Smooth As Silk.......2007-08-03
This is a potpourri of Mr. Rutter's compositions, sung by the peerless Cambridge Singers. Buy it only if you want outstanding music that cures the senses.
John Rutter Collection is glorious!.......2007-07-23
This music begins my day in uplifting way. Each day a different piece catches my attention. I am so glad to have it.
John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19
This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.
Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20
I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-03
I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

Donna de Lory has several solo albums out, but she's still best known as a back-up singer for Madonna, fleshing out choruses since the mid 1980s. There's more than a little bit of Madonna in De Lory's voice, at once fragile and vulnerable, yet still powerful, with a gospel-like yearning. On her own, De Lory has crafted artful pop on albums like Bliss and In the Glow, but she also tends toward the mystical and began incorporating Sanskrit mantras or Kirtans into her songs, a tact culminated on The Lover & the Beloved, a full-fledged Mantra journey. De Lory draws from the golden oldies of mantras, including "Hare Krishna," but revs them up with electronica beats, verse-chorus arrangements, multi-tracked vocals, and electronic textures sprinkled in with the sitars and tablas. Cameron Stone weaves his processed cello through De Lory's melodies and harmonium in serpentine rivulets, tying together the tablas of Girish Gambhira and the answering chants of Kirtan singer, Dave Stringer. Endowed with the materiel girl's sense of pop form and irresistible hooks, De Lory posits a confluence between pop and spiritual music, in which a repeated chorus has the same mantric effect as a chant. Her chants could be hymns to Krishna or a plea to a lover, but they are equally ecstatic and powerful. --John Diliberto
Album Description
These Sanskrit mantras bubble with a groove and atmosphere that takes tradition to heaven and back. Donna's voice resonates with ether and earth, beauty that asks you to join in, become one with the sound of deep celebration.

WOW.......2007-06-26
This is a wonderful CD of chants that are both up to date and ancient at the same time. It is calming to the soul to listen to, and later in the day you will find youself chanting the words.....
Soothing. Peaceful. .......2006-09-12
I love all these songs! Soothing and tranquil.
They last a long time which is perfect for use as background music while working or while chatting with friends.
It makes it easier to relax to the melody, let your cares float away as the music wraps around you.
It's one of my favorites, I'm so glad I took a chance and got this one:)
Amazing Soulful Yoga Music.......2006-03-18
Donna De Lory has a beautiful, soulful voice and her music is perfect to practice yoga to or to unwind and get into that zenlike spirit. I ordered the rest of her CDS.
brilliant masterpiece.......2005-09-12
This album is a brilliant masterpiece. Extremely uncommon music, farly outrunning the present. A listener is experiencing a deep feeling of being, also as each piece here, so long, is being changed several times in movement and style. At this web page the short mp3 shows are only presented in one such a style and movement, more torrential but less oriental. The most varied piece is the last seventh: Govinda Jaya Jaya (Mac Quayle Mix). And what's more, the box for the CD is not the traditional plastic, but it is made quite else and I do not mean to disclose, how. For me it was an eye-opener and I wish you the same excitment. It is no lesser masterpiece than the music itself. So I recommend this album to everybody and thank the authors very much for this great experience. You're real masters.
Just love it!.......2005-04-11
A lovely album. Donna brings a sense of creativity, melody and bkathi (devotion) to each of the songs. It starts with a catchy Ganapathi OM, continuing with the same catchiness with Om Namah Shivaya. He Ma Durga brings out the delicacy of her voice. I loved Govinda Jaya Jaya, which is ideal for a group chant that brings a lot of energy into the singing.
I found all the songs to be melodious. The lyrics are simple for anyone to remember easily. The tune is catchy and lingers on after listening. There is a nice blend of western and Indian instruments providing soothing background music. As in many Indian songs/chants, you will find repetition within each song, which is a nice thing. You probably will not notice it as it encourages you to remember the tune/song much easily.
I use this album in my Yoga classes regularly and come away humming for a long time. Just love it!

No Fistful of Ennio.......2007-01-31
Ennio Morricone wrote great soundtrack music, that's for certain. But no retrospective of his work is complete without the inclusion of more than one lone example from the three mid-60's "spaghetti westerns" he scored for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. Anyone familiar with the UNITED ARTISTS label LPs of "Fistful Of Dollars," "For A Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" might agree with this.
As for what's here-- most of ENNIO MORRICONE * FILM MUSIC Volume 1 is forgettable incidental stuff. Except for "The Battle Of Algiers (Theme)," the opening and closing tracks are the best. They bookend what turns out to be a disappointing collection, lacking in both liner notes and the brilliance Morricone demonstrated over a 30 year span.
I would call some of these pieces "newage"..........2006-08-02
Moscow Farewell is definitely my pick of the lot. Sacco And Vanzetti was a pleasant surprise once I listened to it a couple of times. It is lively and could be played on a wedding dance floor for the whole family. This is great album to listen to while in bed!
Simply a 'Must Purchase' for those with a passing interest in Morricone's work.......2005-09-13
Arguably one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Film composer of the 20th Century. Not only has he scored some of the most influential and instantly recognisable pieces of film music during his roughly 50 years of composing atmospheric film scores. Whether he's providing the spooky dramatics for a spaghetti Western" or constructing the ingenious use of classical arrangements of brooding cinematic pieces, he has (in most cases) consistently delivered contemporary music that has provided the atmospheric foil for the picture in question. And with a collection of musical influences that were as far ranging as: classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, he is able to deliver a variety of film scores that are as diverse as they are beautifully composed.
This compilation is collection of some of the seminal, gritty, theatrical, and dramatic film music, that would go on to define his career, via reflective orchestration and memorable motifs, ingenious use of diverse arrangements and instrumentation. There is a majority of his highlights on this disc, with the magnificently brooding "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" opening the disk. what follows is a truly sublime collection of music that is in parts truly beautiful and utterly atmospheric, so tracks such as "Once Upon A Time In The West", benefit from the haunting melodies and stirring volins, that are possibly more in tone with orchestrated music than contemporary music. Or the quiet piano introspection and melancholic arrangements that make up "Moscow Farewell", are simply deserving of being placed amongst the finest soundtrack compositions ever. "Dedicace", contains some of the most litting melodies in recent memory, impossibly sad and affecting, it is a haunting bittersweet composition that is both organic & reflective, over which the volins provide the musical backdrop. And that's without the mention of "For Love One Can Die", the autumnal orchestrated track, that pulls from Italian sweeping gangster original film scores, and makes a hushed and dissonant recording, that feels like a sublime throwback to the mafia-related shenanigans of 60's chicago via the use of restrained piano, that really is quite lovely and adds substantial weight to the composition.
If you are looking for a Ennio Morricone compilation....short of buying a boxset, you'd be hard pressed in beating this for value for money. It's a fantastic summary of his work and covers a fair amount of material. And is the perfect introduction to his work, (especially if you just want to buy one compilation of his work). This is highly recommended to fans both old and new, and is boosted by the compilers making a great job of the selection. So if you don't want to have to splash out on an expensive disk, to hear his influential work...this really is the first place you should start.
ENNIO MORRICONE - FILM MUSIC, VOL. 1 .......2005-08-16
HAVING HEARD EXERPTS OF THE MUSIC BEFORE, IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I
WANTED.
A collection of Morricone's most popular and entertaining.......2005-07-31
Volume I of III, of this 'best of' Morricone trilogy, is the best of the three. This volume consists of music that can be listened to alone and socially, with some of the most catchy and minimalist rhythms you'll ever hear. You'll listen to this album and wonder what movie you've heard that song from before(Morricone's canon being primarily for film scores). If you're hear because you're trying to get the song from a movie, and you've never really heard of Morricone before, then you've luckily stumbled upon some of the best music I've ever heard. Or, if you're a Morricone fan and you'er looking for a good compilation, since Morricone has done too many film scores to even possibly own them all, then this is good to have. I wouldn't really reccommend Volume II and III unless you're looking or a very comprehensive collection of Morricone, since Volume I seems to me to carry his most absolute best. Definetely buy this album, it's very good.

Hooray for Hollywood.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD to go with an Academy Awards/Hollywood Walk-of-Fame theme party at work. It was the perfect accompaniment and mood setter.
It was February and a group of us decorated the lounge with black, gold, and silver tableclothes and balloon bouquets, and scattered around clap boards and faux film strip on the tables, along with movie trivia cards and black and gold wrapped mints. I made a walk-of-fame star for every employee and taped them on the walls around the room. We also laid down a red carpet from the entrance of the room to about the center with the decorated tables flanking both sides. We sat up the snack table with a sign that said, "Studio Commissary" and went with theme snacks like "James Bonbons with Halle Berry sauce," and "The Queen's scones." Each week we took a quarter of the walk-of-fame stars and posted them on the bulletin board for the staff to write peer compliments under. At the end of the week these stars were taken down and the next set of stars was posted.
This CD really set the mood for employees as they entered the lounge for the first time on that first day after it was decorated, and during the party at the end of the month. The month ended with an Academy Award party with an Oscar going to each employee for outstanding effort in whatever category (best dressed, best supporting staff member, most animated story teller, most pleasant entercom voice, most punctual, best sense of humor, most artistic, etc.), and they were given their stars with the peer compliments attached to the back. Everyone commented on how special they felt and how neat the theme was. Good morale booster.
This CD would also be perfect for the ambiance at your own Academy Awards party at home. Print out those ballots, cast your votes, pop some popcorn and pass around the Juji fruits, and let's watch the Oscars!
Kunzel does it yet again!.......2004-11-23
Kunzel & The Cincinnati Pops do a great job everytime, and this is no exception. I'm telling you, if you ever thought that purely intrumental/orchestral was unattractive, this will change your mind. Never a disappointment!
Movie Music.......2002-12-12
If you love that music from all those movies you've seen, then this is the CD you want! It is fantastic!! I want more!! I hope Erich Kunzel will come out with some music from older movies and maybe some TV programs. Listening to his music is better than watching the movie.
More than Beautiful!!.......2002-12-11
This is the absolute best CD they ever put together! And that is saying a lot as we are very picky about what music we like. This is the kind of music that makes you 'feel' deeply. It encourages you to dream big and love living! Forget the grooves, drums and bangs and listen to something incredibly beatiful! You won't be sorry for the money invested in this one bit of sanity in such a hectic world.
This is the one you should own.......2002-10-27
If you are looking for just one solid collection of memorable movie themes, this is it. Other CDs mix marches and fanfares with quieter tracks, which makes for a jarring listening experience at times. This CD, however, has a consistent feel all the way through. Melodic, calming, and, best of all, interesting. These movie tracks weren't selected simply for their sound, but also because they are GOOD. You get the best of the best: James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Randy Edelman.

The rise of Bollywood soundtracks in the West has led to an increased awareness of the unique and often kitschy music and their composers, which have a popularity in India that rivals that of top pop stars in the West. With hundreds of song credits ranging from ad jingles or film soundtracks, as well as the music for the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Bollywood Dreams, the 38-year-old Rahman's resume is such that he's now considered one of the great composers of India. Based on his original score to the film Warriors Of Heaven And Earth, this album adaptation is Rahman's first full-fledged orchestral work. Eschewing tabla and sitar cliques, Rahman takes in influences of Turkey and China as well as India and integrates them into sweeping orchestral arrangements that recall the East-meets-West panoramic beauty of the The Last Emperor soundtrack. Rahman has the rare ability to articulate complex emotions without lyrics, and Between Heaven And Earth is the work of this master in full bloom. --Tad Hendrickson
Customer Reviews:
wonderful.......2006-09-18
I don't remember how I even found this CD. I had never heard of A.R. Rahman but after sampling the music and reading the reviews I decided to buy it. What a revelation! The music is truly a timeless blend of eastern and western. It is at the same time powerful, sensual, deep, primitive, modern and melodic. Rahman blends primitive-sounding drums with lush orchestration and Indian and Chinese instruments. This is one CD of which I do not tire, even after I've had it on "repeat" in my CD player while I'm doing other things. Highly recommended.
Music beyond Zen, beyond words beyond the world............2006-05-17
His music always sent chills down the spine. I feel sad for people who cant understand his music. Here is one rare gem of India. He is the Kohinoor of India. I have listened to this cd like a zillion times. Some people dont understand the genius of this music. All of the compositions are the same melody. Different variations, differnt tempos, different rhythms, different intruments but all of the 15 or so are the same melody. Unbelievable.
The lyrics to the song Warriors in Peace is very deep in Urdu/Hindi. I have tried to translate it below. Hope you guys enjoy it.
There is a calling in silence
(The world is) a marketplace of sighs
A lonely heart is a pity (as in a heart should never be lonely)
Come to me on this side. (as in the side of peace)
(This paragraph is focused on the night after a day long battle when the warriors are resting)
The dusk is setting in on the deserts.
The day has sunk into peace.
A pleasant breeze I dedicate unto thee. (to the warriors)
Rest thy sabers. (as in for ever)
(This paragraph focuses on the world ravaged by wars)
The world is a garden and
Do not color this garden with blood.
Whatever had to happen has happened. (as in atrocities)
Time itself is a healer.
let go of the bitter memories,
that drown lives in tears.
(this paragraph is in hope for the future)
The sun will rise again tomorrow.
Life will go on
Foster the world of aspirations.
For you are not alone; I am with you.
For I see you through the eyes of my heart Oh my companion
Every moment.
Call out to me
Anytime you need a friend
Like the mountain walks into the sea (referring to the lonliness of the mountains and the seas)
In the same manner we shall share our lonliness.
There is ease in tough times.
There is escape in difficulties.
Go beyond all these.
You have lost your dear ones.
you have shed many a tear.
You have to give your courage a destiny.
For you are not alone; I am with you.
For I see you through the eyes of my heart Oh my companion
Every moment.
Here the thing I like aboutt his song is that the lyrics and music both are in perfect harmony with each other. the music compliments the lyrics of Mehboob sahib. And nobody can do justice to lyrics in India beyond Rahman.
The Genius of the Heart.......2004-06-19
Although I am a native American who grew up in Texas on Lightin' Hopkins and Ray Charles, with a diverse taste in music from Mozart to Bill Evans to Emmy Lou Harris, I now listen primarily to A.R. Rahman - and frankly have just about lost interst in any other music.
Rahman is the genius of melody and subtle percussion. His music has evolved out of India, but it also comes from what must be his personal enormous heart-felt love for all of life, humanity and God. His grasp of the eternal and the transcendental in melody will bring tears to your eyes and long lost feelings into your heart.
Rahman is a superstar composer worldwide, loved by literally millions, and appreciated by great musicians in every country all over the planet. I'm delighted SONY has released this, because not only is it breathtaking, magical music that draws you into far away exotic realms, but it is commercially accessible to us as westerners and perhaps it will introduce many more to the Genius of the Heart - A.R. Rahman.
I can't say enough good things about his music. Look him up on the internet - there are dozens of websites devoted to him, his music, and his remarkable life. A modern day Orpheus, India's Mozart - Awesome!
Astonishing Music of the Silk Road: A Powerful Moving Epic.......2004-05-23
This CD will appeal to anyone who loves the music of China, India, Turkey, Western orchestral arrangements, and original musical phrases expressed on traditional instruments. The erhu (Chinese violin), duduk (Armenian styled recorder), and taiko drums crescendo and decrescendo to create peak emotional interludes throughout the CD. I can only say, at last I found the music of A. R. Rahman!!! Having fallen in love with this CD - I very badly want to view the Chinese film, "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" for which the music was originally created.
Review of contents: track #1, "The Golden Era" begins with a delicate flute introduction which grows into a full blown expressive orchestral interlude, occasionally allowing the flute the most prominent status. It is done with a pleasing refinement. "Warriors in Peace" track #2, has sensual feminine vocals sung in Hindi, which enhance the intense appeal of the song. The melody is lyrical, the words are poetic.
Most highly captivating is track #15 which is an English translation of track #2, "Warriors in Peace". Some lyrics follow,
"Call me when you need a friend,
when you need a friend,
As the mountains crumble to the sea,
Trouble always finds a way to keep you away from me.
Look at me through my mother's eyes ...
See who I am ...
Forever free."
"Lord An's Empire' (#3) has intense drum beats that follow the sound of "AH" which occurs in a wave-like rhythmic chant that reminds me of ancient shamanic traditions. I feel my ancestral roots calling, the Hungarian shamans are whispering to me ... Track #4, "Water" begins with the mellow timber of the duduk, that is enchanting, lonely, personal, and haunting. "Horses" (#5)includes the taiko drums that cresendo and decrescendo, as if preparing for battle. It is energizing and dramatic.
"Mountains" (#6) begins with a higly evocative erhu intro (Chinese violin). It is accompanied by strong taiko drums that awaken the senses. Next are the transitional musical phrases of the orchestra. Again, the rare lone 'voice' of the erhu enters only to be overcome by the intense taiko drum-beat, seems to be a call to battle. Next, one hears Tibetan monks doing their guttural sounds ... chanting for peace, knowing full well that men are preparing for war. "Blue Light" #10, has a soulful soothing flute intro which grows into an orchestral crescendo/decrescendo ocassionally broken up by an unexpected interlude, the sounds of a lonely duduk and the clanging of cow bells. The effect is stunning ...
My sincere thanks to A.R. Rahman, the Czech Film Orchestra and Choir, Sadhana Sargam (Hindi vocals, "Warriors in Peace"), other vocalists and musical soloists -- for this magnificent creation of epic proportions. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

Excellence!.......2007-04-22
These recordings range back to 1994, with a number of tracks being from Silva Screen's "Music from the Films of Clint Eatwood" compilation, with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic.
Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.
The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.
Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".
A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.
The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.
Highly recommended.
"his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07
Silva America once again has outdone themselves with "Once Upon A Time:The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Music Collection", a double disc collection worth their weight in GOLD! ~ Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores...action, adventure, mystery, romance, sentimental and suspense...the list could go on.
Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.
Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.
City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

One of the most underappreciated releases of 1999, Heaven & Earth features some of the most exciting and creative female talent in the Christian music world. Michelle Tumes's worshipful ballad "For the Glory of Your Name" leads off the release, and could be one of her better recording efforts. Producer John Hartley, who wrote and managed this pleasing project, magically segues Tumes's wistful number into Jennifer Knapp's Celtic-oriented "Whisper My Name." It's a device tastefully used throughout as artists Nichole Nordeman, Margaret Becker, and Rebecca St. James blend one into the other. The seamless threading of Tumes's "My Dwelling Place" into St. James's "River of Life" explains why these singers are so well drawn together. Although stylistically different, each woman approaches the music in a spirit of worship. This is so much more than a collection: it's truly a well-woven celebration of talent. --Michael Lyttle

Great Worship Project, But I Have Some Disappointment.......2007-03-12
This project says on the back of the CD, "Some of Christian music's most popular female voices join together in this collection of contemporary worship songs." This project is what I expected "Women of Faith" to be, a combination of known artists.
On the positive side, I will say that this is a nice worship album. There are good songs on the tape, soothing, and well written. My favorites were "For The Glory Of Your Name", "Whisper My Name", "River Of Life", "Heaven & Earth", and "Christ Before Me".
On the negative side, I think the women were under-used. I was hoping, as a new comer to Michelle Tumes and Jennifer Knapp, to get a feel for their music, but I didn't. The above quote is correct that these women are popular for their vocals, but what is ignored is that these women are also gifted songwriters in their own right, which has been passed by. The producer, John Hartley, did the lion's share of the composing. Rebecca St. James was a co-writer on the first song she sang, "River Of Life", and Margaret Becker helped with "In Your Love" (sung by Nichole Nordeman), but this is not a good representation of these ladies' talents.
If you like female vocalists and want a beautiful worship project, then buy this project, don't pass go, don't collect $200. However, if you are considering this as a fan of one of the singers or are wanting to become more familiar with some of their music, this is not the project to get.
Awesome Christian Music Collection.......2006-05-05
One of the pitfalls of buying collections of songs like Heaven & Earth is that you always anticipate the CD will have either one or two songs that you like, and will dislike the rest, or will be great except for one or two songs that you realize dislike.
But on Heaven and Earth, unlike any other Christian music compilation that I have heard or own, has a group of songs that are uniformly entertaining and uplifting. No fluff. No filler to stick between one good song and the next. All of the songs on this CD are solid. A lot of that is because of the great singers that participated, representing some of the best in Christian music - Rebecca St. James, Michelle Tumes, Margaret Becker, Jennifer Knapp, and Nichole Nordeman. Particular standouts include "For The Glory of Your Name" by Tumes, "In Your Love" by Nordeman, "Jesus Hail The Lamb" by Becker, and "River of Life" by St. James, although again, all of the songs on this CD are great. This CD is a must-have for Christian music lovers.
Disappointed.......2005-12-11
Nichole Nordeman and Jennifer Knapp are two of my favourite female Christian artists - and it was their involvement in this album that inspired me to purchase it. From the very first listen I was disappointed at the lack of depth in both the music and the lyrics. The music lacks solidity, the lyrics are somewhat predictable and lack the depth that I would usually associate with Nichole and Jennifer's own music. I look forward to more albums from Nichole and Jennifer, but I will be more careful about compilations such as this in the future.
Spirit Annointed, Delivered by Angelic voices to Us.......2004-06-24
We all have confusion in our lives. It can be hard sometimes. But God is always there. A beloved friend and brother in Christ whom I love told me once, "Seek His Face." He's right. What helps me most in my life is knowing and loving God. I was doing some dishes and the urge to listen to this cd I've had for years hit me so strongly that I could do nothing but comply. "Christ Before Me" was the first song the Spirit led me to, a favorite of my heart and I was lost in adoring praise and joy of Christ being all about me. But oh, "As We Wait" as I listen to yet again is what I want to write the lyrics to share:
"Hear as we call for Your Spirit, Hear as we call upon Your name. Breathe on us, O Lord. Come to us as we wait. (We WILL wait.) Almighty ONE, Our strength and song, our God forever. Our King and Christ, Our hope in life, Our God forever. Come."
The beautiful, uplifting and annointed voices of Michelle Tumes, Jennifer Knapp, Nichole Nordeman, Rebecca St. James, and Margaret Becker--all glorious to listen to over and over [and most if not all, have their own solo recordings,] but here is the best place to start and I whole heartedly recommend you buy this and be uplifted in who you really are in Christ. One more thing, I was listening to Chris Rea before this. And now as I embrace the golden, humble angel, Nichole, (probably my favorite soloist) singing "In Your Love" and I am reminded that no matter how long it takes, if even my whole life, I WILL wait. The answers will all come with time for me, and most certainly for you as well. May the Peace of Christ be with you, my friend. ONE.
Soar in o8E with me...
More like 10 stars!.......2003-12-13
This is an awesome album! I don't know how these women were selected to sing the songs, but whoever picked them knew what they were doing. Not one bad track on the album! The singing, music, arrangments are beautiful and truly inspired. I highly recommend this album.

Better than Celine Dion...barely.......2007-02-01
Such a pitty this great vocal tallent made so many of these sweeeeeet recordings...
In order not to come off as too strict a jazz purist, I would like to point that I recall buying an Aretha Franklin record in the 80's, the one in which she sounded ridiculosly close to Whitney Houston. If memory serves me well, Narada Michael Walden was responsible for that misdemeanor (not to say crime) as well. It's the album where she had a hit duo with George Michael and, as sole (at least remotely) creative point, recorded "Jumpin'Jack Flash" (was Keith Richards on guitar at that particular song?).
Don't get me wrong, if Jarreau sounds like Whitney Houston on this album, it still makes this CD better than the music of Celine Dion... But if you want my humble opinion, only barely!
Not one of the best........2004-06-01
Sorry but I must disagree with other reviewers here as IMHO this record doesn't live to natural expectations from such a great singer as Al Jarreau.
Except for the tracks 1 and 2 this record suffers from a lack of inspired melody heard on other records. The quality of the sound is a little too bright and artificially processed. Definitely not recommended.
One of Jarreau's best albums.......2001-08-23
Heaven and Earth (1992) was Jarreau's first release since 1988 and was a lot more R & B oriented than previous efforts. This was probably due in part to the producer/arranger Narada Michael Walden who was one of the hot producers (for Whitney Houston, among others) at the time.
The uptempo numbers - a Walden specialty - are the least impressive. The opener "What You Do To Me" is a fine dance track, but doesn't take advantage of Jarreau's immense vocal abilities, and the new jack swingin' "Blue Angel" and "Love Of My Life" would have both been better suited to any of the New Edition alumni.
Jarreau shines brightest on the ballads. The title track and the soaring "If I Break" melodically showcased the stylish sensitivity in his voice, with the single "It's Not Hard To Love You" and "Superfine Love" utilizing Jarreau's vocal gymnastics best of all. On the latter, the orchestrations are challenging enough to push Jarreau's voice toward its limit yet still allow it to remain in the forefront.
Jarreau concludes the album with his two-movement rendition of Miles Davis' "Blue In Green," with lyrics added by Jarreau and Frank Martin. On a jazz number like this, Jarreau proved that he was still peerless. Ultimately, Heaven and Earth was an admirable effort by Jarreau to create a contemporary sound while remaining true to his roots.
Moving Heaven and Earth.......2000-08-02
Jarreau can move heaven and earth with the fast paced rythms and the soulful lyrics found in this CD. If you need to get your feet moving and your heart up from being down, then this is the Jarreau for you.
Passion Personified.......2000-06-14
This disc is my first CD of Al Jarreau. I came to like him very much. His versatility of singing style is very attractive and surprising. Not like current hip-hop-centric R&B scene, but his music is fashionable by his own artistic modulation. Sound is also clear-cut. Not an extraordinary album, but I can feel very rich and happy everyday with his music.
