Product Description
Beneath the Quiet, Quinn's fifth CD release, captures all the magic of his previous four while expanding into new territory with his passionate lead vocal performance on My Secret Yearning. "Somebody save me from my secret yearning," he emotes, revealing the spiritual struggle of an anchoress living in extreme austerity in the thirteenth century. You will hear his captivating voice, over an answering machine on Evelynn, and the story of a midnight encounter that will send shivers down your spine on Jivana. All twelve songs combine classical, pop and world textures and are surrounded by drums and percussion that Quinn has collected from around the world. Amidst the pulsing grooves and evocative soundscapes you will be transported into a realm of pure euphoria. This second release on Orison Records is sure to stir things up in the world of Ambient World Music. O:m (Orison Music.com)

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing Debut Disc.......2003-11-18
The body of work performed on this disc comes from the pen
of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. The overall impression I
got was one of non-commitment to the feeling of the music
infact an inability to enter the composers emotional world.
As we know a true interpretatation of Tchaikovsky's music
cannot be feigned it must come from the inner most self.
Shoda has brought off the shorter numbers of Cui and Rimsky
with beautiful tonal colouring and expressiveness but fails to
deliver the goods with the highly emotive Tchaikovsky songs.
His 'Midst the din of the ball' a classic number falls
completely flat with little regard to expressive detail and phrasing.
It would pay him to listen to Nikolai Gedda's incomparable
versions and learn from them.
Also both the accompanist and soloist unduly distort the
tempos in Tchaikovsky's 'It was in early spring'-distracting and unnecessary.
His voice lacks tonal colour. For a more mature reading listen to Sergei Larin.
Excellent debut recital.......2002-05-13
This is an excellent recital, with Gergiev's sister on the piano. Shtoda seems on the way to becoming a big name opera star.
The only reason that this gets 4 stars not 5 is that EMI chose to issue the original red and white 'Debut Series' release without texts or translations, something later remedied with a new cover (featuring Shtoda in an ethereal grey photo), but with the same catalogue number.
Anyone wanting a better documented introduction to Russian song might be better off with the Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky or Glinka discs by mezzo Lina Mkrtchyan on Opus111 (cyrillic script), or the 'Russian Romance' series by tenor Larin on Chandos (cyrillic again), or the 'Russian Images' recitals by bass Savenko on Hyperion (romanized script).

Customer Reviews:
Stellar, Absolutely Stellar ..........2003-08-07
Guys who write and perform their own music, it doesn't get any better than this. The stellar song writing efforts by Aaron Adelsperger and Tim Wilsbach are brought to a clear, clean sound on "Please. Quiet. Recording" through great guitar, mandolin, bass and percussion performances by three guys who grew up together in "the Region" under the industrial shadows of Northwest Indiana. Paging Raymond's lyrics don't leave your subconscious very easily, especially after hearing them vocalized through the sharp harmonies of Adelsperger and Wilsbach. The emotion illustrated by this music, shows young men, who have already lived far beyond their years .... No gimmicks or electronic magic tricks here, just great performances by guys whose passion for playing music becomes ever more clear when listing to each cut. This is the kind of music, where other song writers sit back and say ... "I wish I would have written that !!!" and other musicians put down their instruments just to hear these guys play. Their follow up CD effort "Bridges Left to Burn" further clarifies the evolution of this great band. If you love song writing and music performed by guys who "share their own stories" ... you can't go wrong here.
I LOVE THESE GUYS.......2002-09-18
Paging Raymond come from my neighborhood. I had never heard of them until I went to see my favorite band in the world, Mabel Mabel...check out www.mabelmabel.com...in concert. They opened up. The two singers are incredible. One sounds like Pat from Train and the other sounds like Angie Aparo...who EVERYONE needs to check out!...and neither of those are bad things. They're a lot of fun and this album is great. Songs like 23 Miles and Ghosts really make this album great. I recommend this band to everyone. Alt-country really rocks anyway!
