    Bluegrass gospel recordings typically place a premium on the traditional sounds of close harmonies, tight arrangements, and churchly melodies. But longtime Union Station member Ron Block seems heaven bent on cutting a new gospel road. Blending together "newgrass" and adult contemporary folk, Block has fashioned a spiritual song cycle grounded very much in the present. "Higher Than Man" quotes John 8 and rocks like Whiskeytown unplugged, while "Searching..." reinterprets the metaphysics of The Matrix, and the gorgeous "Is It Any Wonder?" rewrites Les Miserables from a born-again perspective. The somber mood of these originals may put off a few listeners, but breakdowns like "Set Your Children Free," which features harmonies from Soggy Bottom Boy Dan Tyminski, and "In the Morning Light," with sizzling mandolin from Nickel Creek's Chris Thile, let in a bit of radiant joy. --Roy Kasten

    Absolutely Brilliant.......2007-01-26

    Ron Block is one of two banjo/guitar players in Union Station (Alison Krauss' band), and is a great talent who deserves more attention. Alison Krauss and Union Station have recorded a couple of his Christian songs, which are amazing ("There is a Reason" and " Living Prayer"). He recorded his own album, "Faraway Land," in 2001, which has become one of my all-time favorite discs. The playing and music are great, but I especially love his lyrics. They are on a completely different level from most worship songs I've heard. There is an intimacy and intellect in his words that really grab me. He addresses the struggle of becoming and being a Christian in a way that I haven't heard elsewhere, and the music is brilliant - the mood, the musicianship, the production - it's all spot on. It's as enjoyable and inspiring as it is thought provoking. I highly recommend it. Take a chance on this CD. I'm confident it will be one of your all-time favorites too.

    What an incredible blessing this album has been! My brother bought it when it was released, and I heard it a few times, and thought "It's not bad." Then something just clicked. I finally started listening to the words, and was simply blown away. This is the best bluegrass CD I have ever heard.
    
    From start to finish, it is a wonderful journey. You know that music is inspired when it leads you to the foot of the cross. This does. The lyrics and arranging are just great. Take my advice- BUY IT!
    
    

    A glimpse into the heart of Ron Block.......2006-05-19

    This is an excellent collection of Christian music by a consummate writer and instrumentalist. Ron's voice is probably more suited to the bluegrassy blending of Union Station, but his true voice lives in his words and music. It is there that you will gain a glimpse into the heart of a true man of God. Much of popular contemporary Christian music is filled with bad theology. You will not find anything of the sort here. Ron's theology is as carefully crafted as his songs.
    If you love good music you will not be disappointed on any level - whether you are a Christian or not.

    This album is expertly crafted. Not only is the musicianship extremely good, but the lyrics are much better than many other christian songs out there. Even though I wasn't a big fan of bluegrass music before, I am now.

    An understated musician makes a valiant first effort..........2006-02-25

    Union Station has had some ups and downs, but each member has proven their abilities are beyond the average pickers and grinners. Alison is the velvet voice and violin prodigy, Dan is the Soggy Bottom Boy, Jerry is the Dobro Wizard, Barry is the good-looking bass player, and Ron is that guy on the end that plays the banjo.
    
    What Ron actually is, is a guitar and banjo virtuoso. He doesn't have a superstar's voice, or a superstar's looks. What he does have is a strong faith in Christ, and a gift for writing bluegrass gospel music. He takes that faith to a new level in this, his first release. I enjoyed it, and I look forward to more of his work.

    A good album for a Good Film........2003-02-23

    I think that, like the movie, the album is great, 'cos is a sad and wonderful album where great artist play.

    Its a nostalgic album for nostalgic people, during the film a very important part is that melancholy music that follow us during all the movie, and that's where the soundtrack plays a important part.

    Putting great names together doesn't work here.......1999-07-02

    Usually, I avoid soundtrack cds, but this one was on sale and it had some great names on it. Half of the songs are ok, but putting them together on a disc doesn't make a good album. You can hear the various styles of the participating artists colliding. U2, Nick Cave, Herbert Gronemeyer, Anderson? What do these artists have in common apart from their admiration for Wim Wenders. Like the movie, the album is an artistic overkill. It's just too much. The instrumental parts at the end are a complete waste. They can't surive without the images in the movie. Avoid this album unless you want a sampler to discover some new artists. But don't play it from a to z.

    I've loved the movie and the music it has. I'm fan of U2 so it'd have been imposible not to love it. But the reason why I want the CD is because of Cassiel's song and i can't find it anywhere. Neither in the net nor in Argentina.

    This soundtrack truly captures the emotions of the movie. As you listen to each song, close your eyes and watch the scenes from the movie dramatically replay in your mind. Most likely you will have to search for this album, but no doubt all of you fans of Cassiel and Damiel will be glad you did.

All in all, this is a single for collectors only. The Best EP of All Time........2006-05-11 I think this is probably the best EP U2 has put out to date. Unlike current EPs or CD singles, this CD has six songs, not two, therefore worth the money. 1) Stay a timeless U2 song; it is one of my favorites in the catalog of the band. 2) I've Got You Under My Skin, great duet Bono has with Blue Eyes. 3) Slow Dancing, this is a melancholy tempo song that the band hasn't really replicated as of recent, but wonderful. 4) Bullet the Blue Sky, is great live, amazing version. 5) Love is Blindness, again another one of my favorite tunes by U2. This live version is astonishing. It has such a powerful Edge, pun intended. 6) Lemon (Bad Yard Club), this remix isn't too bad. However if I had to pick, it is the weakest track on the CD. I am not saying that it is bad, but every other song isn't another artist's vision. Overall, the remix is fun and can get your feet moving a bit. This EP is probably a rare one now, but I believe it is well worth searching for. If you are still able to get this CD, it wouldn't be a bad idea, U2 fan or not. Great Singers and Great Songs.......2006-02-14 At first glance, the idea of bringing Bono & Frank Sinatra together for a duet seems like it can't miss. The end product, however, falls short of its potential. Don't get me wrong, I liked the duet just fine, but buy this EP for Slow Dancing and the live tracks. I first heard about this collaboration when I read a U2 biography. The description of the two mega stars/egos collaborating and performing together was hillarious. (For instance, Bono describes briefly passing out in Frank's living room while drinking hard with Frank and his buddies. He awakens to find his pants wet and thinks he has peed his pants. After several tense moments described in excruciating detail, he is relieved when he discovers that he has spilled his drink in his lap). The book flamed my curiosity so I went out and bought the EP. When I heard the duet, I liked it, but when I heard Slow Dancing, I knew the investment was worth every penny. Simply stated, a great song performed by a great singer. THE 2 LIVE TRACKS are Bullet The Blue Sky & Love Is Blindness. Which one is better? Love Is Blindness. Why? Because, when Bono sings like he is breathing his last breath, the crowd responds with equal passion. Bono sings this intense love song like he may never love again. To reiterate the constant theme of this EP: a great song sung by a great singer. Frankie would be proud. Don't get me wrong, this live version of Bullet The Blue Sky kicks butt (see my review of Zooropa 1993 At The RDS Stadium, Dublin). I just happen to think that Love is Blindness is one of U2's best. Lemon Bad Yard Club Edit is also pretty cool. There is more synth in this version than on the original release and it stays intense throughout. Overall *****music, *****single. BUY THIS CD. Even if it is $26.99, buy it. Other great EPs by U2 to consider: Whos Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses If God Will Send His Angels Please (Part 1) (stay AWAY from Part 2!!!) Sunday Bloody Sunday. Great single........2006-01-30 This is an excellent single I picked up when it came out. However, my copy has the same cover, but different tracks. Mine only has one mix of "Lemon", but also includes a track called "Slow Dancing", a live "Love Is Blindness", and an awesome live "Bullet The Blue Sky". I've never seen another one, so I guess I should feel lucky. These four songs shown here are sweet though. The duet with Frank is classic, and the "Lemon" mixes are a big plus. It's nice to have a follow-up on such a warm and professionally presented album, and this does not disappoint. On the first disc of this two-CD set there are a number of simple tunes including themes by Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven; on the second disc we hear their variations. Once again Rosenberger's playing seems suited to the primary goal at hand: putting children to sleep. Her execution is without edges or unpleasant texture of any kind.
