Inspired by her travels to Asia, Suzanne Ciani returns with her 11th release and a collection of lilting, sentimental originals. The title track, "Turning," is a catchy, ethereal piece somewhere between a Madonna ballad and an Enya song as sung by Chyi-Yu. The rest of the album uses mostly acoustic tools to create a fine fabric of lyrical music that's akin to Secret Garden and Jim Brickman. At times Ciani recalls the soul of the Paul Winter Consort with oboe, flute, and fretless bass daintily jamming in swirling trade winds of improvisation. In my opinion, this is still one of John Mayall's best albums ever. He is called the master of British Blues and proves it on this live gig. The alto sax solos in several of the songs are wonderful. Get it and listen to it, is all I can say!

Another one left behind...........2007-03-14

Over the years i have left some great and classic LPS at 'close friends' homes. My friend Gloria was the earth mother for our 'band of gypsys'. Her apartment was the place to party and crash, and above all listen to those forbidden albums you could never hear at home. This and Aqualung, plus all the Moody Blues, released at that time, were played alot. Gloria was a Janis Joplin Fanatic. There was some great times and smoke had by all when the stereo was cranked up. From start to finish this was a great album, and from this we moved on to Mark-Almond's first LP. John Mayall talking about
chiky-chiky what had us laughing and the mouth percussion put us over the
top. But as much as i loved this Album back then, hearing it alone is not the same. Invite some friends over each of you play what you like and include this one, too. Fans of the newest tween-age hotty will not be impressed-the more fool them. Fans of the Blues, and those who did not know they were, caught on to John Mayall and never left him behind. Catch
him here and all that he has done. This would be a good start. I left this behind and it was my loss and her gain. The CD is in the mail for me as we speak.

I Saw Mayall Live at the Fillmore.......2006-08-26

But it was the show at the Fillmore West, and "Room To Move" knocked everyone off their feet. Well, they were already sitting on the floor (no chairs, then!). They say that if you remember the 60's, you weren't really there, but I think this show was SO memorable, it made it through the filter of time. You didn't have to be there. You can just buy this, and .... imagine.

Yes, it is THAT bad.......2007-06-08

Why, why is it so difficult to reissue the originals, in full? The music is wonderful--well, if you're a fan, you know that already--but the sound effects really are laughably bad. And as the sound effects were integral to the atmosphere of several tracks, it really does matter. Now, instead of the jungle sounds that accompanied the original track, you get to listen to some house sparrows chirping and flitting cheerfully from tree to tree, as if you were sailing toy boats in the park instead of slogging through the jungles of New Guinea. If the original sound effects are missing, minimal effort from RCA could have secured at least reasonably realistic substitutes. Instead, we get this pathetic garbage. Really a shame. That second star is only because the original music is so good.

It's ok, but much of it was cut from the original album. I have the complete set of 33 1/3 albums,there were three, the cd is ok but lacks the original sounds put on when recorded.Sounds were added that were not originally there.It can't compare to the original.

The quality of the digitally remastered music on this CD is far and above what I was expecting. The entire CD plays flawlessly without so much as a hint of unwanted background noise. My experience in purchasing this CD was very good. Shipment was almost immediate and delivery prompt. I can find absolutely nothing to complain about and am very happy with my purchase. Thanks a million.

Victory at Sea Volumes 1 and 2.......2006-12-14

What an utter disappointment. I've got the originals on vinyl, and this sad excuse for a reissue was not worth the money I spent. Most of the sound effects from the original have been left out, and the final 10-minute-plus piece, "Symphonic Scenario", bears not even a passing resemblance to the original. Don't waste your time and money.

John Hiatt was feeling strong after the success of 1987's masterstroke Bring the Family, so he rocked out a little more on the joyful, confident Slow Turning. His Louisiana quartet, the Goners, spearheaded by slide guitar innovator Sonny Landreth, made each hot tune ("Drive South," "Tennessee Plates") crack like a whip. Hiatt's rubbery soul singing, in turn, made each ballad ("Icy Blue Heart," "Is Anybody There?") tug at every available heartstring. The album became a bit of a hit factory for others, too--with Emmylou Harris, Suzy Bogguss, and Aaron Neville among the many who made Slow Turning's songs their own. I had worn out a tape cassette of this album years ago. And after having the mopey new boy guitar strummers played by my teen son in the house just had to get another copy. Great band. Lyrics that make me laugh out loud. Songs that tell stories clearly fiction and true to real adult life situations. And did I say great band?

I have over 500 albums/CDs (I realize there are people with thousands) and this is one of the five best that I own. It is unbelievably great.

A good follow-up to Hiatt's best-ever release.......2003-07-30

"Slow Turning" is Hiatt's first collaboration with Louisiana trio The Goners, which includes slide guitarist Sonny Landreth.
The arrangements are variously acoustic and electric, and several guest stars pop up: Former Eagles guitarist Bernie Leadon plays his National resonator guitar, then-session vocalist Ashley Cleveland and Dennis Locorriere of Dr Hook contributes backing vocals, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces' James Hooker sits in on organ.

Highlights include the tough rockers "Paper Thin" and "Tennessee Plates", the resigned, unsentimental ballad "Icy Blue Heart", the country-rock shuffle "Sometime Other Than Now", the tender love song "Feels Like Rain", and the excellent title track.

John Hiatt's 1987 album "Bring The Family" is without question his best ever, not least because he was able to work with his dream band (Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe).
But "Slow Turning" is no throwaway either. Not everything is equally memorable, sure, but it is still among Hiatt's better albums.

Rock and Roll For Grownups.......2003-06-22

If you want to explore John Hiatt -- and you should -- start here. If you're a fan without this CD, what in the world are you waiting for? It just doesn't get a whole lot better than this.

John Hiatt writes about real life. There are no sappy teenage love songs, but there is a great song, "Drive South," about two lovers with "heads in the clouds, just a little off-course" and one more chance to make it work.

"Trudy and Dave" aren't your average couple, but their descriptions (and the baby's) are laugh-out-loud funny. "Tennessee Plates" has a great, catchy guitar riff and an even better storyline: a lonely, desperate man; a female Elvis fan who's "been living in-between" and a car theft in Memphis.

"Georgia Rae" is a song about Hiatt's daughter and fits in well with everything else here. The title song is Hiatt's view of the world: unbowed, but realistic. "Is Anybody There?" will put chills down your spine with its mass choir effect and deep lyrics. "Feels Like Rain" paints a beautiful, languid picture of lovers in the Deep South and the music fits as perfectly as the lovers do.

If you like meaningful lyrics, melodies that linger in your head and you still don't have this CD, then you need to do something about it right now. You won't believe how great this is.

Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04

FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.

After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

Great sequel to 1.......2007-02-22

This is a great follow-up to State of Grace 1. The vocals are brilliant. Put this CD on after a day of shopping and errands and relax with a glass of wine, a cup of hot chocolate or your favorite coffee drink. I bought all of Paul Schwartz's productions without hesitation and have not been disappointed yet.

I've ordered this for several friends who were dealing with difficult situations in their lives. This beautiful music brings peace to whomever listens to it. One of my favorite CDs.

State of Grace II.......2007-02-07

This is a wonderful collection of music - even better than the first State of Grace CD. Even if you don't know Latin, the melodies of those pieces are very moving, as are the more modern English language songs. I absolutely love it!

State of Grace II not the "bang" that SG I was..........2006-08-05

I was so impressed with the quite forcefulness and spirituality of SG I that I couldnt wait for the 2nd release. After reviewing SG II, I am a bit disappointed personally. I love almost all of Paul Schwartz work, however this one just had the feeling of "trying too hard to be something that it was not." Not nearly as "powerful" without being overbearing as SG I was... but I'll take it for what it is... metaspiritual new-age relaxing music. Until next time I remain...

A Pleasant Recording.......2006-07-24

I really wanted Grace I instead of Grace II but I was able to pick this one up at a bargain close out price so I went ahead and aquired it. There are some highlights to this CD that are quite fullfilling but I would still recommend Grace I over this one.

Turning point is MOST DEF on point.......2006-10-30

Mario's last album was nice and catchy but very young at best. On Turning Point Mario takes the more grown up approach with not only his songs but his image. When "Let me love you" hit I couldn't believe how much range he had in his voice. When the album came I quickly got it. It's very unfortunate that Usher had the year he had because Mario is gonna be put in the "Trying to be like usher" list. This album has many high points such as "Let me love you" "Couldn't say no" "Call The Cops" "Nikes fresh out the box" and the rock filled "Here we go again". Mario is only 18 as he states and if he keeps improving his music like he did with this album there really won't be any more "like usher" talk.

Exactly where is Mario turning?.......2006-07-09

Mario has a lot to prove on his sophomore effort - transitioning from musical teeny-bopper-ish prodigy to sex-symbolic R&B/Soul entertainer; setting himself apart from the rest of today's male R&B singers (especially Usher); living up to the hype & the success of his smash hit single "Let Me Love You". Mario's only 18, yet he's got to accomplish all of the aforementioned tasks. While Mario's ambitiousness is written all over this album, "Turning Point" doesn't entirely succeed with flying colours.

Ironically, Mario is unquestionably at his best when he sticks to the script. The silky-smooth lead single "Let Me Love You" is definitely the best track on the entire album. With sweet, creative lyrics (courtesy of Ne-Yo & others), a smooth, laid-back beat & Mario's soulful vocals, this song oozes sex appeal without the sleaze, and is perfect for any occasion involving love. "Like Me Real Hard" is also another beautiful, soulful ballad where Mario empathizes for a female who is afraid of re-experiencing heartbreak, whilst riding over the guitar work that plays gently in the background. Other high-quality ballads like the sensuous "Directions", the musically raw "Nikes Fresh Out The Box" (warning - the "women-are-like-shoes" metaphor might turn some ladies off) & the soulful second single "How Could You" (which has him question how his ex-lover could be so unfaithful & deceitful to him) also keep the running smoothly.

Unfortunately, Mario's urge to turn up the "raunchy factor" ruins many tracks on this album. Take "Call The Cops" & "Shakedown" for example. While the beats on both tracks are great, the lyrics on both songs suck really bad ("Cause I got a little horny/ Lil' mama put it on me" & God knows how many clichés on both songs, respectively). As a matter of fact, Mario's attempt at glorifying himself in egotism & materialism on the latter track falls flat on its face (assuming that it has one!). Check this verse out, and you might see what I mean:

The only time Mario's...ahem..."gangsta"-esque persona works are on the tracks "Couldn't Say No" & "Boom". The former track tells the story of a man confessing to his ex-girlfriend about cheating on her "in between that week we split up", and Mario pulls off this track surprisingly well with the support of an introductory piano, some dark violins & a hot beat. The latter, on the other hand, is a straight up club banger with an absolutely hot beat, with Juvenile dropping a nice verse. Not only that, but Mario seems to be genuinely having fun with this track, whereas "Call The Cops" & "Shakedown" felt forced.

With two great tracks that manage to break away from his more successful ballads, you'd expect this album to turn out great...guess what? WE HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM! Both tracks seems to be awfully reminiscent of Usher's "Confessions (Part II)" & "Yeah", respectively. While "Boom" may be more anthemic than Usher's "Yeah", it simply has nowhere near as much energy, and lets face it... both Ludacris & Lil' Jon are a lot more energetic & generally more interesting than Juvenile. Whether his emulation of Usher on "Couldn't Say No" & "Boom" were intentional or not, the fact is that Usher's overpowering influence is present on both, which is rather disappointing.

That didn't seem to worry Mario though when he co-wrote album opener "18", an autobiographical track where Mario's telling niggas not to compare him to others. Strangely, Cassidy's less-than-average verse blows all of Mario's lines out of the water. Not only that, but Mario's unconvincing attempt at sounding "thuggish" on this track takes away from the song's already-weak feel.

Now all the tracks we have left to check up on are the R&B/Reggae ballad "Girl I Need", the hard-edged R&B/Rock track "Here I Go Again" & the "Let Me Love You" remix. The former track is a breezy summer tune where Mario describes the credentials his dream girl needs. Cham also drops by to drop a nice verse on the track. The only letdown to this song is the horrid chorus (honestly, how many times do we have to hear the ride-or-die cliché on a non-gangsta artist?).

At least it's not as bad as the third single "Here I Go Again", a lyrically clichéd R&B/Rock power ballad where Mario talks about repetitively returning to a bad relationship. I love the lyrics in the chorus, but there's not much else to it. As if Mario's hollow-hearted vocals are bad enough, you have screeching guitar riffs counteracting his usually smooth voice to make things even worse. Thankfully, "Turning Point" ends on a great note with the "Let Me Love You" remix. With a harder, more street-edged beat, along with a few nice verses from King of The South (T.I.) & King of The Lox (Jadakiss), this track is clearly a highlight, and definitely reaches the quality standard set by its original counterpart.

Altogether, "Turning Point" isn't too bad, but there are too many flaws to make this album truly great. To make things worse, Mario seems "artistically troubled". Whenever Mario tries breaking away from his true strength (ballads) by experimenting with other genres & ideas, he tends to fail miserably (excluding "Girl I Need"). However, by sticking to balladry, he leaves himself in a limited space for creativity, which is something most genres desperately need. Mario clearly has potential, but it must be safe to say that I expected better from someone so talented. THREE STARS!!

what turning point?...Nikes fresh out the box.......2006-06-28

I copied (thank God) the contents of this album from my sister. "Turning Point" is completely thoughtless; most of the songs are so cliche' filled with corny hip-hop lyrics that could not even charm a cat. The three stars are for 3 good songs: "let me love you"(the hit single), "Girl I Need" (a fairly nice reggae/hip-hop tune), and THE best song on this entire wretched album which has hit single potential, "Nike's Fresh out the box." His smooth vocals work well with the R&B rythmn of this track.
I absolutely hate it! when artists have a "hit single" with the purpose of manipulating individuals into purchasing their record, when the record itself sucks! skip this if you can or simply download "Nikes' Fresh out the box."

What a Turning Point.......2006-05-07

What can i say? I really like Mario and I loved his FIRST cd but I can't say the same for this one. Maybe it was the production. Maybe I need to listen to it again
I Liked a total of 2 songs from that cd and thats not enough for me.
I will give Mario credit, I was able to see him sing live and to be a newbee, he did a very good job. I was able to keep me very entertained with is voice and almost good moves.
I think he is trying to transition his self for a boy to a man, so i will give him the benefit of the doubt for that.

it was alright.......2006-04-04

For this to be his second album it wasn't that bad. The CD starts off with him singing about he just turned 18 featuring Cassidy. At first I thought the song sounded weird but it grew on me and I kind of started to like it. Other songs I thought were good on the album were "How Could You", "Here I Go Again"-I just love the beat, "Like Me Real Hard"-the best song on the album, love it, and "Let Me Love You Remix"-this one is way better than the original. There were other songs on the album that were okay but those were my favorite. There is this song called "Nikes Fresh Out the Box". At first I liked this song a lot because of the beat and it kind of had that 1970s feel to it. But when I closely listened to the lyrics he is actually comparing a pair of sneaks to a girl. What a complete turn off and its rather corny. Definately could have done without that track. But overall this CD wasn't that bad. I really don't recommend it to add to your R&B section because it wasn't all that. It was just average.

Mike Reid is one of those talented singer/songwriter people who somehow never became a household name across America. It wasn't for lack of talent- this album is proof enough of his abilities, with flowing melodies and a smooth voice. Thanks for the great music, Mike.

ALMOST EVERY SONG ON THIS CD IS WONDERFUL!! I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO THIS CD FOR OVER 10 YEARS, AND IT NEVER GETS OLD.
THE LYRICS ARE VERY STRONG AND VERY TOUCHING--EVERYONE CAN RELATE TO SEVERAL OF THE SONGS. THE MUSIC BRINGS OUT EMOTION IN EVERY SONG---SOME SAD, SOME LOVING, SOME STRONG, SOME ENERGETIC.

Turning for Home with Mike Reid.......2004-03-25

I've had this CD for a long time and it's still one of my favorites. He is truly gifted to be able to tella story with his words, and the beautiful voice to sing with. I am very selective when buying music, with a collection started with 45's in the early 60's. If music like his was promoted like some of those with much less talent,the music industry would have no problems. Unfortunately, they continue promoting singers who appear to be clones of each other. Mike Reid is exceptionally unique.

The Inimitable Mike Reid.......2004-02-28

I don't know what catagory you'd place this music in - my designation would be "country folk." He has a most enjoyable voice and style. I've loved it since "Twilight Town" in 1992. If he had ten CDs, I'd probably buy them all.

A couple of keepers.......2007-03-11

A pleasant enough folk CD, with two exceptionally good songs: the title track, Turning Toward the Morning, and a great version of the traditional Three Score and Ten. Most of the songs are rather on the sad side, which isn't my first preference, but to be expected from folk music. Still, the CD has a nice sound to it, and the two songs I mentioned are definitely keepers. Of course, someone with more of a taste for softer, sadder songs, will enjoy this album even more.

This is a very nice collection of folk and other songs performed by, Ann Mayo Muir, Ed Trickett and Gordon Bok.

They draw upon their various backgrounds to excellent effect on most of the cuts on this disc, although there are a couple of cuts I don't prefer (and I hope I won't prejudice anyone by saying #8 and #9).

If you like robust, folk-y, music, this is a very nice collection.

Beautiful!.......2001-01-09

This recording contains come of the most beautiful harmonies I have ever heard. The songs are traditonal - some familiar, some not so, but the renditions are clear and thoughtfully produced. Some are mostly vocal, some instrumental, and others a delightful combination. Behind these recordings there is a distinct love of the music; some are joyful, some heartbreaking. You will not be disappointed by this record, and you are guaranteed to run the full gamut of emotions while listening.

these short piano pieces are simple, but absolutely not boring. gurdjieff and de hartmann wrote some of the most thoughtful and sincere music you'll ever hear. I found this CD over a year ago and it's one I return to over and over again.

Cacaphonic Harmonious.......2001-07-15

Truly an exposition of beautiful "objective" listening. This music will not put you to sleep. Transitions are abrupt and engaging throughout the score's entirity. I play the music whenever I find myself searching for something to do or am bored. This music will consume all negativity and poke the listner to begin a stirring sensation in their own mentation. The music is not sophisticated or eligant by no means, but has a way about it which will intrige one to listen again and again.

I am a jazz DJ who has a list of about 20 favorite female jazz vocalists, but could not find male vocalists who turned me on. If your tastes lean towards the Mel Torme, Mark Murphy types, you will really like this guy. He is clearly a jazz singer, yet has so much soul. I love his ability to re-arrange a familiar song into something fantastically new...ie: Alone Again Naturally. His phrasing is great, his voice has that element of roughness that i love in a man. i am so sick of the pretty boy sinatra-clones. His voice is like a horn. The backup musicians on this CD are also top-notch. I could go on and on. I am so happy to have found a man that puts his vulnerability into his singing...
