Birth of Dreams

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Steve Haun, international recording artist, keyboardist, composer, arranger, producer and top sports music creator - is one of the few artists who can stylistically move back and forth easily between soft new adult contemporary instrumental music and catchy uptempo contemporary jazz.

Haun has demonstrated this versatility on all of his best-selling albums - Inside the Sky (1988), Midnight Echoes (1989), Collage (1991), Victory (1992) and Birth of Dreams (scheduled for release April 1994). The first four albums, all released by Silver Wave Records, soared high on the national sales and airplay charts. The first two were Top 20 on Billboard's Top Adult Alternative chart and on the national New Adult Contemporary types of radio charts with Midnight Echoes top 10 for airplay, #6 in Radio & Records, listed as the second "hottest" album in the country and noted as having the "hottest" track. Birth of Dreams is on Ivory Moon Recordings and will be backed by a full, extensive marketing campaign.

According to Steve, the theme behind the new album is "hope for change and for a positive future." The recording is inspired by the National Children's Defense Fund created by President Clinton who will be asked to endorse the song "If We Could See Through Each Other's Eyes" and to name it the offical theme song for the campaign. The song was written by Steve Haun and Karen Karsh, arranged by Steve Haun with vocals by a children's choir. An outgrowth of the National Children's Defense Fund is the state-by-state campaign called Leave No Child Behind whose mission is to insure that "each child must have the opportunity to grow up safe, nurtured, housed and fed." To show his support for this mission, Steve wrote a piece called "Leave No Child Behind." Other positive compositions of love and hope on the album include "Unspoken Love," "Where Angels Dance," "Welcome to the World" and "A Place Inside."

"The album has both slow and uptempo songs," says Haun. "It also reflects my love for a combination of instrumental sounds, especially acoustic piano, acoustic and electric guitars, strings, flute, french horns and saxophones. Some of the instruments are played by other musicians like saxophonist Nelson Rangell, guitarist Chris Daniels and bass player and guitarist Kip Kuepper. Some of the sounds I create on synthesizers but no matter what arrangement I come up with, I always put the most emphasis on the melody. That's what makes for a memorable composition."

Some of the music on the album was originally conceived as the score for features about athletes and sporting events. Haun's incredible success as one of the top sports music composers and musicians in the world had its start in his hometown, Boulder, Colorado. A Denver television station did a feature on him and soon local TV news coverage was using his music with their stories. His music also was used on local and then national commercials. Soon his music was being used for the Coors Classic Bicycle Race, the International Golf Tournament and is used exclusively for local and national television and radio coverage of the Bolder Boulder, one of the largest 10K running races in the country. In 1992, he was asked to write the official theme song for that race and the music became the basis of his Victory album.

In the past two years, Steve's music has been used on television for NBC's "Sportsworld", college football and The National Football League (including the Heisman Trophy Ceremony and the NFL playoffs), The National Basketball Association (including the All Star Game, the playoffs and the NBA Finals), the Tour of America Cycling Series on ESPN, tennis (U.S. Open Tennis Championships, The French Open, Wimbledon Tennis Championships, RCA Hardcourt Tennis Championships and The Mazda Tennis Classic), World Figure Skating Championships, Pro Beach Volleyball, Michael Jordan Celebrity Golf, The Ryder Cup, The 1992 Summer Olympics and 1994 Winter Olympics. This music includes many of the compositions found on his albums as well as much music he is hired to create specifically for certain events. For example, he wrote the theme songs for two weekly TV sports shows about the Philadelphia Eagles.

Producers of these sports broadcasts and shows rave about Steve's ability to capture the feeling of the various sports - the excitement, momentum, pacing, power, the thrill of winning and the pain of losing. Haun credits his competence to his love for the two things that interested him most when he was growing up - music and sports, of course.

Steve, who was born in Denver, came from a musical family where music was constantly heard around his home. He began taking violin and piano lessons when he was five. Only a year later he won first place in a composition contest sponsored by the Music College of the University of Kansas. When he was seven, his family moved to Boulder where he continued to win music awards including citations from the Colorado State Music Teacher's Association and the Boulder Philharmonic Young Artist's Competition.

During high school Steve was concertmaster of the orchestra, but was also heavily involved in sports, especially basketball and tennis. He auditioned and won a music scholarship to the University of Colorado at Boulder. He played violin through college which he says "helps me when I do orchestrations and string arrangements." He earned his BA Degree and then continued his studies at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley where he earned his Masters in theory and composition.

"I grew up studying classical music, but listening to just about everything, especially pop. But I always liked film scores too and sometimes I would sit through a movie several time just to enjoy the music. Dave Grusin is one of my biggest influences. I first became aware of his music from film scores like 'On Golden Pond' which is an extraordinary piece of work. Later I got into his jazz and eventually I began to like contemporary jazz like the Rippingtons and David Sanborn. My biggest influence is David Foster who is involved in so many musical projects it's unbelievable. His production, arranging and composing are so unique and unmatched. His film scores and compositions are what inspired me most to write my own music. My ultimate goal is to get the chance to score films someday."

5 out of 5 stars If stranded on an island and had one disc..........2006-01-23

I'd be tempted to make this the one, and I own over 2,000. I agree with what has been said above, but have a few thoughts of my own. I live near a major city with a known orchestra. Why are classical audienced declining? Maybe they're overplaying hackneyed works, and not playing some neglected masterpieces. In this double album there are some well known works, but some exquisite finds, like Picker's Old and Lost Rivers, Honegger's Pastorale, Arvo Part's Summa (!!!). Most highly recommended, with a good bottle of red wine.

5 out of 5 stars Truly inspired collection.......2004-12-07

I came upon this compilation while researching a somewhat obscure piece called "Summer Pastorale", which is contained in the collection. One look at the play list and I was sold - here were most of my favorite tone poems, adagios, and assorted short works, all on one CD (OK, two CD's...)

Another gem here that I had never heard before is Pick's "Old and Lost Rivers". Ravel's final movement from Mother Goose is one of his best orchestrations and at the top of my 'A' list.

About the only pieces I missed here were Debussy's Engulfed Cathedral and Respighi's fourth church window, St. Gregory the Great. Perhaps they would be a bit too dramatic for this collection, though.

The only shortcoming of this collection is the lack of liner notes, but this is a minor issue. The music is superb.

5 out of 5 stars Encore! Encore!.......2004-06-17

Like a few other reviewers here, I purchased this disc for Tobias Picker's "Old and Lost Rivers." But from the Gregorian chants that open this two-CD set to the closing strains of Ravel's "Mother Goose: The Fairy Garden," I was absolutely captivated by the beauty and cohesiveness of this compilation. Producer Robert Laporta has created a disc that passes muster with neophytes and long time classical music lovers alike. I humbly suggest -- make that BEG -- that Virgin Classics turn "Classical Dreams" into a series. I would love to hear a second volume featuring such favorites as the BBC Symphony Orchestra's interpretation of Delius' "On Hearing the 1st Cuckoo In Spring," the Royal Philharmonic's version of Vaughan Williams' "Fantastia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" and the London Symphony's recording of Vaughan Williams' "Symphony No. 3 Pastoral" (Andre Previn conducting both Vaughan Williams' selections). By far, this is the finest classical collection I have yet heard. Encore!

Like a few other reviewers here, I purchased this disc for Tobias Picker's miraculous (and criminally underrated) "Old and Lost Rivers." But from the Gregorian chants that open this two-CD set to the closing strains of Ravel's "Mother Goose: The Fairy Garden," I was absolutely captivated by the beauty and cohesiveness of this compilation. Producer Robert Laporta has created a disc both neophytes and long time classical music lovers can approve of. I humbly suggest that Virgin Classics turn Classical Dreams into a series. 5 out of 5 stars Surprised and ... inspired.......2002-05-10

What a pleasant surprise this double CD turned out to be. I bought it used just for Picker's gorgeous and poetic "Old and Lost Rivers" but fell in love with the whole thing. I'm not usully one for "Best Of ---" or themed classical collections, but this one's in a class by itself. The selections are unusual and achingly lovely in themselves and as a whole. This is my new favorite disk. It's a relaxation or concentration tool... hell, it's a companion - it goes wherever my laptop and headphones go. You get over two hours of gorgeous and lyrical - never mushy, sentimental or tired - classical music, the perfect backdrop for everything from dinner dates to writing code. This CD has added sustained moments of beauty and poise to a busy life - which is more than I could have asked for!
