Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

One year after erstwhile Primus leader Les Claypool reemerged as the leader of the jammy Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade, the bass wrangler throws another curve. With Purple Onion, Claypool reigns in much of the free-floating improvisation of FFB's initial releases in favor of something more akin to a proper Primus album, complete with bizarre comic voices, eccentric scenarios, and funky interludes. But this isn't a true Primus album, since there are absolutely no seafaring references on any of the 12 songs. In fact, many of the numbers are less songs than loosely connected chapters of a concept album somewhat akin to Alice Cooper's grim 1975 classic, Welcome to My Nightmare. But instead of Cooper's disturbed Steven, Claypool chronicles David Makalster, "a 10 o'clock newscaster" whose broadcasts of doom are worthy of Frank Zappa in his prime. Claypool here demonstrates that he has the daring to take Pink Floyd's excesses and fuse them with his own nerdy paranoia to create a singular album. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars I'm a jazzer, so what can I say?.......2007-01-18

Les Claypool is one of those individuals who does music for the sole purpose of doing music. It sounds to me like he digs to the core of music itself and tries to pull the creative, not to mention dark, musical forces that HAVE to be running through his head. These forces are transformed into something progressive, on its own level, that leave you with a band like Primus and a product like "Purple Onion." This CD is something that I'm certain not everyone will like, but I enjoyed it because it tickled the musical muses flowing through MY head and left me with a perspective on music that I had never before experienced. I hope that gives you a better encite into what Purple Onion is all about...

5 out of 5 stars A must have!!.......2006-12-27

my son bought this cd and put it in the car stereo on the way home, i fell in love with this cd EVERY song is great and very catchy, i had to burn a copy from his for my own use.
i played this cd every day for over a month it was so catchy and great then we got to see him in boulder at a show and he is just a great performer and very talented bass player

4 out of 5 stars Claypool Is A Visionary...(4 and 1/2 stars).......2006-08-08

This is one Les Claypool's many side projects from Primus, this one callled "The Flying Frog Brigade".But this doesnt sound much like Primus. It is much less heavy than Primus, and alot more experimental and jammy. This is definately Claypool's work though, containing all the quirky sense of humour and story telling elements that he is associated with. And as with every band Les is involved with, the musicianship is excellent.
The best songs are "David Makalaster","Buzzards Of Green Hill","Whamola","Ding Dang","Lights In The Sky","Up On The Roof",and the best song on the album:"Cosmic Highway".I think a few of the songs couldve been effectively cut("David Makalaster II","Barrington Hall")but this is a great offering either way.
This album is highly reminiscent of Frank Zappa, and propably the next best thing nowadays...so I would suggest this album,if your familiar with Claypool's work,or are a fan of Zappa.
Pick this up,along with any Primus album.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding..........2005-11-06

You have to wonder at a world where a cd like Purple Onion is overlooked. While far from perfect, there are so many great songs that the cd easily earns five stars.

Where to start? Well, how about "David Makalaster", the ten o'clock newscaster, who reminds us that "anarchy is back in style"? Or, perhaps, "Whamola" - which I like to think of as Les' cautionary tale about conformity, though the song is almost without lyrics! "Buzzards of Green Hill", "Long in the Tooth", "Ding Dang" and the closer "Cosmic Highway" are all outstanding tracks. The rest of the songs are...um...merely good.

I don't always know what Les is getting at, but I'm up for going along for the ride.

4 out of 5 stars another from the great mind of les claypool.......2005-09-29

amazingly i first heard this from a copy that i found at my public library! amazed as i was i immediately went home to play this, expecting more of the same from the great mind of les claypool.and man did he meet my expectations.in my opinion the best songs come in the first half,"purple onion" and "whamola" being my favs.i want to give this a perfect score but the second half isn't as memorable,in my opinion, even if the tunes are still very good.i've always loved claypool's music and still do.he is one of those artists who really do stand out.i couldn't help but think of the late great frank zappa while listening to this as the humor and different music are somewhat similar, but never in ripping him off.for those unfamiliar with claypools work i wouldn't necessarily start here.instead i suggest familiarizing yourself with "sailing the seas of cheese" and "pork soda" by primus first.if you don't get it with those two than you more than likely will not get it here either.musicians should really appreciate this though.with any hope it will inspire some to produce more music that is different than the rest, instead of recreating whatever is in at the moment.oh and case you didn't know, les is the best bassist in the business and deserves to be considered one of the all-time best along side cliff burton and geddy lee.thank god that les didn't fill cliff's spot.could you imagine what that would have sounded like though? who cares.put down that god-awful emo and pick up a copy of this...it may do you some good.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz

If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

3 out of 5 stars It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

4 out of 5 stars Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-10-23

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

4 out of 5 stars just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Les Claypool's premature midlife crisis has resulted in the second of two grandiose albums in under four months. But Live Frogs--Set 2, recorded at the same two-night stint in San Francisco as the first set, is a much different beast than the inventive jam-band noodlings of its predecessor. And beast is the operative term. The bass master decided to take on the darkest of Pink Floyd's albums, doing an almost note-perfect rendition of Animals. Claypool and company have subsumed Roger Waters's nihilistic lyrics and rendered them even spookier by giving them a more ominous comic-book feel--imbuing the words with much more irony and adenoidal bite than Waters and David Gilmour's original sterile, android-like vocals. Although Frog Brigade's made-for-TV version of the bleak anthropomorphic classic lacks the subtle orchestration of the original, they do make up for it in sheer zealousness and invention. --Jaan Uhelszki

If you are a Floyd Fan ~ this is truly an experience you will want to hear. It's the full album ~ as it should be. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars best Les Claypool offering .......2007-01-29

Not only is this the best Les Claypool offering, it's only the second CD I have kept of him. Oysterhead is another, but I rate that second to this one. Pigs on a wing songs start and end this cd is, well not much, it's all the meat of the 3 songs in the middle. I have this on ipod and we sat on the north shore of Lake Tahoe and watched the sun set with this baby going. its a long 3 songs, Talk about trippin.

Sorry to slam all the rest of his work, I just don't like it. Primus sounds to much like a bunch of guys running into each other. I have given Primus cd's and tried 2 concerts, all because I love bass and Les is well, you know, the man on bass. Frogs live 1 didnt work for me either, now the SHOW was cool, loved that, but does not transfer over to cd that well. why I have no idea. I WANT it to work out. I wished I were into ALL Of the mans music.

I saw Frogs in concert in what, 2001?

Todd Huth on geetars. He was bringing out all kinds of dif ones.

And Tree Frog, that's his name, on percussion, he wore this all green doctor outfit, and just went ape on the drums, standing the whole time. That was a show!! One of the best I ever seen of any show of any band, and I have been to hundreds of concerts. I am only a couple months older than Les.

Sherik on sax, monster player.

And the man that drove the whole show, not Jay Lane, some black guy on drums, who IS this guy I have not been able to find out. Was a sit in? I have seen the primus DVD with the frogs and the black guy that was in the show I saw is not on the DVD, and several shows are on the DVD, dude was killer! Looks like Isaac Hayes or close! Drove the whole show! Why isn't he on the DVD??!!!??? WHO IS HE! Can anyone tell me? Please post a reply if you know.

So if you or someone you know like PF AND bass, but not Primus type metal, then this is the deal. Heck I dont even like most of PF the WALL album, but Roger Waters In The Flesh CD/DVD is one of the best all time albums ever. That can spin on my ipod just about anytime and never get tired of it after all these years.

what the hey, I guess I am as weird as Les.

maybe this is due to the Flesh cd and Frogs live 2 put out so much power out of the recording? All the reg PF cd's dont put out any power, I have sold them all. why is all this, I dont get it. Is it the people who mix it? the producers? the equipment used to record it? I can take these same cd's and play them in everything I own, home, car, ipod, all several thousand dollars worth of media, rattle windows if want, or use friends and families, its all the same. And everyone reacts the same way as I do. So go figure.

At home I also have Sennheiser 595 headphones, stunning. worth the money.

Sorry Les, I hear another version of the Frogs is out again, I missed them last year, and a new album is due out, but some delay for whatever reasons. I hope its good. Waited for how long for PF Pulse to come out and all this chatter about it that led up to it, turned out to be more lame junk.

Yea I am picky, so what, whatever, its my money, I deserve better, we all do. I know whats good after 25 years of listening.

If Les would go on tour and play a reg set and then this music off this cd for second set. At all shows not just the SF show one time only deal that turned out this great cd, now that would be stunning and floor everyone that goes and send them out the doors happy as can be.

5 out of 5 stars 99% Flawless, Extreme detailed atmosphere!!!.......2006-08-13

I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan for the last 20 years and Animals was always the "Dark" albumn you'd listen to when in certain moods...
I've always liked Primus, but was never a HUGE fan.. until thier DVD came out and it seemed every other weekend I'd be jonesin to watch it.. I looked through the catolog of Les Claypool and found this.. 1 week later it came to my house and was put in without a second...
This CD has such a rock solid foundation of the original it is amazing! It actually seems more busy than the original meaning the bass just jumps out at you.. I guess I was expecting Les Claypool to adlib parts of bass, but he never does..It is a serious duplicate of the original.. Its got it all.. Voice Box guitars, keyboards, sounds like Gilmour himself is playing.. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who is a Pink Floyd fan.. This beats the crap outta Roger Waters solo "Live Wall" disaster... which is nuts cause that was 1/4 Floyd..

1 out of 5 stars 4 Star Musicianship - 0 Star Vocals.......2006-03-10

Incredible musicianship and overall energy, but -- sadly -- the vocals make this almost unlistenable for me. I'll stick with the original.

Fans grieved when Les Claypool put his funk-metal band Primus on ice, after he declared that he had reached an aesthetic dead end. It seems the bass-wrangling frontman has worked himself out of his creative despondency. Claypool's band of collaborators, including original Primus guitarist Todd Huth, Critters Buggin' saxophonist Skerik, Rat Dog's Jay Lane and Jeff Chimenti, Pearl Jam/Chili Pepper's skinbeater Jack Irons, and newcomer Eenor, turn out 70 minutes of live alchemy with the sum so much greater than its seemingly disparate parts. The rag-tag band take obscure diamonds in the rough and transform them into extended, edgy soundscapes that tickle the ears and intrigue the mind. They breathe new spectral light into King Crimson's "Thela Hun Ginjeet" and Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" while striking such a heady funk groove in "Girls for Single Men" and "Riddles Are Abound Tonight," that you'd swear Bootsy Collins was on board. Just when you think you're beginning to understand where this eccentric outfit is headed, they switch gears and you find yourself on an island paradise swaying with the palm trees on the surf-o-delic "Hendershot." Live Frogs is jam rock of the first order. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

The full title/artist is 'Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade Presents - 'Live Frogs-Set1'. Primus main man Claypool continues to broaden his horizons with another musical alliance. This comes on the heels of his recent success with Oysterband (which also featured Trey Anastasio of Phish and Stuart Copeland from the Police). All of the original songs are garnered from Claypool's two side project releases to date. 1994's Sausage release 'Riddles Are Abound Tonight' and the album 'Highball With The Devil' from 1996. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Amazing live set from Primus frontman.......2006-10-04

Absorbing concert jam, far from comfortable due to acquired taste Claypool, but undeniably proficient in the art of the warped live jam. Playing a majority of original solo material, the decade old stuff has positively taken on a new shine. Claypool's unabashed enthusiasm for incorporating a broad range of musicians into his maniacally comical live sessions, including this time the heavy incorporation of surf sax, will have fans basking in the new interpretations. The two cover songs as well are handled with eccentric, talented care. With most things Claypool, the performances can get a little over-indulgent, loosing track of melodic structure in favor of pure unbridled rhythmic jam- despite there being an abundance of outstanding solos and synergies throughout the musical show off. Still, anyone interested in the art of the jam, granted one will accept the perverted spin Les puts on the genre through his nasal vocals and aggressive, quirky instrumentation, will be heavily rewarded with this great live experience.

5 out of 5 stars buy this live album immediatly!.......2006-04-26

this live set of les claypool's fearless flying frog brigade is extraordinary, an explosive first set right off the bat with Thela Hun Ginjeet and just doesnt quit the entire show, everyone playing at this show are in the peak of their playing, it just sounds amazing, not one single note is off, or wrongly played, absolutley one of my favorite cds i own, if i ever lost it, i would need a replacement, if youre a les claypool fan or just love straight up solid funky jams, get this cd, you wont be sorry

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best live album I have ever heard........2005-09-16

The title says it all folks. I will do a song by song review, and note: this album gets a five, but i am grading the songs based on the others in the album; they all get 5/5 otherwise, but in the context, some are better than others:

Thela Hun Ginjeet- A King Crimson tune, the frogs do a great job of interpreting it on the stage. However, even though this song would be the highpoint of any other record, here its just one of many greats. 4/5

Riddles Are Abound Tonight- This song kicks. It just does. Les plays bass like a madman on this, and just doesn't stop. Eenor and Todd Huth battle it out on guitar, while Jay Lane and Jeff Chimeti hold the groove, and Skerik busts out a fantastic sax solo. 5/5, and well deserved.

Hendershot- Surf's up! Hendershot gives Eenor and Skerik time to stretch out, with extended solos and nice groove development. A fun listen indeed. 5/5

Shattering Song- This song is very iffy with me, as at times I am bored by it, and at other times I am completely blown away. Today is this song's lucky day, as I can't help but love it. 5/5

Running The Gauntlet- The solos in this song save what is quite a simple-structured piece of music. Jeff, Eenor, Todd, Skerik, and finally Les get to stretch out some solos, and although amusing, this song is actually a lower point. Still a very strong piece though. 4/5

Girls For Single Men- The only song that outclasses the bass playing on Riddles is this ripping version of Girls. Les and Skerik own this show, each having a ball on their respective instruments and plain old rocking. Eenor and Todd provide great guitar lines, while Jeff and Jay and Les do what they do best- groove reinforcement. This song is a slap in the face, as good as it gets. 5/5, 10/5 if I could.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond- The Fancy Band pulls this one off excellently, but to find its origins in a Les cover band, this is the place to look. Les has always been a Floydian fan, and couldn't help himself with covering a few Floyd tunes (see Set Two). 5 out of 5 stars better live.......2005-05-15

There is an age-old saying that goes with music: "They're better live." And, for some bands, this is entirely true. Dave Matthews and the Grateful Dead both come to mind when I think of that age-old line, so why not Claypool? Most Primus fans will tell you that the energy from live Primus is simply overwhelming, and I will attest to that. Studio Claypool is amazing in itself, but hearing Claypool live brings forth-another dimension of sound that cannot transpire through the speakers of any home audio setup.

With those things said, I also need to point out that this is not Primus. This is Claypool's later project, The Frog Brigade, and they sound much more jammy then Primus. Encompassing a sexy saxophone, the Frog Brigade has a jazzier jam-vibe that layers nicely with the funk-vibe already established by Claypool's bass-work. It's difficult to describe this album, because this album is much more broad and expansive then the Frog Brigade's studio album, Purple Onion. Purple Onion is fine, but it isn't very jammy nor does it give much room for the songs to expand. Live Frogs, Set 1 is a tremendous jam album, giving equal amounts of time to every musician to screw around and just play whatever the hell they want for a few minutes.

The CD opens up with King Crimson's Thela Hun Ginjeet - the lyrics are removed, and the song is extended, giving plenty of time for Claypool to get into a nice bass groove while the band works around him. Riddles Are Abound Tonight has a fantastic Saxaphone solo, and the bass-work is incredible. It's not quite as intricate as some of the stuff that was outputted by Primus, but then this is a jam album and not a bass album. The drum work is also incredible on this song, and is actually fantastic throughout most of the CD, but it will probably go unnoticed by most listeners as the bass and sax steal the show. The live version of Hendershot is fantastic, and much more interesting then the studio version. There is a tight guitar solo in the song, and the keyboards also give the song a lot more personality. The Shattering Song is an amazing live jam, and the guitar - I'm not sure what you would call it, maybe "slide-middle-eastern-guitar" - is absolutely incredible. In front of the guitar is the bass, of course, and the keyboard, which sounds really damn good. The Shattering Song, one of the more lengthy songs has an amazing saxaphone solo, with a lot of little intricate guitar work going on in the background, all while Claypool is keeping the music flowing with the exuberant, flashy bass-line. Also, is an incredible little diddy, "The Jim Bush," which goes back to that "slide-middle-easter-guitar" thing. I guess you could call it sitar on guitar, and wow, does it sound fun to play: top notch. The live version for Running The Guantlet is also superior to the studio version (anyone seeing a trend here?), featuring a lot of cool soloing from everyone, and fantastic drum work which will probably go unnoticed by the majority. Girls For Single Men is kind of a heavy song, that would bring back Primus memories, except for the saxophone that dominates the introduction, and the fantastic underlying keyboard work. The live album closes with another cover: this time Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond. The cover is absolutely haunting, with just as much haunting synth-effect as on Wish You Were Here, giving more emphasis to the bass, and bringing everything out a bit. The live cover also foreshadows Live Frogs, Set 2, aka the cover of Animals (the album). All in all, this is probably one of the best live albums I have ever heard and easily would be on my top 5.

This is quite the live album to have, and is easily one of the best. The massive layering of instruments into an intricate, tight, unified whole is amazing. Everything fits together nicely, and everything jams. The production is TOP NOTCH. You can hear the crowd, but they don't overtake the music. The CD doesn't feel over-produced either, you get a sense that all the musicians on stage know what they are doing, because, guess what, THEY DO. The selection of musicians here is incredible - divine musicians. The Frog Brigade is SUPERIOR live, and has so much energy that you can't pass this one up. If you were let down by Purple Onion, pick this one up, and I guarantee you will get some closure. And, if given the opportunity, see these guys live.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing album by a collection of virtuosos.......2005-01-04

This frog brigade lve album breaks new ground in rythym and sound, and is a technical masterpiece.

Thela Hun Gingeet- An unusual song but extremely well done. Don't try to figure out the lyrics, but do figure out the amazing synthesizer solo and the sax solo (yes, that is a sax going through distortion) 5/5

Riddles are Abound Tonight- An awesome bass line, and a dark song with an amazing beat and sax solo. 5/5

Hendershot- A tropical song that by far exceeds the Holy Mackeral version. Weak lyrics but fantastic sax (again) and Eenor is the man. 4.5/5

Shattering Song- A great rythym but a bit too floaty and plodding, though Eenor's little Jim Bush piece is not to be missed. 4.75/5

Running the Gauntlet- Probably was a single on the Holy Mackeral album, sounds like you've heard it before, but the songs' derivative nature is outshined by the amazing introductions and then the solos that come after them. 5/5

Girls For Single Men- Les is ridiculous with this one, his playing is impeccable. The guitar part is hounting, and the use of ambience is awesome. Todd Huth kills in his short, but sweet solo. 5/5

Shine on You Crazy Diamond- Never heard Pink Floyd or Jack Irons version, but I'm sure this one is better. Impeccable. Amazing. Perfect conclusion (semi-, at least) 5/5

In conclusion, this is one of the best albums i've heard in years, and is actually longer than most 12-track studio albums. pick this one up if you like music.

Dowland's lute works are among the most beautiful compositions of the Renaissance period. Because so many of his pieces are wistful and sad, he was known as "the melancholy Dowland," although McFarlane's selection offers a fair number of more cheerful pieces. These performances are extremely stylish, alert and expressive in every moment of the music. Paul O'Dette's Dowland recordings for Harmonia Mundi are also very well played and include all of the composer's music on five discs. For a single-disc introduction to the composer, this Dorian CD is ideal. Dowland fanatics will need O'Dette's series, and perhaps McFarlane's also. Dorian's sound is extremely realistic. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Superb single volume collection of John Dowland's lute music.......2005-12-15

I first heard John Dowland's lute music many years ago as a classical guitar student, thought it, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the Spanish repertoire the cream of the music for the guitar - and still feel mostly that way. But it was awhile before I was able to find recordings of Dowland's music.

Ronn McFarlane's "Lute Music of Dowland" is a wonderful introduction to John Dowland's lute music. His playing is delightful, the digital recording itself captures his lute beautifully, and the CD offers 28 Dowland compositions, a number well known, some not, all performed stylishly in a way that captures your attention from the very beginning, to the end, of the CD.

Dowland's music represents the very peak of Elizabethan lute music in late sixteenth centry England, a period which began with lutenist John Johnson, and whose music spread in popularity across Europe.

There is an unmistakable melancholy quality about Dowland's music, but it also contains numerous memorable pieces, such as Sir John Smith's Almaine, My Lady Hudson's Puffe, The Earl of Essex Galliard, Melancholy Galliard, Queen Elizabeth's Galliard, Lachrimae, The Frog Galliard etc,; some extraordinary passagework, and appeal that very much transcends time.

Ronn McFarlane's Dowland CD on the Dorian label, along with Jakob Lindberg's Dowland CD on BIS, are the two best single CD collections I know of Dowland's lute music, apart from Paul O'Dette's five volume collection of Dowland which the serious or compleat Dowland collector might prefer. (Julian Bream also offers Dowland on his lute recital CDs, but these include other composers.)

    Strongly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-10-22

This one's a winner. The music of Dowland is eternal. The lute playing and recording here is peerless. The Amazon review is right on. I'm not such a lute fan, but I return to this CD often. I want more from lutenist Ronn McFarlane! Bravo to all involved here.

4 out of 5 stars El Espíritu del Renacimiento.......2001-05-25

¡Bienvenidos!

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

    5 out of 5 stars A marvelous interpretation!.......2005-07-05

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

I bought this after hearing this version of frogg galliard on the radio. The whole CD did not disappoint me. I'm no expert of lute music, but if you like Dowland, this is worth a listen.

The sound quality here is very good. My only complaint is faint breathing noises in the background. These noises are more apparent on some tracks than others. But overall they don't bother me. I bought the Paul O'dette Dowland set, and for me, the breathing noises just ruined an otherwise amazing performance.
