Drake Bell would like to take some time and tell you what he really wants to say, or at least that's what he sings on "Rusted Silhouette," one of the thoroughly charming pop tunes he glides through on this, his major-label debut. What he put thought into saying on It's Only Time isn't exactly earth-shattering--the teen-targeted, relationship stuff he's spouting has been set forth a million different ways before. But there's something in Bell's punched-up delivery and the sunniness of his Beatles-inspired music that compels the helpless listener--even if she's not 11, even if she's never heard of his Nickelodeon TV show Drake & Josh--to keep humming along. That something is charisma. Not only does Bell have excellent hair, as throngs of swollen-hearted admirers have observed on fan sites, he also has a regular-dude persona he's skilled at channeling with just his voice. He's the guy every guy wants, or wanted, to be in high school: cool, chummy, a babe magnet. Former geeks and goths may take issue, but expect an eventual conversion. New and Refreshing.......2007-07-25

I'm 21 years old, and while I do still watch Disney and Nickelodeon I never really liked Drake and Josh. However, when I heard his track "I know", it was love! The CD is new, and such a different sound then what you normally hear from the people coming from Disney and Nickelodeon- some of the songs are not completely appropriate for his younger viewers, but I definitely suggest it =)

I love this guy named Drake Bell who is a famous singer celebrity person! Ever since I went to one of Drake Bell's concerts at the Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga. I actually got his autograph and even talked to him it was actually like I was in heaven! The main reason why I am telling you about this C.D. is because I am trying encourage you to by this it because of Drake's amazing voice and personality. On this C.D. it includes eleven tracks and they are all the best songs in the whole entire world in my opinion of course. The first track is UP PERISCOPE time 3:15,#2 I KNOW time 3:46, #3 DO WHAT YOU WHAT time 3:26, #4 IT'S ONLY TIME time 4:00 #5 FOUND A WAY (acoustic guitar) time 3:03, #6 MAKES ME HAPPY time 2:08, #7 FOOL THE WORLD time 4:43, #8 FALLEN FOR YOU time 3:17, #9 RUSTED SILHOUETTE time 3:09, BREAK ME DOWN time 2:07, #11 End IT GOOD time 1:46. Plus a bonus DVD of his personal guitar lessons and as well as his own actual life style. Also, on his C.D. is drake bell actually on set filming a music video how cool is that! My opinion on this C.D. is that the songs are very well written and very sung by the one and the only drake bell. Great CD, not for young ears however!.......2007-05-23

I bought this CD for my daughter's (who are 6 and 4) because they really enjoy the Drake & Josh show and hoped they could enjoy Drake's music as well. Heck, I'm 28 and I even watch the show! But, I do have to admit that I was a bit shocked at the sexually charged lyrics of "Up Periscope". I know that Drake is not attached to Josh's hip in the real world even though they are so often packaged as a pair. He's a young man now who is entitled to his private, adult life. He surely doesn't live in the world of Nickelodeon 24-7 and no one should expect him to remain the innocent little boy we knew from the Amanda show. However, Drake DOES have a show on Nickelodeon which draws a huge fan base of young viewers. Singing about ripping off his partners' clothing and having sex multiple times isn't my idea of music suited for small ears. I was so impressed when Josh Peck attributed part of his amazing weight loss to wanting a be a healthy role model for his young fans. I sincerely thought this CD would be cute bubblegum pop that the 14 and under set could enjoy, but I now know that is not so. My kids can listen to "Found A Way" and Mommy can enjoy the other tunes in private :) He is a very talented singer and musician who will hopefully come out with more albums in the future. Just go easy on the naughty lyrics, would ya Drake?? Little kiddos are listening whether you care or not! I guess The Naked Brother's Band is more our speed at the moment.

Knowing what I was getting before I purchased it only makes this product more endearing to me. I love the praise and worship and the ability to put it on my computer at work, in my car and at home. Listening to this easily puts my mind before God's presence so that I may commune with Him. Further, I saw this on a TV add to be purchased from Time Life. It was a few dollars less on Amazon.

This is a great cd. I have to say, I love all of the songs on it. They are wonderful songs to walk (exercise) with; sometimes I find myself dancing.

I love this album. It's great to have on in the background while you're pottering around the house 'cause it's 'easy-listening'. Of course, when it comes to my favourite Mercy Me song I blare the sound!

I was very disapointed with the sound and the voices singing on this cd. I ordered it because I heard the song I Can Only Imagine and it was wonderful, however thie singing on this cd seems to be out of tone, sounds like amatures singing and I hate it. I do not like the entire cd. how sad as I spent good money thinking I was getting a quility of good singers.

Almost an accidental ensemble, Booker T. & the MGs came together for a functional reason--to play as the house band for Memphis's Stax Records. But organist Booker T. Jones and guitarist Steve Cropper found alchemy, transforming rhythm-section riffing into an art, slicing through air where listeners expected vocals and doing so with tremendous success on their first single, "Green Onions," which was later featured on the American Graffiti soundtrack. This three-CD set captures the quartet's core in plentiful doses, leading off with their 1961 first salvo and cruising through numerous attempts at remaking the soulful classic. But in tinkering with the "Green Onions" formula, the band found dozens of instrumental variations, much like later, all-instrumental genre straddlers like Medeski Martin & Wood. They also found countless hours of work, backing some of Memphis soul's most revered artists (think Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett) and defining a backbone sound of organ and guitar layered over the increasingly vital rhythms of bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and original drummer Al Jackson. They played expansive minor-key soul, as "Ode to Billie Joe" and many other tunes here attest, and later in the 1960s went on to churn out charting hits and great albums alike. The second CD in this set captures some great moments, especially the segments from McLemore Avenue, the quartet's all-instrumental tune-for-tune riposte to Abbey Road. Later in the set you get Albert King on vocals for a gritty "Born Under a Bad Sign" and then Boz Scaggs and Neil Young fronting the quartet (with Steve Potts or Jim Keltner drumming in place of the long-ago murdered Jackson). ONE ***H-U-G-E*** FLAW!!!.......2004-08-16

If you're a serious Booker T & the MGs fan you'll probably want to get this set BUT, because of ONE HUGE FLAW, it stands FAR from being definitive; THE TITLE TRACK IS THE WRONG TAKE!!! I cannot imagine how this could have happened. (And I can scarcely believe that I don't see this glaring flaw mentioned in any of the other reviews!) The bass line ---arguably the most definitive element of the song--- is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT, which makes it interesting from an oddities/rarities perspective, but... "Time Is Tight" is one of my favorite cuts from this band and one of the main reasons I bought this set. I'm a professional bassist and it's one of the first songs I learned to play, one of the songs that played a significant role in my most formative years; I know it intimately. What a HUGE let-down it was when I discovered that the famous version of the song was not included and, after dropping fifty bucks, I still had to go out and buy "The Very Best Of..." to scratch the itch! And, while I'm a it... I have a compilation from the late '60s that has many cuts missing from this set. I'd much prefer to have some of those, rather than the 'live stuff. So, in summary; Hard-core fans only... Those willing to buy additional CDs to fill out the collection.

Outstanding!.......2002-08-05

I had the Greatest Hits and Melting Pot albums way back when vinyl was king, and I decided to revisit the past and putchase this set as well as Melting Pot (the downloaded mp3's were just enough to get me hooked again). I wasn't disappointed. It's great from beginning to end, and the live version of Hang em High is fantastic. My only complaint is that the studio version of Time is Tight isn't the same one as on my old LP. No matter, it's all good. The book that comes with it is great for Booker T fanatics, packed with lots of history. A little pricey, but worth it

Timeless.......2002-04-01

The greatest drummer who ever lived, Al Jackson, Jr., the coolest, most persuasive bass player in the world, Donald "Duck" Dunn, the absolute superior guitar playing of the one and only Steve Cropper, and the special genius of organ/piano man and all round musical prodigy, Booker T. Jones made up a virtual "dream team" of music. Besides laying down perfectly tight, unbelievably soulful backdrops for some of the greatest artists of the 20th century, they recorded some of the best music ever made and in instrumental form to boot. This is a great box set. You get the hits from "Green Onions" to "Hip Hug-Her" to "Hang 'Em High" to the amazing "Melting Pot". You get great rarities like "Hole In the Wall" (originally released in '65 under the moniker The Packers), and the beautiful, superb "Meditation" (a Booker T. Jones masterpiece, as brilliant as anything ever done from Mozart to McCartney). And you hear the band's versatility on their remarkable range of covers. I wouldn't do much editing; however, I would replace a good bit of the pre-Dunn era material, except a few, like the great "Soul Dressing", with later outings. And one could argue that the entire Melting Pot album, along with the entire McLemore Avenue album merit greatest hits status. Also, soul fans will no doubt cringe at the sound of Neil Young whining his way through the Cropper penned "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". Why this was picked to finish the collection, still baffles me. All and all, though, a fine showcase for the greatest band of all time.

The best from the Best.......2001-07-31

I have grown up listening to Booker T and the MG's. My brother brought back a huge stereo from Thailand in the 60's (Vietnam War) with a collection of awesome soul records including Booker T. The sound from that stereo and the soul music pumping out of those speakers were about as close to heaven as a 6 year old could get. In 1967 I became a gigantic Booker T and the MG's fan and have been ever since. I own all the originals on LP's and have since collected them all on CD's. I thought I had heard it all available from them but this box collection proved I hadn't. It spans many years and has B-Sides from 45's which I don't have and live cuts as well. The box set is the best start or compliment to your existing great Booker T and or Stax/Memphis Soul collection.

Instrumental fans enjoy.......2001-02-18

I would actually give this set 4.5 stars. I have been waiting for a comprehensive collection from this band for a long time. The only reason I am not giving it five stars is the live cuts at the end of disc 3 with the exception of the Albert King numbers, are unnecessary. Especially since studio versions of some of these songs are already on the set. These songs are from the period after the band reformed WITHOUT Al Jackson, Jr. on drums. If live versions were selected they could have been chosen from the classic period. Rob Bowman and Bill Belmont would have been better served to add more studio rarites, either non-lp sides or unissued tracks. Ace currently has an excellent import cd entitled "Play The Hip Hits" which includes unissued and rare cover versions from their classic period only one of which "Fannie Mae" appears on this set. The liner notes inside that cd state that there are also unissued cuts written by the band still in the vaults. This being said "Time Is Tight" is an great box set. I have many box sets and I play this one more than most. I like the fact that the first disc concentrates on the period when the band was distributed by Atlantic. The second disc starts after this distribution deal had ended. The discs themselves contain most of their "hits" along with familiar covers and cool album tracks. However "Booker-Loo" & "Red Beans & Rice" were omitted from the "Greatest Hits" cd. These discs illustrate what a tight band that the MGs were. Steve Cropper is an excellent but underrated guitarist. Al Jackson Jr. is a steady and funky drummer. Donald "Duck" Dunn is an inventive bass player while Booker T. Jones is equally adept at organ or piano. It is easy to see why these musicians were/are in such demand to back their more famous contemporaries. In summary if you are a fan of instrumental music or funk/soul this is an essential purchase. It is also great music to play in the car while cruising.

It would seem impossible to summarize James Brown's contribution to R&B--to American music--in a mere four compact discs, but somehow Star Time does it. This boxed set charts Brown's early rise as a hard-hitting R&B-styled vocalist ("Please Please Please," "Try Me") and shows how his bandleading skills (one can't forget inventive players like saxophonist Maceo Parker, bassist Bootsy Collins, drummer Jabo Starks, and many others) changed the face of soul and invented funk in the '60s and early '70s with impeccably timed ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"), highly rhythmic ("I Can't Stand It"), primal ("Licking Stick Licking Stick") hits. The box also does a definitive programming job on Brown's more spotty later years--another plus. This is where beginners should start, but several extended versions and rarities (like "Papa," raised an octave on original release, at normal speed) make it a must for completists too. --Don Harrison

This is as close to a complete retrospective of James Brown's legendary recording career from 1956-1984 that will ever be available. The 71 tracks are from original session tapes or the original single and album masters. The sound quality - in particular on the oldest material - is outstanding.

The collection starts with Please, Please, Please (1956) and ends with Unity (Part I), which features Afrika Bambaata on co-vocals.

Some of my favorites are Try Me, Night Train, Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (Parts I, II & III), Bring It Up (Hipster's Avenue), Say It Loud - I'm Black And I'm Proud (Part I), Funky Drummer, Make It Funky (Part I), King Heroin and My Thang.

Along with bassist Bootsy Collins, Brown has worked with many dynamite musicians, led by long-time organist, Bobby Byrd. The saxophonists include Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis, Michael Brecker & Joe Farrell, with such trombonists as Randy Brecker, Fred Wesley & Jon Faddis bolstering Brown's signature Funk and R&B sounds.

You can count on one hand the true pathfinders in American popular music. There are three individuals who must be on every list; Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and The Godfather of Soul.

James Brown has always been my favorite, but I was never able to find much of his music in the CD era before the internet exploded. Unfortunately, it took his death to remind me of how much I liked his sound. I've been on a buying spree since. Usually, after you get through the best 5-10 hits an artist has on one greatest hit collection, the rest is hum drum filler. I have to say that in the case of James Brown, the more I find the more I love the man!!! He is truly the progenitor of Funk and hip hop.

Very rarely has the passing of a public figure made me feel such deep emotions as I felt this Christmas day when we lost James Brown. Although I was fortunate enough to see him live and in concert before, I was looking forward to seeing him again on December 28th at a NJ venue and had been lucky enough to get second row seats, but it was not to be. I can literally separate my music listening life into two distinct periods: BEFORE and AFTER I heard JB. Once I heard him everything changed, and I couldn't look at music the same again after hearing him. What I thought was funky or groundbreaking before seemed tepid and uninspired after I heard him. I distinctly remember hearing "Sex Machine" at a party one night and the proverbial light went off. Since that time I have purchased all the JB I can get my hands on, including this collection. The music and message of JB has become ingrained in who I am over the years and has shaped so much of my appreciation for music. JB fused elements of soul, R&B and jazz to lay the foundations of what would later be known as funk music, and then managed to create what would become (in my opinion) the most memorable and definitive funk music ever recorded. But the man didn't just make good time party music; he always had something to say, whether it be unabashed pronouncements of black pride or urging kids to stay in school or away from drugs. JB's influence was so far reaching it almost seems incomprehensible; VERY few recording artists have managed to sustain careers that spanned several decades and remained relevant. His influence was felt on other continents as evidenced in Fela Kuti's music in Nigeria and the creation of Afrobeat, which Fela himself confessed was directly influenced by the rhythms present on James Brown's recordings. JB even had a hand in the early rap scene when artists like Public Enemy began sampling his music on their tracks in the mid 1980's. (And lets not forget that JB was one of the first to rap back in the early 1970's, check out "King Heroin" on this collection if you need a refresher.) The music contained on these four discs is a well chosen overview of his incredible career. As a general warning though, this probably won't be the end of your James Brown collection. I have found that his music is so infectious that I have kept buying more and more of it over the years. However, any newcomer to his music will find this collection to be an excellent place to start, and really any and every music fan should own this. I've said it before and I'll say it again: you ain't human if this doesn't move you. This past summer I was in the heart of the inner city waiting outside of a fast food restaurant in the take out line with my windows down, and blasting a live version of the JB's tearing through "Pass The Peas". I slowly turned as I saw some movement out of the corner of my eye, as three men who had been asking for change got up and began to dance. They yelled "GODFATHAAA!", and ended up coming to my window to ask what CD the song was from or if it was the radio. I'm sure everyone who has been touched by his music has a story like this, because the music of James Brown was something that brought us all together as people. of one of the latter 20th Century's greatest musical innovators!
James Brown was a revolutionary of music, of performance,
and with his bold "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing /
Say It Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud" socio-political statements
that came to black america at a time when they were really needed!

This box set is the most comprehensive collection of his
groundbreaking work that I know of!
I've owned this set now for about 14 yrs. and have
played it a billion times probably by now!
Yet it's still fresh, funky, energetic and positive!!--
And yes, it speaks of truth!!
This man was so far ahead of his time, yet OF HIS TIME!
In these last few days since his passing,
his music means even more to me!
He was given a funeral befitting royalty because he WAS ROYALTY!!
God Bless Your Soul Mr. Brown!! (May 3, 1933 - December 25, 2006)

A wonderful gift, this handsomely packaged four-CD box set (purple velvet cover, gold-foil lettering) also serves as an inviting midcareer retrospective of an uncommon vocalist-sonic architect. Only Time: The Collection is a mix-and-match assortment of tracks spanning Enya's first five U.S. releases (including her 1987 debut, The Celts) and embellished with a half-dozen B-sides not found on her previous U.S.-released albums. Chief among them are "May It Be" (from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack); "Isobella," a hushed, slowly evolving beauty formerly available only in Japan; and "Oiche Chiun (Silent Night)." The set's fourth disc is an enhanced CD that includes 1996 video footage of Enya performing "Oiche Chiun" during a BBC special. Also included is a 44-page, tall-format booklet filled with regal artist photos, song lyrics, and commentary on each track written by lyricist Roma Ryan. Some notations are throwaway items. Others are insightful, such as the unfinished lyrics (about lost love) for the instrumental title track to A Day Without Rain. The order is a jumble, usually mixing tracks from two recordings onto one disc. The stylistic difference between her dated 1987 debut and the sophistication of 1988's Watermark makes for some occasionally jarring listening on disc one. On the other hand, the opening sequence on disc three ("After Ventus," "No Holly for Miss Quinn," "The Memory of Trees") is mesmerizing. Overall, nicely done. --Terry Wood

Brought this set to see what's the hype about enya. The packaging is superb, although I would rather have simpler package if that means $10-15 in cost reduction. The recording is fantastic, but the music is only so-so. The tracks have mainstream appeal but often lack the complexity and beauty like those from Secret Garden's. If you like this type of music, give Secret Garden a try.

Massage memories.......2006-03-10

When I first started treating myself to weekly massages about five years ago, my massage therapist consistently played ENYA for the hour I was on the table.

Now, even when I'm on the road and go weeks without a massage, I have only to play this ENYA CD, and my breathing slows, my muscles unclench, and my virtual massage is underway.

What a treat!

..but there are a few minor things to say against it. I think the packaging is kind of on the flimsy side because I have noticed that one of the CD holders on my box is coming off slightly. I'm disappointed that Oriel Window wasn't included on here. Other than that, they did good with the tracks that were included, all the tracks that I rave about are on here (with the exception of any contributions from Amarantine) The full color booklet included is a great bonus for the Enya fan. I have her CD's already, but I purchased this because it was a beautiful package despite its minor flaws..I love how they decided to use purple velvet. I would still recommend this, especially if you have none of Enya's work and you would like to hear some of what she's all about. It's right here. :)

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

A few glaring oversights in an otherwise fantastic package.......2007-04-27

I have to give this one an "A" for effort. A 3-disc retrospective of rock 'n roll's original bad boy, with extensive liner notes, is a fine idea. But calling this a "career retrospective" is a bit misleading.

For starters, where's Lewis's first single, Crazy Arms? You read that right: His FIRST SINGLE. A 3-disc set, 65 songs, but not his very first commercially-released song? Also MIA in this set: The seemingly-biographical ballad That Lucky Old Sun (and yes, I'm aware it was recorded by others prior to Lewis's version). And whatever you might think of the 1989 film GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, the "Killer" recorded some great material, including updated versions of many of his best-known hits. There was also his 1993 "Youngblood" album.

A fourth discs of rare and unreleased songs would have also been nice, although many such gems can be found on Rhino's Rare and Rockin': Original Sun Recordings.

This may all sound like nit-picking to casual fans. And it is. And for most folks, this is all the Jerry Lee Lewis they will ever need. And I'm certainly glad to have the set in my collection. Although I have most of the songs on previously-released discs, the sound quality of those eariler recordings varies greatly. So these discs will no doubt receive some heavy rotation at my house. But if you want the WHOLE Jerry Lee Lewis story, you'll have to look elsewhere to complete your collection.

The Killer is a Legend........2007-03-13

This three CD set gives a wonderful feel for the range of the Legendary Jerry Lee Lewis. It covers his Sun Record years to his Honky Tonk transformation of the 1960's and 1970's. This is a must have for fans of the Killer.

Perhaps the only ommission is the lack of a couple gospel tunes. The Killer had his spirtual struggles.

Fantastic looking, excellent presentation, great contents and - overall - a fine summary of JLL's career.

..although there are a few 'buts'...

The Time-Life VP's introductory remark that there has 'never been a truly definitive JLL anthology' is, of course, nonsense and, leaving aside the obvious attraction of the 1952 recordings, this collection bears some comparison with an essentially similar project called ..er... 'The Jerry Lee Lewis Anthology' (aka 'All Killer No Filler') produced by Rhino in 1993. (Albeit the actual marketing is, of course, pitched at a different level, so one can perhaps forgive this 'oversight'). Rhino have, of course, also overseen this Time-Life issue, and the 1993 set would have made a good starting point for this project in terms of track selection, i.e. the 2 discs of 'All Killer No Filler' could have been complemented effectively by much of the third in the new collection.

To some of the particulars. Another reviewer has already commented on the absence of 'She Still Comes Around' and, as was the case with Universal's recent "Definitive Collection", another of Jerry Lee's biggest hits on Mercury, 'Touching Home' is yet again forgotten. Moreover, this set goes further and overlooks another #1 from the same era, 'Would You Take Another Chance On Me'. The collection is, in fact, hopelessly short of living up to the billing of including '..every JLL Top 20 Pop & Country Hit'. In truth, the only way of accommodating all the hits, and retaining the existing balance of lesser known tracks, would have been to expand the set to four discs with two CDs covering the Mercury era, thus also allowing for better coverage of the 'locust years' from '63 to '67, which are represented by a miserly total of four tracks. So this all begs the question 'why doesn't `A Half Century of Hits' include 4 discs?' - the packaging is consistent with a 4-disc set, and who would have begrudged another $8 or so on the list price?

But it goes beyond bizarre that the 'air-brush' has, far more seriously, been applied to 'Crazy Arms' - not simply excluded from the track list, but even ignored in the text. After 50 years we are now told that 'End of the Road' was JLL's first record. Period. No mention whatsoever of 'Crazy Arms'. This is tantamount to saying that Elvis' first record was "Blue Moon of Kentucky" making no mention whatsoever of "That's All Right, Mama", and who would think to do that?

I also think it unfortunate that in an essay spread over more than thirty pages no room could be found for a mention of Kenneth Lovelace, who has served loyally at Jerry Lee's side for no fewer than forty years of this 'Half-Century of Hits', both on stage and in the studio. Kenny is probably far too modest and unassuming to worry about it, but it is an unfortunate oversight to say the least. I suspect, however, that Colin Escott's words have been rather crudely edited at various points in his text.

These gripes apart, though, overall it is a fantastic collection. Terrific value for money!

The best concise career retrospective available.......2006-06-19

Time-Life managed to pull off a great feat by putting together a set that will not only be pleasing to the casual fan, but will also appeal to the die-hard JLL collectors. It consists of three disks, each focusing on a particular phase in his career.
The first disk consists of recordings from his 1956-1963 stint at Sun studios, where he became the biggest rock star this side of Elvis. The inclusion of the religious discussion is a nice touch. But the ommission of his first single, "Crazy Arms" and the instumental of "in The Mood" in favor of the so-so cuts "Night Train to memphis" and "I'm Feeling Sorry" is a bit puzzling. The last three, more country-oriented singles at the end of this disk make for a nice lead in to the second disk and phase of his career, the Smash/Mercury years.
Disk two contains what is probably the best single-disk collection of his smash/mercury era recordings I've ever heard. Its a great mix of his rockers and hard-lived country recordings, and doesn't skip over any of the hits. Its clear why the original vocals he recorded for "A Damn Good country Song" weren't used; his voice was in horrible shape. But in some strange way, they fit the song very well and it was a treat for time-life to include this version in the set.
The third disk is the true jem of this set- The Electra recordings! Just about every cut on this disk has been out of print for a while. It covers his stint at Electra and Sire records (and gracefully skips over the mediocre MCA sessions). I believe some of the Killers best work was from the three electra albums, and this disk has all the best cuts from them. While the killer had more or less passed his prime by the time he made the sire records, they prove he still has a ton of talent to share with the world. The final two tracks are the much-hyped New Orleans acetate sides he made for himself as a teenager. "Don't Stay Away" shows that Jerry was ready to shake up the world long before he made the trip to Memphis. What I found most interesting was the flip side- his "New Orleans Boogie". He became completely engrossed in the energy generated by the music and let the beat slip away from him several times. It painted a vivid picture of a young rebel who refused to be tamed by society's rules- the world's original punk rocker!
