Transcendant.......2006-02-09
I lived in Japan when Silk Roads debuted. I was transfixed by the haunting melodies then and remain so today. This particular work spiritually takes me to another place and another time. I still have the original Japanese vinyl recordings as well as the CD (both volumes). This, to me, is the musical equivalent of a blue rose.
Melodic Bliss.......2005-09-12
Kitaro was the major pioneer of New Age music from the mid '70s and through the '80s, and though widely imitated, no one succeeded in matching his inspired brilliance. Not even Kitaro himself, as his earlier works have a mystery and a magical quality that were to diminish slightly when he left Japan, where he had a home studio which had a dazzling view of Mt. Fuji. In the mid '80s, Kitaro moved to Colorado, and teamed with David Geffen to record some wonderful compositions, but none that compare with the exquisite beauty of albums like "Silk Road."
The tracks on "Silk Road" were culled from the soundtrack of a Japanese documentary series that began in 1980 and ran for 5 years, and are a seamless stream of melody, with a mellow loveliness and a liquid lyrical mood that does not change from track to track. This unchanging aspect of the recording makes it a superb CD for meditation or study, or just to relax with and allow the music flow through one's mind and soul.
Kitaro built his own synthesizer in the '70s, and though he had many devoted fans in America, the recordings they bought were imports, until 1986. His US recordings, starting with "Tenku", often included live musicians, and brought him a Grammy nomination and huge world-wide success, but if you want to hear the "real Kitaro", the music that started a new genre in the music industry, listen to "Silk Road." Also highly recommended are my favorite, "Ki," and a fabulous compilation of his best work, the 2-disc "The Best of Ten Years." Total playing time for "Silk Road" is 42'05.
I place this album with the best from Vangelis.......2003-11-02
although the style are quite different. Each has their own merits. "Silk Road" sounds more Oriental with a hint of western influence. The melody, instruments selection, recording quality are superb! Love this album and Kitaro's 'Kojiki' (translation something like 'Ancient History').
Absolutely recommend this album if you like instrumentals.
Kitaro's Silk Road is a Good Choice!!.......2003-03-10
I obtained the historical video series "The Silk Road" two years ago and I thought the soundtrack music made the programs much more enjoyable. I found out that the music was done by an artist named Kitaro and I vowed to get a copy of the soundtrack. The Silk Road film series and Soundtrack came out in the late 70's or early 80's and I found the music to be very refreshing compared to some of the new, modern New Age music being churned out. If you purchase this CD you will not regret it. Also ,if you can try and see The Silk Road film (try your local library video section) it will enhance your enjoyment of the music.
A Masterpiece.......2003-01-05
This is probably Kitaro's most well know piece and it is one of his best (all his music is so consistently great) Silk Road was my first introduction to Kitaro so it holds a special place. "Flying Celestial Nymphs" is probably my favorite all time Kitaro song. An astonishing song that touches the spirit and soul. To correct what the reviewer from PA said there is NOT a skip or defect on this CD What they are referring to is the end of track 5 "The Great Wall of China" the songs ends very abruptly at seemingly the peak of the song and then it goes immediately into the next track "Flying Celestial Nymphs" This is part of the original concept of Kitaro, it is supposed to end that way and it is how Silk Road was originally first released on album. For some reason the Gramavision CD release which is widely available in the US choose to fade out the ending of the song before the intended ending. This was against Kitaro's wishes. The version of "Great Wall of China" on this release is actually 5-6 seconds longer than the one on the Gramavision release because it now has the full song. So this is definitely the version of Silk Road you want to get. I hope not too many people were dissuaded from getting this because of that review. This is one of the best. Music of life and peace.

The greatest New Age album ever made........2007-08-05
Yes, it is a lofty statement to be sure to call this the single greatest New Age album ever produced, but once you hear it, you hopefully would agree. Originally released as a two-CD set (with what is now called Silk Road 1), this groundbreaking audio odyssey (originally written for a documentary on the Silk Road connecting China to Japan), is awe-inspiring, moving, and ultimately transcendant. The final track of this epic tour-de-force, Tienshan, is the single greatest track I have ever heard of any kind of music. I have been motivated throughout my life by this entire album, particularly Tienshan. Big words, but it's a big album. I cannot recommend it highly enough if you like Tangerine Dream, Deuter or even Yanni. Kitaro, however, is in a class by himself. Dim the lights, close your eyes, and journey into the deepest realms of time, space and the human imagination with this monolithically beautiful album.
Loved first one , love this one too ........2002-11-28
Cann't tell you about recording quality of this edition - I have older one . This is the part 2 CD from " Silk Road " collection . And it stays with the tradition of first album : slow and deep , very relexing mood . If on some of Kitaro albums I have favorite parts and have to put them on "repeat" ," Silk Road " ( 1 and 2 ) I just listen to .

Yanni with a Hulquin.......2006-06-11
Chinese elevator music.
These are predictable somnambulant melodies resembling Yanni on a Chinese Hulquin colliding with studio sounds.
This disk is part of a flood of commercial, modern Asian new age offerings washing onto American shores designed to fall more gently on Westernized ears by creating a Chinoisery pastiche.
The enhanced sounds and cliche audio effects, attempt to break the monotony of this commercial, repetitious and torturous offering.
This is not Yo-Yo Ma.
Atmospheric Far Eastern sounds.......2002-10-20
I love this cd.It sounds exotic and far away. It's
spacey,etheral stuff that creates a mood that's
haunting and other worldly.Simplistic yet seductive,
it conjures a hypnotic,dreamy feel.It's got a calming
effect that's slightly melancholy at times but very
romantic.I feel like I'm in the ancient orient every
time I listen to it.It's powerful,heady music.
Perhaps better than real Kitaro.......2000-06-24
Once you add some traditional chinese music to that of Kitaro, it's perfect. I am so overwhelmed; I am looking for this kind of music for such a long time and accidently pick this one up after searching Kitaro's songs.
Thanks for making this album possible.
Beauty in its purest form.......2000-02-24
Smooth. Healing. Calming. I have had this CD since it came out, and I have never tired of listening to it. I have hundreds of CD's, and I have searched everywhere, and there is nothing comparable to the richness of Yu-Xiao Guang's music. Has he done anything else? Why not? If he has, where can I buy it?
richly soothing.......2000-02-20
this meloncholic music -definitely from the heart - soothes you to a relaxing mood. you want to be alone, may be with someone you love in a quiet surrounding. it will fill your heart with sentimental emotions. if you have recently broke up with someone, then you best avoid this album. a great album, definitely for those who need peace and quiet in a wonderful way.

THIS IS FANTASTIC CD AND VERY FANTASTIC MUSIC,MUSIC FOR KITARO IS GREAT,MYSTIC AND MYSTERY.THAT MUSIC IS VERY EASY AND FANTASTIC TO HEARING.
Re-release.......2004-07-17
Originally released in Japan back in 1985 (yes, 1985!), the album artwork bears the words "Endress Journey" (not "endless").
It was also released in the U.S. as "Towards The West".
The synthesizers-based album contains soft and charming melodies, in the vein of the style of music Kitaro was making back then... if, like me, you thoroughly enjoyed albums like "Oasis" and "Ten-Jiku", you'll definitely want to grab this.
Strangely enough, the tracks on this record have rarely made an appearance on any of his "best of" albums, which is truly a shame...
But bear in mind that this is NOT a new album; it's more like a 20th Anniversary re-issue.

My first try at Kitaro.......2005-09-21
Well, not exactly. Strangely I got Nipponjin (1975) and Parallel World (1976), two albums from a prog rock band he was in called Far East Family Band, dating back when he was going by his real name, Masanori Takahashi, before I went and got any of his solo albums. Those Far East Family Band albums bear little resemblance to what he would pursue on his own (except maybe a couple passages on Parallel World), having more in common with the likes of Pink Floyd, or (especially on Parallel World) Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream (Schulze actually produced both Nipponjin and Parallel World). It's very much like the difference between Vangelis with Aphrodite's Child and his own solo efforts (although Vangelis did release a couple of solo albums that do resemble Aphrodite's Child).
Kitaro's discography is awfully confusing, because prior to 1985, none of his albums received an American release. Many titles had Japanese names and later versions had English names (like Ten Kai became Astral Voyage). Ki was released after the three Silk Road series of albums (soundtracks to a Japanese TV documentary), originally released in 1981 on Canyon Records, perhaps the better known version was the German version of Kuckuck, from 1982.
Usually I don't go for New Age music, but this is actually quite good for what it is. Mellow, spacy electronic music, I am really surprised to see Kitaro was still using Mellotron as late as 1981, when groups like Tangerine Dream had already gotten rid of theirs before the end of the '70s. The Minimoog is quite dominant, while also including newer polyphonic synths like the Prophet 5. A lot of this music makes me think of a Japanese garden complete with cherry blossoms and stone lanterns, but then that's no surprise given Kitaro himself is Japanese. Most of this tends to the mellow end of electronic music, while the last two cuts bear more than a passing resemblance to Pink Floyd (because of the use of drums and guitars). It's also interesting to note that his old prog rock band, Far East Family Band had been frequently compared to Pink Floyd.
Perhaps the thing that most bothers me about this album is why did he include two songs from his 1979 album Oasis? On this album he included the title track and "Eternal Spring" (renamed "Endless Water" here), and these don't appear to be re-recordings either, perhaps he didn't have enough new material so he included some earlier stuff too, probably to drive home a point that he hadn't changed much stylistically in the course of two years and three albums (the three Silk Road albums that came between Oasis and Ki).
I have since acquired several of his albums, all early ones, and though I seem to prefer albums like Oasis or In Person, this is still recommended if you like this kind of music.
A Glorious Album.......2004-08-18
This is a wonderfull album, made during Kitaro's peak. Melodic and flowing, this album is more like a single unit, than a collection of songs. I've been listening to Kitaro since the seventies, and this is one of his last really great studio albums. Unfortunately, this is out of print. I highly recomend this to any Kitaro fan. Hunt down a used copy if you can, especially the original Japanese version.
kitaro ki.......2004-04-09
This cd is awsum, it speaks to you, it will give you goose bumps, it's really great
my first and still my favorite.......2002-07-19
In 1985, I walked into a bookstore in Lewiston, Maine, and thought I was hearing music from the heavenly spheres. They were playing "Ki", and I became a Kitaro fan from that day on.
Of all my many Kitaro CDs, "Ki" is still my favorite...the one I have 2 copies of, as it's one of the 8 CDs I keep in the car.
I'm one of those that tend to prefer the "pre-U.S.A." Kitaro. Of his recordings, and sadly many are out of print at this time, "Oasis" (track # 4 on "Ki" is same glorious track # 10 theme of the "Oasis" CD), "Asia", "Full Moon Story", and "Silk Road Vol. 1" fill out the top 5 choices for me, and "Ki" of all of them succeeds the best in being a continuous flow of exquisite, soul-filling melody.
The enclosed leaflet says that on this recording Kitaro plays Korg, Roland, Yamaha, Prophet and Mini Moog synthesizers, acoustic guitar, slide guitar, mellotron, drums, percussion, tabla, and Irish harp. The remastered sound is good, and total time 44'12.
Kitaro was a pioneer...it's thought that he was the first to create "New Age" as a musical category. He has had many imitators, but few equals. If you want one of his finest CDs, "Ki" is one to consider buying.
Music for humankind and gods alike..........2001-11-27
I have extremely few "favorites" of anything... but, *Kitaro *Ki is my undisputed favorite musical entity... no other can arouse the humanity and spirituality, I experience from this musical "gift". It is sad that many, many more people never chance across such fulfilling "human exchange"...

An album of fragile beauty.......2006-07-02
After having listened to this 1980 recording several times recently, I am still completely floored by this album. In fact, I still can't believe that I got this out of the New Age section and for only seven dollars.
As a fan of 1970s electronica and progressive rock, I was only vaguely familiar with Kitaro's work in the Far East Family Band, and even less familiar with his solo work: everything that I had read mentioned New Age this or New Age that. Only brief mention of Kitaro had been made in the prog circles, and upon consulting the Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Rock found that they had nothing to say about his solo work whatsoever apart from providing a discography and mentioning him only briefly in a huge section on the Far East Family Band. To further complicate matters, I have personally found three different release dates for this album (1980, 1981, and 1985) and the rest of his discography is equally confusing. As such, I entered into my first experience with the music of Kitaro blindly....more or less.
The instrumentation on this album is heavy on the analog synths and the dreamy, soft soundscapes that would not be out of place on a Tangerine Dream or (especially) Vangelis album from 1977 - 1979 are everywhere on Tun Huang (aka Silk Road 3). I would also throw 1975 Pink Floyd in there too, but that might be stretching it a bit...but not much I might add. The analog synthesizers used by Kitaro include instruments by Roland, Prophet (Prophet V), and Moog (mostly mini-moog), along with the mellotron - everything sounds incredibly warm and organic. Kitaro is also quite the multi-instrumentalist and plays a full drum kit and percussion on a few tracks, along with the sitar (on Lord of the Sand only), tabra, acoustic guitar, chanting bell, and wind chime. Joining Kitaro on this album is violinist Yasuo Kojima - he contributes some excellent playing.
It is however (as it should be), the music that has me so excited. It is richly textured, contemplative, deeply haunting and sad at times, exhilarating, sweeping - you get the idea. Musically, there is far, far too much going on in this recording to simply lump it with the static and motionless approach of ambient music or the homogenized mood pieces that characterize much of current New Age music. Harmonies are used to good effect, there is melodic counterpoint and dynamic range along with shifts in rhythm, not to mention variation in timbre. The pieces all flow together in one song-cycle suite which adds a bit of drama to the overall work, although there is a slight break between Tun Huang and Free Flight. All in all, this was a very nice way to draw the Silk Road trilogy to a close.
Well, stumbling upon this Kitaro album completely made my day and it is very highly recommended to electronica fans and open-minded proggers. For those folks that liked this album, you may also like Albedo 0.39 (Vangelis, 1976), Opera Sauvage (Vangelis, 1979), Force Majeure (Tangerine Dream, 1979), and Tangram (Tangerine Dream, 1980).
Kitaro's Best Studio Album.......2005-05-11
This was originally done during the peak of Kitaro's artistic talents, early to mid 80's. Smooth, flowing, melodic music that travels from one song to the next as a single organic piece of music. This was love at first hearing. There are several versions of this album: the original on the Canyon label, the US import on the Geffen label, and a new remastered version. The best by far is the orignal. I strongly recomend that you seek it out if you can. BTW, if you like this, you will also enjoy Ki, which came out immediately after Tunhaung.
Kitaro's Best... Bar None.......2004-10-30
Maybe it's because this was the first recording of Kitaro's that I heard. Maybe not. After all this time, it still reigns supreme as one of my favorite CD's. It certainly is my favorite Kitaro work. He's done so many fine recordings, but "Tunhuang" soars into the upper relms of beauty. Continuous, flowing melodies that build throughout the disc, culmitating in the sublime "Sacred Journey II". This disc is hard to find and a bit pricey but you owe it to yourself.
Excellent.......2003-03-22
Just like Silk Road 1 & 2. Excellent new age ambient electronic music, Kitaro def. deserves to be in the close circle.
Some of the best driving music.......2002-04-17
Again, it really makes the miles smooth out. Ebs and flows, even changes as the scenery does, I swear! I am switching to a cd version because I just got a new car that doesn't have cassettes. And this is the ONLY music I just have to have in cd out of many cassettes!

Wonderful live perfomance by this New Age pioneer.......2005-11-16
I, as of this writing, only have three Kitaro albums, Ki, My Best, and this one, In Person. In Person was performed in September, 1980 in Tokyo and it comes to proves that Kitaro was just as capable live as he was in the studio. Many of the songs from The Silk Road and Oasis are unsurprisingliy performed. He had some other guys help him out on keyboards, guitar, violin, and drums, and perhaps the most noteworthy guy is none other than Ryo Okumoto. This guy would later find fame in the 1990s with the American prog rock band Spock's Beard, a band (along with Sweden's Anglagard) responsible for giving the sagging prog rock scene a boost in the '90s. He appeared on all the Spock's Beard albums aside from their debut, The Light. But while his keyboarding on Spock's Beard was much more in the style of Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman or Tony Banks, on this album, he pretty much sticks to Kitaro's style, making it really difficult to determine which keyboards were Kitaro's, and which were Okumoto's, mainly additional musicians were here because Kitaro often overdubbed his instruments in the studio and would be next to impossible to duplicate what he did in the studio live if it weren't the help of additional musicians (much like Jean Michel Jarre needing the help of Dominique Perrier and others when he performed live).
Perhaps the biggest surprise in regards to Kitaro was he still had the sense to use Mellotron in the early 1980s when other electronic and prog rock artists (like Tangerine Dream, The Moody Blues, Genesis) had pretty much given up on the tron by the end of the '70s.
Also to let you know In Person Digital, although a live album, did not feature any audience cheers between cuts, I have no idea if they were edited out, but I am willing to believe so (Tim Blake, ex-Gong member, also recorded an album of electronic music live called Crystal Machine and it too had the audience cheers removed).
Although I am not a fan of New Age, tending to go for the more progressive end of electronic music (like Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Jean Michel Jarre), Kitaro at least did an excellent job at New Age and this album is pack with some really pleasant music, and if you enjoy Kitaro make sure you get a copy of this album.
This started It all...........1999-10-09
This live performance of Kitaro's work is exceptional and often overlooked...It has been remastered to perfection. This was my first exposure to Kitaro and I believe it holds up well to everything else he has done from 1981 on.
Sublime mind-music from a New Age pioneer.......1998-12-17
Japanese musician Kitaro's first and best live recording. Kitaro's deft use of synthesizers and wind chimes paints the essence of Eastern mysticism beautifully.
