Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Music to be remembered and replayed.......2006-06-21

First heard John Stewart in the 70s. "Cannons in the Rain" is my all-time favorite. Bought it first as an album, then a cassette and now a CD. How's that for standing the test of time! Thirty plus years and I'm still listening to it. When I want to drift back to a memorable time and place, I let John Stewart's songs take me there.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2001-12-25

Cannons in the Rain is pure John Stewart.

This is one of his early albums recorded after his time with The Kingston Trio and I feel that this is a definitive John Stewart classic.

"Anna on a Memory" is almost without equal as a example of the man and his experiences.

You listen to this music and you get the feeling that this is a man who has done a lot of living. Not only has he done a lot of living but he has translated life into music that is earthy and straight forward.

This is not what you would call "commercial music". This is music is more of the reflective thinking type of music that Stewart does so very well.

This CD was first recorded as a album in the late sixties and time has not taken anything away from it.

5 out of 5 stars Let the Big Horse Run.......2001-11-13

"Wingless Angels" sometimes gets less-than-stellar reviews (Stewart himself points out that it is not his best), sub-par engineering most often cited as the culprit. Owing to ears not as discerning, for my money it is as good as anything he's done (except maybe "California Bloodlines"). It has a great amount of diversity in its offering with "Let the Big Horse Run" being a rouser that's well worth the price all by itself. "Cannons in the Rain" makes a nice match as there is some fine music played by some very good musicians.

4 out of 5 stars John Stewart - An artistýs artist.......2000-03-28

John Stewart is an artist's artist. His work is recognized by tunesmiths such as Rosanne Cash and Nanci Griffith, but he has never broken into the mainstream of popular music. The subjects addressed in Cannons In The Rain (1973) and Wingless Angels (1974) are as scarce in popular music today as they were in the early 1970's. Patriotism and love of country are the themes of `Armstrong/Spirit' and `Survivors.' The women in John's songs are always viewed with gentleness and reverence (Anna On A Memory, All Time Women, Josie). These aren't ladies that you'd see shopping at the MegaMall with cellphones in their hands and an SUV parked outside. John's romantic interests are from small dusty towns far off the interstate.

Cannons In The Rain was recorded in Nashville and has an overall country luster. The original pressing of Wingless Angels was marred by substandard production. The CD version shows a marked improvement, but is still flawed. Perhaps John Stewart's world is too idealistic for mass acceptance, but that's OK by me. When I want realism, I'll turn on the 10 o'clock news. Don't miss John Stewart's enticing lyrics and admirable musicianship.

3 out of 5 stars these songs are about us!.......1999-08-14

while no songs on this cd are classics(except"SURVIVORS")if you were to turn off the t.v.,throw away the newspaper, and turn on the stereo AND LISTEN,you will hear songs that tell about you and what you have gone through, what you went through growing up,what you like to remember as well as what you would like to forget.these songs will make you "feel"

sit back, listen, and go home again.and mr.kane, there is nothing uncomfortable about patriotism. enjoy, js99@gateway.net

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two different but great albums.......2004-08-26

I must disagree with some of the other reviews. While Cannons in the Rain -- like any JS album -- showcases amazing songwriting, the production is a tad too slick. It's still a must-have for anyone interested in the greatest living songwriter this country has. Wingless Angels, on the other hand, is not simply the most underrated album ever released by John Stewart; it may be the most underrated album ever released by anyone. "Survivors" is a celebration of, and for, Americans who understand that patriotism doesn't require blinders. "Josie" is an unforgettable portrait of a stock character of American folklore, the hooker with a heart of gold. "Let the Big Horse Run" will bring back memories for anyone old enough to remember seeing Secretariat complete the Triple Crown at Bellmont. Like Cannons in the Rain, every song on Wingless Angels is a winner. The diference is that the arrangements serve the material better.

5 out of 5 stars The American Classic Story Teller.......2004-05-02

...John Stewart is one of the very few artists whose music and lyrics give creedence to the American Folk Music. Traditional folk music has always been dominated by the European Culture but here is America's Giant. America's story teller in song and music. In this collection, John addresses Political, Sports and life events at their best. Here in "Armstong" and "Let the big horse run" John captuers two very different moments in time and story. Depicting each correctly to the walking persons on the streets of America the impact of these moment. I've followed this gentleman and his career since his early days as the 4th member of the Kingston Trio replacing Dave Guard. "Survivors" correctly identifies the emotion that swept America during the "Watergate" hearings. In the Materpiece "Some kind of Love" John captures not just the words alone but also that very unique feelings that Love has presented us all at different times in our lives. Anyone with an intrest in American Folk Music will find something here that spans the test of time and so brings forth the true sensations of a moment in time. John Stewart in these collections does indeed establish himself as the American Classic Story Teller.

5 out of 5 stars Cannons in the Rain and a Cow Mooing Would Still get 5 Stars.......2003-03-08

Cannons in the Rain is a marvel. Every song is a classic, IMHO. John Stewart and Fred Carter made an unbeatable team. They should have started a supergroup. (BTW, where would Paul Simon be without Fred Carter?!) I think Wingless Angels is John's weakest effort. Kind of lazy and hazy and overproduced, like the weather outside the LA studio it was made in. Unfortunately for John's career it came at a time of high hopes and momentum, and (momentarily) killed them. The only good thing about Wingless Angels is that John wrote The Runner and The Last Hurrah, two phenomenal heart-crushing songs (on Fire in the Wind), as a result of the negative fallout.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2002-07-10

"Cannons In The Rain" is one of John Stewart's early albums and I feel that it is still one of his best.

If possible I would rate "Cannons In The Rain" at six stars.

This CD has just about everything that is good about John Stewart.

I feel that his voice is at its' best and the songs are earthy with a nice balance of insight and cynicism.

I got hooked on "Anna On A Memory" the first time I heard it and I still play it again and again and again.

I guess there must be some stray dog in me.

"Wingless Angel" is a different matter, it is good but seems to be incomplete.

I never have been able to really get "into" this CD for some reason.

To sum it up, I frequently play "Cannons In The Rain" and rarely
listen to "Wingless Angel".

If these CDs were separate I would rate "Wingless Angel" at three stars.

4 out of 5 stars half n half.......2001-11-13

This is my 26th JS album/cd. Cannons tunes way better than Wingless--probably why they were combined. Wingless is JS's weakest effort, mainly wind, eagles, rain, trains--put one in, pull one out.

5 out of 5 stars Flamingo Gardens Concert.......2004-05-15

David Bailey... I live with a rare cancer, medullary thyroid carcinoma. i have survived 4 years against all odds so far...never remission, just stable. dr,David Arnold was my surgeon and Dr. Aaron Wolfson,my oncologist. I guess we are just determined to live and not let cancer get the best of us,right? I had the good fortune of attending the recent Sylvester Cancer Center's 9th Annual Cancer survivor day at Flamingo Gardens,Ft. Lauderdale, and I listened to you tell your life through your music. It was emotional. You do it with a mix of tears, laughter

and feel good music. i wish you the best of everything life has
to offer and Gods blessings. My name is Barbara Kimbley...email-Barb7310@aol.com

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-12-06

This is a great CD. Folksy, poetic lyrics and memorable, expressive melodies ranging from deeply spiritual to just plain fun. My sister heard him sing at her church in Denver and sent this CD to me for my birthday. I had never heard of this guy before, but I am now going to buy his other albums. Reminds me of a cross between James Taylor and early Paul Simon. Uplifting lyrics of joy, peace, light, angels, and, of course, coffee!!

5 out of 5 stars David M. Bailey's Coffee With The Angels CD.......2002-11-19

Awesome CD! I however ordered it off [another] Website direct for less! ...Cool site...I recommend taking a look!

4 out of 5 stars Giving Up On Nothing!.......2002-11-12

david's music takes much more of a spiritual influence than his past cd's. Always rich with the influence of talented "back-up artists," amongst the 18 songs on coffee..., he is accompanied by 8 back-up vocalists, 4 guitar players, and 3 bass players, even a bagpiper! With all of these performers, some of david's intricate string work seems to get lost. For some this will be a reasonable trade-off, compensated by the rich influence of the accompanying artists. A diverse artist, bailey hams it up in his witty Java Junkie--an anthem to his / society's obsession with coffee. Even tea toddlers will enjoy this comical chord. And you will absolutely flip over the bagpipes in Great Peace. Inside the Rain, aptly titled will bring tears to your eyes. Don't scramble to your liner notes, the wonderful back-up singer on Anyway, may sound like Aretha Franklin, but trust me it is not. Unlike earlier cd's, there is no preaching to doctors to be found, which makes coffee... more mainstreamed for the general listener who will enjoy the wisdom to be found in the gentle reminders bailey's music provides. A few examples: "A Moment is Forever, If You Choose To Carry On;" "Keep On Walking, We're Only Here For a Short While;" "Giving Up On Nothing;" "God Can Use You Anyway;" "Everybody Needs a Second Chance;" "It's Good to Have a Friend; & "Great Peace." bailey's message is certain to the touch the listener's soul, much like talking with an old friend-a friend with a rich, weathered, baritone spirit. This cd will not gather much dust in your collection. Hallelujah!

5 out of 5 stars David Bailey is AWESOME!.......2002-09-16

I just saw David Bailey perform at my church recently. I hadn't heard of him before. I bought this CD after the concert, and I keep it in my car. I haven't heard the cd as a whole, but he performed most of the songs on it. It is INCREDIBLE! His life story is AMAZING, a true blessing from God, and his music shows it. Great songs, I can't wait to get his other cds.

3 out of 5 stars Nice brass selection except for "Eonta".......2002-02-16

Overall, a diverse and well-performed selection. I recommend almost all the pieces, and am particularly fond of the Ruggles. But if you're a hard-core modern music enthusiast, don't get this disc for the Xenakis - the performance of Eonta is strangely flabby and punchless, kind of a "Xenakis Lite" (I've heard an excellent live performance, which was nothing like this recording). If not for the substandard Eonta, I'd have given the disc four stars.

Most beautiful piano music that I have ever heard. Very calm and beautiful music. Would highly suggest it to any one who likes the sound of the piano.

5 out of 5 stars Healing wonder, enchantment, sensual love.......2001-04-17

I received this music after undergoing an operation on my neck. Mary Steelsmith, the LA playwright, said it would help heal me. Well, it has done far more than that. The gentle, yet soothingly complex melodies of this solo piano CD will touch your very soul. There isn't a weak track on this CD, and although each track easily stands alone, synergistically, the sum is even greater than the individual tracks. A Sunday afternoon, enfolding your significant other in your arms, is enhanced just that much more by Mr. Leonard's piano melodies, although this CD is simply wonderful any time.
