Caravan of Light

David Arkenstone's musical legacy is more than legendary; as a pioneer in the field of New Age music from its early days, Arkenstone's greatest challenges have always lain within his own path. On Caravan of Light, his latest release from Narada Records, Arkenstone explores the rich musical landscapes of the Spice Road, complete with windswept dramas, dynamic, powerful orchestrations, and a heavy dose of smooth jazz. From the moment Caravan of Light opens with the soft cascade of "Rendezvous" to the highly charged "Skies of Africa," Arkenstone uses sound and musical instruments as a master painter uses color and canvas, weaving patterns and textures from Middle Eastern sources into a cinematic dreamscape. Moving from the subtle stillness in "Jewels of the Night" to the celebratory choral on "Road to Zanzibar," Caravan of Light is a journey of a new musical breakthrough, a vision emerging into awakening, far-reaching and adventurous. --Leslie R. Love him or hate him, Nigel Kennedy can play a mean fiddle. And on Riders on the Storm: The Doors Concerto, the violinist, arranger Jaz Coleman, and the Prague Symphony Orchestra pay energetic tribute to--who else?--the Doors. These instrumental string arrangements try their damnedest to avoid becoming elevator-music covers, but they only vaguely resemble the Doors' originals. The violinist loves a jam, and these arrangements thankfully give him plenty of room to solo. The longer tracks--"Light My Fire" and "The End"--work best, with Kennedy offering inspired playing and plenty of drama. Doors fans may be interested in hearing fresh takes on their favorite tunes ("Riders on the Storm," "Light My Fire," "The Unknown Soldier," and more), but those accustomed to Kennedy's more classical endeavors may be disappointed. Oddly enough, the living members of the Doors have nothing but great things to say about this disc. Strange days, indeed. --Jason Verlinde

"Concerto" says everything.......2006-12-19
This is a very well executed adaptation of Doors music into classic. I also own the fantastic George Winston's "Night Divides the Day", and I could say both CDs, even though different in it's category, perform a fantastic tribute to The Doors. But this is not a CD for "The Doors" fans, as it is more directed to Classical lovers. You will find very interesting versions of: Spanish Caravan & The Crystal Ship
The Vietnam Concerto.......2006-11-05
I really love this album. To me, it evokes all the tragedy and sadness of the Vietnam war. Every time I listen to it, I feel very moved. Kennedy is an inspired violinist, and his instrument fairly weeps at times. So, if you are a baby-boomer like me, you may really respond to music that captures the times in which the Doors wrote and sang.
Interesting music - haunting and beautiful.......2006-01-07
As a music guy, I can listen to classical and then go to rap and appreciate both.
As I really like the Doors, I saw this CD and recognizing what Jaz Coleman did with Led Zeppelin, I bought this CD.
It is not much like the LeZeppelin effort. However, both are equally beautiful. The LZ disc sounded like a movie soundtrack. Here the music sounds like a sad concerto.
Truly, I was struck by the sadness in the music. It is powerful though, and the arrangements strike the right chord (terrible pun - sorry) between being exactly similar to the Doors music, and a fresh interpretation.
Should you buy this disc? Well, if you enjoy classical music and you are not a snob - then yes. This disc may get you to enjoy some contemporary music in a vital interpretation. If you are a Doors fan, I would think you would enjoy hearing your favorite songs being played in a new way.
Overall, I believe this is an interesting disc to own. Well worth it. It is and does stand within my classical collection. It ain't Horowitz, but it sure is sweet!!
Sorry..........2005-09-08
Sorry this review is short, but this album was terrible. The members have talent, but the songs bare no resemblance to Doors songs what-so-ever. I have found this at every library in the city of Kootenai County in Idaho, so you should try your local library. Really bad CD. For more details, e-mail me at moviefreak144@hotmail.com
Beautiful, Smart.......2005-08-22
If any rock group deserved to be recorded in classical arrangements it would be The Doors. This could have been thrown together haphazardly to make a quick buck like some classical rock recordings but thankfully it hasn't. A lot of work was put into this. The Doors were much more musical and clever than many rocks bands. Jim Morrison was an extremely dynamic and sensitive vocalist and Nigel Kennedy pays complete homage to him. There is nothing but utter respect for The Doors music here. They chose some of the best musical Doors songs but I wish they would have included The Crystal Ship with maybe a soft piano solo. I think "Crystal Ship" was Ray Manzarek's most creative work. These are very, very deep orchestrations and the feelings of the original songs are preserved throughout (although I had trouble with "Unknown Soldier" and "People are Strange"). You will hear new things every time you listen to it. The diversions in each piece are true to the original songs. Jim Morrison's melodies are eerily mimicked on many instruments and you can hear Jim's beauty and wonderful phrasing. "Spanish Caravan" features a very competent classical guitarist and the melody played by an extremely sensitive violinist. My favorite song on this recording "Love Street" (allegedly written for the street which Jim and Pamela Courson lived in Lauryl Canyon) is double the length of the original song, a very, very emotional, very beautiful and haunting composition. If one song could summarize Jim and Pam's relationship and their sad and tragic lives it would be this song. During "Love Street" one can envision Jim and Pam in an eternal embrace. The spirit of "Light my Fire" comes shining through, if not maybe a little too bouncy and campy and not soft enough. The violas play the left-hand organ accompanyment and there is plenty of counterpoint. I didn't quite understand "People are Strange". It is turned into a romantic and galloping song whereas the original song was quite odd and spacey with shifting vocal effects. I had the most trouble with "Unkown Soldier", it's highly romanticized and I didn't recognize it. Likewise, "Strange Days" is drawn out and romanticized with harps, etc. The End is extremely well done, the eastern modality gives you the sense of a caravan on an endless trek through the Sahara desert. The recording mix is perfect: the lead violinist or any of the other soloists are not sharp or favored in the least. I only wish this was a double CD and included other emotional songs like Queen of the Highway, Hyacinth House, Wild Child, Love Her Madly, LA Woman, Blue Sunday, Wishful Sinful, Unhappy Girl, The Soft Parade and definitely Moonlight Drive and The Crystal Ship. Ray Manzarek (and Robby/John) should be very proud of what Nigel Kennedy has done. I think Jim would be proud, too. You do not have to be a classical music lover to enjoy this recording, you will understand most of these songs. This is an absolutely wonderful CD to sit down and relax to. Thank you very much Nigel and Ray, please record more Doors!

Close your eyes, and imagine yourself on a Caravan..........2007-05-06
Each song makes your spirit come alive, like a gypsy caravan...beconing your soul to dance. David Arkenstone's one of my favorite artists. Each of his CD's transports your spirit to another place and time. "Inshallah" and "Under The Gypsy Moon" are two that bring out the "Gypsy" in my soul!
Hit and Miss.......2006-03-27
My first Arkenstone was "Valley in the Clouds", which, although somewhat dated and monochromatic, is still good. I loved "In the Wake of the Wind", and was intrigued to further expand my Arkenstone collection by "Visionary" (wonderful!), from which I picked "Caravan of Light" based on it's representation there.
While I'm tempted to join the reviewer who said: "Oops, should've listened before buying", I will not. It seems reviewers either laud or pan "Caravan...", and there's nobody in the middle. Sometimes that's a sign of something very good, but very experimental.
Not this time. While "Caravan..." contains some of Arkenstone's best stuff yet, the "Visionary" included tracks "Inshallah", "Dance in the Desert", and "Rendevous" come to mind, it also contains some very forgetable material. More forgetable than in his other efforts. Most of the vocals, for example, are completely forgetable, although "Under the Gypsy Moon" is okay.
It is also very disjointed, jumping from China to Africa without much of a thematic unity or story. The track "The Jade Mountain", while in and of itself a decent piece or work, seems to belong on a different album. It is out of place here. The chorus at the end of the track "Caravan of Light" is very trite and almost juvenile sounding, ruins an otherwise decent track, and almost ruins the entire effort.
But, I still give this three stars. If you can get it used buy it, and go ahead and enjoy the tracks I have mentioned above as some of his best, along with other decent work in "Jewels of the Night", "The Spice Road", and "Through the Marketplace".
Just don't expect "In the Wake of the Wind", or Hans Zimmer's "Millenium", or Lanz and Speer's "Bridge of Dreams" here. "Caravan of Light" promises much more (especially on the promotional "Visionary") than it delivers.
DESERT WINDS.......2003-11-14
CARAVAN OF LIGHT is one of the more unusually conceived albums he has made. This one is more contemporary in its arrangements and instrumentation. The addition of the horn section is probably the most noticeable diversion of Arkenstone's. I agree that the vocals add little to the CD, would have been better had they been kept instrumentals. However, I liked the Egyptian and eastern feel of most of the songs and the musicianship is as always par excellence. Arkenstone has been a visionary and rebel in the new age market, and this further asserts his originality and willingness to take risks and explore new horizons. Not a great collection, but still very good.
Amazed by the diversity of opinions.......2003-02-24
"Caravan of Light" was my first David Arkenstone album. I have since bought another and intend to look for more. I have nothing to judge this album by because it was my first, but I personally love it. The total differences of opinions on this album just show the diversity in taste. Call me stupid, but the broad spectrum of music was what appealed to me.
Caravan of Light... Oops! Shoulda tried before I Buyed!.......2002-01-08
After having listened to a few Arkenstone "feature" tracks, (i.e. "Another star in the Sky", "Under the Canopy") from other Narada compilations, I liked what I heard, and as a result made my first purchase of a full Arkenstone CD. But.., as I soon discovered, this is not a "close your eyes and be taken on a soothing musical journey" type recording.
Firstly, it was not the 'instrumental' recording I had expected it to be. (There are some (not-so-great) "featured" singers on half of the tracks!)
Secondly, I found most of the compositions in this recording to be musically confusing & disjointed, as if the results of some sort of mad experiment! What ever continuity & flow that was existent on some of the tracks was rudely interrupted with vocals that seemed so.. out of place!. (maybe packing way to many elements in attempt to create a dynamic sound?) This recording sounds like it should be classified under 'Neuvo Jazz Techno Muck' or some other category of it's own..., "BAD" would do!
Don't get me wrong though, I'm not trying to be caustic with my review. David has produced some pieces I genuinely love, and where I'm inspired to continuously hit the 'Replay' button, but it's been rare. I find I have to "cherry pick" to collect the pieces I like and then make my own compilation disks. (i.e. 'Under the Canopy' is lively and yet soothing, an interesting piece).
Needless to say, I am disappointed with this particular album. The one element I did appreciate though, was the rich and skillful use of percussion instruments throughout the recording.
I also like his Christmas recordings, which are very good, (Narada Christmas.. etc.), but now I realize, that's probably because he had a script to follow!
( Fah la la, la la, La la.. La Laaaa!)
Guess I've been spoiled by the likes of *Ray Lynch, Vangelis and *Hans Zimmer...
You may not have heard of Hans, but you most likely have heard many very moving and memorable compositions somewhere and wondered.., who did that? If you like 'powerful, dramatic and spiritually moving, epic 'movie type' compositions... check out *Hans Zimmer.( i.e. on CD: "Millennium"!) ...and then just lay back, relax.., close your eyes ...and let your mind be taken on a wonderfully dynamic & moving journey to places.. far, far away...
(*) = awesome!

The Kronos Quartet have been luminaries of modern Western classical music for more than thirty years. So despite their previous forays into world music, a headlong dive into the alternative universe of Bollywood (Bombay-plus-Hollywood) soundtracks may seem somewhat incongruous. But Kronos leader David Harrington is a longtime fan of composer R.D. Burman¹s florid pop extravaganzas, which propelled an already saturated palette into day-glo and beyond. To get the project off the ground, he had to convince one of India¹s prolific and versatile "playback" singers to come on board. The legendary Asha Bhosle is a renowned Burman interpreter so securing her services was a major coup. To replicate the reverb-laden "wall of sound" typical of Burman arrangements, Kronos and Ashaji, accompanied by Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain and Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man, overdubbed themselves into a teeming multitude. However, there is nothing soulless or "canned" about the results; indeed, composer and singer emerge refreshed and more vivid than ever before, shaking their stuff amid swirling Technicolor veils of tongue-in-cheek mystery and sensuality. --Christina Roden
Album Description
Sumptuous and surreal, the Kronos Quartet and Asha Bhosle's You've Stolen My Heart is not unlike the colorful, melodramatic Indian film musicals to which it pays tribute. Eight of its twelve tracks feature superstar Bollywood film playback singer Asha Bhosle, widely considered the world's most recorded vocalist. The songs were chosen from the repertoire of her husband, the late composer R.D. Burman, who revolutionized the sound of the movies produced at Mumbai's (formerly Bombay) fabled studios, a.k.a. Bollywood.
Customer Reviews:
Warning: this CD is addictive.......2007-01-12
Now in her early 60s, Asha Bhosle's voice has matured since the heyday of her Bollywood career in the 60s-70s and in these reworkings of some of her greatest hits (written by her late husband R.K.Burman) it's positively honey-like. The collaboration with Kronos Quartet is inspired: substitute electronically enhanced violins for Duane Eddy guitars and you have an inkling of the ideas flying around the disc. The liner notes are informative and there's plenty of information for the Bollywood novice. However, whether you understand Hindi or not, this is a collection of songs - humorous, romantic, tacky, and at times so hilariously naff in the way of Indian homages to western pop it's actually cool! I would be amazed if you don't want to keep going back to it, once heard.
Clever, but...........2006-04-07
Chronos has always emphasized being clever over being musical- although they are splendid musicians- and this album is perhaps the ultimate exegesis of that. The actual music is perhaps exotic, to western ears, but it is also uninteresting. Indian film music combines the sound of the East with the banality of pop, and the result isn't anything that bears more than one listening; personally, I was continually reminded of the incidental Indian-themed music that kept popping up in the Beatles' movie "Help", although that soundtrack was a bit more clever. Another volume for the library of the die-hard Chronos fan, perhaps, but not necessarily anyone alse.
Bhosle, Pavrotti, Sinatra.......2006-02-12
Some vocalists are one-of-a-kind, brilliant and beautiful, setting the standard for their particular music. Asha Bhosle is one of them. I heard her with the Kronos in performance in San Francisco, and they took my breath away. This album isn't quite the same as being there but it's very, very close. Asha, Kronos - please do it again!
Cheap music.......2006-01-02
I dont know how the kronos quartet to come down so low. The music is cheap. I couldn't hear any of the tracks completely. They were so insipid.Complete waste of money. I have heard much better from Asha.
I Think They Should Have Selected a More Contemporary Singer.......2005-11-05
I love Asha Bhosle and one only has to listen to her Live at the Albert Hall album. Problem is, she has aged, and her voice shows it. Regrettably, her vocals on this album constantly remind me of this and I can't listen to the album with pleasure. I would say the same of such wonderful singers as June Carter and Amalia Mendoza. This was a wonderful opportunity to introduce much of the world to the zaniness of Bollywood movie music, with its fabulous arrangements and wacky use of all imaginable instruments from all over the world. Instead it makes me sad to hear Asha not at her peak.

Charming Coates Recordings.......2007-02-16
The best of British light classical music in the first half of the century, represented particularly by Eric Coates and Alfred Ketelbey, is a glimpse of a vanished era. Coates' music is largely forgotten in the U.S. today. Record-collectors, however, quickly discovered Coates' wonderful recordings via the numerous 78-rpm discs he made for Columbia and Decca/London, released in both the U.K. and the U.S. Fortunately, Naxos has digitally remastered some of the best of these delightful performances.
Coates was a gifted melodist and orchestrator. He was also a very competent conductor, as these recordings demonstrate. It is a real treat to hear him conducting his own music, some of which was recorded in stereo by Frederick Fennell for Mercury Records. These are truly light classical gems, much in the "pops" vein, and can be enjoyed both classical music lovers and those who prefer the lighter classics.
Ah, Nostalgia!.......2001-11-20
Although I'm sure there are those that would disagree with me, I consider this the Mecca of all Eric Coates CDs. To be able to hear the works not only written by the composer but conducted as well...What can I say? The fact that during the reengineering of the original recordings not all of the hisses, cracks and pops were removed only adds to the charm and enjoyment of these fabulous and historic recordings. Best on the disc: bands 10, 11 and 12, "London Suite," recorded in March of 1933.
Eric Coates Conducts His Own Music........2001-10-05
Eric Coates wrote light music that was very good music. A very experienced practitioner, he was highly regarded by his public, his publishers, his colleagues, and by record companies. He recorded his own works extensively, and inimitably.
Peter Dempsey, working from original 78s issued between 1926 and 1940, has produced and annotated this welcome addition to the Naxos catalogue devoted to Eric Coates conducting his own music. The orchestra, usually named "Symphony Orchestra" on the original labels and in this Naxos issue also, was frequently the London Philharmonic Orchestra - no less. This was the case with Tracks 2 - 5, 9 - 12, and 14.
You'll hear an hour of delightful music here, well transferred and presented.
