Cosmopoly [Enhanced] [Live]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider has always fallen just shy of brilliance. An underrated harpist, he rarely lets his flights of string fancy loose on his albums. And as a conceptualist, he usually paints himself into exotic, Gaudi-esque towers, without an exit. Cosmopoly provides that exit, but Vollenweider rarely takes it. On this album of collaborations, a jam with jazz piano legend Abdullah Ibrahim is as tentative as a first date, and Vollenweider is swamped in the mournful bath of Armenian doudouk master Djivan Gasparyan. The harpist follows Bobby McFerrin's lead in a dance of vocal pyrotechnics and his jams with trombonist Ray Anderson result in the most superficial hipster clichés. Carly Simon's rendering of a section of James Joyce's "Finnegan's Wake" is strictly an arty star-turn for the singer, a longtime fan of Vollenweider's.

Vollenweider fares better with his own band on the riveting melody of "Stella." Here, as well as in his writing for the Solis String Quartet and on a languidly dolorous duet with Brazilian singer Milton Nascimento, Vollenweider reveals the tuneful melodicism that flows out of his fingers like water from a spring. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars One of Andreas' Best.......2007-01-30

This CD is very different than most of Andreas' other creations, mainly because it's a mix of styles and musicians, which is one of the reasons why I like it so much. Andreas is a harpist - world famous for his unique sound and compositions. His music is not at all like what you would expect from a harpist. This CD is no exception. Cosmopoly is a collection of friends, and as each of them are known for their own sound, such as Bobby McFerren ("Don't Worry Be Happy"), so are each of the tracks on which they appear. Personally, I would recommend this CD to anyone who is as eclectic as I am - a collector of many fine things. Jon

2 out of 5 stars Andreas could do better...much better........2003-06-11

I have just about all of Andreas Vollenweider's albums except for the latest 3. Last two I bought were Eolian Minstrel and Kryptos. I did not get the Rose album because it was not of the calibre of his other works. When Eolian Minstrel came out, I was very satisfied with it. Then came Kryptos which much of the album was not of the same spirit that Andreas had with his previous works but I bought it because of one of the pieces that I became hooked on. When the Cosmo album came out it was just not good at all. It just sounds like he put no heart into it.
I do hope that he starts to go back to how he had previously put these projects together starting from Caverna Magica.

3 out of 5 stars The high points are so good...but there are also valleys.......2002-06-23

My feelings for this CD are a bit mixed, but the enjoyable part is very enjoyable. Especially enjoyable to me were "Morning Poem" with Carlos Nunez on the low whistle, "Vals Del Sur" and "Long Road to You" (how often do you hear an ocarina?).

There were more vocals than I would've hoped for on this type of recording. And it very definitely does not flow when you play the CD through. However, try the sequences given on the booklet's back cover, "The Loop Map", and you will achieve far better flows. If only the cuts had been arranged according to those suggested loops. To do so, there would've been a repetition of "Capriccio", but that would've okay.

I like and respect Andreas Vollenweider and think that he certainly deserves better than three star reviews, but if I'm honest in my opinion, and yes, it is strictly subjective opinion, I feel he's fallen way short this time. Maybe more of his own talent and better sequencing next time....

4 out of 5 stars Cosmopoly: A departure for the Vollenweider of yesteryear.......2002-04-05

I must say that I found many of the selections on Cosmopoly to be rather abstract, and consequentially, not as enjoyable and relaxing as previous CD's. Ignus Fatuus, for example, was clearly a spontaneous musical writing, that, while humorous at first, nevertheless, failed to satisfy my conservative musical tastes.

The most noteworthy, and enjoyable pieces on this CD would have to be Stella and Cor Do Amor. I would say that these 2 selections would be worth paying 15 dollars for, but it would be nice to have more than 2 songs to listen to on this CD. Currenttly, I have to set my CD player to repeat track 2 repeatedly so I can listen to Stella continuously and jam to it with my sax or clarinet. Boy, I wish I could do that with other songs on this CD!

If you're a AV fan, this one is definitely worth purchasing, though. Just be prepared for something "different".

I gave this CD,as a whole, a 4, though individually, I would say that Stella and Cor Do Amor are 5's.

5 out of 5 stars Another super album from Andreas Vollenweider and Friends.......2001-11-15

Andreas Vollenweider is a musical genius, and Cosmopoly proves that his abilities are timeless and continue to thrive with time. This album has a variety of guest musicians and singers who add even more diversity and universality to Vollenweider's compositions and his ability to incorporate elements from many cultures, giving everyone something to which they can relate and love. My personal favorites are 2, 3, and 7. Andreas Vollenweider speaks to our hearts and souls, celebrating life in the cosmos.
