No Blue Thing
Editorial Reviews

One-hit wonders. Every musical genre has them, and New Age keyboardist/guitarist Ray Lynch fits the qualifications. In the late 1980s Lynch's "Celestial Soda Pop," a bouncy, percolating instrumental, was embraced as one of the earliest radio hits of a then-fledgling New Age radio format (later to become smooth jazz). As a result, the Texas-born Lynch enjoyed a huge spike in popularity and sales that, ultimately, were not commensurate with his skills as a composer. Deep Breakfast, which contains "Celestial Soda Pop," achieved gold-record status, and eventually Windham Hill snapped up Lynch's entire catalog, eyeing an apparent New Age juggernaut in the making. No Blue Thing followed Deep Breakfast, and earned a nod from Billboard as the instrumental album of 1990. Yet its modest selections (light, Vangelis-like keyboards but with a floral touch and minor classical accents, particularly violin) confirm Lynch is basically a New Age noodler who possesses good intentions but not that many good ideas. "The True Spirit of Mom and Dad" is Lynch's showcase cut on this 40-minute disc and, despite its cheery effervescence and the claim that Lynch spent 1,200 hours in the studio on this one eight-minute piece, it will strike mainstream ears as something akin to average television theme music. --Terry Wood

Toe-tappin'.......2007-01-09
My daughter, Kim turned me on to Ray Lynch and his unique music in the late eighties. 'No Blue Thing' was the first of his albums I bought, and remains one of my favorites today. The title song never fails to set my toes a-tappin' to its happy, lilting beat, and that is merely the beginning. 'Homeward At Last' continues the free spirited tempo as 'Blue', while 'Here and Never Found' is almost symphonic in its mood. As with many of Mr. Lynch's compositions, those on this album are creatively crafted, ever changing and at times, unexpected. The listener is held in a state of anticipation, never sure what lies around the next corner but always pleasantly surprised. The album concludes with 'The True Spirit of Mom and Dad', a satisfying blend of quiet grandeur and playfully echoing strains all pulled together in a pleasing climax. Give your ears and soul a treat-buy this album.
Probably My Favorite.......2005-12-16
No Blue Thing is probably my favorite Ray Lynch recording. I have several of his recordings and owned them for a number of years. I first heard Ray Lynch many years ago on an public radio station. Celestial Popcorn received some air time and the two occurrences were enough to attract a buy from me.
My kids went to sleep to his music for years. Now I do.
These are open, airy tunes that play well several times. Lynch's music makes for good background music when I'm working or trying to focus on other things. It doesn't impose itself on my psyche, but is there with its calming sound and interesting point and counterpoint.
Another Ray Lynch classic. Excellent!.......2005-06-16
With Deep Breakfast having already become one of my favorite albums of all time, I was excited to see the release of No Blue Thing, purchasing the CD the very day it was released. I was apprehensive, wondering how Lynch could possibly create anything comparable to his previous masterpiece. When the title track began playing, I was more than impressed, feeling as if I had been reunited with an old friend. This artist conveys many moods in his music, from carefree joy and playfulness to a deep, contemplative reverence toward life. He again captures a wide scope of human emotions on NBT, something he seems gifted at. Ray Lynch music is unique, plain and simple. You won't find it sounding like anything else though if you enjoy Jarre, Oldfield or Tangerine Dream, you'll be pleased. I particularly like Lynch's clever and melodic use of electronic sequences and NBT surprised me with beautiful and more complex rhythms in this regard. If you enjoy clean, crisp sound and a soundstage extending beyond your speakers, this CD will delight you too, not to mention solid deep bass notes that at higher volumes might challenge even the best loudspeakers. Like Deep Breakfast, sound quality is impeccable, if not more dynamic and translucent. I found myself getting lost in this new and wonderful collection of songs, forgetting all else as the Mr. Lynch takes me on another soothing and relaxing musical journey. The tunes are playful (Homeward At Last & No Blue Thing), spiritual, (Drifted In A Deeper Land,) and often inspiring and uplifting, (The True Spirit Of Mom & Dad.) He once again proves he is a master craftsman at integrating traditional and electronic instruments, however the music on NBT is more polished and confident, suggesting that he continues to mature as a composer and musician. NBT is a splendid follow-up to Deep Breakfast, and will delight nearly all music lovers. Listen to the samples and order this CD - you won't be disappointed! HH
No Blue Thing.......2005-03-31
I purchased my first copy of "No Blue Thing" on a recommendation of a friend in 1996. The second time in 1998 and the third in 2002. "Evenings, Yes" is one of my all time favorite pieces of music. That song touched my soul the first time I heard it in a manner that it had not been reached before. By following the interwoven melody lines through the sea of emotion I heard the emotion and feeling pouring out onto my ears.
Love it.......2004-05-23
I have to admit the music is much the same as the first CD but I still love it and I am so glad I bought it.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent performer.......2007-03-09
This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.
A unique project.......2006-11-23
Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Customer Reviews:
Bits of the Bard you have probably missed!!.......1999-10-02
This CD is a treat loaded with surprises. Program notes are well written and entertaining (by a Shakespearean expert?). Hear "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" in it's entirety, enjoy Hamlet retold in a jazzy piece that even features a little scat singing, and revel in the creative arrangement of "Tonight" (it features a bit of dialogue, some musical borrowings from Prokofiev, and more to create a multi-dimensional experience of this piece.) I highly recommend this diverse, interesting, stimulating and intriguing CD. I really liked it, in case you haven't guessed.
PS: The singing is good, too.
Excellent variety of choices!.......1998-09-10
This CD gives you an educational background on just how many different musical adaptations of Shakespearean works have been produced! The songs range from familiar tunes of Cole Porter like "Too Darn Hot" to obscure performances in Yale's swimming pool for "Fear No More." The notes by Bert Fink are hilarious and move along with the songs smoothly.

Magnificent.......2002-02-21
If you have ever been, or think you might ever be, a fan of the music of George Gershwin, opera, musical theatre, jazz, powerful, triumphant singing by trained African-American voices, orchestral music, historical/cultural documents layered in innovative artistry, hearing the next generation of Opera Grand Dammes and Divos before the sun also rises on their already international careers...all of this and more is to be found on this CD. One might say I'm a little biased, as my ex-fiancee/best friend (Angela Brown, Soprano) and a number of friends of mine in the business are on this CD. But you don't have to know them to love them when they sound like this.
Angela, who has one of the most powerful voices in the industry (she recently covered AIDA at the Met for an all of a sudden slightly nervous and miraculously recovered from illness [upon hearing Angela warm up on stage] Debra Voigt), sings PORGY's "My Man's Gone Now" about as well as I've ever heard her--which is by definition (trust me) better than most of the sopranos of the last century, BAR NONE...the master Greg Baker, who has done Amonasaro and John The Baptist at the Met to incredibly deserved acclaim, performs excerpts from his signatue role Crown and Porgy at the top of his game...the rich tones of Marquita Lister, whose debut as Bess in the Goetz Friedrich production of PORGY in the Theatre Des Westens of Berlin in 1993 was a shot to all established divas heard 'round the world (now singing with her on that stage at that time was FUN, let me tell you), sounds like a ringy, milk chocolate/black velvet version of the milky, white velvet Rene Fleming...Diva Harolyn Blackwell, not to be outdone, rings and soars in everything she does...
This CD would be a treat even without the introduction of BLUE MONDAY, the DNA of PORGY AND BESS work that gives us a window into the creative mind of George Gershwin, and the embryonic existence of PORGY AND BESS itself. BLUE MONDAY gives us much of the thematic material and revolutionary artistic ideas that led to Gershwin triumphantly blurring the lines separating grand Musical Theatre in the tradition of Jerome Kern (think SHOWBOAT) from the high art of Wagnerian/Verdian/Russian Opera with PORGY; influencing everyone from Richard Rogers to Leonard Bernstein to Stephen Sondheim in American composition thereafter. BLUE MONDAY, in its simple, deceptive beauty (with parts sung immaculately by Angela and Marquita) gives you the clue to just how powerfully Gershwin planned to shake up the world with the debut of PORGY and BESS in 1935--and did.
And can you even imagine how it feels to hear the voice of Cab Calloway, linking every conceivable strand of High African-American music, American musical theatre, American opera and Jazz of the 20th century together with every word he says? Could there have been a better Sportin' Life? (Gershwin actually wrote the part of Sportin' Life in PORGY both for and based on the personality and artistry of Calloway--the friend of Ellington and biggest influence on the music and personality of Dizzy Gillespie--while he played in Harlem's Cotton Club in the 1930's.)
But this CD is not a Museum piece made for music academics or an excuse for me and others in the business to party with singer friends (I don't need this good an excuse for that!). This is absolutely beautiful music that will sweeten your home and soul on the first hearing.
This could easily be like Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE for all enthusiasts of good music who (smartly) don't lay claim to liking, being an "expert" of or sticking to one particular style. Just as anyone who kind of likes any of the jazz they've heard loves KIND OF BLUE, if you have ever heard strong American music sung with powerful American voices over a tight orchestra, but had too much fun listening to it to call it "opera", you will love this CD.

Customer Reviews:
But that's the POINT, Mr. Wood!.......2007-07-26
Ray Lynch is not COMPETEING...and the music reflects this. If his music had as its goal "impressing music critics" as opposed to the spiritual and meditative aims he clearly has, THEN you could better define his efforts as mediocre. Lynch is a longtime follower of Bhagavan Adi Da (not that I have more than a general idea what that implies), and to say he 'succeeded' by having a 'hit' and implying he failed by not following up on it completely misses what the composer is actually trying to do.
One would think a music critic would consider such things.
I liked this better than Deep Breakfast in a way, and consider both to be spiritual music...there's not much here for the body, or for the social self, rather it's personal and meditative. Lynch invites us to that contemplative place where simple music, beautifully played, is exactly apropos. There are moments, moods, on which the genius of the composer and the ego of the virtuoso are intrusions.
If Mr. Lynch's compositional skills are not prodigous, all the more I appreciate his hard work to produce such beautiful music.
Celestial Bubble Gum for the Spirit.......2006-02-01
While serious critic decry Mr. Lynch's work as "average", its popularity should tell you that these cheerful melodies are hitting the right note with many listeners. Does music always have to be complex or deep to be good? A roaring pop music industry should tell anyone that it doesn't.
So Ray Lynch doesn't write complex music. That's not a bad thing . "No Blue Thing" is listenable, especially the best piece on the album "The True Spirit of Mom and Dad." The two voices, high violin and deep synthesizer seem to represent the character of two loving and influential parents, traveling through happy and serious times. My favorite, however, is "Evenings, Yes" which has a meditative oboe solo and is very pretty. It'ssomething to listen to when doing yoga or relaxing. A pleasant album for fans of synthesizer New Age.
Fantastic Voyage.......2001-10-16
This is far and away Ray Lynch's crowning achievement. The formula is more or less a carbon copy of his 1986 hit DEEP BREAKFAST, only the ideas are fleshed out, the melodies are stronger and more mature, and the balance between accoustic and synthesized is much more 50/50, creating an emotional depth the earlier release could never achieve. The sound is also richer, owing to the advancements in MIDI technology over three years no doubt. While DEEP BREAKFAST is great for a lazy Summer day, this is a teriffic album to play in mid-October, as the leaves are changing colors and life begins to settle down. Some critics may dismiss his music as lightweight (the venerable Terry Wood seems to be one of them), but regardless, the music is timeless and from Lynch's heart. And frankly, with the music he creates and the genre he's a part of, it's a little strange to apply the term "one-hit wonder." But anyway. . .
"No Blue Thing" is essentially a sister to "Rhythm In The Pews" and, to an extent, "Celestial Soda Pop," right down to the melodic percussion that was sort of a trademark at this point. The accoustic/electronic interplay first comes to play in "Clouds Below Your Knees," with the achingly beautiful cello line, answered by flute later on. These songs are also more complex than on DEEP BREAKFAST, as "Here & Never Found" and the pensive "Drifted In A Deeper Land" showcase. "Homeward At Last" is another synthesizer showcase, the bouncy piano line creating a real sense of forward motion. (That's a good title, that one.) "Evenings, Yes" is the accoustic counterpart-- a piece written for guitar, oboe, flute, violin, and cello, that is just striking in its beauty. This song alone helps prove that Lynch is not just a simple New Age artist. And finally, there's "The True Spirit Of Mom and Dad," the album's centerpiece. While it may be a bit over the top to some ears, personally, I think it's Lynch's greatest composition. Very well done. If you're looking for essential Ray Lynch (though I'll admit, that would be kind of strange), get DEEP BREAKFAST first, then explore the wonders of NO BLUE THING.
Of Spirit and the Universe.......2001-06-12
I find that my emotional self is instantly accessed. I cry, am filled with a wonderful joy and all the feelings in between. Whenever I listen to Ray Lynch's music I am moved into a spiritual place that is non-dimentional, a universal place of great beauty.
terry wood is a horrible music critic.......2001-05-29
Reading the reviews Mr. Wood has given Ray Lynch horrified me enough to at least defend what I regard as the greatest composer of my time. Phrases such as "one hit wonder" and general descriptions of Ray's genius as average made for tv music leads me to believe Terry, though I am sure an accomplished music critic, does not know the first thing about timeless, quality music. I suspect Mr. wood is content in his gutless, mainstream wonderland of nsync, yanni and ANYTHING not daring to be differeny and creative. Ray Lynch is a thousand times the man and talent Terry Wood will ever be.

Customer Reviews:
Feyer's CD is a must have.......2007-01-28
So I purchase my Nano and then easily transfer much of my "must have" music library to the 8 Mega Black Nano. The Nano makes me want to hear all my music again as I work out, etc. I ordered "must have" Feyer's Gershwin from Amazon and was lucky to get the Gershwin CD. If only they could remaster all his works onto CDs at a lower price than the $100 plus I paid. Feyer is a top addition and it reminds me of the Stanhope days and his music magic that I wish to briefly tell you.
In the latter 70s, the Stanhope weekends were a joy, buttressed by Feyer's music. He held court and the audience was captivated. He was an excellent pianist with excellent trills in the high octaves, and nice contrast with the lower ones. The Gershwin CD the piece "I Got Rhythm" reminds one of small flames jumping lightly on a log. So light, so elegant, so much in rhythm. I would take my "A" dates to the Stanhope, including my future wife of 20 plus years. After the Met Opera or ballet, I would take my dates to the Stanhope. Usually two Kier Royals, supper, wine, and dessert would accompany George's fine music. Such a rich repertory and bottomless request well that he knew with top piano skill!
Missing on the CD was his singing and funny remarks. I recall him playing `Thank Heavens For Little Girls"... they are so helpless, and then he would pick some women from the audience and repeat the word " helpless' and the everyone would laugh. My dates were the younger women in the Stanhope back then and he tended to look at my dates.....and made them feel like a princess
The Stanhope was a bit expensive but a classy place. With George, it was worth every penny. I think Gunnar ( spelling?) was the head waiter. They knew you and you did not have to ask for a certain drink as they knew your need before your request. Unlike today, waiters are more of errand boys to the kitchens. George also knew your favorites in songs.
One thing that is not obvious, despite my Ivy MBA and a good undergraduate degree, one does not learn in early years the basic American songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc. Some of my dates knew many of the words to these songs from their social events. Hence for me it was a pleasant discovery and made me grateful to the mastery of George. It opened one's appreciation to the very rich music heritage of America.
The CD in ADD format was very clear; no his; and, the accompanying musicians were well heard in CD. Enjoy this CD!
One More Time.......2002-03-08
Anyone that likes solo piano, must have this one in their collection. Feyer was a superior pianist, and arranger. These are performances to LISTEN to. For alot less than a carton of ciggies, you can buy something good for you! Aloha
George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2001-04-21
Hours sped like minutes when sitting next to the keyboard of Feyer's Piano in the Stanhope. I only wish all of his albums could be re-released and a new generation might experience this rare talent. He played with consummate skill, gentle humor and a panache that I've been unable to find anywhere.
George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2000-12-26
This is undoubtedly one of the best recordings of popular Gershwin tunes. They are played with Feyer's european touch, but amazingly american in spirit. All his collections since 1951 ("Echoes of Paris", "Echoes of Broadway", "Echoes of Rome" etc.) should be re-mastered and released again, as well as his famous recordings collected in album "Cafe carlyle". It is a real music treasure.
This is the happiest music making imaginable........1999-10-24
It's been more than 40 years since I first ran across George Feyer's "Echoes..." series of recordings on the Vox label (Echoes of Paris, Echoes of Vienna, etc.) Every month I check to see if by some miracle these recordings have been reissued, but I doubt they ever will because of their original label. In the meantime we will make do with this excellent George Gershwin album, which seems to me to come closer to his old recordings than the other stereo-era Feyer recordings now available. But will some company out there PLEASE reissue his old mono VOX recordings and spread joy through the world!
