Marcus.

There are so many good songs on this album. There are so many good songs on all of Clutch's albums. Clutch is one of those love or hate bands, more love than hate. This is one of Clutch's earlier albums, a little less groove, and a little more rock. I'm not saying that the band doesn't lay down the smooth bassline, and let the song unfold around it, because that certainly does happen (Binge And Purge). Clutch has a healthy amount of musical variety on this album, actually. The first 3 songs, sequentially, are perfect. If those 3 songs were on an EP I would be content.

The whole album is pretty groove-laden. It's just not the same groove that you will find on Robot Hives:Exodus or Blast Tyrant. That's not a bad thing though. Sure, Clutch has warped their sound a bit, but stylistically, they're a similar band today 10 years ago.

That said, "Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes & Undeniable Truths," is a wee-bit heavier than the bands later works. So, if you're expecting keyboards, or vocals that can groove like the bass, you might not want to look here. If you're looking to rock, no-BS, I promise you this album rocks. Sure, it's a tad bit on the heavy side, but it's less punk than COC and almost as groovey as Black Sabbath.

This is Clutch! .......2007-03-19

I own all of Clutch's albums. But this one is still my favorite.

It is the perfect mix of Rock Metal & grove. It's like what Monster Magnet did to Acid Rock.
This is high quality smoking grooves with a touch of the South. I have never grown tired of this one.
Every track is outstanding. And I think it is one of the better produced & focused efforts from the boys.

I discovered Clutch this past summer. I can't believe I missed out on the band for so long. Beast Tyrant is one of the best rock cds ever made. It grabs you from the start with Mercury, kicks into gear with Profits of Doom and Mob Goes Wild, and doesn't let up after that. There is not a weak song here. If you are looking at this, you are at least interested in Clutch. Buy this record. You will not be disappointed.

Great.......2006-07-18

Definitely my favorite Clutch CD. More cohesive and infectious than the rest of their albums. It just rocks from the word go and doesn't quit. Probably their most "rock" album. The lyrics are more straightforward and not as trippy as the rest of their albums. A lot of times on their other albums I just can't figure out what he is singing about. If you like their other albums you love this one.

Another amazing collection of songs by this great band. Unmatched at times, always great.
While playing Blast Tyrant, at times you wanna bang your head, then take out you dancing shoes, then close your eyes and absorb the moods streaming over you. Songs like Profits, Cypress Grove and Ghost are all 'pure rock fury', but still so diverse.
This is one cd I just can play over and over and over .... at any time or any mood I'm in. This is one of the very few bands that NEVER dissapoints.
Also, Clutch is by far the best live rock 'act' I have seen in my live.

This is a no brainer ..... BUY!!

I got Blast Tyrant out of the Library by accident. Uploaded it to my ipod and the first song I hear was Worm Drink. I have a lot of crap on my ipod, so I had to see what this was, and it was Clutch. I vaguely remembered them from the "drop that mic" song back in 2001. Damn, there is some good stuff on this album! I love it so much, I am here buying my own copy so I can give the library their copy back! I love it so much I checked out the only other Clutch album our library has (Robot Hive/Exodus) and came here to buy that too!

I forgot what good hard rock sounded like. Clutch is hard, but has a funny sense of humor too. Other favorite tracks are Profits of Doom, Cypress Grove, The Mob Goes Wild, Subtle Hustle, La Curandera, Ghost, and, oh never mind, they are all good! It's like nothing you have heard in a long time and it's awesome.

While this album may be a collection of rare tracks, it certainly throws its weight around with all the other works from Clutch. Clutch has been a band of progression and this album is a reflection of the type of raw, uncut and downright ruthless material they used to play. No harmonizing, just downright agression.

Granted, every song pretty much sounds the same when you think about it...but so what? This album is like one big long song that never lets up. The great thing about Clutch is that they've been able to combine great instrumentation with great vocals and great lyrics. They incorporate a new theme to their music on every album and it makes for a fun time when you're giving it a listen. Yes, this collection of tracks is a lot harder than what they're putting out nowadays, but I'll be damned if you're not banging your head to each track on the CD as you damn well should be.

This album is indeed a rare gem and should be without a doubt a part of your Clutch collection. If you're a fan of early Clutch, then you probably already have it. If you're a fan of today's Clutch with all their groove-laden melodies, you'll still enjoy this pick up.

Major Riffage.......2005-07-30

I've been a hardcore CLUTCH fan ever since I heard "Spacegrass".
Seems like every album they release is worthy. If you like major riffage, pick up some CLUTCH. This one rocks just as hard as the rest.

Old vs New.......2005-07-16

If this were a single containing just tracks 9-10 it would have gotten 5 stars....likewise if it only contained Pitchfork and the early demos. However, the new and old tracks have no business being on the same disc. IMO the new songs are superior to most of the songs on the new album, and could have easily replaced some of the instrumentals and covers that we got instead.

Tracks 5-8 are great examples that lend some insight into the evolution of the tracks on TSL. Most of them use lyrics that made their way into other songs on their debut album.

If anything, this release shows you how much Clutch's sound has changed (for good or bad depending on who you ask) since their first release.

It's definitely worth getting just for the new songs alone--and if you don't own the original Pitchfork it's a no-brainer

Long before they were making records that helped kick life back into the sorry state of rock during the Nu Metal/Garage Rock days, Clutch were a very aggressive metallic hardcore band who were regulars of Washington DC's Black Cat and 9:30 club. Similar in vein to New York bands like Helmet and Unsane, the Clutch of old beats out riveting hardcore riffage, rumbling bass, Gaster's suprisingly solid drum work, and Fallon's youthful but still strong vocals. Neil still injects doses of humor here, but he's far more pissed and enraged sounding in this cd than any releases prior. There are occasionally knods to the band's southern and classic rock roots as well. Even if you're not a Clutch fan but appreciate good early 90's music, check out Impetus

For the Hardcore Clutch fans only........2005-11-02

All 4 songs on this EP are great! You get "Impetus" twice but hey it's an awesome song so why not! There's 3 songs on this album that you can't get anywhere else unless you're willing to shell out the 30+ dollers to get the origional "Passive Restraints" And "Impetus" is not on that record. So that would be: "Pile Driver", "High Caliber Consecrator", and of course "Impetus". "Passive Restraints" you can get on "Pitchfork and Lost Needles". If you're a hardcore Clutch fan you're defenitely gonna want these 3 songs!
I've already stated my admiration for "Impetus", it's just a kick a$$ old school Clutch song. "Pile Driver" is very heavy and it is very raw sounding. Normally I'm not a big fan of that raw sound, but it works very well on this song. "High Caliber Consecrator", this song is a little over 7 min. long. It's cool because it has many differint breaks and rythem changes in it.
All in all this is very rare, very raw, and very classic Clutch. And it is a must for any Hardcore fan!

The Best of Metal.......2003-03-26

Buy it. Its awesome. If you are reading this review, you are obviously hardcore enough to be able to appreciate the fury and power, and smart enough to comprehend the shocking, intellectual, redneck-on-the-warpath lyrics. Forget new Clutch, get this and Transnational (and anything else put out before they lost their impetus).

CLUTCH ROCKS.......2001-06-25

Clutch is the quintessential hardcore band. NOBODY makes music like this anymore, at least nothing you would ever hear on the radio or, god forbid, MTV. Limp Bizkit, Korn, Godsmack, none of them can hold a candle to Clutch-- old Clutch at least, and this is as old as it gets for anyone who wasn't on the early 90's D.C. hardcore scene when they came out. Their newer stuff starts to thin out on the intensity, but this EP is as good as Clutch ever were. If you are extremely lucky, you will have an old fan around to dub the "Pitchfork" 7" demo which contains Clutch's first recordings. Anyway, BUY THIS CD. You will not regret. Great riffs, great lyrics, REAL LOUD, and a great insight into the hardcore roots of this great band. The last three songs are the older Earache EP "Passive Restraints," and the first two are from an Earache compilation disc from Europe called "Naive," including "Piledriver," possibly the greatest Clutch song ever. In the beginning ..........2001-03-23

If you like "nu-metal," well, a.) You need help, but also b.) All of those bands you like owe a debt of gratitude to Clutch. Along with Helmet and Quicksand, Clutch took hardcore music to a new plateau with its first 3 releases. This is a collection of music that would be considered #2; it's from 1992 but if it were released today it would likely go platinum. The riffs are hard, the bass is chunky, the vocals are barky and deep. It's a terrific representative of the purer side of hardcore music.

Soapmakers and crackerjack are highlights in the "my favorite songs of all time." They have a style that is indeed groovy and given the older footage on this enhanced disc has evolved. Beware! The lyrics are powerful voodoo.

Amazing Album.......2005-09-10

I don't understand the popular sentiment among Clutch fans that this album isn't up to par with the rest of their material. This is one of, if not their very best, album to date. For my money, Blast Tyrant is still their absolute best and one of the top rock albums ever made, but Elephant Riders is very close. Every song is outstanding and Clutch take some gambles here that really pay off. It is remarkable to see the transitions made in their first three releases, and the improvements they made to their sound in each. Elephant Riders, in my opinion, was the first Clutch album with cohesive song writing and really technical playing. With the Soapmakers, you have one of the greatest Clutch songs ever, featuring a totally different country rock feel, with a new style from Neil, and some outstanding riffs and lyrics. The brass accompaniment on the instrumental Crackerjack is really outstanding, while Clutch returns to some full on heavy metal with Dragonfly - hearkening back to their Transatlantic Speedway days but totally exceeding anything on that record.

I just don't understand why this album isn't seen as one of the greatest in Clutch's catalog because for my money it certainly deserves to be recognized as such.

Their ONLY bump in the road.......2005-06-04

I've been a very very big Clutch fan since picking up Speedway League on a whimb after seeing Shogun on Headbangers Ball in the early 90's. For me, this is the only Clutch album that is a letdown. I seem to be in the minority thinking this isn't a very good album, but it just isn't near as infectious as every other release they've put out thus far. I find the first 4 songs to be the only ones worth listening to time and again. I never would've guessed Clutch would've become what they have after seeing Shogun on the Ball years ago, but i'm glad they did. If you're just getting into Clutch, my advice is to get this release after getting all of their others first. My personal favorites are the self-titled and Speedway League, but you can't go wrong with Blast Tyrant or Pure Rock Fury either.

I am a clutch fan from the beginning and I must say when I first heard this album I was thuroughly disappointed. I had come to expect so much from them because of their first 2 records, in my eyes this one just didn't measure up. I liked the first 4 songs and that was about it. I didn't listen to this album for about 3 years and then I decided to givfe it another chance. The more I listened to it, the more I liked it. It is still not one of my favorite Clutch records, but it definetly is a very good album. Also it has one of the best Clutch songs ever written on it "The Soapmakers". Other standouts are; the title track and "Eight Times Over Miss October"

Not the best Clutch.......2005-05-28

First of all I am a huge Clutch fan from 92. They are my favorite band. They can do no wrong in my eyes. But this is my least favorite of their albums. Thi seems like more of a B side album than "Slow hole to china" Which is one of my all time favorie Clutch records. The title say's it all. I think this is Clutch just jaming and having fun. There are some really good songs here3 though like the opening track "Who Wants to Rock", "Big fat pig", and my favorite "Basket of Eggs". Make no mistake this is a good album and if you're a Clutch fan you will probably like it. It's just not one of my favorites. On the other hand this is my girlfriends favorite Clutch record, but she's a girl so what does she know.

A great Clutch album.......2005-02-01

First of all, this was released after "The Elephant Riders" after Clutch left columbia records due to low sales from the record labels lack of promoting the band. So Clutch released this originaly on River Road Records, which may have been their own label. I have yet to get the re-release but I will soon. But anyone who likes later Clutch from Elephant to Blast should like this. It is different and kind of strange at first but it is Clutch at their best just jamming and having fun. I agree with the other reviewers about track 2 being the best. I have been a fan since the first time I saw the video of A shogun Named Marcus on MTVs headbangers ball back in 1993. Bottom line is, yes this is a solid album, yes it is different, but listen to it a couple of times and I'm sure you will like it.

Get real this rocks!!!!!.......2005-01-28

This is in my opinion Clutch at their finest. Rerelease including three extra tracks. I would say that some of the above reviews need to be removed for inaccuracies. It was certainly not recorded in 1992 it was released independently between Elephant Riders and Pure Rock Fury. That's around 1999 and is nothing like what they played in the early 90's.
Second track is a true classic but the whole album is loose and grooves just the way I like it. Overall great album great vibe. Now great value with bonus tracks.

THIS IS A RE-RELEASE.......2005-01-22

It seems that the lack of a professional review has led to the confusion of many potential customers. This is not a new Clutch album that was released in 2004. It was recorded on the band's own funds and production skills in 1992 and then sold out of the back of their tour truck until they got a record deal in 1995. If listened to with this retrospective in mind, it is astonishing to hear the roots and direction of the even greater band that was yet to come. The sound quality may not be top-notch, but it only adds to the charm of this infectious and talented group. Hearing will make you feel, understand, and appreciate their more recent music better. A must for any long-time fan.

Huge disappointment.......2005-01-21

I have been a big clutch fan for years now and absolutely loved the "clutch" album. I also have been fond of the elephant riders and the recent blast tyrant albums. Any of these albums are good purchases. Did not enjoy Pure Rock Fury that much and absolutely hate this album. It seems to be a compilation of old songs that were too crappy to make there albums and were never fully developed or polished. Please don't waste money on this album. Shame on you Clutch.
