Rare Earth Takes Me Back..........2007-03-13
I just heard the 20-plus minute version of 'Get Ready' for the 1st time in over 20 years, on XM radio (the Boneyard) and it brought back memories of that time, growing up in S.F. We used to try to dance to the entire song,(hard to at times because of the changes in tempo)and falling down from side-aches and laughing too much. The whole cd is some of the best music of its' time. I just went out and bought it! Happy Memories.....
A MUST BUY CD.......2007-01-12
this collection of their hits are excellent in quality and sound and also in variety. i was always looking for the long versions of GET READY, I KNOW I'M LOSING YOU, AND MA. this cd has it all. very well satisfied with my cd.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE CD's.......2007-01-05
I grew up loving Rare Earth. Wish I could get a teeshirt. lol. I sing along in the car....especially loving Get Ready..but all the songs are fabulous. It's also one of my favorites to listen to when in a romantic setting. It revs me up. I have alot of wonderful memories listening to this one.
Rare Earth 20th Century Masters=Best Of Rare Earth.......2006-12-28
First Thing That Surprised Me About This CD Was The Quality Of The Sound! The Detail Was Great. I Am Surprised By The Quality Of The Masters Series, I Also Have Donna Summers Greatest Hits In This Series And It Is Also Very Well Done.
But Back To Rare Earth: Having, Get Ready and Ma on The Same CD Is Awesome. I have Not Heard Either Song For Some Time And It Was Really Great. I Have Ribbon/Planar Tweeters And The Guitar Solo From Get Ready Just Sizzles....AMAZING! Oh Yes! I Had To Adjust The Volume Slightly...Upwards That Is And Its OK To Adjust The Subwoofer Also. Good Party CD!!!
GREAT CD.......2006-12-24
AN EXCELLENT COLLECTION, I DRIVE NIGHTS AND THIS ONE KEEPS ME UP!! ONLY DRUM SOLO AS GOOD AS INNA-GODDA-DA-VIDA BY IRON BUTTERFLY.

I purchased this for a couple songs and I was suprised about how many I have forgotten about. This is a great selection of songs and collection. Get it if you like any of the Rare Earth songs...
Get Ready!.......2006-06-23
With very little of the Rare Earth catolog in print, Rare Earth "The Collection", is without question the single best compilation available from the first caucasion rock group to be signed to Motown records by Berry Gordy. Rare Earth if only for a short time, delivered the goods that sent them to the top of the charts. Their take on "Get Ready", became a monster hit, originally tracking in at 21 minutes, like many a AOR cut of the late 60's and early 70's, it was trimmed down to the usual 4 minutes for 45 single release. Although you get the edited version on this cd, "Get Ready" remains one of the greatest rock covers of a soul hit to date. In case you forgot, these guys also had a touch of soul as well, as seen in their 1972 hit "I Just Want To Celebrate", which blended rock, soul and psychedelia to perfection. They cover Dave Mason's "Feelin Alright", like every other band of the day, but again, awesome guitar work on this version makes it one of the best takes of this classic ever waxed. If Joe Cocker had not had a hit record with his cover of the song, I would be willing to bet that this Rare Earth cover would have received tons of airplay, making it a hit. "Tobacco Road", is another standout along with "Magic Key" and "I'm Losing You". Lead vocalist and drummer Pete Rivera had a macho texture to his voice that is instantly recognized by anyone who listened to AOR in the early seventies. This compilation offers a generous 18 tracks for an attractive price, making it one of the best buys of classic rock and soul.

A message about the price of this CD.......2005-03-22
This CD is currently out of print. Apparently, Motown Records doesn't see the need to re-issue it. Therefore, the reason for the prices being so high is that the product is relatively scarce and you are buying from private sellers.
If you want to see this back in print at a reasonable price try writing Motown Records with your request. While you're at it you might want to request that "Get Ready", "Ecology" and the never issued on CD "One World" get equal treatments.
People that were into Rare Earth really dug them big time. They were some cool cats and they could really play. And while they weren't prolific songwriters, they may be the only band who could play your song better than you could.
Pete is still touring with a band called the "Classic Rock All-Stars" and sounds as good as ever.
Great Music, Wrong Price.......2005-03-15
Loved this when it came out. I had the lp and wore it out. Looking for it today caused severe shock because of price. Guess I can live without it.
Great album, crazy price.......2005-01-28
I have been hankering after this great album on CD for a long time now. Imagine my surprise to suddenly find out that it is available. Surprise turned to shock when I saw the price. Does the company that produces this CD not realise that are people all around the world (including South Africa where I live) who are very keen on this album? At this stage though, it is only the very wealthy that can afford it.
it just doesn't get any better than this.......2005-01-20
this is without a doubt the best live classic rock album of all time. one reviewer declared " nice to be with you" must be the $ 175.00 song as you can get all the other songs elsewhere. he stands corrected. the 23 minute plus live version of "get ready" is the grand prize on this disc.it stands alone at the summit of great live recorded songs. searched for years for this disc and it is well worth all the searching and the price
Live performances the best.......2005-01-08
There are some bands and performers who come accross much better live then their studio version, these include; The Stones, Grand Funk Railroad, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, some of Frank Zappa. Now, RARE EARTH (LIVE)is one of these bands, I had it in vinyl back in the 70's but lost it and as a result (as with Neil Young's "On The Beach" which is now available) I have been on a periodic search of this perticular album. Will somebody make this available, please.

Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06
Nowadays many classical musicians move to 'cross-overs' between Western classics to exotic works, and Chinese musicians and composers pioneer in cross-overs from Chinese music to Western.
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qin, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.
One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06
One of the most original CDs I've ever heard. This CD is full of incredible music. Yang XueFei plays with sensitivity, creativity and passion.
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.
Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26
I am a classical guitar student, and an over-the-top consumer. So I have a lot (many dozens) of classical guitar CDs. They are for the most part quite good, but they tend to blend. I might be able to distinguish Tennant's Rodrigo or Barrueco's Scarlatti, but too many guitarists play an awful lot of the same repetoire, and they play it quite similarly.
This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

The chant genre is glutted to epidemic proportions these days, with everyone from Buddhist nuns to Madonna's backup singers intoning Tibetan chants and Hindu kirtans. After six albums, Rasa continue to rise like perfumed smoke above the chanting hordes with their Eastern acoustronica and the enthralling singing of Kim Waters. The Rasa signatures are all there on Saffron Blue: Hans Christian creates a global fusion playing Swedish nyckleharpe, Indian sarangi, cello, electric bass, and synthesizers, orchestrating them across deep throbs of Indian percussion. But it all starts with Kim Waters, intoning Hindu mantras and bhajans in a voice that is both comforting and seductive. Christian builds her up in echoing choirs and canons that just seem to climb higher and higher. But there are some new wrinkles in the sari on Saffron Blue. They bring in a couple of other singers to duet with Waters, providing a contrast of rougher, more traditional sound with Vaiyasaki Das and Bairavesh Das. But even that nod toward tradition is bent through psychedelic echoes, subtle backwards effects, and deft electronic rhythms. Christian even gets a bit of funk slap bass in on the epic 10-minute trance of "Vande Krishna." Rasa don't make your street-corner Krishna sound, nor the easy grooves of ethno-techno chant albums. They've created a chilled-out global chant that speaks in a universal language. --John Diliberto
Album Description
"Devotional music has never sounded as serene and sensual as it does in the world of Rasa." -- John Diliberto, Echoes
Evokes a sense of passion with stunning performances by four guest vocalists that perfectly juxtapose Waters's exquisite voice and Christian's virtuosic arrangements. The sound of Rasa is unlike anything you've ever heard. Sensual vocals, soaring cello, and sarangi swirls weave a sacred tunic of devotional love songs in Bengali and Sanskrit.

Originally released in 1989, Blue Earth collects early Jayhawks demo recordings made between 1986 and 1989. While the band had produced a very limited run of their self-titled debut in 1986, this was the first mainstream release to provide a showcase for the songwriting tandem of Mark Olson and Gary Louris--a kind of Midwestern Lennon and McCartney who brought their bittersweet vocal harmonies and opaque lyrics to a nascent alt-country scene. Still rough around the edges, Blue Earth shows the young band very much in the thrall of the Byrds ("Five Cups of Coffee") and Gram Parsons in particular ("Commonplace Streets," "The Baltimore Sun," "Sioux City"). But also here are two impeccable songs that point the way forward: the sublime "Two Angels" and "Martin's Song." Both would resurface in more polished form on their masterful follow-up Hollywood Town Hall. This 2003 reissue includes three previously unreleased tracks--"Fingernail Moon," "Two Minute Pop Song," and "Nightshade"--that are effective examples of the band at this formative period. Sure, greater things were just over the horizon, but no serious Jayhawks fan will want to overlook Blue Earth. --Mark Walker
Album Description
2003 reissue of album originally released in 1989, includes three bonus tracks, 'Fingernail Moon', 'Two Minute Pop Song' & 'Nightshade'. Digipak. Restless.
Customer Reviews:
So different, so raw, so delightful.......2006-07-09
More rural-sounding than country rock, Olson owns the sound of this and their first album. Gary Louris certainly solidified the lineup and grew as a songwriter later on the two albums before Olson left, and even moreso after. This Remastered edition has a clearer sound, and the extra tracks are way welcome, as these fellas wrote, by their own admission, close to 80 songs that haven't ever seen the light of day, many that weren't even recorded in demo form. The raw quality here was never equalled.
Jayhawks were one of the real bands of their time.......2005-04-21
I'm not sure this album is the ideal place for someone to begin, but the Jayhawks with Mark Olsen are certainly the definitive manifestation of the band in my mind. Later albums were less "country rock" but still good music. The best of these, I think was "The sound of lies". Start with "Hollywood Town Hall" and "Tomorrow the Green Grass" if you want the classic stuff. If you want more rock, less country though, go for the later records. On "The Blue Earth", one track more than any other Jayhawks song really fills my spinnaker, and that is "Ain't no end". Never seems to get a mention but I think it's one of their most glorious songs.
Try it, if you never noticed it before you might discover something good.
Way better than people let on.......2005-01-19
This is THE BEST Jayhawks CD. After mark Left, the band was lightweight at best. His gutsy guitar and vocals are sorely missed. "Rainy Day Music" is the best of the bunch, but "The Blue Earth" is more honest and urgent. Forget all that crap about these "just being demos." Sometimes, the raw setting actually enhances the results. Such is the case here. If you like Gram Parsons, this is the best alt-country has generated in tribute to him.
underrated album.......2004-07-31
The rereleased, remastered Blue Earth by the Jayhawks is the seedling from which some amazing Americana grew. Originally released in 1989 by the Minneapolis label Twin/Tone, Blue Earth showcases a young band with great promise. Sure the songs are not as polished and well crafted as those on Hollywood Town Hall and later records. But there is a certain rustic charm to the cuts on this album. The listener can hear Olson and Louris search to find their voices in these simple country-styled compositions. Songs like Five Cups of Coffee and Will I Marry show the beginnings of fine craftsmanship. Enjoy this record for what it is: a small gift. There are no professional session players, no big name producer. This is a few guys from the upper midwest saving up some cash for studio time, playing together while drinking a few too many Grain Belt beers. Sounds like Blue Earth to me.
rainy day music and tomorrow the green grass are better.......2004-04-03
i loved tomorrow the green grass and have rainy day music in my cd player right now. this seems to be an effort to capitalize on the recent success of rainy day music by dragging some old stuff out and re-packaging it for new jayhawks fans. its just not their best effort.

OLD TIME ROCK & SOUL.......2005-12-21
RARE EARTH-GREATEST HITS AND RARE CLASSICS: Rare Earth was something of an oddity at Motown: an all white, self contained rock act that played with unadulterated soul. Starting with a gritty revamping of the Temptations' Smokey Robinson-sired classic GET READY and following up with a similarly reworked (I KNOW) I'M LOSING YOU (another Tempts hit), they were powered by the mighty vocal explosions of sticksman Peter Riviera and Gil Bridges' tasty woodwind accents. Worthy follow-ups included life-affirming anthem I JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE, HEY BIG BROTHER's hypnotic pulse, and the against type (and Bee Gees assisted) disco charter WARM RIDE, but even the non hits ("Rare Classics") deserve a spin. BIG JOHN IS MY NAME is a funky, chunky slab of fuzz tone/wah wah-injected psychedelia, while HUM ALONG AND DANCE invites you to do just that. At twenty cuts, GREATEST HITS is perhaps too much of a groovy thing for the uninitiated, but better too much Rare Earth than too little, I always say. RATING: FOUR BIG BEATS
For the casual fan, it's not bad!.......2003-06-29
However, with only the single versions of the group's hits, the album falls short.
A better purchase is "The Millennium Collection: The Best of Rare Earth". That one has the full-length renditions, including the 20-minute plus "Get Ready", a funk fan's treasure.
Rare Earth All But One (4 1/2 Stars).......2003-03-16
This covers Rare Earth very good all the Top Pop 90 Charters are on this. To make the Top Pop 100 this would need 'What'd I Say'. Well worth it if you can get your hands on it. Sound is Excellent. One Other drawback these are the single issues. If you had this and The Best of Rare Earth The Millennium Collection this would be all you would need for Rare Earth.

Customer Reviews:
A Gem by An Underrated Band.......2007-03-24
It's a shame that Rare Earth is seldom mentioned with other 70s classic rock bands, because this band rocked with the best of them. After the commercial failure of 1972's WILLIE REMEMBERS, the first Rare Earth album to include all original material, Motown paired the blue-eyed soul rockers with staff producer Norman Whitfield (The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight and The Pips), who wrote or co-wrote all five songs presented here. The end result is blazing rock/funk/soul that sticks with you long after the cd ends.
The 17-minute title track flies by due to Gil Bridge's emotional singing and Ray Monnette's slashing guitar chords. Whitfield's lyrical tribute to Ma is both humorous and poignant. Other highlights on this stellar album includes the stompin' "Big John Is My Name", the super-funky "Dance and Hum Along" and the sensual album closer "Come With Me", featuring romantic guitar playing and female moaning that would put Donna Summer to shame. The band's version of the r&b chestnut "Smiling Faces Sometimes" is okay, but it pales in comparison with the Undisputed Truth smash.
Rare Earth was a blue-eyed soul band that naturally blended musical styles to make its own statements. This is definitely a "don't miss" album!
Rare Earth "MA" CD.......2006-12-09
I heard this album when it first came out in the 70's and had not heard it again since. So I went looking for this long ago forgotten album and found it listed on Amazon. So i purchased it and it brought back all the memories.
This is a great album to listen to...go ahead, turn up the volume. A great follow up to their first album..Get Ready.

excellent recording quality seventies revisited LIKE A mellow BONG, ENGULFING...LA LA LAND RUSHES ,..WASHING THE SHORES OF MY BRAIN;iNWAVES. FOR SURE LIKE WATCHING COCKROACHES ON LOAN FROM RUSH SMILE WITH HAPPYFACE FROM THE CEILING MIRRORS
Who Said that white boys can't JUMP?.......2000-06-08
Check out this release and you will discover one of the best bands of the seventies. This rocking and soulful group from the Motown hitmaking stable had no equals at the time. Their turn on the classic "Smiling Faces Sometimes" is a treasure and the exceptionally long "Ma" (earlier recorded by The Temptations) is a tour de force.
These boys didn't need to take a backSTREET...OOPS! I meant "BACK SEAT" to anyone.
Best of Rock Funk.......2000-05-11
I first heard "Ma" on an LP in 1973. Considering the times I was blowed away. The title song was 17 mins of serious rock funk. The reverse side was also a great suprise with songs like Big John and Aint no words to this song. I did not really hear these songs until I bought this CD. Long live the sound of Rare Earth!

Earth Blue by Deuter.......2007-03-26
Excellent new work from Deuter...I have virtually every CD by Deuter and have added this one to my must listen category whenever I drive...as always his work soothes and rests the mind and helps me regain spiritual balance. I was particularly impressed by the use of violin with flageolet.

I can't decide which of these CDs I like better: Deuter's Wind & Mountain or Deuter's Earth Blue. When I was pregnant, I was looking for relaxing music to labor to and I found Deuter's music at Amazon.com. I am SOOOOO glad that I found his music, because now whenever I hear those soothing sounds I am immediately taken back to those precious first days with my beautiful daughter. We played these CDs non-stop the following days in the hospital while I recovered and when the doctor came in the room, he said to me, "This is the most relaxing hospital room I've ever been in. I don't want to leave!"
Lately I've taken to playing them in the car. I've found them to be a wonderful way to have an enjoyable relaxing trip. What a great way to fight stressful TRAFFIC! I can't recommend these CDs enough. I'm on Amazon tonight looking for more to add to my "Wish List."
Beautiful and very rich music.......2005-06-22
This is a beautifully crafted CD - like an intricate Pink Floyd album, the songs weave together into an amazing masterpiece. The tale of Earth Blue is so loving and perfect .. incredible atmospheric music - at times haunting and moving. Highly recommended.

I don't buy many CDs. I picked this one up without hearing any samples. I am very pleased with this purchase. If you enjoy Deuter's style (who couldn't?) then you're in for a treat.
Best Deuter Yet.......2004-08-12
This album is about motion and is a further development of his music from Sea & Silence. It is one of my favorite "being" music CD's. My collection includes a lot of Enya, Sarah Brightman, "fairy music" by Gary Stadler and Hemi Sync Metamusic (the one you shouldn't listen to while driving).
