Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans is an 11-song journey bridging the gap between ancient and contemporary history, tradition and modern instrumentation. While it is impossible to fully realize such scope on a single disc, Sacred Spirit makes the choice to represent all indigenous Americans rather than become mired in the potentially divisive bog of politics and tribal allegiance. All but two melodies are entirely traditional, bringing together flute, drums, and vocals with a cello and keyboard wash. This marriage is most effective on the lovely bowing of "The Cradlesong," and the looping electro-acoustic beauty of "Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity." Elsewhere, synthetic elements are overwhelming, detracting from a song's essence, as with the spongy nervosity of "Elevation." An uneven offering, Sacred Spirit doesn't quite live up to its promise. A better choice is Earthbeat's Tribal Waters. --Paige La Grone

This Cd actually makes my mind wander back in time and wonder what it was like living as and indian. The CD is a must for any music lover!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-08

I had heard mixed reviews of this CD, but I found it to be amazing.

3 out of 5 stars Very interesting. Worth buying........2007-04-12

There are a few tracks that are really great on this CD. I expected more Native America chanting/singing and less electronic music. That being said, I really like the CD. It does strike a spiritual chord during some of the tracks. There are reviews here that look like they belong in a magazine. I will just say that if you like World Music or New Age music (and they ARE different), I suspect this is a very worthwhile CD to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars THE best CD i've bought in a long long time!!!!.......2007-04-09

I was watching one of Youtube's clip of the Grand Canyon's Skywalk that opened up last year on an Indian reservation. The clip has this most beautiful trance-like mellow groove song on it and i HAD to find out what or who it was by. Thanks to the helpful people who posted a reply, i was able to find and obtain this CD. The song on that Youtube clip was called [ Ly-O-Lay Ale Loya (Circle Dance)]. As the title of this comment says, it IS the best CD i've bought in a VERY a long time. In fact i'm listening to it now as i'm writing this.
The combination of Trance, Newage, Lounge and tranquil music is enough to take you away. I wanna say it's like a combination of Deep Forest meets Jam and Spoon meets Enigma. I just can't put it into better words than the other people who has posted the same comments about this CD. I HIGHLY recommend buying this and enjoying it! I just can't seem to get tire of it!

5 out of 5 stars Soothing Native Music.......2007-03-30

I am a fan of infusion between tribal beat and modern music. This collection is wonderful infusion between tribal beat and enchanting vocal blended with modern instrumental sound. If you like Deep Forest you will definitely love this. It is not like Enigma or Magna Canta but it has it's own charm. I am going to buy all Sacred Spirit volumes after hearing this.

Given the multi-million-copy selling success of Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans, its follow-up, Sacred Spirit II is bound to have a built-in audience. Like its predecessor, the collection mixes chant and song with dance beats and electronic instrumentation. While tracks such as "Dela Dela" and "Yane-Heja-Hee" meld these elements most effectively, the overall effect of the synthesized sound is heavily over the top and distracting from the gentle melodies and heartfelt cries of Native music at its best. A prime example is the tender and lovely female vocal on "May You Walk in Sunshine," obscured by overly aggressive accompaniment. A more solid and aesthetically pleasing choice for the genre is Prophecy: A Native American Collection, which achieves a finer balance of modern and ancient. --Paige La Grone

If you enjoyed Sacred Spirit I, you will love this one too! I can't stop listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing With Sacred Spirits II.......2007-05-07

A new type of music for the soul. It's wonderful. It's beautiful. It's exciting. And worth listening to. It's Native American chants and dances
done with some of the most amazing music I've ever heard.

The music has a rhythmic beat that's very catchy, but very soothing. I enjoyed it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another excellent CD from the same producers.......2007-04-22

Continuing from the first great CD, Sacred Spirit II brings you more of the great mix of Native American music with modern grooves and beats.
I highly recommend this CD as well !!!

4 out of 5 stars Good but not excellent as Vol 1.......2007-01-26

I expected more of this volume since the first one is real extraordinary, and seems to be hard to beat. However is good enough to have it. Good production and most of the tracks are in the same mood of the first volume.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!.......2007-01-15

We bought this CD while visiting Arizona last summer. We loved it so much that we have purchased this copy through Amazon for a friend as a Christmas Gift. He loves it too! This is a great combination of spiritual, Native music and chants along with "pop" melodies. I normally play inspirational CD's....lots of Native flute music, and meditation CD's but this one (and also Sacred Spirit Vol. 1) I can play when I have guests over and they do not fall asleep!
Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Chant to Travel.......2007-03-09

I first heard this CD when my friend Wendy brought it during a visit to Oregon. We chanted the whole way to the Bonneville Spa and Hotsprings. I liked it so much I borrowed it for a week and finally got my own. Ragani has the most lovely voice and the instrumentals are fulland luscious.
Thank you Ragani!

5 out of 5 stars Best of Both Worlds truly is a fine blend of traditional Indian chants and modern recording .......2006-06-25

What immediately strikes me about this recording is Ragani's sincere devotion to her guru and to the divine. This is evidenced in the opening mantra, the Akhanda Prayer, a beautiful prayer to the Guru. Though I am not a musician, each chant on this CD seems to me to be well recorded and more importantly these chants are infused with Ragani's sincerity as a bhakta. I feel as though I am listening to a seasoned yogini when I listen to this fine collection of chants.
Especially appealing to me about these chants is the shift from a slow repetition of the Name to an accelerated and ecstatic repetition. The gradual acceleration has the effect of locking my mind's attention onto the mantra so that by the time the chant ends, my mind is subdued and I experience the peace brought about by the chant. In other words, when the chant is moving very quickly, there is less room for thoughts (other than the Name) to creep in. By the time the chant speeds up the Name takes hold and my mind begins to settle down. My particular favorites are Sita Ram and Shiva Hara. Whereas Sita Ram is intense, by contrast Shiva Hara is light and uplifting. In addition, the chants on this CD are all in call in response style which makes participation in the chants very easy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly beautiful. Nice change of pace from other kirtan .......2005-02-01

I thought no other kirtan style music could even compare to Krishna Das (whom I love dearly), but Ragani's voice is so beautiful. This CD is enchanting so much so that I cannot seem to tire of listening.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!!.......2005-01-10

Great CD!!! I play it everyday commute to work. Would highly recommend it to anyone looking for Kirtan music.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisitely Beautiful.......2004-11-28

This is one of the best New Age/Kirtan CDs of recent years. The final track, "Rama Rama" is one of the most achingly beautiful songs I've ever heard. It's as if you're listening to Sita, the legendary heroine of the epic Ramayana, actually calling for her husband Rama, who's half a world away. Ragani is one of the most inspired artists in the new genre of Western kirtan music. I play this CD often.

Album Description

"Sacred World Chants," the long-awaited follow-up to the extremely popular "Prayer, A Multicultural Journey of Spirit, is a rich cross-cultural musical journey featuring mantras from the world's major spiritual paths - Jewish, Islamic, Christian, Hindu, Tibetan Buddhist, Native American and African.

This stunning collection includes chants from around the world, performed by today's leading chant masters and backed by Dean Evenson's soaring flutes and resonant keyboards.

"This collection of chants culled from previous releases on different labels is wide in scope, embracing spiritual and cultural traditions from all over the world, including Hindu, Zulu, Buddhist, Judaic, Yoruban, Christian, Islamic, and American Indian influences. "Nali," a field recording by John St. John, is a heart-thumping example of the African tribal connection with nature and harvest time. The Zulu women's voices are deeply passionate and inspiring. The Sufi "Allaho Akbar" is a sparse yet riveting plea to the divine. "Dudley's Song," named for executive producer Dudley Evenson, brings to life a chant "caught" by Lummi tribal elder Cha-das-ska-dum. The variety of traditions captured here will make Sacred World Chants a special treasure for world-music fans. The purpose of these chants is clearly stated in the liner notes: "A few years ago when we were entertaining Tibetan monks, we asked the chant master what it is about their chanting that makes it healing. His unwavering reply was, 'Intention.'" The intention Soundings of the Planet brings to this album, as the label has all its albums for 25 years, is world peace." - NEW AGE RETAILER "Sounds From the Ground Up" by Mara Applebaum - October 2004

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My current favorite CD.......2005-02-18

After Soundings released "Prayer", I was waiting for a follow-up and this is it. I play this almost every night before bed because the chants are soothing and inspiring. It helps me sleep and wake-up in a good mood. This CD is a rich cross-cultural musical journey featuring mantras from the world's major spiritual paths and some of today's top "chant" artists. I love the selections by Deva Premal, Snatam Kaur, Manish Vyas & Dina Awwad, and Gina Sala. If you like chant/kirtan music, you will not be disappointed with this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great listening music.......2006-07-11

The Gordons know how to relax you. Great listening pleasure with a light Native American touch. This particular CD spans their music career from there previous CD's plus 3 new ones.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Years of Sacred Musical Vision.......2002-12-27

What a gift ! I feel incredibly fortunate to have been given the gift of the Gordon's 20th anniversary compilation album Sacred Drum Visions from my wife for the holidays. It is trully an exceptional collection and likely my favorite of the all the Gordon's releases thus far, as it contains many of the best tracks from their incredible highly-acclaimed native music series including Sacred Earth Drums, Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine as well as 3 magnificent new tracks. The Gordon brothers music has really evolved in a number of unique ways over the years. And though their music stems from a native American influence it artfully combines sounds and instumentation from many indigenous cultures from around the world, making their sound trully universal; and this clearly shines through in this compilation. Perhaps the best thing about this particular release is the perfectly sequenced flow of each track into the next creating a sonic journey that reaches back in time and trancends the mundane world taking the listener on a journey of the Spirit and the Imagination. The 3 new tracks are really exceptional gems. I particularly like Faithkeeper Part I, which opens the CD and Light of the Canyon, the jewel within the center of these tracks. This CD is far more than a retrospective of the Gordon's amazing body of work, it is a powerful, transformative and healing musical journey of the heart. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A sweeping experience!.......2002-08-04

My favorite of her albums so far, Sura adds addictive rhythms to Chloe Goodchild's spiritually evocative voice. The main theme of this album is Hinduism, though other relgious traditions are touched upon as well. Her voice is low, open and expansive. The lyrics are repetitive, addictive, and often (not always) in foreign language. The songs vary from exciting invocations of Hindu spiritual beings to gentler, sleepier, more haunting almost "lament-style" songs influenced by other parts of the world. The sound quality is strong and professional.

This is definitely "experiencial music" - music that makes you feel transported to a dessert with the hot winds whipping through your hair, and ancient temples crumbling in the sand. It's very powerful in that way. But it's definitely not for people who prefer "songs" - as in, clear lyrics and clear melodies.

I recommend it highly for people who like to be swept away in sound and spirit!

5 out of 5 stars astonishing.......2001-10-24

Having been alternately entranced and disappointed by Chloe's previous CD 'Devi' I was not prepare for the loveliness of every track on this recording. The strength of her voice is astounding, as is its purity. 'Om Shiva'is powerful, and the exquisite, indian-ornamented settings of Hildegarde are wonderful - how well Hildegarde's compositions stand up to a melismatic eastern treatment. In particular 'Alilo' is hauntingly beautiful, and defies pinning down to one mood, apart from a shifting ecstasy.

Particularly effective is the use of instrumentation - do I detect the influence of John Tavener in the handbell like tones of 'Alilo'? I originally bought this remarkable lady's CD because of her performance in Tavener's Mary of Egypt - in the time since then, her skills have sharpened (in the Tavener piece, she sounds exhausted by the end)but her voice is still as earthy and ethereal, as deep and as pure as ever.
Truly amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Sura--a great CD for meditation.......2001-03-25

When I first reviewed this CD, I was not fond of many of the tracks--the only one I like was Shiva Om. But now, as I go back to listen to the other tracks, I find myself more and more drawn to it. Self Inside Self is simple, but haunting. Gayatri Mantra is also an excellent song for meditation. I would highly recommend this CD for anyone getting into meditation...

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually inspirational.......2000-08-09

Chloe has gathered spiritual chants and songs from all religions and performs them really nicely. She has a very good voice and had taken the time to put together some nice arrangements, musically.

My favorite cut is the first, Om Shiva, a Hindu chant performed as leader/response. I chant along with the response as part of my spiritual practice and find it very satisfying. It's also nicer sounding than the rough, untrained chanters on other "chant" CDs, and since I'm a singer, I guess I prefer her more trained, sweeter voice.

The other cuts I like are Self Inside Self which everyone maybe ought to chant in front of the mirror each day. Very uplifting. And Remember Me, which is set to the aria music of "When I Am Laid..." by Henri Purcell (Dido and Aeneas). There is also a Hildegard de Bingen chant, an Eastern European lullaby chant, and a medieval chant. Whatever you want is here. Enjoy.

And yes, it is great as accompanyment to yoga and dance. I use it for these as well. In fact, my introduction to this CD was in a Movement Therapy Group.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and evocative.......1999-06-14

In this beautiful follow-up to her previous CD ("Devi"), Goodchild delivers once again with her amazing and powerful voice artistry. The selection "Gayatri Mantra" alone is worth the price of this CD. I sincerely hope Goodchild is already working on her NEXT CD even as I write this! She's phenomenal.

Album Description

The Music of Armenia focuses much of its six volumes on the sacred and folk music traditions of the Eastern Armenians. It was recorded mostly within the modern republic. The only exception was the folk music of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, which was recorded inside that strife-torn area in Azerbaijan. The Music of Armenia, as substantial as it is, in fact began as a musical detour. The intrepid New Zealand composer, David Parsons, who has previously produced The Music of Cambodia and The Music of Vietnam was working on another project for Celestial Harmonies entitled, The Music of Islam, when Celestial Harmonies' president, Eckart Rahn, asked if he had heard the monastic choirs of Armenia. Parsons set off to investigate: once there, he says, "I was struck by the extremely high level of development in all the music I was hearing. For me, personally, this was the most outstanding traditional music I had heard."

The recent explosion of interest in Gregorian Chant and in the mystical music of various, mostly Eastern European composers, suggests that there is something in modern Western life that has listeners searching for the ancient, or, perhaps timeless sounds, of sacred music. The sacred choral music heard on The Music of Armenia, Volume One: Sacred Choral Music certainly fits the bill.

5 out of 5 stars I WISH I WAS RELIGIOUS...AND ARMENIAN!.......2003-02-25

This is an amazing CD. Totally totally amazing. It's as though Palestrina took a vacation in Iran. I listen to this CD whenever I need spine-tingling artistic inspiration. My very favorite selection is #8, Sirt im Sasani, or "My Heart is Trembling." Prepare for a full kundalini awakening of the musical variety. Highly recommended. Buy it today. The other CDs in this series are top-notch too, but nothing compares to this one. Spread the word...

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful and a source of delight.......1998-09-15

If you like choral music this album will blow your mind out. If you thought that Palastrina or Tallis were good, just wait until you hear Komitas (esp. #1) or Petrosian's the Armenian Church.

This album takes you through 1700 years of music, from the start of the church as official in 301 (or 312 if you're an historian)through to very recent works. This is a living tradition which is unfortunately not well knowm in the west. I hope this album - and its companions - will generate interest in this musical tradition.

If you want to take a risk and buy something you're not quite sure of (and we all do it - and make the odd mistake) - BUY this and you will never regret it. It is Wonderful.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A gateway drug, nothing more, nothing less. .......2007-03-11

To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.

This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying destructions of the universality of the works and the intentions of the artist behind it, I am willing to give this collection another chance, since classical music is somewhere between Arabic and wine in degree of unmanageability. It also helps that all the tunes are familiar to almost every one of us, and the fact that the artists' intentions probably got killed by the hundreds of different conductors trying to convey their personal interpretation of the works.

What I am saying is that this CD can be to classical music enthusiast what 'absolute rock' can be to a rock enthusiast, or to someone slightly interested, with no conceptual frames of where to start the search for knowledge. "Best Classics 100" offers nothing except a selection of melodies where there's bound to be one for every taste, but where the album feeling, the entirety or completeness intended by the composer, or conductor, or performer is completely lost in a trade-off made with variety.

The collection is attempted organised by giving each CD a different theme, supposedly to describe the mood of the music, and the labeller succeeds only to a limited extent as we move from themes such as 'uplifting' and 'relaxing' towards 'golden'. I wonder what that golden feeling constitutes. It apparently is to be found in, amongst others, "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde", and in "My Heart Will Go On"?

But no matter how I try to describe this CD it will sound worse than it actually is. This because to me it works as a great reference to which I can always turn with my classical music questions. Was it Schumann or Schubert who were the sad one? Of all the -inis, which where which again? Who composed "O Mio Babbino Caro"? The starting point for finding out if you belong to the romantic or the renascence wing, lies within this assemblage, if you look with your ears.

If you feel that classical music is something you like, and you'd like to learn more about it, this is a way to get started. If used together with a book on classical music, or wikipedia, it can be a gateway drug, leading you towards the great different experiences to be found within the different genres of classical music, and within the different periods ranging from the 12th century, maybe even earlier, towards yesterdays and tomorrows spectacular compositions of melodies that conveys a feeling, a state of mind with much more precision than any other musical genre. Expect a fairly alright collection of classical prunes, and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Selection, But..........2005-04-21

...The Audio Quality is really not great. I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great! 100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good. I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
I then played the CD's through my home stereo, with the same results. I plugged in my SHURE E5c headphones and the sound was soft, uninviting, lacking punch, with significant backgound noise (not just from the headphones), which was especially distracting when the music would get softer. I have heard much of the music before, and it was much more dynamic, entertaining, this recording seems too flat.
The music selection is ok, but I was hoping for some more interesting selections from the vast classical genre.
Overall, not that great of a recording, but many might not notice the difference, so if you are new to classical or aren't like an audiophile, get this album because it's a great overview of pop-culture classical, and it's pretty inexpensive.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have classical music set!.......2005-01-06

Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away!
