Check it out. I've been told for years how these recordings changed the development of music in JA, but have never beem able to truly hear it before. I have 3 versions of BJD and one of RD and all sound like mush compared to this. A revelation.

This two-disc beauty represents three Lee "Scratch" Perry LPs, "Blackboard Jungle Dub," "Revolution Dub," and "Cloak & Dagger." Perry fans know that these are some of the greatest recordings Scratch ever produced. We have listened for years to junky distorted versions of "Blackboard Jungle," and a lot of this music we haven't even heard at all. Finally we are redeemed. The quality on "Dub-Triptych" is absolutely amazing, and your old granny could tell the difference between these versions and previous releases. This stuff has not been presented properly and in its entirety since the original LPs came out, and the sound here may be even better than it was then. Don't forget, with "Blackboard Jungle" we are talking about one of the greatest, many say THE greatest, dub LPs of all time. "Blackbaord Jungle" dub represents the best Jamaican musicians, the most creative producer (Perry) and, in case I didn't mention, mixing done not only by Scratch, but also by King Tubby!

In short, this is some of the best dub and instrumental Upsetters music ever, presented with what is possibly its best sound ever, and available in its entirety for the first time in the digital era. There are even a few extra goodies thrown in to boot, and with 52 TRACKS TOTAL, this set is also a great bargain. "Dub-Triptych" is quite simply one of the best Lee "Scratch" Perry releases ever, end of story.

Dub Triptych is a 2 disc compilation of 3 early Lee Perry dub albums that have been out of proper print or never released -- Cloak & Dagger(1973), Blackboard Jungle Dub(1973) and Revolution Dub(1975).

while Cloak & Dagger slightly hints at what was to come, Blackboard Jungle Dub is full on dub: eerie sound effects, slow-fi beats and sly, brooding bass. tracks like Black Panta, Khasha Macka and Drum Rock make for a dense & ghostly atmosphere, while tracks like Elephant Rock and Kaya Skank are more up-beat and aggressive. being one of the first dub albums, it remains a concentrated record with zero filler.

Revolution Dub is slightly uneven with the first five tracks being a little more interesting than the rest. Bush Weed, an ultra slow slab of bass-heavy spookiness, is the album's best moment.

Dub Triptych also captures the developement of a movement perfectly. as you listen to both cd's in order you can hear the mixes getting denser, filling with a cerebral atmosphere. also, take note of Perry & the Upsetter's obvious influence on other groups from Bauhaus to Massive Attack to even Skinny Puppy.

definately worth it since you're getting 3 albums for roughly the price of one, and one of them being a classic.

Demon Hunter is my favourite band. Period. However, this special edition was very disappointing for me, as I already own the original release of The Triptych. It has a few extra acoustic tracks (which I never care for anyway) and some poorly remixed favourites that were perfect already. The making of was ineresting, but unsatisfying.

I regret purchasing this, if not for the simple addition to my fan collection, and never even pull it out anymore.

RECOMMENDATION: If you already own the original and can live without a few mediocre bonus tracks and so-so making of videos, save the cash for their next (hopeful) studio release.

I'm surprised how many of you all didn't like the acoustic arrangements - you're free to make up your own mind, but as for me, I thought they were exceptionally well done. Yes, I love the electric versions, but there is something raw and deep about these particular acoustic arrangements - in my opinion they build on the originals.

This is the best Speical Edition CD I own and thank god I got it for Christmas. Reviews of the song

1. The Flame That Guides us Home- Very cool intro to Not I.

2. Not I- Awesome song to start off this awesome CD.

3. Undying- Great song and my first video from them.

4. Relentless Intolerence- Really good guitar and lyrics.

5. Deteriorate- At first, I hated it. Sounded like Linkin Park kind of singing. But after a few listen, it became one of my favorites.

6. The Soldier Song- My favorite song off this album. Very great song for the people who are fighting the war in Iraq. I love the solo too.

7. Fire To My Soul- For some reason this song should be the song to start of this album. Anywho, this is a great song.

8. One Thousand Apologies- Same as Deteriorate.

9. The Science of Lies- My second favorite and I love the drums during the chourse.

10. Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck- Never heard of the Prong version of this song but it sounds a really good song from Prong and Demon Hunter.

11. Ribcage- Last heavy song on this album and my third favorite.

12. The Tide Begin To Rise- Nice slow clam song

13-15- There all acoustic...and not my type of music.

16. Undying Remix- Great remix I'm also a fan of techno music.

i'm just going to write about my favorite piece on here, which has been heard by all who saw Platoon. that is Barber's Adagio. hearing this piece conducted here by Bernstein sends chills down my spine, especially in the well done section using silence after the climactic rise in notes!

I must agree with the previous reviewer, that "American Masterpieces" comprises a very thoughtful collection yet suffers slightly from poor interpretation of certain pieces. But the presence alone of the classic performance of William Schuman's "New England Triptych" by Andre Kostelanetz and the New York Philharmonic makes this compilation all worth it. I have looked forward for this particular version of Schuman's work to be released on compact disc for several years, in the meantime not being entirely satisfied with other versions that have circulated, i.e. Howard Hanson/the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra on the Mercury Living Presence label, -very poorly executed with an off-key, off-timed horn in the first movement, or the version on the RCA label by Leonard Slatkin and the St.Louis Symph.Orch. which is very well done, yet to my ear still does not compare to the depth and lively energy with which Kostelanetz and the New York Philharmonic presents this work.

I was disappointed with the manner with which the first two pieces by Berstein and Ives were conducted. The "Candide Orchestra" lacked the sensitivity of the performance by Lukas Foss /Milwaukee SO on the Pro Arte label, while Slatkin does a much better job with the Ives piece for RCA.

But the remainder of colorful material following Schuman on this CD - even with the overdone "Adagio for Strings" by Barber - makes for a very rewarding listening experience, with the only disappointing exception of the third piece ( "A Narrative") curiously missing from Virgil Thomson's "Acadian Songs and Dances", yet present on an old scratchy, mono LP that I have on the Decca label (Thomas Scherman /the Little Orchestra Society). Did Thomson later revise this suite? Or did this CD run out of space? If the latter is true, one can only wish that Barber's overplayed "Adagio" would have been bumped to make room for the entirety of Thomson's superb "Acadian Songs".

4 out of 5 stars American Masterpieces - For pleasure or music ed. resource.......2000-07-28

The American Masterpieces CD is an excellent compilation of music that is uniquely American. Much of the material is based on folk sources, and all of it is thoughtfully selected. The only negative is that some of the music is not the best version available, but I'm sure that's due to the limitations of the Sony label. The "Adagio for Strings," for example, is taken at a slightly fast tempo, lessening the dramatic impact of the build-up. The selections are a music educator's delight. Bernstein's "Candide Overture" is perfection. Ives' "Variations on America" is a wonderful study in the use of a familiar theme in an unusual manner. "When Jesus Wept" can be sung by a chorus and then compared with Schuman's treatment. Gould's "American Salute" is an exciting study in theme and variations on the familiar tune, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." And, of course, Gershwin's "Promenade" is delightful, and an excellent follow-up for the Fantasia 2000 film. The reason I bought the recording was for the Gottschalk "Grand Walkaround" and "Jamaican Rumba" by Benjamin. Both are based on American folk materials (Sweet Potatoes - Louisiana, and Mango Walk, respectively). The original songs can be sung, compared, performed in an Orff arrangement, and then presented in the orchestral interpretations. The folk songs are both found in the McGraw Hill music series, Share the Music, Grade 5. If you like this CD, try the American Salute CD from Musical Heritage Society.

While Fred Deakin of Lemon Jelly did pull this triple compilation together, don't be deceived and thing this is a Lemon Jelly album. It has quite a range of material on it, but may not align with your idea of what a Lemon Jelly album is. Additionally, there is no new Lemon Jelly track included either.

But if you're looking for a mixed chill out/trippy/funky album, perhaps you might enjoy it.

Although Schuman wrote his Violin Concerto in the 1950s, it seems very much at home in today's world. Loud, abrasive, aggressive, it is punctuated by deafening crashes; the opening sets the stage with a solo that leaps back and forth with dizzying speed and momentum. The violinist seems to spend a lot of time competing with the percussion, but the second theme is poetic and tender, giving the violin a chance to do what it does best: sing. It also gets to converse with the orchestral soloists; indeed, the orchestra is an equal partner rather than an accompanying group. The second of the two movements, oddly titled "Introduzione," includes a rhythmically pungent, witty, charming Scherzo, and a long orchestral fugue, as well as more singing sections and more bangs and crashes. The solo part is fiendishly difficult, with runs at top speed, stratospheric passages, double and triple stops, and one long and one short cadenza.

In addition, it is full of instantaneous changes of mood and character, demanding utmost control of tone, nuance, inflection, and expression. Philip Quint negotiates all these technical and musical hurdles with easy virtuosity, aplomb, poise, and stylistic empathy. His tone soars rapturously in the lyrical parts, his playing is forceful but never rough. The two pieces of Americana show Schuman in a different, gentle, intimate light, though the first of the Triptych also abounds with brass and percussion. Ives's Variations, masterfully orchestrated, are a grand joke, poking fun at every imaginable dance form and even including his trademark polytonal imitation of two bands playing simultaneously. These "American Classics," interestingly, are performed entirely by non-American players: a Russian-born violinist, an English orchestra, and a conductor of Polish-Uruguayan descent. I have just bought this CD because it was a rainy saturday afternoon and just fancied listening to something new! When I put it on to listen I couldn't believe just how perfect the recording sounds!! What an amazing combination of 'raw' sounding energy and excitement combined with a beautiful elegance. The balamce between the soloist and orchestra is better than I have heard on any other recording I own. Pretty impressive piceces too! Well done Naxos!!!

This can be a very short review. The music is splendid, alternately compelling and delightful. The performances leave nothing to be desired. The sound is in the demonstration class. This would be a wonderful CD at full price; at the Naxos price, it's a no-brainer. Don't miss this one.

I wish I could wax as enthusiastic about the Violin Concerto as other reviewers have done. As Serebrier says in his sympathetic liner notes, the concerto has all the drama--I'd say histrionics--of Schuman's symphonies, a drama that for me is much ado about--little. Though Schuman is clearly a fine craftsman and a great orchestrator, I can't buy into the rhetorical seriousness of much of his orchestral music. One problem is certainly that unlike his contemporary symphonists Aaron Copland and Roy Harris, he is "tune-challenged."

Thematically, his work always seems impoverished to me, except of course in his finest and most popular orchestral work, "New England Triptych," for which William Billings supplied the tunes. Schuman supplies the drama, which here is marvellously apt, from the curious tension of "Be Glad then America" through the pathos of "When Jesus Wept" to the clamorous "Chester," over whose jingoism Schuman seems to equivocate in a most fascinating manner. This piece defines the phrase "cautiously optimistic" in musical terms; perhaps Schuman was thinking of the awful cost of patriotism in the 20th century.

The orchestration of Ives' "Variations on America," originally for organ, is again Schuman in a populist vein, and given the younger composer's skills as orchestrator, this good-natured send-up of American patriotism is enormously entertaining. Serebrier delivers these works with all the requisite verve, and I can't imagine them being any better done. Indeed, past performances I've heard on disc pale besides these, especially in Naxos' beautifully engineered recordings.

But, about the concerto: Though I may find its drama uncompelling, certainly Peter Quint and Serebrier can't be faulted. Quint, a Russian-American, seems very much a violinist on the make. Unless I miss my guess, he will have an exciting career. For Schuman lovers, his performance will certainly enthrall. For the rest of us, he makes the most of a work that isn't quite an American classic.

This is an excellent recording of a piece that does not get performed or recorded often. In fact this is the only recording of Schuman's violin concerto I have ever run across. Philip Quint plays flawlessly. I am very impressed with his superb abilities.

This latest release in the Naxos "American Classics" series solves two problems for me, gets me to retire a CD that has well earned its retirement, and throws up a fresh challenge.

One problem solved is a lengthy search I had been making for the CD transfer of a 30-year-old LP, by Paul Zukofsky with Michael Tilson Thomas and the Boston Symphony, of the premiere recording of the "final" version of Schuman's Violin Concerto. While I had at least one stop-gap CD (Robert McDuffie, with Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra) to tide me over, that performance never seemed to have the same visceral excitement that Zukofsky's did. This new Naxos performance, featuring Philip Quint (my first hearing of Mr. Quint) not only puts into retirement the McDuffie/Slatkin recording; it also exceeds the Zukofsky/Tilson Thomas recording by a comfortable margin. Quint is fully the technical and lyrical equal of Zukofsky. More importantly, the performance of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of José Serebrier is stunningly virtuosic, and the whole is captured in equally stunning sound. The extended timpani solo that opens the second movement, to mention just one performance highlight beyond the solo work of Mr. Quint, is a bravura performance and the sound quality is of a level that would do any high-end audiophile label proud.

Another problem solved is a similar search for a CD transfer of an elderly LP, this one a recording of Ives's "Variations on `America'" as orchestrated by Schuman, with Morton Gould and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. (This, when it was intially released, had been coupled with the world premiere recording of Ives's First Symphony and "The Unanswered Question." A CD transfer of the First Symphony had an entirely different coupling.) These variations - whether in the original organ version (which Ives's father forbade him to play in church, lest "the boys giggle") or in this famous Schuman orchestration - are a lot of fun for most Americans. Since the tune is also "God Save The Queen," one hopes that the Bournemouth musicians got an equal level of enjoyment out of the performance. The recording certainly suggests that they did.

The CD that truly gets retired with this Naxos acquisition is the Howard Hanson/Eastman-Rochester Symphony Orchestra recording of Schuman's "New England Triptych." Despite its age (1963), it has held up exceedingly well, and was always one of the very best of the Mercury Living Presence CD transfers. But this new Naxos performance is the hands-down winner on all counts: orchestral precision, ability to follow inner voices with ease, sublime string playing in the "When Jesus Wept" movement, the best percussion work I've ever heard in the concluding "Chester" movement, and of course sonics.

To this Bill Schuman aficianado, these three works - when taken with his masterpiece, his Third Symphony - serve well to sample his abilities as a composer. (Well, the Ives orchestration may be considered "Schuman Lite," but it's certainly fun.) Each of these Naxos takes is at the top of its class, in my not-so-humble opinion. To get all three together, at this price, can best be described as a "ka-ching!" (the sound of a cash register, if you've never seen the expression before).

This is not the first time that I've commented on the work of Serebrier at these Amazon.com pages. An earlier review of his Reference Recordings CD of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Sheherazade" and "Great Russian Easter Overture," with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, garnered equally high praise (but coming at a considerably higher price than this Naxos CD, of course). What Serebrier seems to bring to these quite disparate sets of works, orchestras and labels is an attention to detail, a precision of orchestral performance, and a balance of all choirs and instruments in the orchestras that is significantly above the norm. I sense that part of his conductorial "toolkit" is his skill in getting the musicians to truly listen to each other as they play; failing this, I'd be at a loss to explain the results he obtains. Admittedly, this is a small sample on which to base an opinion, much less a conclusion, but it is my opinion that Maestro Serebrier is a "sleeper" amidst the current flock of publicist-driven music directors. Which gets me, finally, to the challenge: Will this new Naxos disc survive my "test-to-destruction" efforts that some recently memorable Naxos discs have? I think it will.

So basically, Demon Hunter's third album blew me away. The sound quality and effects of the album added to the raw talent of these guys to create a freaking awesome album! Aaron Sprinkle did a GREAT job in creating this album with the band, and the bonus tracks on the special edition are definetely worth it, as well as the behind the scenes stuff. It's great to see the band behind closed doors, and it gives you a better idea of why they make the music they do. If you don't own this album and want something to satiate your need for heavy guitars, growling vocals and thundering bass and drums, look no further!

First off dude, i feel that you understand that paradoxes exist, and in that i am glad. But i fear that you dont understand exactly what may be a paradox. For example, "Christian Metal" is not a paradox because technically metal does not constitute that singing of Christ and God are in any way against the rules of metal. They do not co-exist in opposite directions, thus proving that Christian Metal is not a paradox. An example of a true paradox is an omnipitant (all powerful) God becoming vulnerable and weak for the sake of man and saving man only through His death and utter humility and vulnerability. Another one is that God became a human. God is a being whom is not bound by the limits of time or anything else. Humans, though, ARE bound by time, space, and the flesh. So, by a being whom is boundless becoming a being that is bound is a paradox.
Second off, what if i were to say, "the only good metal is metal that is about God." Wouldnt that be kinda arrogant? I love all metal, whether it speaks of God or not. But the point is, is that by excluding and judging bands on if they sing about God or not is a completely irrational decision that unnecessarily hurts yourself and others. For you are missing out on good talent and you are making judgments upon those whom you dont know and on something you probably know very very little about. In fact, most of the metal out there that doesnt talk about God talks about themselves and their own experiences. Is that not selfish? Are they not only making themselves idols for you to praise and even vainly worship (although, I do understand that that is not always the case)? But the second someone talks/sings about God,(someone OTHER than themselves) ye who shut off Christians all around are immediately offended and discard the talent and work of the band.
Well anyway, im not angry, so you know, just wanted to clear a couple things up with you.
The Triptych sounds good. I dont have any of their CD's yet, but they sound good. Live and Die for and like Christ.

Star wars vet, have you even listened to this cd? Listen to the tracks "Relenteless Intolerance","Not I","Undying","The Soldier's Song","The Science of Lies","Ribcage" and "Snap your fingers, snap your neck". This is metal! All growling lyrics, all deep, distorted cords, this is a great cd to workout to. Even the few light rock songs like "Thousand Apollogies" are awsome. This is a must cd for metal fans, of all variation. I'm 14 by the way, I just couldn't find my password.

I think this record is fantastic.

As for the previous poster, I know what you mean. I got this record a couple years ago, listened to it a couple times, liked it ok, but it didn't really hit me. For some reason I picked it up again this week and can't stop listening to it.

The most accessible pieces are the Gershwin preludes, especially the second one, which is one of the real highlights of the album.

The kirchner pieces are amazing, although much less tonal, and maybe a little offputting for people not inclined toward more modern, dissonant music. They are however, well worth spending some time listening to. I especially love the 2nd of the three kirchner compositions presented here.

I think all the musicians do a first rate job, and the quality of the recording is excellent as well.

My mother-in-law got me this CD about 2 Christmases ago. I'm sorry; I gave it another try today, and it still sounds like a lot of musical gibberish to me. I don't pretend to be a music critic, but my appreciation of music does range rather widely, from Classical to Country. However, this one just escapes me. I'll rate it a 4. I would rate it lower, but I'm open to the possibility that I'm just too dense to understand it. If this is the case, then I'm inviting anyone who follows my comment with theirs to set me straight.

Since the review below isn't very helpful with the particulars of this recording, I thought I'd try to be. "Made In America" features cellist Yo-Yo Ma performing the works of four American composers -- Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Charles Ives and Leon Kirchner. First on the disc is Bernstein's "Clarinet Sonata," which has been transcribed for piano and cello by Ma. As I was not familiar with Lenny the composer (aside from "West Side Story"), I was delighted to discover this refreshing, rocking and rhythmic recording by Ma and pianist Jeffrey Kahane. Since I love Bernstein's conducting, I will definitely keep an eye out for more CDs featuring his compositions as well. The second piece is Kirchner's "Triptych," a dark, haunting piece performed by only Ma in the first movement, and joined by violinist Lynn Chang for the second and third movements. Next is Gershwin's jazzy "Three Preludes," which was originally transcribed for violin and piano by Jascha Heifitz, and here has been done so for cello and piano by Ma. Ma is again accompanied by Kahane on this piece. Charles Ives' nostalgic "Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano" concludes this recording, with Ma joined by pianist Gilbert Kalish and violinist Roman Lefkowitz. In all, this is another stellar performance by one of today's greatest musicians in any genre.

Yo-Yo Ma is an inspirational cellist. He does great work and this CD is one amung many exanples of his talent. He is a wonderful musician and a role model for everyone.

Paul Halley is a gifted musician who brings fresh arrangements and interpretations to music grounded in classical traditions. On this CD he plays (improvises) various combinations of pipe organ, piano, and harpsichord in interesting ways that I found to be both entertaining and engaging of the emotions. While it is more "mood music" than classical masterpiece, the music nevertheless is rewarding, enjoyable, and modern in a sense that most "popular" music of today completely misses.

While on Christmas vacation I listened to the MPR program "Pipedreams"and immediately ordered Triptych! I have played it continually and have ordered other copies for friends. Nightwatch has been a favorite of mine for a long time...and Triptych is another amazing Halley CD .. I have also just purchased the new CD Untraveled Worlds...and this choral album is out of this world. The first track also features Jamey Hadded. More please Paul Halley

I was fortunate to be in New York at a "Nightwatch" service at the Cathedral of St.John the Divine...and was thrilled when Paul Halley's Nightwatch CD was issued. I've waited a long time for another organ album...and what a thrill to have not only an organ album, but combined with piano and harpsichord. This album has gorgeous melodies, some meditative..some with a jazz flavour, all beautifully performed. I only hope that I do not have to wait so long for the next CD. It would be wonderful to get three...one just organ...one just harpsichord....and one just piano(to make a pair with Pianosong).

Windsor, Ontario's hard-rocking trio released this project in 1999. Though they sound not unlike a heavier, slicker produced Stone Temple Pilots, TTP's 'Triptych' is nonetheless a decent rock album. Features 'Heaven Coming Down', 'Touch', 'The Messenger' & nine more.

Antoher good cd from Tea Party, it is not a masterpiece (five stars)
and not close to it (four stars) but it is a good cd.
The music is well written and the voice is great. This is one of the few bands of the 90's that I still like to listen to.

Im not sure if the Tea Party intended on making this album an almost commercial record or whether it just came naturally after simplifying things a little more.One thing still stand though and that is that this is a great album (in my view better than the edges of twilight).It still has the same flavour as the earlier albums but is a little simpler and easier to listen to,Its also good to hear the vocalists voice change a round a little more.The songs are not quite as long and alot more mellow but in this case its not a bad thing.If you are new to the Tea Party my advice would be buy this one and work your way down the list.

This is another great album from The Tea Party. Definately the most mellow of all their albums. It's obviously the most popular also since it has made the most $ and has had the most media play as of yet. I actually rarely listen to this album do to it's overplay on the radio but none the less it is an excellent piece of my music collection. GREAT BAND, GREAT MUSIC!

I really can't say enough good things about this band. Triptych is another very worthy effort, perhaps their most mature work. Tea Party is kind of like a modern version of the Doors. The talent is phenomenal. It's really uncanny, but lead singer/guitarist Jeff Martin looks, talks, and sings like Jim Morrison; the organist (or pianist/bassist) looks, talks, and plays like the Doors keyboardist Daniel Manczarek; and the drummer looks--well, at least talks, like the drummer for the Doors. But Tea Party is COMPLETELY original, let me stress this point. The music is known for its many-layered quality--alternative/industrial rock, folks, Eastern music, classical--all wrapped up in one. This album has a lot of great songs, including "Heaven Coming Down" and "Gone", the latter being one you play for your girlfriend and she tells you "oh, thats so beautiful" .

This record sounds and looks beautiful and at the same time has sell out all over it. Over Produced hits and a band wearing pretty cloths a world away from the rugged "Splendor Solis". But that's were the wonder comes from in this band. The constant change. Always changing, thus said the has some of thier best songs. "These Living Arms" is probly my favorite Tea Party song at times and show a great example of the emotion in Jeff Martin's voice. Recommended to fans, but also non-fans.

After listening to this music recently, I had a flashback to a poster I once saw from about this same time period, of a concert in Kansas, where the group, Kansas, was opening for Bloodrock. Keep in mind, this was before Kansas had even recorded their debut album. Wonder if they knew them in another life? Let's six-degrees it...
Something tells me "these" guys had run-ins in with "those" guys in the same part of the country all the way back to the Lewisville Pop festival in Texas back in 1969. Kerry Livgren from Kansas was a long time fan of another group that Bloodrock's previous producer, Terry Knight, was producing, called Grand Funk Railroad, and had come down interstate 35 from Topeka to attend that festival, at the same time Bloodrock was there, waiting in the wings to be signed by Mr. Knight. Kerry says to this day he was looking for a singer like GFR's singer to emulate. I think he was also looking for a hard-rocking band, with more progressive-jazz leanings to emulate, as well. All the while he was looking at GFR, I think he was also secretly eye-balling their little brother, Bloodrock. And it was that slight change from the gruff-vocals of Jim Rutledge to the silky ones of Warren ham, less of the Ritchie Blackmore-like riffing of Lee Pickens, and more of the organ and synth of Stevie Hill, that Kerry Livgren finally found the template for his group, Kansas. He was probably listening hours on an end to this album to get his ideas. You should as well.

If you're expecting to hear more of the original Bloodrock sound....you may be disappointed...but if you liked Stevie Hills incredibly flowing Hammond B-3...Eddie Grundys consistently solid and imaginative bass style and Nick Taylors always impressive guitar playing (from their efforts on the first 5 Bloodrock albums) as these 3 are the nucleus of all three albums included in this set....Rick Cobb plays only on the first album.....his style is immediately identifiable....Randy Reeder steps in on the 2nd album on drums....Warren Ham takes over the vocal spotlight from Jim Rutledge...offering a much cleaner sounding voice style...while also playing sax, flute and harmonica (he also toured with Carol King in the late 80's or early 90's and played excellent sax for her). The 3rd album was more along the lines of Hendrixes "Electric Ladyland...alot of guest musicians brought in for this effort...altho it maintains the Bloodrock sound found on all 3 albums..

The recording quality is excellent...hats off to Eddie Grundy for superb job....I like the material from all 3 albums...am a diehard Bloodrock fan.....I would say that this set places them further up into the realm of what "progressive rock" is all about....the earlier albums were more straight forward rock....aside from where Bloodrock 3 took more of a jazzy approach and revealed that these guys had some serious chops...

I would recommend this to anybody who ever liked Bloodrock....listen with an open mind and open heart....dont think you'll be disappointed at all.

Wish we could go higher than 5! For those who exceeding 'played out' their lifetime expectancy of 'Passage' and 'Whirlwind Tongues'- vinylwise - this one is for YOU! This was most definetly the mid-point crisis in their career, mostly because of the jazzy/blues tinged direction the remaining members of the original lineup
took with these early 70's releases. And yes they GOT a lot of critcism for it TOO! But So What? Sure they were original discovered by Grand fLunk head Svehali, Terry Knight, but ONE MARK FARNER HEADTRIP WAS ONE TOO TOO MANY ALREADY!!!!! And they finally relealized THAT too!!! According to a 1972 interview with Dennis Gray @ WXFM Chicago, the band-esp STEVIE NICK AND ED all UNAMINOUSLY and EMPHATICALLY stated that 'this version with NEW MEMBER WARREN HAM was a lot MORE COHESIVE than with the orig guys JAMES RUTLEDGE and LEE PICKENS.' 'It was also more self sufficient instead of being just rock and rollers, having EVERYONE else do things for the band , like in the past!' And as Mr. Hill (Stevie) disclosed in this interview, 'We're more compatible than ever with each other now.' 'We can bring ideas to each other and compromise within reason-we couldnt do THAT before!' Now if someone like Warren or Nick or Ed brings something in, we ALL can embellish the idea without having it left out.' As for the change in the 'new complex rhythm structure of the songs, Mr. Grundy (Ed), referring to 'Help Is On the Way', by stating,
'With a song like that being 13/8, the key here is for the people to see it visually.' 'Some of them cant get behind the beat, but if they SEE US, jumping around, then they CAN get into it.' 'Its like coming around to the 26th beat/phrase where it becomes an illusionary 4/4 time, which of course they can appreciate.' Points WELL taken, thanks guys!!!
This Bloodrock WAS different than the first one-the other two memebers just wanted to rip their shirts off in concert and play loud, louder, loudest...migraine to their own advantage! Not so with the others. (BTW, I dont know what happened to RUTLEGE, but PICKENS put together the LEE PICKENS BAND and that was VERY FULL OF ONE DIMENSIONAL DREARINESS)
So, if blame is to be PLACED on anyone for this 'new' direction it goes to mainstay ED GRUNDY and producer PETER GRANET who produced all of 'WHIRLWIND TONGUES.' The title track A-L-O-N-E is worth the price of admission to this double pak cd. Talk about progressive music with its jazz leanings toward the middle break of the song-WOW!!! Still cuts the mark some 30 years plus later!! The bluezy-ness of 'Sunday Song' w/ Warren Ham on Lead Vocals and harmonica definetly set a new precesdent for the group at this point just as well. And the phlange-like intro from guitarist NICK TAYLOR proceeds into a very off meter rhythm on 'Parallax' and the next track, 'Voices', rocks without shame! I saw the band in 1973 when 'Whirlwind' came out and they WERE JUST INCREDIBLE. I had also seen the old version both as support and headliners and, to be honest, WAS throughly UNIMPRESSED! Glad the label the boys were with, Capitol, supported them, especially at a time when a band who hailed from TEXAS, was doing prog music and werent out of ENGLAND New York or LA either! Though, still today, there are some who KNOW the band and cant appreciate this change-oh well! (BTW again, if anyone has the orig. album-I do, bassist ED GRUNDY was doing the STEVIE RAY look WELL BEFORE it became hip to do so!!! Goes to show you, even in that aspect, were ahead of what was going done) Again thanks Warren Stevie Ed and Nick (and of course drummists Rick Cobb and Randy Reeder)

Comparisons to the original Bloodrock aside, Triptych is, in a word, satisfying. The re-mastering on "Passage" and "Whirlwind Tongues" was done with care and both albums sound terrific on CD. Everything is clear and I can appreciate some of the finer points that didn't translate well onto vinyl. The 2 CD set comes with liner notes, courtesy of Steve Hill, offering some background info on "Unspoken Words" or "Bloodrock 8" as it's also known. It also includes a detailed list of credits, which is always a treat. It's nice to know who did what.
Spoken Words is produced by Ed Grundy as were the previous two albums. Listening to the three of them consecutively, Ed's strength as a producer is apparent with each album taking the music to greater heights. "Words" is, as Steve notes, "...an expansion of the writing style begun with Passage and Whirlwind." This is indeed the case, although "Words" also demonstrates what appears to be a new level of confidence and maturity in their playing.
The album overall has a distinct jazz flavor with a touch of blues and takes Bloodrock even further from its original heavy sound. The transformation, however, is an honest one. "Words" doesn't sound like a band trying to reinvent itself. It's a personal and finely crafted effort with plenty to enjoy. Steve Hill continues to explore the then emerging synth and electronic keyboard sounds, employing them tastefully throughout the album. Warren Ham also delivers. His vocals are strong as on the previous albums but he sacrifices the urgency of "Passage" and "Whirlwind" in favor of a more thoughtful and measured approach. The vocal arrangements are well defined and on target. As well, Warren offers some exquisite flute and saxophone work. This, along with Steve's tremendous keyboard work, creates a synergy that carries each song to a satisfying conclusion. Bill Ham doesn't take too many bows, but offers an understated but tasty guitar solo on "For The Ladies" and some down to earth licks on "Chicken Fried". With the steady rhythm of Ed Grundy on bass and Matt Betton on drums/percussion, "Unspoken Words" is without doubt as pleasing a swan song as any Bloodrock fan could hope for. Like the rest of Bloodrock's albums, the next listen is as good as the first.
Some fans won't be able to get past the original sound of Bloodrock to fully appreciate their growth or the impressive work of their last three albums. I suppose there's a case to be made for either continuing with their original sound or changing the band name to reflect such a marked change in direction. For whatever reasons, they carried on as Bloodrock. One can only admire them for taking a chance even if it ultimately failed them commercially. Nonetheless, I'm proud to add this to my CD collection. It was a long time coming but sure as hell worth the wait.
