Pacific Moon

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Flautist Gary Stroutsos, inspired by time spent at serene Falcon Cove Beach along the Oregon coast, offers up a collection of magical, reflective moonlight music. The eight-part "Pacific Moon Suite" opens the recording with the sounds of surf, flute, and percussion as it moves from "Dawn" to "Pacific Moon (Reprise)," a restful yet contemplative succession of recurring musical motifs. "Nights of Quiet Stars" is an improvised duet with frame drummer Glen Velez that's followed by solo alto-flute interpretations of classic pieces by New Age forefather Paul Horn, and jazz clarinetist Tony Scott. Pacific Moon eloquently calls forth images of vast waters and stately rock formations. It's also fine accompaniment to massage and bodywork. --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best ever compiliation.......2007-02-09

I have just recieved this album and find it both relaxing and uplifting. The various tracks give an exellent overall feeling of the Japnese modern music. There is however one track in particular that effects me emotionally and that is the track br Eri Sugai. The words I do not understand but the tone and melody of both her voice and instrumentals are very moving. To any one who would enjoy Japanese style music I would highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Japanese music.......2007-01-07

A good CD of well played soothing Japanese music. A great CD to chill out with.

2 out of 5 stars A truly mixed bag.......2005-07-26

The Samurai collection is an odd item. Most compilations take their songs from more than two albums... this one does not, apart from one track by Eri Sugai.

The Album Description claims that the album is "music expressive of the Japanese sense of aesthetics..." and "features a rich assortment of traditional musical instruments from Japan." If using Japanese instruments in western music is expressive of Japanese culture, then they must really like new age over there... because this album is mostly new age music.

Uttara-kuru's pieces in particular feel disctinctly western, and both artists use synthesized instruments from time to time. "Tsugaru" actually uses a synth club/trance beat for much of its length, completely throwing the album's narrow sense of continuity out the window.

There are some gems, as medievalcrusadesbabe mentioned, but they do not justify the purchase price.

The music on this album isn't bad... it just isn't great, and certainly wasn't what I was expecting based on the description above. If you need something light with an asian tang to play at the bookstore where you work, then by all means purchase this album. Otherwise, check out the two (okay, three) artists out individually, and don't bother with this unnecessary experiment in record fusion.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the incense sticks included in this, as with other Pacific Moon cds, are of very low quality. They burn fast and may irritate those with allergies. Try Shoyeido incense if your want quality Japanese sticks without the reaction.

4 out of 5 stars Quite Good!.......2004-08-04

I've occasionally taken a fancy for music from around the world (as an alternative to alternative, progressing from progressive, rolling away from rock, etc.)....Asian music is no exception from my interest!

There are several strong pieces on this collection. All of them are good quality and you can easily pick out which one of the three artists in this collage is playing just by listening for a few moments.

The ethereal strains of Yoshida-sama's drum/synth/wind compositions have what I call "long legs" as it seems to take virtually no time to fly through the song. The rolling melody in each is backed up by a strong rolling drum line. It's this percussive precession that make the pieces move so quickly. This music seems to lend itself well to imagery of a lone person atop a horse riding across broad, hilly plains.

Uttara-Kuru's compositions are, as another reviewer put it, much more traditional-feeling. The pieces still get some modern touches here and there, but the focus is generally on the skillful manipulation of a shakuhachi flute.

It's worth a listen if you're even remotely interested. The sample clips don't do it justice, but they give you the general idea!

4 out of 5 stars A Strong Collection.......2004-04-30

Samurai Collection presents us with some of the best Pacific Moon has to offer. Included here are Uttara -Kuru, Kiyoshi Yoshida and Eri Sugai

This mixed disk focuses on Japanese Flute, Asian Drumming and also includes a vocal track by Eri Sugai. The tracks from Uttara Kuru are from the `East Wind' CD. The Kiyoshi Yoshida tracks are from the CD `Asian Drum' and the Eri Sugai track is from her `Mai' CD.

The pieces are chosen for their emotional draw. The drumming tracks are vibrant and forceful contrasting the flute tracks which, while still powerful, are more subtle yet skillfully done. Neither lacks power and effectively stands up to each other.

The titles chose are interesting as well. They draw upon the imagery of Japan, as in `Wings of the Eagle', or the simple elegance of nature as in `Winter Dance'. We see through the eyes of the artist their impressions of their homeland, from the spirituality presented in `The Lucky Spirit' and the vocal sampling in `Konjaku Monogatari' by Eri Sugai, to the day to day visuals in `Wooden Ship'.

While some pieces show definite western influence, there are some very traditional pieces. `First Image' is a solo Koto performance in the traditional style, invoking very strong Japanese imagery.

As always, Pacific Moon includes a booklet in English and Japanese with some short blurbs on the music, so you are not totally lost, and the incense in the CD case to enhance your listening experience.

A very lovely presentation, and one that will introduce you to the artists, give you a good taste of the Japanese musical experience and lay the foundation for future exploration of Japanese World Music.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lavi from Israel.......2006-08-17

Excellent intro to the Eruh - The Chinese violin, also excellent music for relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars I just damn love it!.......2005-10-27

This cd provides serenity, relaxation, calming and an overall peace to myself and the thousands that listen to it... how do I know?.... I work in a hospital Outpatient Radiology Dept and have this cd playing periodically throughout the workday. Many of our patients have terminal diagnosis and comment how they love listening to this cd...

Listening to it almost automatically removes you from present day stress and woes... you find yourself silently wondering of simple life, with beautiful happy things surrounding you...

The Chinese violin... a magnificent sound!... I can't wait to order more from Jia Peng Fang!

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2005-08-04

This cd has everything one would want: creative orchestration, Fang's solo virtuosity, melodies that transport the listener, and outstanding production value. Appeals to classical, acoustic, and new age listeners.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing.......2004-09-17

I live in Asia, and I've heard the Chinese musical instrument "erhu", since I was young. Erhu has always been use for sad songs or accompany sad stories. What Jia Peng Fang does with erhu in this cd is a refreshing and excellent adaptation to other western instrument accompaniment. Also, this cd is truely a great compilation of the best songs from 2 other of his cds. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Jia Peng Fang (Erhu).......2004-08-29

This album is a compilation based on three previously released albums of Jia Peng Fang: 'Faraway...', 'River' and 'Rainbow'.

There is only one new track - No. 7 - 'Bokyo'.

I recommend this album to those customers, who have never heard a beautiful relaxing Asian music of Jia Peng Fang, as well as to those connaisseurs who would like to make a pleasant gift to their friends.

Please note that by the time of this review, Jia Peng Fang relased 2 new CDs - 'Sho' and 'Roman'. A few weeks ago, he released his first DVD with live concert. For the time being these new CDs and the DVD are available only in Japan... But, I know for sure, that sooner or later, they will be released in USA as well. Keep checking...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

5 out of 5 stars The Mario Lanza Collection.......2006-11-10

I had forgotten just how beautiful a voice from the past was. It is a wonderful collection

4 out of 5 stars The MARIO LANZA Collection.......2006-08-19

extract from most important LPs. Brilliant sound quality from RCA. Also included are soundtrack recordings from some of his movies. The are several reissues from Mario Lanza but this one is a collection you should have.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Relaxing.......2007-07-27

This is one of the most wonderful Asian CDs I've heard. It's peaceful and relaxing. Thank you!!

5 out of 5 stars I don't like New Age Music.......2006-03-26

But this is good music. I got this to do Tai Chi to and it works great . I've bought Cd's that are supposedly for Tai Chi and the flow required just isn't there. This cd is not only smooth and flowing enough for Tai Chi, but also 'quiet' and soft enough for meditation, and at the same time just nice enough to put on at home or in the car and just LISTEN to. It never sounds repetitive or too minimal , and yet it doesn't change so drastically in tempo or tone that Tai Chi or meditation is adversely affected. I love it and very highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Breathing Spaces.......2006-03-09

Hypnotic ~ this is the utmost best albulm. Her music is breath-taking. It mentally catures you, takes you away to a magical place, then leaves you with a tingeling sense gladness. I listen to it all the time. I wish Jiang Xiao-Qing had more CD's ... I'd buy them all.

5 out of 5 stars Music that touches your soul.......2005-06-17

Absolutely brilliant and peaceful.
If you can combine "calming, touching, heartwarming, soothing" into one word, let me know so I can describe just how good this CD is!

In Japan and China, New Age music is often produced with the same attitude they've applied to robotic manufacturing--and it sounds like it. The artists are faceless and the music is generic. But a label called Pacific Moon may be changing that. Jalan Jalan's Bali is one of the most haunting albums of the year. This Japanese group takes the sounds of the Balinese gamelan (although the slow cadences are more Javanese), and with pianos, flutes, small percussion, and environmental sounds, they loop melodic cycles into a deftly subtle fabric. There's an austerity and simplicity of form that owes much to Brian Eno's Music for Airports, with its sense of elegiac repose and resigned melancholy, particularly evidenced in tracks like "Firefly Sanctuary." The canon form, in which most of these pieces are written, and its stately pace make this music seem like it could go on forever, and you wish it would. --John Diliberto

Album Description

The music of the gamelan playing softly in the backgound, the blue sky, quiet sea, and crimson setting sun. Welcome to a day in Bali - guaranteed to relax and soothe.

To enhance your enjoyment of the music, fragrant incense sticks are included in the spine of the CD jewel case.

(Also try "Bali dua" by this artist!)

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Peace.......2007-02-06

There is a reason this CD has not received anything less than 5 stars. It is absolutely one of the best I have heard in the genre.
I have to agree with another listener...the beauty here is in the sparseness of the music. Stark, moving, with a melancholy beauty, it is one of those CDs that you just never want to end. Sit down after dark and light a candle...this music will take you to a far off tropical shore and leave you so relaxed and at peace that you won't be able to get out of your chair. I can't recommend this one enough.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME MUSIC FOR MASSAGE.......2006-03-19

I am an LMT always on the lookout for great massage music and this CD is the BEST!!!! I purchased one of the Detaching the World CD's and was very disappointed in it. This CD has become my absolute favorite and my clients have all commented on the relaxing quality it possesses. They all want me to keep it in stock to sell! Truly amazing music....very different....yet PERFECT for massage!!!! I can't say it enough! My clients and I are happier people thanks to this amazing CD.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable, otherworldly, sublime.......2004-09-28

This music is beautiful, truly transporting. A music of absolute connection to Source Energy. One of my favorite CD's in my collection of over 500. Thank you, Jalan Jalan.

5 out of 5 stars fans of the chill unite!.......2004-06-02

this ,needless to say,is one of my favorite "relax"cds out of my collection of nearly 900 discs.it ranks right up there with shrin terrai, aphex twin's ambient cd,buckethead's "colma","electric tears",and death cube k albums, robert rich, and steve roach.if any of these rings a pleasent tone to you,get "bali" by all means!!!
ps:this music will help you save $-you'll never need sleeping pills again!

5 out of 5 stars Lovers of ambient, you MUST buy this cd!.......2004-01-04

As a huge consumer of REAL ambient music (you know, minimalist, space music, new age, buddhist stuff--not the trip-hop crap that touts itself under that category) this is one of my most prized possessions. If you're a fan of transoceanic, 2002, Constance Demby, or any of the other ambient gurus, THIS is the CD to buy. (You gotta love the incense sticks that come packaged within the spine of the CD case--better buy it new to get these.)

This is great relaxing "background" music. Unobtrusive, interesting, and exotic. Loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Mood Music.......2002-01-07

I found this album to be a wonderful arrangement of different artists and moods that are ideal to do power yoga to, as well as for contemplative listening. It is mostly instrumental, although there is one chant akin to Buddhist chants. Unlike many of the traditional yoga CD's, this does not go on endlessly on any one tack, and you could just as easily imagine listening to this at happy hour while looking out across the ocean.

This is my second purchase of this CD. The first one was destroyed by an errant CD player.

5 out of 5 stars LA MUSICA DE LA AGUAS AZUL.......2000-07-16

Pacific Moon is a groundbreaking label, based in Tokyo and Seattle. This recording is a fine introduction to some of their recording artists. It is an eclectic showcase of talents. The track "TEINSAGU NU HANA" is a pop song sung in beautiful Japanese & English, it is a unique track. The two tracks from UTTARA-KURU are wonderful & display their wide range as artists well. MIZUYO KOMIYA has two tracks, one being the amazing epic piece "TSUGARU", this track is about 10 minutes in length and it is a great arrangement. HAE has the buddhist monk based track, it is so spectacular. Also spectacular is the song "HANNYA SHINGYO". A great compilation from a new label with the great idea to enclose small incense sticks in the clear spine of each CD. Everytime I get this CD out to play, I am hit with a great fragrance. Of course, the music is good too.

Like my title if I was writting a book which I am, come to think of it, I love to listen to music as the plots, story & characters form from simple to complex. Just added this to my collection, they can help tell a tale on certain points in my book. Kiyoshi Yoshida are my favorites. After a stressfull day or wanting to relax, these tracks can help you with that. I even plan to use some in my photoshoots. At times models can mellow and get in the mood, which this cd can do.

The pipa is a four-stringed lute that immediately signals its Asian origins with microtonal scales and note bends. Shao Rong, a Chinese musician living in Japan, makes the most of these characteristics on Orchid. Born in Shanghai, China, Rong is a classically trained musician whose forte has been folk music and new classical music, including the compositions of Tan Dun. On Orchid, producer Seiichi Kyoda places Rong in a more contemporary music setting. A member of the world fusion group Uttara-Kuru, Kyoda wrote all the music and arrangements on Orchid, and he shows a penchant for light melodies and breezy arrangements that heighten the pipa's natural tendency toward sweetness, especially when Rong affects a mandolin-like tremelo. Kyoda surrounds her with ghuzeng zithers, tizi, and shakuhachi flutes, and the erhu, a Chinese violin played by Jia Peng Fang. Kyoda also works some darker tones on the electro-tabla driven grooves of "Precious Moon," a reconfiguration of a traditional song, and the dynamic "One More Tale." The latter piece centers on a piano ostinato phrase that lays the road for a cinematic journey into the night. --John Diliberto

Album Description

Experience the lovely resonance of the pipa (Chinese lute) masterfully performed by virtuoso, Shao Rong. The shimmering, melancholy melodies evoke a calm and peaceful mood, and lead you to dream of foreign and exotic lands.

To enhance your enjoyment of the music, incense sticks are included in the spine of the CD jewel case.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyably soothing.......2006-07-29

I searched for this CD because I had heard one compelling song on the radio, Bamboo Dance. What a delight to be able to hear more of this talented artist's work. A combination of eastern and western instruments that result in beautiful calming music. I also purchased Orchid II which is equal to the original.

I put on the CDs, light a few candles (or the inscense included with them, grab a book and relax at the end of a stress filled day. Heaven.

5 out of 5 stars THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS.......2005-11-22

LISTENING TO "ORCHID" AND "ORCHID 2" MOTIVATED CERTAIN WORDS INTO MY CONSCIOUSNESS: SERENITY, ADORATION, VENERATION, SWEETNESS, AFFECTION, AESTHETICS AND THE IDEA THAT LOVE MIGHT EXIST. BUT AS MILES DAVIS ONCE SAID "ITS THE WAY THE MUSIC MAKES YOU FEEL". ONE NO LONGER NEEDS TO JOG FOR AN OUTPOURING OF ENDORPHINS AND TRANQUILITY. SHAO, IN A MOST REFINE MODE FREES THE TIME; JUST THIS ONENESS WITH ALL WHO BELIEVE IN COEXISTENCE. TO HEAR THIS MUSIC IS TO BELIEVE-ITS REAL.

5 out of 5 stars MEDITATE TO THIS............2005-10-11

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, TRAVEL FAR AWAY IN YOUR HEART AND MIND LISTENING TO THIS ONE. IT SPEAKS FOR IT'S SELF...TRY IT. JUST LIKE SPENDING THE DAY IN THE ORIENT, HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR A VERY
ROMANTIC EVENING TO REALLY SET THE MOOD AND TAKE YOU TO ANOTHER
LEVEL.

Album Description

Asia. An ancient and mysterious land. Filled with dichotomies of passion and serenity, gentleness and harshness, intensity…and grace. It is an intricate interweaving of qualities, born of time, tradition, and culture, and this essence is reflected in its land, its people and its music.

"Graces of Asia" is a compilation album by five virtuoso women artists from Asia, which beautifully expresses the complexity of the Asian soul. The chords of the erhu, ghu zheng, pipa, and koto vibrate with a sorrowful melancholy air, conveying a sense of purity in the resounding tones. The notes of the piano ring clear and poignant, and the multi-layered vocal harmonies are stirring. Weaving a fine tapestry of sounds, these artists and their instruments evoke the richness and beauty of Asia in the hearts of the audience.

The songs are deeply and quietly moving, created from an energy that is at once both subtle and powerful. With simple elegance, the music of these five women embodies an abiding softness, strength, and spirit. Truly, they are "Graces of Asia."

To enhance your enjoyment of the music, fragrant incense sticks are included in the spine of the CD jewel case.

This is a great CD. Peaceful, calming, mysterious music. Especially good songs are Bamboo Dance and Sea Wind. Very talented musicians.

Wow.. what a good CD, if you want to dabble and get a sense of different artists, or if you have a collection and want a nice little "best of collection" - GET THIS CD! It has a great blend of styles, from the funky Bamboo dance ( which became my favorite on the CD) to the relaxing subtued tones of the local instruments, styles and just pure bliss of the music.

There is one track that I don't like too much but I will throw that out and STILL give it FIVE stars!

try it, you will like it! :)
