Customer Reviews:
Wonderful surprise.......2007-08-01
We nearly always avoid non-operatic material being performed by opera singers because they seldom keep their "instruments" from dominating the material. I beg Placido's forgiveness for avoiding him for so long. His absolutely marvelous, musical performances here found me weeping from the sheer beauty of his voice and his understanding of the beautiful songs chosen for this album.
love songs easy to listen too.......2007-05-07
I love a classical voice singing this type of mustic, or sacred (from the operas (in English), or, out of print sacred. Wish I could find a source for some of my old tapes (some recorded from 78s) of artists like Jerome Hines (Holy City, 1962-3, 78 record I transferred to tape), Russel Davis (1970 or early 8os record I coped, of tape my Dad had copied), William Harness, Kathleen Battle, etc. etc. I enjoy a wide range of music, but had operatic training, so understand the requirements for superior vocal skill. John Denver had much of the quality. Music for me is part of the fabric of life.
This is an oldie but a goodie!.......2006-11-09
One of his first albums of "popular" songs and one of the best of the songs we have loved for years with a fresh, new Domingo treatment. Just as his album with John Denver was a something new for him, these songs are out of the opera world. You'll never hear any of them performed by anyone up to the "gold standard" of Domingo. That being said, I love this album, but - the accent gets in the way on the English songs. You have to be able to accept the accented English and just listen to the gorgeous voice singing some very romantic songs. I highly recommend!
Great for boring candlelight dinner or quick ride in an elevator........2006-10-31
As much as I enjoy listening to Placido Domingo's popular recordings this is not one of his best performances. Missing the full-blooded belting that can be heard on his other albums ("Be My Love" for example). The orchestration is very mediocre and uninspired.
For a romantic mood, "Perhaps Love" (simply fabulous) is much better choice.
Beautiful music.......2006-02-23
I have been looking for this title for a long time...in all the wrong places.

Another (Audiophile) Gem.......2006-09-10
OK so I have a thing for well-recorded, enjoyable female jazz vocal. This recording has both attributes. If you're into Jane Monheit, Kendra Shank, Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, etc. "Autumn Leaves" will not disappoint. This is good jazz singing. Jacintha's voice is not seasoned with age but she's well on her way. This is an analog recording and it's proof positive that there's nothing lacking in analog whatsoever.
Remarkably sensual vocalization.......2004-07-19
Inver knew Jacintha was Singapore born and raised. It is unusaly for an oriental singer to attempt jazz cocals and do it so well. Her voice is subtle and sensual. The backup is a bit weak in this album.
Damn .. near crashed my truck.........2003-02-08
Stunning. Simply stunning. NPR ran the last track (11),late one nite. I was on the way home from a long business trip.. the tune was so captivating.. I had to pull over to the side of the road to finish and catch the title. Took 2 weeks of frantic searching on the NET to find the disk and get it in my hand. Highly Treasured disk. SAD news, In coorespondance with the producer, All of her earlier master recordings were destroyed in a fire at the studio in Singapore. Get it while you can.
Beautiful Voice.......2002-04-17
I purchased this CD after hearing the song "Here's to Life" in the PLay to the Bone movie with Antonio Banderas and Woody Harrelson. I couldn't get the song out of my head and had to find out who the singer was. I received the CD and listen to it all the time. I love every song on the CD. It never fails to move me emotionally. The intro of her rendition of "Moon River" and the pianist instrumental solo are excellent. I listen to the CD in my car and everytime someone hears it they are as blown away as I am.
Simply Beautiful.......2001-10-04
Recently, I purchased both of Jacintha's releases based on reviews here and by listening to the sound samples.
I am an avid audiophile and am greatly enjoying the recent crop of well-recorded releases featuring female vocalists. I have been a big fan of Diana Krall for the last year and a half, and I also own CDs of such vocalists as Jane Monheit, Kitty Margolis, Kendra Shank, Stacey Kent, Patricia Barber, Sunny Sumter, Monica Worth, and Datevik.
First I will state that I know nothing of the art or technicality of singing. And even though I spend lots of money on my stereo system, I greatly appreciate music just for music's sake. Of the names mentioned above only Diana Krall moves me emotionally. For me the rest are just artistic stylizations, voices that make no connection with me. With the exception of Diana Krall and Sunny Sumter I think I have only listened to the other women's CDs a couple times.
Jacintha is something special. When she sings, just like Diana you feel she is pouring out her heart for you only. On the Autumn Leaves CD it lists the track "Here's to Life" as being a bonus track. I am totally in love with this rendition. Kei Akagi's piano accompaniment is beautiful as it floats along elegantly framing the emotion of Jacintha's voice.
Obviously, my opinions regarding all the female vocalists I've mentioned are just that. My own. If you love the female voice as much as I, definitely listen to all you can. And by no means am I enchanted by every cut on every CD by Diana Krall or Jacintha. For me their personally emotional interpretation of old standards is what distinguishes them from what some music critics may label as the "glamour-before-talent-crowd".
It just amazes me that someone born, raised and musically educated in Singapore can sound this way. I suppose it really doesn't matter where one lives. A person can be moved by music no matter where it originates.

Composer Tim Janis has long straddled the line between contemporary instrumental and classical music. With An American Composer in Concert, he further blurs that line. The first nine tracks of this disc were recorded by the Tim Janis Ensemble in the composer's studio. They're short, majestic, and relaxing instrumentals named after nature themes ("Cape Elizabeth," "The Fallen Leaves of Autumn," "Pacific Wind"). Things pick up slightly during the 10 live tracks that make up the second half of this disc. Recorded at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with the American Symphony Orchestra, these tracks feature luxuriant strings, the occasional pennywhistle solo, and one vocal track (a take on "Amazing Grace" with sweeping orchestrations). As with most Janis efforts, there's nothing groundbreaking here, just soothing music and pleasant melodies. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
December Morning.......2004-10-17
It is just so soothing. I've had the opporturnity to see him in person (sort of) on QVC shopping channel. I can just see his face as he places along with the rest of the group. He looks so peaceful and serene. And that is how I feel listening to his music.
Splendid Live Performance from Modern Composer Tim Janis.......2003-04-24
Tim Janis's latest CD is split into two sections; the first 9 tracks feature new works, and the latter 10 tracks are taken from his live performance at the Lincoln Centre (USA) earlier in 2001.
The new tracks are a little repetitive in sound, but there is some quality music within them. Where the CD really takes off, however, is in the live section, which features renditions of his favourite pieces ably supported by the American Symphony Orchestra. Stand-out tracks include "Twin Lights", "Water's Edge" and my favourite of all, "Amazing Grace", featuring the powerful voice of Gwendolyn Leathers supported by some fabulous orchestration.
"White Mountain" deserves a mention of its own for its sheer excellence and beauty. Stunning penny-whistle playing!
These live tracks are taken from Janis's previous releases, including the excellent "Water's Edge" and the now unavailable "Flowers in October".
At over 70 minutes in length, you get a lot of music for your money.
If you enjoy melodic, soothing instrumental music played by a symphony orchestra, this CD may well be the one for you.
Highly recommended.
Very good but not excellent.......2002-11-22
When I first heard Tim Janis on our local PBS station, I was memerized by his music so I had to get the CD. I'm glad I did but I have to admit when a friend pointed out that all his songs pretty much sounded the same, I had to agree. Maybe as he gets older there will be some more variety, I hope so. He's a very talented young man.
An outstanding CD that leaves you wanting more.......2002-03-15
"An American Composer in Concert" is another outstanding CD from Tim Janis. The lush mixture of ensemble and orchestral songs truly transport you to a better place emotionally and mentally. Tim Janis composes the music I've been waiting my whole life to hear, though I didn't know it until I heard it. I'm much more at peace with nature and myself after listening to his music. On this CD, "Blue Hill Bay" is probably my favorite of all Tim Janis' songs, but all the songs on this CD (with the possible exception of a vocal rendition of "Amazing Grace" that doesn't seem to belong) are great. If you haven't heard Tim Janis' music, you owe it to yourself to get this one and listen to it. Since I've found his music grows on people, I guarantee if you listen to your CD 5 times, you'll be hooked like I am and explore his other CD's as well. Enjoy!!
Incredible music from an incredible evening..........2001-11-23
I LOVE the music of Tim Janis and this CD is a truly wonderful CD. This CD has georgeous live tracks and extra bonus tracks to make it completely full of breathtaking melodies...I would truly recommend it to anyone who wants to have some beautiful music around the house!

Great But..........2005-10-22
I really like the tracks on this album.. uh.. until about 1 or 2 minutes into each peice. The drummer could not be more in the way, more annoying, rambunctious, out of balance and out of place after a minute or two into almost every track. There are only a couple of tracks where this isn't the case. Granted, a drum solo is fine from time to time, but this is rediculus. Wanting some nice music to relax or have playing in the background while company is over, this album does NOT work. Ok, so maybe thats not it's purpose, but still, no thanks. Maybe it looked cooler in person with arms flailing faster than the eye can perceive.
How good is this?.......2004-01-20
About as good as you can get.
Great Jazz Trio, indeed. For once the hype is true.
It's been a marvelous past twelve months for old jazz guys--stunning releases from Ahmad Jamal (In Search of Momentum), Abdullah Ibrahim (African Magic), Roy Haynes (Love Letters). And now, perhaps the best of all, The Great Jazz Trio's Autumn Leaves.
What I love about this disc is how effortless great playing and musicianship become in the hands of the absolute masters--and how listenable. This is a disc you could feel equally good about as an introduction for your skeptical friends to acoustic improvised music, or merely as a vehicle for basking in sonic glories.
Perhaps most noticibly, Elvin Jones (drums) shows why he's undoubtedly THE standout drummer of his generation: he simply gets more out of his kit than anyone else. Proof? His mind-boggling playing on "Caravan," initially, with the restless, throbbing vibe he creates, then with the incredible solo he casually rips off. But he consistently dazzles. Brother Hank on piano's no slouch either. With a deftness approaching magical proportions, taste out the wazoo, deep swing, and a profoundly grounded blooziness, he shows why Detroit (Tommy Flanigan, Kirk Lightsey) is the jazz piano capital of the world.
The ringer is Richard Davis. Not one of the Jones brothers, not as well known (perhaps) as either of them, he nevertheless seems the absolutely perfect choice for the bass chair. He takes center stage on "Bye Bye Blackbird" and doesn't disappoint. He's got that great woody tone fully on display here as he effortlessly spins off some slick opening lines and exits with a stunning arco outro.
Standards have seldom sounded this good, and these Old Masters raise the bar impossibly high for their young counterparts.

Customer Reviews:
A GREAT LIGHT CLASSIC CD.......2006-05-01
I love this CD, Richard Hayman musical arrangements are excellent and contribute to emphasize all the beautiful melodies with creative and graceful details performed by a fine orchestra. Track "World of Legrand" is my favourite. 5 stars no doubt.
Nice Music.......2003-12-24
This collection features lovely selections of French music. This music is not upbeat, but reflects the romantiscism and beaty of France. If your looking for light orchestral music that is not entirely classical, I would reccomend this CD. Au revoir, et La Vie an Rose!
