There have been many attempts at fusing Native flutes with synthesizer arrangements, but most of them fail because the synth sounds are pedestrian and stiff, or the flute playing is rudimentary. That's not the case with these two virtuosos. Gary Stroutsos brings the chops of jazz and Afro-Cuban playing to bear on a performance that nevertheless eschews technique in deference to nuance. Jonn Serrie, on the other hand, since 1987 has been articulating a lush, space-music sound on several albums that are noted for their richly textured sound design. Together, they carve out a contemplative zone of slow-motion space largos, touched by hints of Middle Eastern percussion. Serrie has been here before with his 1998 Native-inspired album, Spirit Keepers, but Stroutsos is a more gifted collaborator. His melodies weave from the curvaceous themes of Indian snake charmers on the title track to the more classically inclined refrain of "Earth Sky." The relentlessly slow pace of Hidden World can wear thin over the course of the album. Even the drama of field drums and cymbals and clay pot percussion barely breaks the surface of the album's doggedly contemplative mode. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars My kids really like this!.......2007-07-30

My kids, 6 1/2 and 3 years, really like this CD. They LOVE "Cantelope" and "Look at me now" songs. I gave it 4 stars because they totally love the Toddlers CD she has, which has to be 5 stars. I love that too! So sweet and doesn't make you crazy like some other CD's I have to play over and over...and over.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids of all ages.......2006-06-29

I have seen Sara perform twice now--the last time with her older daughter along with her. She is great with kids and her songs are catchy, easily learned and have wonderful messages in them. Look at me....a song that all parents should listen to and every kid should learn to sing. This album includes all of her older kid material..it will have you singing, clapping and wanting more. The final song on the album is beautiful and bittersweet and makes for a great lullaby. It's a wonderful collection. If you have the chance to see her perform...it's well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Third in an impressive series of audio CDs.......2004-03-10

Big Kid is third in an impressive series of audio CDs designed to inspire quality parent-child time through music and poetry. Award-winning singer and songwriter Sara Hickman reaches out with enthusiastic and movement-oriented songs to spark activity, confidence, and imagination in developing young minds. The individual tracks include Iolana, Cantaloupe!, Ooh La La, Middle Of A Little Country Road, Eat My Breakfast, Look At Me, Louise, Pledge, Little Seed, Radiation Man, Pink On The Inside, Here It Comes, My Sista My Friend, Nanatime!, Little Yella Dog, Belinsky, I Wish I Were A Princess, It's Fall, Space Poetry!, Pillowman!, Red Wagon, Rainstick, I Wish You Well, and Pray For Peace. Also very highly recommended are the two earlier CDs from Sarah Hickman: Newborn (featuring both traditional and original songs for newborns and their parents) and Toddler (a collection of songs, stories, and poetry that teaches counting, colors, animals, sounds, and geography suitable for preschoolers).

Album Description

Fucked Up's first full-length studio album marks a turning point for the mysterious Toronto band, transcending the boundaries of punk with melody, aggression, expansive structures, and enigmatic diatribes on what lies under the immediate, visualized world. They combine confrontational ideologies with deliberate misinformation to produce a brutal analysis on thought provocative punk. "Ironically, their fast and sloppy early 80's hardcore is a million times more musical and ferocious than 99% of professional myspace-era mosh bands, and their fans' post-show cuts and bruises remind us that this shit might have the potential to still be dangerous" - Vice. For fans of The Wipers, Ramones, The Who, Negative Approach, Pink Floyd.

5 out of 5 stars looking for gold? well, here you go!.......2007-04-24

wow. this is totally a mix of KRAUTROCK and HARDCORE PUNK ROCK. there are a few long, drawn out songs with amazing guitar melodies coupled with ferocious vocals. in addition, there plenty of three minute punk songs greatly influenced by the Undertones, Black Flag, and plenty of other amazing bands. maybe you could call them the NEUgative Approach of CANada. or shoegaze hardcore?

not to sound critical but this band is the antidote to a good amount of musical boredom that exists currently. there is nobody around that sounds like these guys and that's a great thing! whether you are an indie rock, punk, stoner, metal, or hardcore fan, this is worth checking out! cheers to Jade Tree for taking a chance on this underground sensation.

it is also worth noting that seeing this band live will convert you. ask people who were at SXSW this year when they played with Mew or when they brough Keith Morris out for a cover of "nervous breakdown".

5 out of 5 stars Are you serious?.......2007-02-28

Amazing record. These guys take the vintage Dischord sound and throw in some Krautrock and blissed-out noise/psych grooves and end up with something else entirely. This album manages to be both incredibly heavy and immediate, yet very hooky and memorable at the same time. Easily one of my favorite albums of the year.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but it isn't going to change your life .......2007-02-11

While its not bad, Hidden World was certainly hyped to be a lot more than it is. After numerous listens, Hidden World has grown on me a little, but not that much. It has all the elements that I like (strong riffs, thoughtful lyrics, etc.) the album tends to bore me. I dont know whats missing, but I can tell it is not there. I hope to find more to this album as I continue to listen and try to get into it.......but I do not see myself listening to this a year from now.

2 out of 5 stars Why am I bothering with new music? .......2006-12-08

I need to just deal with it; I'm old and out of touch and I think anything new that came out during the last four or five years is a big steaming dumpster load of suck and anyone who likes it must be an idiot. This sounds like a pretentious post-hardcore band with Yosemite Sam on vocals. I swear I heard him sing the lyric, "I'LL KEEL HAUL YA, YA LOW DOWN DIRTY VARMINT!" Do kids like that sort of thing nowadays? Freakin' kids.

5 out of 5 stars Sharing the Light: Jewish Music Around the Globe.......2004-01-17

The gate may be hidden ... but those who find it ... and dare to pass through ... will be highly rewarded. This music is one the best 2 CD compilations of 2003. It is a gem that glows brightly. This CD sends out a rainbow of colours in all directions. What makes it so special is the careful selections of music contained within it ...

Chava Alberstein on track #1 sings an Israeli song in a style reminiscent of Joan Baez or Judy Collins from the '60s & '70s. No doubt the message is just as meaningful to those who speak the language ... The next two tracks are among my favorites: Savina Yannatou, although Greek, sings Sephardic songs with a beautiful ethereal voice. She so captivated me when I first heard her, I searched far & wide to own more of her music. Ofra Haza provides stronge vocals and a Middle Eastern rhythm and flavour to her rendition of the Yeminite song, "Ayelet Chen". It has me spellbound and transfixed, everytime I listen. This compilation has unique examples of Jewish music from such exotic places as India, Morocco, Algeria, Uzbekistan, and even Zimbabwe.

I hope to discover more CDs by Romiel Daniel, who creates a fascinating spiritual experience with his track "Aischet Chayil". I recognize the tabla, but it is the melody and rhythm that has one transcending to energetic realms beyond description ... The Bukharan Jewish Ensemble Shshmaqam produce some really unusal and outstanding traditional music - a hypnotic spell is cast over me when hearing them play. Luckily, they produced a CD and I discovered where to buy it ... Fortuna, from Brazil sings in a sultry, almost torch-singer mode that includes recgonizable Jewish roots music in the style and melody.
The klezmer music revival of the '70s has blossomed around the world and many great examples of music are present on this CD. The Klezmatics, Brave New World, Alicial Svigals, Michael Alpert, and the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band all produce the finest music - anyone familiar with the genre, understands. Anyone unfamiliar just needs listen to one, *only* one track by *any* of these artists ... to feel the passion, energy, and spirit of this wonderful music. That which was concealed has now been revealed and the world of music will *never* be the same! My highest recommendations to buy! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5 out of 5 stars the best thing that happened to Jewish music.......2003-09-02

I got this cd as a gift, now I came back to amazon to buy it for all my friends. If you have not heard any Jewish music before, this is the best 2 disk set to addict you forever. If you buy (or get) every Jewish related cd like me, this is cd for you too. It has the best that Jewish music has to offer: merry folksongs, spiritually uplifting pieces, beautiful instrumentals, exotic tunes (they even have one from Zimbabwe!), and much much more. The first cd contains Jewish music that is not Klezmer, it is in Hebrew and Ladino, it comes from all over the world, from India to Brazil. Did I mention Zimbabwe? I generally am not so crazy about sephardic music, but this was just beautiful. What is especially amazing how well it all fits together, it is beautifully done, both artistically and musically. The second CD is even better. All stars of Klezmer music are there. Klezmatics, Brave Old World, Klezmer Conservatory Band, and all present their best songs. I think this is the best Klezmer compilation i have ever heard (and i own many). Chicken song by Henry Sapoznik is hilarious - it mixes English words in, so i was able to get some of it. An Australian band presents a beautiful Black Cat song in Yiddish, which mixes swing with Gypsy motifs. And of course, there are old time favorites, like Ale Brider and Shprayz zikh mir.

The most unusual part of this CD is that liner notes have tons of information. They have 33 pages of fascinating history on PDF file on the first CD. It is very informative, and useful.

Indeed, the perfect cd, and once again, i recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz meets classical.......1999-11-24

Andy statman finds a beautiful middle-ground between jazzy clarinet and classical vibes. The folk elements add character and content to the music, by putting it in a cultural context. Just wish someone would release the wonderful Swingrass '83 with Statman on mandolin: Wow!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......1999-07-22

I listen to this and/or "The Gods of Our Fathers" every night while meditating, and often play it after I turn the lights out, and when I get up in the morning. It is lovely, lyrical, uplifting, joy-inspiring music, and Andy Statman's fresh, somewhat jazz-influenced approach raises the beautiful traditional melodies to new levels.

4 out of 5 stars Quite peaceful.......2001-02-09

I am certainly not the most knowledgeable of New Age listeners. I do think this album is worth listening to and I personally think John Serrie did a fine job in his synth-to-flute blending. In fact, the balance of both is very good. "Tuptim's Garden" is probably my favorite.

There are two or three tracks differing from the rest, but the change is not necessarily bad. Not the most consistent of New Age albums I've heard, but definately worth it if you're looking for quiet Native type of music.

I don't think this makes good meditation music if that's what you're looking for. As a matter of fact, I don't think any music should be heard when meditating.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic echoes feed the soul.......2000-10-24

I love this CD! It has the earthy resonance of Native American melodies blended with other compositions that remind me of Enya's Celtic mysticism. I find it beautiful to listen to and spiritually satisfying, although it certainly can't be pigeon-holed as expressing strictly one style. Maybe that's why it appeals to me so much: an ethereal excursion touching several musical traditions, that relaxes the psyche and the body.

1 out of 5 stars Boring-Boring-Boring-Boring.......2000-10-16

John Serrie is typical new age that tries various venues (native american) and puts out more new age fluffey music. All his CDs basically sound the same...no matter what the theme appears to be. So, if you buy one of his CDs, you basically have them all. There are a lot of seriously talented musicans that do this style of music much much better. Dont waste your money.

3 out of 5 stars Hidden appeal.......2000-08-31

I am a die hard Serrie fan, but I am over his experimentation with the Native American theme. "Spirit Keepers" was enough for me, and although it was good (with time, since I don't listen to a great deal of Native American music), he didn't need to create a sister c.d., which is even weaker than "Spirit Keepers". All is not lost on this release, though. With Serrie, there will always be nice moments, such is on the first two and final two tracks. In between, it's mostly annoying, with Gary Stroutsos' flute playing coupled with Jonn Serrie's minimal soundscape backdrop. This c.d. could easily get lost without much notice in the world of Native American music, except that Jonn Serrie has gained a very good reputation for premium space music. For this reason, it will be exposed to a wider audience, some of whom will likely be less than impressed. Hopefully, Jonn Serrie has exited this trendy genre of music and has started projects in other directions.

i bought this CD based on the other reviews on Amazon & was very disappointed when i finally got it... i own 4 other Bola Sete CDs & this is easily my least favorite & will soon be for sale... i LOVE Bolas' music & guitar playing [see some of my other reviews] BUT this CD is not that music... much more "new age" sounding & dissonant than his other recordings... unless you're a collector of all of Bolas' recordings- i'd spend my money on his other recordings like "Ocean Memories" or "Tour de Force".

      5 out of 5 stars Immaculent.......2004-05-15

I have never heard anything like it. It puts feelings into music unlike anything else I have ever heard. Bola is one of my favorite musicians and this might be the best album he ever recorded. The sound is lush, full and very spiritual. I recommend this to every one with ears

      5 out of 5 stars a unique CD.......2002-06-02

This CD contains some remarkable guitar playing. Where Bola Sete's "Ocean Memories" contains openly dramatic music, this CD is quiet, personal, and very deep. It isn't really jazz, or Brazilian style, or any specific style, but just the composer's own music. It's like being inside his head. The playing is immaculate and the guitar (a steel string acoustic) very well recorded. Best listened to in quiet surroundings, this is one CD that will last for a lifetime of listening. Attractive artwork, including a good photo of the composer, full detailed notes. Very strongly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Concept Album.......2006-01-09

The Hidden World shows off Copyright as a rock band of amazing range and ability to compose an album as a unified piece of art. The journey starts off in the pop-rock vein and takes a turn for the more dramatic halfway through, closing perfectly with the highly inventive Whatever Befalls Me. Like a lot of great albums that have become classics, this is a concept album and ought to be listened from start to finish, not that there isn't hit material that stands on its own on it - there is.
