As good as it gets.......2005-01-12
Years ago I had a LP of "The Hawk Talks". I was more into rock & roll back then, but I remembered Hawkin's amazing rich tone years after I ditched my turntable and records for a CD player. Naturally, as I started listening to more jazz, I wanted some Hawk for my collection.
If there is a better record out there, I have yet to hear it. The warmth, richness & elegance of Hawkin's playing hardly seem like something of this world. The supporting cast is stellar. Another reviewer put it well, there is not a wrong note on this album. Buy it, turn the lights down, and enjoy the work of a master at the top of his game.
a masterpiece of sensual music.......2004-12-10
I don't know anything about jazz. But I do know that being a woman, listening to this CD feels like I'm being sofly caressed all over by the man of my dreams. he plays the 'sexophone' so smoothly some notes sound more like whispers.. anyways you get the picture.. it is fabulous background music and to me, this is Jazz in its purest and simplest form. Enjoy!
One of my all-time favorite Hawk cd's.......2004-11-20
I have a ton of Hawk cd's. Yet this is one that I invariably reach for time and time again. It is absolutely flawless from start to finish. There is absolutely not one wrong note on this entire session, not one thing that I would change, except perhaps, out of selfishness, to make it a bit longer. 42 minutes just does not seem long enough.
But if you know the Hawk when he's blowing ballads, you know what to expect. Although it doesn't explicitly say it, this was done for the Moodsville series. So that kind of gives you the vibe on this one. So does the title though. But then you have Tommy Flanagan on the keys, and on upright, you have Wendell Marshall who set things so right on Red Garland's session during "When There Are Grey Skies." The bottom line is that you are in for a treat from the moment you pop this baby in your cd player. Dim the lights, turn up the volume, curl up with your baby, and you know what to do. At the same time, and speaking from experience, this cd is perfect for letting you know, late at night (or early in the morning depending on how you look at things), that "fella, you ain't in things alone and many a good man has done been down exactly the same road you're traveling." It's a comforting reminder, believe me.
So this is a cd for all times, good and bad and it's a dam! beautiful one. You can't pass this one up any longer. Get it today. You'll thank yourself and then kick yourself for not getting it a long, long time ago.
YES...BEAN IS "NUMERO UNO"..........2003-11-25
I really wanted to end my reviewing here on Amazon on a good note...with one last great CD...and this one sort of dropped into my lap, after listening to the LP last night. Then here it was on CD. I love the statement below by the previous reviewer about Hawk being the greatest. I made that same statement this morning to a jazz friend and studio owner. He did not disagree, but he said to put the #1 label on any player is not fair to all the other diverse players. But I can't help it, it's just how I feel. I love Webster, and Carter, and Willie Smith, and Bird, and Trane, and Mobley, and Stan, etc. I just think the Bean is the Best. As the title infers, these are ballads and, oh, how lovely Hawk swoops through them. Again I agree with the sentiment about Coltrane's "Ballads" on 'Impulse'. Even though that is one of my favorite ballad recordings also, I go with this one first as well. This is artistry, mastery, AND ease. I think the 'ease' part is what seperates the two for me. I can't say enough about this one. The review below says it for me. Thanks.
Simple Perfection.......2002-04-26
This is the kind of album that the 'critics' always give three stars because it 'doesn't break new ground.' Granted, there is little virtuosity and no outside harmony. But sometimes it's enough to hear the Master play the melody, and protect the melody for all time. The Hawk can put more intelligence, heart, and soul in a single note than most tenors can squeeze into a whole album of cutting edge jazz. And Hawk's acid sweetness puts all of 'smooth jazz' to shame: the taste of wine compared to cool aid. Like Ben Webster, Ike Quebec, and Gene Ammons, the Hawk is one of the few great balladeers. In fact, he's the one who started it all: he invented THE TONE. A great teacher needs few words: a great musician needs few notes.

Customer Reviews:
Deeply Relaxing .......2006-08-21
If you are having trouble sleeping or relaxing into meditation, Dharma Moon's "at ease" is a peaceful escape into dreams. Many of the artists on this CD write music for film and television, practice yoga, tour, chant, sing and delve into world fusion.
The artists featured include Jamie Lawrence, Drala, Clifford Carter, David Nichtern, Falu, Steve Gorn and Michael Hewett. I love how Falguni sings with the guitars of David Nichtern and how they are in complete harmony. David Nichtern has recorded with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and Billy Crystal. His playing is superior in clarity and beauty.
Each artist selected for this compilation seems to have a deep understanding of the stress of life and how to melt away not only daily stress, but emotional stress that has built up in your body over the years. Like a good yoga routine, each track heals you and nourishes the body. Steve Gorn's Bansuri Flute playing is also especially relaxing and mysterious.
This CD is a perfect compliment to your Yoga practice, an evening massage or daily meditation routine. I find it especially healing at night when I have trouble sleeping or I can't seem to get my mind to stop wandering. Once you start listening to "at ease" you fall into a space where you don't even want to think. The music is such bliss, you only want to focus on relaxing even deeper.
Highly Recommended for Relaxation and Stress Reduction.

A really mellow jazz saxophone album. Hawk @ his best!.......2007-06-01
This is the kind of small-group playing that made jazz groups so enjoyable back in the day. Hawkins plays less aggressively on this one and is backed by a great rhythm section, including Tommy Flanagan on piano. You can close your eyes and see this group in a small jazz club somewhere. Great with friends and a bottle of wine at the end of the day! This one had me once I heard Hawkins do "Then I'll Be Tired of You". Absolutely beautiful old-school tenor playing!!!

The Mark of Distinction The Brand of Cain.......2003-09-30
Simply, a great aggressive rock album from an Aussie band. Heavy riffs and hard hitting drumming. Easily one of my favourite albums of all time. If you like anything with some power, go The Mark Of Cain. Produced by Henry Rollins. They never made it big commercially (Triple J regulars however), but have a huge legion of fans around the country! When you see them live, you are left asking (screaming) for more. Sensational album!!!
A Must Have CD.......2001-02-14
With music like this its no wonder that The Mark Of Cain won Rolling Stones "Heavy Band Of The Year" a few years back.... With catchy, hard hitting riffs and a drum track that brings it all together this album is a must buy for any fan of Helmet, Rollins or anything in this Heavy Alternative Genre.

Very good for learing English Country Dance.......2002-04-22
I have been using this CD for several years to teach English Country Dance, and it is without a doubt the most played in my collection. So many other compilations have just a taste of the melody, maybe enough for one verse, or the tempos are wrong. On this CD, everything is just right. The tempos are lively, yet easy to follow. Each piece has the correct number of repetitions to complete the dance. I particularly like that the dances are arranged by the number of couples. Especially good for performances, where a 2-couple set can move seamlessly from Rufty Tufty to Hearts Ease to Argeers without skipping a beat.
An excellent collection of First Edition Playford dances........2000-06-16
This album is a must-have for any fan of English Country Dances. Every dance on the disc comes from John Playford's influential 1651 edition of the "English Dancing Master", and almost every track is perfectly dancable (I know this from personal experience). The tunes are accurate to the original, the tempos are just right to dance to, and the arrangements are interesting and different from track to track. If you want to listen to what people were dancing to 350 years ago, buy this disc.

An Overview of the Dharma Moon Label Artists.......2005-10-26
This compilation focuses on music and musicians which recording label Dharma Moon has selected for use with massage and relaxation. What they succeeded in doing is creating a very restful CD of music fit for any kind of calming contemplation.
Artists like Emmy Award winning Jamie Lawrence, keyboardist Clifford Carter, Emmy Award winning and Grammy Nominated David Nichtern, composer, percussionist and vocalist Kirby Shelstad, and Master bansuri flute player Steve Gorn, to name a few, make this a Dharma Moon all star collection of some very fine music.
Steve Gorn is the featured artist with the title track `At Ease'. This composition features the haunting sounds of the bamboo bansuri flute. Steve Gorn has played with such well known artists as Paul Simon and Richie Havens. He also appears on the track `Home Again' with the group Drala that also has David Nichtern on guitar. This track combines the best of the bansuri and guitar to give us a warm, inviting day dream with Asian influences.
David Nichtern presents us with two tracks of his own: `Shambhala Moon', an upbeat tune with lovely vocal accompaniment to the guitar by Falguni, and `Simplicity' which focuses on subtle guitar and fiddle by Kenny Kosek.
Clifford Carter's `Earthdream' is a spacey, pensive keyboard offering allowing you to drift. His experience as a keyboardist includes working with such well known names as James Taylor, Natalie Cole and George Benson.
Falguni, who worked on the track with David Nichtern, also has a track of her own - `Subah' which is an excellent platform for her classical Indian vocals. This piece is a chant that will ease you into a very meditative state.
Kirby Shelstad, who is a composer, percussionist and vocalist melds Sanskrit and Tibetan chants with some very western electronica in a piece called "Sangye". This piece is surprising in its feel and blending, and shows the hand of a master in this arrangement.
The final track presents the talents of Michael Hewett in `You Won't Let Anybody Down'. We see the influences of New Age music here, in a classic composition that lifts and pleases in its light guitar rifts.
All in all, a very good choice for music from well known and tested musicians with music that is true to the CD's title. A good choice if you are looking for background music for either body work or meditation, or to ease the stress of everyday work. mafoster

Renewing my faith in the future of punk.......2006-02-11
I bought this CD at an Anti-Flag show because I trust their taste in music more than any other newer punk band out there today (whatever you may define "newer" as). These guys sound like a hybrid of Bad Religion and Green Day (although I dislike Green Day, I mean this in the best possible way). They even play an almost identical guitar riff on the song "Bottom Out" (my favorite track) as Bad Religion does on "Latch Key Kids." Their lyrics are not as intelligent as those written by Greg Graffin, but the break from socio-political punk is refreshing. I always loved Screeching Weasel and it is great to see Vapid has not lost his touch. Other great songs include "Take A Look", "Solitude", and "Whole Lot of Nothing" but I usually listen to the album all of the way through.
Dan Schafer returns.......2002-04-06
Pretty good power-punkish pop brought to you by Dan Schafer, former vocalist of under appreciated Sludgeworth, but you might know him better as Danny Vapid of Screeching Weasel and Riverdales fame. No, its not the most original sounding music in the world, but let's face it, pop-punk, power pop, or whatever you want to call it really stopped being very original years ago. Its kinda like the blues. Everybody is doing something sort of similar, just injecting their own feel on the music and sometimes that's really what it takes. Anyway, its got slight a Bad Religion feel to it (at least in the vocals) and reminds me, at times, a little bit of a darker Green Day. But whatever influences you might hear in the music, you're not gonna sense the Ramones overdose that saturated the Riverdales. Good stuff, nothing earth shattering, but an enjoyable listen. Features a guest rhythm section of B-Face, formerly of the Queers, and Lumley from Screeching Weasel and Squirtgun.

Screw's Bro Holds His Own On This Joint.......2007-04-11
First off, why am I the only one to have reviewed this gem?!? Houston's Al-D hits hard on his 96,97 joint Mind At Ease. A short EP, it holds its own well. The beats are smokin here, produced by various cats, and generally draw upon a melodic G-Funk atmosphere. He is an intelligent MC and makes it known on "I Understand." This song is one of the best joints to come outta H-Town, and among the best period! Ronald Chandler laces a beautiful laid back, soul inflected, keyboard and twangy guitar driven G-Funk beat perfect for the ride. On this song, D Touches on subjects like people gettin on u while u down, missing fathers, and it is nice to see a rapper show respect for women like D does here! He shows that he understands the hardships of life in the hood and perveys it well and digs in your soul. Al-D, Lil Keke, Shorty Mac and ACT get it crunk and loc'd on "Mind At Ease" over a bouncy DJ Gold beat. "Shady Daze" bangs with gangsta flows by D's homie, Dren. He got nice flows over a space boogie beat. "Roll Models" is an interesting track featuring Lil Mel, a young kid who holds it down well on the mic. He discusses why youngsters lose their roll models to jail and other casualties of life. The beat is nice and laidback. "Y U Hate Me" is where D wonders why people waste their time hatin' n talkin smack. He takes the high road while others diss him as he rakes in the scrill and scales up the ladder, all over a nice smooth keyboard synth driven beat. In sum, this album should be a part of your collection, simply.
