Michael Franks was first introduced to me in 1986 by my girlfriend at the time. I immediately took to his style; cool, hip, understated, and yet incredibly powerful...just the way "true jazz" should be.

When I broke up with that girl, I felt as though my world was split in two. I would look at the things she left in my possession; a hairpin, a bracelet, and a copy of Michael Franks, "The Art of Tea". I'd look at the cover of that record (yes, vinyl) and it would almost mock me. I couldn't bring myself to listen to it because everytime I heard it, I thought of "that beautiful girl in my throw-away world"...such are the dramatics of a 21 year old without much life experience under his belt.

I have learned the "art of forgiveness" through the "Art of Tea". Yeah, there were times where I'd just to "forget to smile" but the more I listened to it, the more I began to realize what the true gift of my relationship was with that girl. She came into my life at just the right time to learn how to appreciate all of life...not just the good moments...not just the beautiful moments...but the sad and tragic moments, as well. And that's what I really hear Michael Franks singing about.

Yeah, life is dramatic but it doesn't mean we have to be involved with "cheap drama". We can learn to embrace the highs as well as the lows and you can if you make this recording one of the soundtracks to your life.

Why this music never really took off is beyond me. Sure I HATED it the first time I played it. The copy I had borrowed was ancient... A CD that probably cost over $30 when originally purchased, that had the smooth top and bottom as opposed to the ridged one, the CD, all metal, and no barcode whatsoever, made the packaging look completely different than that of now. It was sort of bewildering, seeing as at the time I was only 14. A year passed, and a friend of mine's father had passed away. He burned virtually every CD he had ever owned, which was most likely thousands. I took most if not all of his copied inventory...idiot me, there had to be hundreds more that i could have savored. But in the fold,I got Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin I, Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales, and by mistake, Michael Franks' Art of Tea. I remembered the old musty CD I had borrowed, which had fascinated, and bewildered me. I reluctantly slid it into the DVD player. It came to life, and I didn't get the same feeling. The feeling was something of a wash, in warm chords and vocals. Not to mention Claus Ogerman strings. Was I ever impressed. The song?? Nightmoves. It had the sound of a late night jazz club, filled with smoke and mirrors. It made me sit at attention, hungry for more. It faded, and I felt the urge to repeat it, only to let it run, into the humorous and sexy Eggplant. I just kept on listening, and more and more i was affected. The one that stood out from the crowd, was "St. Elmo's Fire" I loved the title and the beautiful time changes, and string arrangements. The song is of a young couple thinking of getting together, amid a box of weed, and a rocky past relationship. I loved hearing it and knew the feeling, a few years later. This CD served as a piece in the soundtrack to my growing up. This soundtrack is peppered with all types of music. The fun part of this soundtrack is that now at 18, I find myself coming back more and more and just being floored by what touched me so deeply in my teenaged years. To find Mr. Franks, in there not once but 3 or 4 times, is a very reassuring thing, seeing as his music struck a chord by being quirky and different. His vocals, wry and playful. His piano and guitar, sweeping and simple. The music is still so great and makes me look to the future as a bright and interesting thing. Thanks to the Art of Tea, i know the legend that is Michael Franks

this lasts. I listened to it nonstop when it came out - the 70's? - and it remained a fond memory, tucked away. a few years ago I picked up the CD and BOOM! top of the charts, all over again. Worth savoring again and again.

I first heard this album at the restaurant where I work. The owner was playing the CD over our PA system. I was impressed but apprehensive to say that I liked it. To me it sounded like a young guy doing a 70's retro album today because the way this album is recorded sounds so fresh. When I learned the background of this album, I let myself fall in love with it. It's an amazing album with amazing lyrics and even better music. It's a great listen from start to finish and should be in every album collection.

There are only a handful of albums I always listen to straight through. To me, that's the mark of a great album. The Art of Tea falls into this category. Every song is well-crafted and superbly played. This is definitely his best album (I would also highly recommend Sleeping Gypsy). Michael Franks is not for everyone, though. His music is thoughtful and sensitive, so if you like loud, edgy music, avoid this artist. Fans of Steely Dan, Sting, Pat Metheny, and bossa nova will probably enjoy Michael Franks.

I heard this CD playing as background music for an exhibition of over 200 tea-pots - charming, whimsical, clever ... perfect! It would be delightful background for a cuppa, or just for relaxed listening. I'm hoping someone will take the hint I've not-too-subtley dropped and present me with a copy for my birthday soon!!

Good music that works as background and is also interesting to listen to. And these are well-matched songs for enjoying tea--nice and relaxing. When I can't find the CD, it's usually in my wife's computer--she likes to work to this music.

Liberace was a great showman and entertainer. This double CD is the best record of his classic act and demonstrates what Liberace was all about. Although recorded in 1954 the sound quality is fine and many of the elements from that period remained part of Liberace's act over more than 30 years. Interestingly - he was not yet using "I'll Be Seeing You" as his exit music. If there is anything you like about Liberace - get this CD.
NB Amazon (on 2/5/04) was only listing the tracks on the second CD.

      Anyone looking to explore the early years of progressive music need look no farther then this fine 5CD box set. Representing the years 1969-1976 this set is one of the most well put together sets attempted by a major label to put into perspective it's own history. Housed in an oversized book format, the 120 page booklet enclosed features many rare photos of the Harvest rouster as well as an extensive overview.       The CD contains a number of outstanding tracks of piano genius Art Tatum. Especially the last four tracks, compositions of Tatum himself, are very good. Ain't Misbehavin' (track 5) shows the extraordinary technical abilities of Tatum. Shockingly good. I have never heard someone playing like that.

      I'm going to preface my glowing review by saying that I can completely understand why someone wouldn't like this album. And that's evidently a common reaction since I found this CD in the "dollar bin" in my local used record store about 10 years ago. The progressions are strange and initially off-putting to ears (like mine) that are conditioned by years of safe, formulaic pop music. My first reaction to Emily Bezar's unconventional style of music was not favorable. But I continued listening and as I did, I began to appreciate the unique beauty of it. That free-form, piano-heavy, pseudo-operatic style is water that Kate Bush and Tori Amos have dipped their toes into a few times over the years in their more adventurous work but Emily Bezar dives in head-first. I describe it as the soundtrack to a pleasant dream with a nightmare lurking just below the surface. It's at once comforting and disconcerting, an emotional dichotomy that I really enjoy.
      This album certainly isn't for everyone, but I absolutely love it.

      So I bought this cd based on the reviews and their glowing refferals and comparisons to Tori Amos. Well...please do yourself a favor and listen to a clip first. I was horrified at the complete and utter lack of anything even remotely resembling a melody. Now I'm used to Tori Amos who has a tendency to stray from the normal formulas of trendy music, so I am very open to new expressions, but this was not music. This was an abomination. I even played it for a few friends of mine to see if perhaps I was somehow jaded and even they begged me to turn it off after a few "songs". I read the lyrics enclosed before I listened to the music and I was very optimistic, her words were compelling and even a little haunting so imagine my shock when I listened to discover a screaching shrew who was apparently throwing rocks randomly at her piano keys. Oh and lets not leave out the fact that she seems to enjoy that great 80's atrocity the synthesizer.

      emily bezar is so deserving of great attention from critics, musicians, and naturally music buyers but it seems she is still so over looked. why is that? ms bezar has the most lovely voice one could ever hope to hear and lyrics which certainly rival all conventional pop artists. on top of that, she produces these spectacular albums which no one has ever heard of. while the obvious contemporary artists one might compare ms. bezar to would most likely be a kate bush or tori amos, bezar seems a little less eccentric and perhaps her musc veers away from the melodrama which often floods our more conventional wonders. her lyrics may close our eyes at first and place us under a wonderful trance only to open them in places we could've never imagined. ms. bezar gives excellent insight and her writing almost reminds me of an 18th or 19th century poet which one might read on a cool summer's afternoon. emily is the kind of poet that one might've read in an advanced english study while still in school but her work should definately not be confined to any classroom. through her grandmother's tea leaves, we all could very well find answers or ending which you'd never believe. ms bezar has made a believer out of me. try tracks grandmother's tea leaves or just like orestes just to see what i'm talking about.

      Emily Bezar's "Grandmother's Tea Leaves" will probably leave you breathless; that is, if you like stunning, pop-influenced art songs written and performed by a classically-trained operatic soprano. Bezar's powerful voice is clearly the centerpiece of this album, where most of the music is acoustic piano augmented with synthesizers and on one track, a string quartet. Her piano work could be compared (albeit on a superficial level) to Tori Amos, but Emily Bezar draws just as much from the classical tradition as from pop, throwing out chord progressions that sound more like late Debussy or Ravel than any modern singer/songwriter. At times, bits of atonality creep into her work, and she can walk a brilliantly thin line between harmonious tonality and chaos (the title track is a perfect example of this fragile equilibrium, as the almost musical theater-sounding lushness of the melody periodically teeters on insanity). Her voice sounds like a cross between Kate Bush's high register, Dawn Upshaw all over, and a bit of Tori Amos' drama; she was trained at Oberlin in both piano and voice, and it shows in both her flawless vocal and instrumental technique. (She wrote, sequenced, arranged and played on every track.) My personal favorites are the 11-minute "Just Like Orestes", where she uses a vocoder and makes fabulous leaps that stretch the bounds of tonality, and "Madame's Reverie", an equally long avant-garde pieces which ends the album in an almost ambient sonic collage. I should emphasize that while this is most certainly NOT for everyone, it may appeal to both fans of more abstract popular music and classical art song tradition, and is without a doubt one of the most original and beautiful releases of the last decade.
