5 out of 5 stars This is one mellow album.......2002-03-21

The Bossa Nova craze took over the U.S. by storm back in the '60's, due not only to Jobim and Gilberto (both Joaò and Astrud), but also to a long list of Brazilians that included Oscar Castro-Neves, and to the efforts and influence of a few Americans at the time: Charlie Byrd, Stan Getz and Paul Winter. (Getz got too much of the credit, in my opinion, and almost all of the money, but that, as they say, is another story.)

"Brazilian Days" is a backward glance to a period nearly 40 years ago by two who were there at the start: Paul Winter and Oscar Castro-Neves. Calling upon all those decades of friendship and reminiscences, these two have gone back in time and selected their personal favorites, many of which will be unfamiliar to most. And it's just as well, for this collection is as fresh as a Bahian sea breeze.

All of these feature Castro-Neves' unique guitar and Winter's one-of-a-kind horn-playing at its mellowest. (Reed players the world over could take a lesson or two from Winter on sound and phrasing; totally unique, never forced, and never wears out its welcome.) The rhythmic pulse and harmonic language are spot-on, as one would expect of these two veterans: jazz and blues inflected in the inimitable Brazilian style that caused the initial sensation all those years ago, now brought up to date, and perfectly so.

Not a one of the tracks on this album is less than first-rate. But, if I had to pick a favorite, it would be "Imagem," with its constantly-shifting tonal centers and its drop-dead gorgeous ending, with just the right hint of "fur" in the tone of Winter's horn at the fade-out.

Like a fine wine, this music definitely benefited from the aging process. With Paul Winter's early Columbia albums, produced by the great John Hammond, also now freshly remastered for CD (and available elsewhere at Amazon.com), it's a straightforward, and enjoyable, task to compare Bossa Nova by Winter in the early 60's with Bossa Nova by Winter in the late 90's. The man's feel for the style is better than ever.

A great sound from an earlier era, gently and refreshingly brought forward to the present.

Esteemed lyricist, composer, vocalist, and poet Vinicius de Moraes is best known outside his Brazilian homeland as the lyricist for many early bossa nova classics co-composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Baden Powell. Recorded in 1971 as the follow-up to de Moraes's popular 1970 collaboration with guitarist Toquinho and singer Maria Creuza, Days in Del Plata is something of a lost gem. It was recorded in the studio while de Moraes was performing nights at the Argentinean club La Fusa with the then-emerging Brazilian singer Maria Bethania, who sings on three of the 11 songs here. The vibe is loose, with de Moraes in front of a small band, reading his poetry and speaking between songs. His warm, gravelly voice is rough-hewn but lived in. The mix of popular and (then) new material is in the samba, bossa nova, and, according to de Moraes, "musica nova" vein, but all of it has the allure of classic Brazilian music: warm, sinuous, inviting, festive. --Tad Hendrickson

3 out of 5 stars Weird Combination of Stuff.......2003-10-21

This is an interesting CD. While the selections and arrangements were top rated, The performance was inconsistent. The average score overall will be a fair 3 stars.

From the album title, I suppose it is an album with Brazilian festivity. Yes, the supporting musicians were twisting, but our main player Ms. Robison was not.

Ms. Robison has very beautiful yet mild tone for most part of the album. Her attitude & sound is very suitable for French compositions, not Brazilian. (Her album with Ruth Laredo is a much better one). For a high energy, fast tempo South American music selected here, she need to step out from her moderate classic box and have more excitement! Sometime, I sense that she was out of breath, trying to catch up with her fellow musicians.

Flute itself is not an instrument to produce large sound. It can, however, give appropriate light and shade. From Pixinguinha's year, flute has proven to be an adequate instrument for small Brazilian music ensemble. A modern example will be James Galway's excellent Latin selection: Tango Del Fuego, which overcome limit of tube and offered dazzling flavors.

The slower pieces in the album are where her specialty comes. With sensible intonation and subtle expression, this album can be enjoyable here and there. Too bad most songs requires dynamics and spirit of dances which Ms. Robison did not provide.

Names of songs in this albums were translated (or transformed) from Brazilian to English. I do not understand why. Maybe the arranger thought once the songs were re-configured, they deserve new names. But this cannot explain why spices were missing.

If you like Paula Robison, go for her classic CDs. There are a lot of excellent ones to choose from. You can skip this album, and miss almost nothing.

        5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!.......2003-08-18

This has been one of my most played CDs ever, and I am usually a rock and roll fan! The music is fun, beautiful, upbeat yet soothing. All instruments are played wonderfully, and the flute is just phenomenal. Great music for all occasions and all tastes. Makes me happy just thinking about it.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection of Talent.......1999-12-18

Rio Days Rio Nights is my 1st exposure to Paula Robison and her flute. This CD is a masterfully engineered collection of Latin-flavored smooth jazz tunes performed by a group of very talented musicians. What a talent Ms. Robison is. I give this CD a very enthusiastic two thumbs up! (both hands)
