2 out of 5 stars Okay computing, but watch out for major design flaw!.......2006-12-06

The Mac mini works just fine. It's fast, it's quiet, and space-efficient. The one huge problem -- and maybe it's only been a problem for this family! -- is the fan located in the base of the unit. Spill even the smallest amount of coffee, water, or whatever near the unit, and whoosh, up it goes into your computer. Then, nothing. It is broken. Beware.

2 out of 5 stars ok for basic computing.......2006-03-01

Macs have had a reputation of great reliability and a great stabile operating system. However the mac mini is very limited. If you are someone who needs a computer for web browseing and
emailing then i guess a Mac mini is for you.But computers these days have become than just emailing tools, they play high performance games, edit video and photos, play video. And unfortunately the Mac hardware cannot keep up. The mini offers a 32 mb video card but most pc systems can offer from 256 to 512
mb high performance video cards for graphic intense aplications like games. The proccessor 1.25 Ghz but high end systems can reach upto 3.0+ Ghz of processing power, basic memory is 256-512 but with a good pc you can expand up to 4 Gigs of ram. Apple admits themselves that the mini cannot compete with medium to high end systems. The mini retails around five hundred dollars but that is the basic system without add ons like monitor and mouse, keyboard, and lets not forget the options like dvd burner which you can only get from apple. These extras can put this system past 1000 dollars and now you have to ask yourselves is it really worth it? sure xp has its faults but the newer versions such as xp pro and xp media center are rock solid. And lets look at compatibility as well , how many programs can you get for a Mac compared to the vast library of games and applications you can get for a PC.upgrading and servicing is also cheaper for a pc. I can go on but i think i have made my point. Most people should just go for a midline pc system, hey i guess its not as flashy as a mac but it gets the job done economically.

5 out of 5 stars First time Apple User-.......2006-02-28

I have been a PC user for all my life... For once I decided to change to Apple and Mac OS X to see what was all the fuzz about. My brother in law has an iBook and is a huge Apple fan.

This little machine is great, I am writing my review on it and works like a wonder, no matter how hard I try to crash the little monster it is very hard, the worst it does is slow down. Once I had 15 Safari windows open and 10 Quicktime Movies at the same time this thing didn't even blink. I am doing very fine with the bundled iLife'05 software and free software available in http://coolosxapps.net or other websites.

Things to consider yahoo.com music won't work on Mac OS X -( Not that it ever worked well on my Pentium 4 PC 1GB Ram running Windows XP )-, and a whole other bunch of movies won't run even if you install the third party plugins because as far as I know Mac OS X still can't manage Windows Media Player Rights, my Quicktime now can play .wmv, .wma, .avi, and of-course .mpg and .mov files but no movies with rights. MTV music is not giving support to Mac users as a lot of other websites. A pity Mac OS X is a very good Platform.

If you want peer to peer file exchange over the Internet try Limewire works like a beauty. And as mentioned in other reviews please consider the extra ram it will make your Mini work better, as a matter of fact I consider mandatory 1GB of ram in Mac and PC if not you life is bound to be running in slow motion.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't work with monitor.......2005-10-17

I bought one of these recently at an Apple Store, where I've gone a couple times due to some problems with my iPod. I battled with a fanatic Apple employee and finally got the Mac mini and brought it home. I tried to use it with a Hitachi 19" CRT and nothing ever showed up on the screen, no matter how many times I restarted both the computer and the monitor. I checked the connection several times. It looks like it just wasn't made to work with my monitor, so I will be returning the mac mini and probably moving on to purchasing a Dell, given all the problems that the iMacs seem to be having. But more than that, it's just that bad taste in my mouth that Apple sometimes leaves me with. I love what they are going for (in theory). I love the software design. But in the end, to buy a product for $500 and take it home and have it essentially do nothing seems so essentially Apple that I've decided to join the common man part of the computing world. I also looked on Apple's support site and it looked like a lot of people were having problems with their monitors not recognizing the mac mini or sometimes just going blank at periodic intervals. So just beware if you are using the mac mini with a non-mac display. I would look on the Apple support site to see what people are saying before you purchase. I also would like to have someone come up with a word that describes that feeling that you get when you power up an Apple product and have it fail utterly.

Otherwise, great product (in theory). Apple, you almost had me!

5 out of 5 stars Very happy with this computer. .......2005-09-27

This computer is completely silent. I leave it on all the time and even in my quiet room I can't hear it. It is attractive and doesn't take up any desk space at all.

Be sure to buy the bigger hard drive, if you get the 40GB as I did you won't have much space available. I think with all the stuff it comes loaded with there is only 23GB or so free when you get it. It comes with Quicken which is a great piece of software!

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Tempermental, but worthwhile.......2007-04-22

I have had this unit for a couple of years now and am pleased with it. I recently switch out my CF and SD cards for high speed cards and it made a significant difference in speed. Also I bought software to do maintenance, clean the registry and to find and delete temporary and unused files en masse. What a difference this made. I was getting ready to put down a couple hundred dollars on an MP3 player, but decided to try my PDA first. I am so glad I did. Idownloaded software that had more features than the media player it came with and love the sound quality, capacity and feature. I just found an 8gig high speed card and will try this out next. Over 2 years this PDA continues to improve.

2 out of 5 stars Only if you have time to spend.......2007-02-10

After two years using this IPAQ and long experience with PDA's I can surely say that it is one of the most disappointing products I've ever bought. The 2755 has excellent features but needs time to think what to do and where to go....Imagine you are in your car and you receive an urgent call from your boss asking for a phone number, it is urgent. You open your 2755 and while you wait to get to the first screen you can tell your boss to play a complete tennis set.
I had to erase software from my handheld to make it faster. The 1 gb card didn't help much. I'm moving to an Axim and hope for better luck.

2 out of 5 stars NIce - when it works.......2006-12-05

Turns itself on for no reason at times -- very frustrating when you go to use it and find the battery is dead. Soft reset is something you will do regularly -- especially three to five times after synchronization. I would definitely not buy an HP handheld again at this point.

And, yes, I upgraded software, firmware, and synchronization software. Nothing changed. And, in hopes a new operating system and other upgrades would fix the problems, I let the one year warranty expire. That was a mistake. My previous Palm device was wholly reliable.

5 out of 5 stars perfect travel companion.......2006-05-21

I bought one of these about six or seven months ago and liked it so well right away that I bought one for my partner a few months later. We literally live on the road at present and our iPAQs are the most essential item of all. They hold our library of ebooks, our family photo album, our music, writing, check our email, voice recorder, we keep track of dates, appointments, plane and bus reservations and a million other things. They really do it all and the wi fi capability is terrific. I covered the revolution in Nepal on my iPAQ when it was impossible to get anywhere to use the internet. I'd need a suitcase full of stuff and equipment to replace it!

5 out of 5 stars Better than every Palm.......2006-03-27

This is the third PDA I've owned and couldn't be happier with my choice. My first one was a Zire 73. Never coldnt manage it. SEcond one was an IPAQ 2410. Supreme. but a needed more memory and faster processor

HP IPAQ 2755 got everything I need.

I,m using a 512 MB FC for aditional programs and a 2 GB SD card for my data. and is very amazing all the info, music pictures an information you can carry on your pocket.

Also a had installed lots of programs from resco....like Radio, Music players, all you can imagine, and this device manage them so fast and well that you cant believe it.

Since I have it i got my office in my pocket.

Also with WIFI you can send and receive emails, sailing on internet and chating trought MSN

The battery lasts a decent amount of time. But you have to be carefull cause the battery drain using WIFI or Blue tooth... but its not a big problem if you turn off the Bluetooth and WiFi feature when you turn it off, and buy a mobil charge.

Very good Product, im plenty satisfied.

U.S. Highball is one of the first underground masterpieces in American music. Partch's work explores what, decades later, would be called a 'subculture' - the hoboes, who traveled across the U.S. in search of work or new experience, defying social conventions and the strictures of civilized society. The recording on this CD is not U.S. Highball in any of Partch's (three) versions, but an arrangement for voice and string quartet made for Kronos in 1997 by Ben Johnston, a composer who studied and worked with Partch and with whose own music Kronos has had a long and fruitful relationship. Slipcase. Nonesuch. 2003.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Rebuttal and Praise.......2007-01-06

There have been comments and concerns with this CD in saying that it may not be in keeping with the original composition. What has been egregiously overlooked in previous complaints is the simple fact that Harry Partch was never actually in keeping with his OWN original compositions. Though most people think of an ensemble of Harry Partch instruments and performers as the true rendition of this piece, it must be realized that it first came out simply for microtonal guitar and voice--Harry traveled around to colleges and did solo performances of it! It then took on several various iterations, expanding up to, at one point, ten individual performers. Harry Partch was constantly reworking this piece, and, had he never died, would probably still be rearranging it. This particular arrangement was a commission written specifically for the Kronos Quartet, and was arranged by a former protege of Partch's. It remains as true as possible to Partch's original notes, styles and intentions. Seeing how faithfully this has been converted to string quartet is truly inspiring.

The Kronos Quartet does an absolutely incredible job managing all of the subtleties of this work. Microtonality is not easy!

I highly highly recommend this CD.

3 out of 5 stars small reservations, but that's only because I'm biased.......2006-08-03

I cringe a little whenEVER I see a Partch transcripted for something other than his original instrumentation. I think that's because Partch's work at creating his own music and theatre for that music was so creative and unique that I never tire of it and want to see newer recordings using those wonderful music machines just so I know that Partch's ideas won't fade in time and remain only in some select recordings.

I'm still getting over Kronos taking my favorite Partch piece, Barstow, and stringifying it on Howl, USA, but in all honesty Kronos does justice to Partch. It shouldn't seem too suprising--Kronos has made their reputation by doing string quartet work that doesn't always sounds like string quartet. Since they've reinvented the string quartet, it would seem feasible that they could reinvent Partch FOR string quartet.

I'm not wholly buying into it yet, but I also know that far worse could have been done to Partch in this recording, so I credit Kronos for the efforts they took to keep the spirit of the original composition alive. A central connection here seems to be the common desire to make truly American music that doesn't just glom off of European traditions. In doing this, Partch set to music notes of his own hobo trip, to put American experience to music. Though Kronos will always in the end sound a little too polished for the raw nature of Partch's work, I thank them for keeping his name relevant in contemporary music.

    Thank you, Kronos.

5 out of 5 stars Plentiful on vinyl.......2005-11-24

If you dont want to pay outrageous prices for the rare cd edition this album, it is available widely on lp on the many second hand vinyl web shops. These days it is simple to have it transferred to cd. All the technology is out there!!

5 out of 5 stars This soundtrack is wonderful!.......2005-10-17

So of all the soundtracks I've ever heard for movies, this one is definitely the best of them all. The music for starters is absolutely gorgeous. "Climbing the Downs" is truly inspirational, from the way it starts out with a lone French horn solo then gradually adds cellos and crescendoes...it's really moving and so gorgeous.

The use of instruments is really great in this piece. Use of alto and bass flute really adds depth to the music that other soundtracks hardly ever have. "Keehar's Theme", how it's longer here than in the movie, is REALLY great. The alto saxophone in that theme is perfect and ideal, it really fits the mood. Love the adding of oboe and flute in the extended of that song, it's so jovial and light.

It's a truly amazing CD...this music is FABULOUS. Like, it fits with everything in the movie. "Bright Eyes" totally brings tears to your eyes, and there's such a mournful oboe solo that's really touching and unique. Fiver's Vision, I never realized until I got this CD that the reason that scene always would scare me was not just the scene itself but because the music behind it created SUCH atmosphere...that is seriously some of the scariest music I've ever heard, it lends to such atmosphere in the movie and adds to it so much.

The Efrafan theme is very fitting...excellent drums, love the beginning with the brass and how it builds.

I reccomend this CD very, VERY highly to ALL Watership fans. Yes, it is expensive, but believe me...it is well worth it. I have no regrets on getting it, I am simply enthralled by this music, by the brilliance of this composer, by the amazing use of instruments in this to create probably the greatest soundtrack I've ever heard. I reccomment it very highly, because it is truly an amazing experience as a musician and as a very long-time Watership Down fan to own this soundtrack. Five stars and then some!

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best soundtrack in the world ever!.......2004-09-03

Forget 'Lord of the Rings', ignore 'Titanic', disremember '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
The soundtrack to the wonderful Watership Down animated film, is one of the greatest soundtracks, if not the greatest original soundtrack ever composed.

Featuring music from Malcolm Williamson - the Queen's official composer (who sadly passed away last year), Angela Morley, and Mike Batt, this is some of the most moving and touching music you will ever hear in a film.

At every point in the film, the music superlatively captures the mood, and affects the viewer.
Even the much-teased Bright Eyes theme, composed by Mike Batt, and sung in an ambient-dream style by Art Garfunkel (which was a British Number One for a number of weeks), never fails to leave most people without a dry eye.

Drama, fear, sadness, death, life, hope - all of these and much much more are wonderfully portrayed through the many different songs. And at the same time, a common motif - now eternally associated with Watership Down and rabbits - plays through the soundtrack. Sheer Brilliance!

This soundtrack is proof that film-makers don't have to follow the over-used formula of just mixing some chart rubbish with a couple of pedestrian original scores.

Although now hard to find, this soundtrack is an absolute must if you appreciate music that moves you...

5 out of 5 stars A must for any "Watership" fan!.......1998-09-30

This release includes the haunting "Bright Eyes," though it is the album cut and not the version was topped the charts in England in 1979 (the single version has an extra verse, and a more uptempo mix). The album cut is the same version heard in the movie.

I've waited years for this CD issue and I'm very glad that it's finally out. My only complaints are minor: The packaging was poorly executed (the artwork looks like a bad scan of the original LP cover) and the liner notes are a bit sparse. I would also have liked it if they had included extra cuts, like the single version of "Bright Eyes," or the three other songs that Mike Batt composed for the film that weren't used. However, the mastering and overall sound quality on the disc are excellent. Angela Morley's soundtrack stands very much on it's own as a beautiful symphonic work.

It is a must for any "Watership" fan.

5 out of 5 stars Watership Down, a modern classic.......1998-09-08

The Watership Down original soundtrack album is a masterful blend of lyrical beauty, suspense, excitement and triumph that accurately and movingly captures the spirit of the motion picture and the original book. Assembling a soundtrack album is never easy--music is usually clipped into pieces to be sandwiched into the cinematic sequences--but the tracks were intelligently and sensitively arranged to provide a concert-like effect. The melodies are intelligent and deeply felt, and the orchestral arrangement was strangely appropriate--strong when it needed to be but disarmingly simplistic in keeping with the pastoral setting of the film. One of my all time favorite albums when I am in a thoughtful mood.
