Natives [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
This collaboration with new age keyboard star Peter Kater is the album that introduced Nakai mainstream record buyers. On its release, Natives stayed on Billboard's New Age Chart for almost a year, paving the way for the current renaissance in the Native flute. Once again the music is totally improvised, with Kater's romantic melodies and fat, left-hand chord clusters on the concert grand, providing a fertile environment for Nakai's flights of improvisational fancy. And although Kater is an impressive piano stylist, this is clearly Nakai's show; the brittle tones of his Eagle-bone whistle, and his measured chanting to the accompaniment of an Algonquin turtle rattle always move the music to a higher plane. --j. poet

Natives Nakai and Kater.......2007-01-15
For me, R. Carlos Nakai and Peter Kater created one of the most Perfect pieces of music ever. Natives is an essential collaboration of two gifted musicians that transcends genre, nationality, or heritage. I have been playing this tape/CD for over 15 years and have never gotten tired of IT!
There IS an Universality about/through this music that touches, re-members, connects all this planets souls.............Natives.
Meditative and peaceful..........2004-01-04
I bought this on a whim and am so glad I did. R. Carlos Nakai's flute and chanting and Kater's piano seem fluid together. There are some beautiful harmonies that cause me to relax and forget about the worries of life for a while. It's moody and often brooding yet it's lovely music. Good for a nice change from the norm.
OK but reject the shamanism and the cult spirituality.......2003-10-16
I love Peter Kater and most of his music without occult or shaman titles in them, because the truth is, it is part of a cult thinking and spiritual darkness. I studied it for years as I did other cults and I know people firsthand who were involved with the illuminated cult and "ism. Otherwise he has an excellent talent and beautiful spirit in music and melodic creation on the piano and you cannot deny that he has a God-given gift, if and when he ever acknowledges that is truly where it comes from. This one is one I would not buy from him simply because it centers around his deceptive occult beliefs. I do not judge but I say this, with such an awesome talent, it would be better if he understood what shamanism really was and took the road that leads to real eternal life. Otherwise his music is really beautiful and I praise his talent for having music that reflects spiritual beauty in other regards of the heart and peace, which is fine.
A Fusion that Works.......2002-12-17
I received this disc as a gift, having never heard of Peter Kater and only being remotely familiar with R. Carlos Nakai (I had "Canyon Trilogy"). This rapidly became a desert island top 10 selection for me. This is so much more than just a flute and piano, but rather a full-fledged spiritual journey.
The first cut, "Centering," is aptly named as it prepares you for the spiritual travel that is to follow. Each subsequent cut takes you on a geographic/metaphorical journey, and if you listen closely, you will "hear" the places/feelings described by the music. After completing the circuit and "Recentering," you will once again be at peace with all of creation. From start to finish, the music is delivered with great sensitivity and authenticity--a true musical epiphany.
Buy the disc, find 47 minutes without distraction, put on the headphones, and emerge a new person
Not all there.......2002-12-13
It seemed like the performers were performing from thier instruments and not thier emotions. In the shadow of thier release HONORABLE SKY it is also good to add to the collection. But it isn't as soulfully impressive.

Customer Reviews:
Restless Natives, best soundtrack!.......2004-03-12
I love this soundtrack to the movie "Restless Natives." It's well worth it just for this alone. I wish they had produced more soundtracks like this in their years. I suppose they still can, but it just wouldn't be the same without Stewart, may he rest in peace. I love this soundtrack! I just wish the movie were available on DVD in the US.
Finally stumbled on a Diamond!.......2002-08-04
I stumbled on this one,I knew it was out there on the web but never really expected to be lucky enough to find a CD store owner with enough old fashioned common sense to actually have one in stock, I really bought it for the title track which I had on very old 12 inch vinyl. This is a gem and as soon as you turn down the lights, rip the top off a McEwans extra and skip to track 6 on CD 1 you will be transported to another place , I had to wait about 25 minutes until the passage came in and although there is a different , instrumental rendition early in track 6 the version with lyrics is the best, Adamsons voice sounds the best it could and better than any other song I have heard of BC, worth the search.Other stand outs are Äll fall together, (also released as "giant" on a B side but with no vocals), On the shore, plus many others. If you see this available here, grab it QUICK!
Thank you.
As good as anything they've done.......2002-02-09
This is really good. If you liked anything Big Country has done then have no fear buying this, its all good. In the liner notes it claims that some of the songs have an "unfinished" feel to them. If anything I think thats a plus. As much as I like Big Country I sometimes thought were a little overwrought. The songs here show that Stuart Adamson and co can write really powerful songs, and just let those songs speak for themselves. Its a little mellower and more cheerful than some their early stuff, and I still haven't heard a better rythmn section than what Big Country kicks out! These guys fill the valleys and shake the hills!
This is a must for all die-hard fans.......2001-05-14
I bought this CD collection because I absolutely have to have every Big country album ever made. "Restless Natives" will put you "alone upon the hills and snow" and will guide you "through summer sun and winter snow" where the "eagle was lord above". If you are a big fan of BC you will LOVE this CD.
One in a million find...........2000-11-22
"Restless Natives & Rarities" is excellent. Having been a BC fan since the early eighties, i jumped all over this collection of true, spirited classics from this Scottish band. The soundtrack to "Restless Natives" (an indie film from Scotland) is worth the price of the CD alone. The soundtrack is amazing...taking you deep into the heart of the Big Country sound and musicianship. The ghostly moan of the guitars...that bagpipe sound filtering through like a floating image on a foggy night...the pounding, heavy drum section....the beautiful interwoven bass lines...the soaring vocals...the powerful images of the frontier, the harsh seasons, the clouds of grey, "the winter sky" and of course the words...those lyrics....i know, i sound ridiculous. but i'm telling you, if you love Big Country...or if you've only heard a couple of tunes from this great band ("In a Big Country", "Look Away") this 2-CD set is a must...great b-sides previously unreleased ("The Longest Day", "Kiss The Girl Goodbye", "On The Shore") and of course, the soundtrack to "Restless Natives" that will leave your jaw on the floor for about 36-minutes ....i can't get this CD out of my stereo system...i have it at work...i have it at home...it never leaves my car...it is the ultimate collection of classic Big Country...Restless Natives and all.

Civilized Natives Rock and Rule with Closing In CD.......2004-03-30
The first time I listened to this CD, I said to myself, "You know, guitars are so essential to the rock sound."
The second time I listened to it, I realized that drums and vocals are not to be taken lightly, so I listened to it a third time for content, and realized that decent, well thought out lyrics were something I'd been missing in my music listening sessions this past decade.
Glenn Vignolo, Civilized Native number 1, lead guitarist, vocalist, and overall genius behind this first effort, has done his homework. And fortunately for music lovers everywhere, after he did his homework, he and his bandmates got together to cook up a little civilized magic in the recording studio. The guitar work would have made George Harrison smile.
Glenn's wife, affectionatly known as number 2 in some places, delivers hauntingly beautiful vocals, and plays one of the best tambourines I've heard since Davey Jones.
The rest of the band? Well, what can I say. The drums are on target every beat, the bass is always supporting rather than intruding, and the keyboards are celestial.
The entire CD, from Closing In to um, the last song, is an experience you -- well -- just have to experience.
Go on do it. Buy it. Now. No, really, a change will do you good.
MORE!!!!! MORE!!!!!.......2003-10-12
After listening to this album closely I have concluded that it encapsulates a lot of styles into a new genere. The whole thing has a familiarity to it that being new, I know it shouldn't have. A stand out example of this is the song "Blue". You get a wintery feeling from it. It's like your memories of snow and Christmas but hardly as trite as your average holiday song makes it. It's something internal. The harmonies are to die for. Another good song is "Pale". There's a drama to it that makes it so appealing in the flat musical landscape that is current pop/rock. Good build up, climax and resolve. Then there's the appropriately titled "To Make an End" which finishes things off. It manages to take the male-female duet to a new level without ever seeming like some "romantic comedy duet of the month" cheese. It's the story of two lovers torn apart from what I hear. Therese Florian (not featured nearly enough on this album) is a haunting vocal presence. Glenn Vignolo, sings with her and the two really sound like they're in love. It also sounds like a good theme song for a James Bond movie. Tall, dark and eastern. The title track sounds like mid era Lennon Beatles with the love child of Eric Clapton and Brian May on guitar. Psycadelia with a little funk thrown in the middle. If the next album is as good as or better than this and there's any justice I'll be seeing them in concert. Hopefully I catch at least one small venue show before they take off. Good piece of work.
title?.......2001-12-19
Some of the best music I've heard in years. The sound is at once both reminiscent and fresh. They remind me of some of the early Beatles' finest work, with a little Alan Parsons and Gerry Rafferty thrown in for good measure. Try it. You'll like it!
Great First Release!.......2001-01-29
The first thing that strikes the listener is the stunning vocal harmonies. The second thing is the skillful instrumentation. The thing that keeps me coming back is the songs. They are classic and yet contemporary. The lyrics are inventive, honest and sometimes show an off-beat sense of humor. You can tell that Glenn Vignolo(the group's main songwriter)has had a steady diet of the Beatles, Roy Orbison, ELO and even Tom Petty and Crosby, Stills and Nash. I highly recommend this album to anyone who dispairs over the lack of melodic rock and roll in today's music scene. Emotion, that seemingly long lost commodity, is back so you don't have to raid your old albums to find it. Listen to this album in the dark with headphones on and go on the Natives trip. You won't want to come back.

Buy This, You'll Be Surprised!.......2005-10-22
If you're not familiar with this band, you are in for a very pleasant surprise. I got hooked on Crease when I found their first album, "Vindication", in a bargain bin at my local record store. Man, Talk about a mind trip, "Vindication" took me on one and never let me go! Which brings me to this album. The boys in this band found a grammy winning producer (Charles Dye), cranked up the amp and were on their way! "Only Human" is a more mature album than "Vindication" and the band comes through stronger and more refined. I warn you though, this is hard rock with the emphasis on HARD. If you like cranking up the volume you'll love this album. If you're into edgy, cutting lyrics you'll love this album. If you longed for the days when radio was ruled by Ozzie, Nazareth, and Kiss you'll definitely love this album! If you're a young skater guess what? You'll love this album! I'm serious, this is as good as rock gets! Buy "Vindication" also and you'll double pump your brain with so many catchy mind blowing lyrics you won't know how or when you'll get back to earth!

Sonic Headache.......2007-07-09
Nothing but confusion, chaos, dissonance ... like getting your teeth drilled but without the all the fun. Emperor's new clothes.
Evan Parker Trio + Crispell = divinity.......2004-10-06
_Natives and Aliens_ is the monumental first recording of the longstanding, ever-developing trio of Evan Parker (saxophone), Barry Guy (bass), and Paul Lytton (percussion) with one-of-a-kind free-improvisation goddess Marilyn Crispell (piano).
Listening to this, it is remarkable how fully integrated Crispell is in the trio, and how well she is able to crack the extra-sensory communication linking Parker, Guy, and Lytton. Crispell is one of the few pianists, who can come close to Cecil Taylor in terms of grand power, and her capabilities serve her well and enable her to flourish as more than a guest, but another member of the trio. Even while breathlessly unleashing her percussive piano storm, Crispell's playing explores depths of color and emotion in this framework of musicians that perhaps even she was surprised herself. Stimulating and unpredictable opportunities for interplay are seized on all fronts, and you can hear the challenge she brings to the other three. Parker/Lytton/Guy are already a formidable force on their own, demonstrably capable of breathtakingly powerful, revelatory improvisations, and with a pianist of Crispell's caliber, they respond by sharing their mutual collegiality with her, embracing her and willfully expanding their interactive dynamics.
_Natives and Aliens_ is unbelievable. The album is basically a seminar on High Art. I realize this all sounds very fanboyish and super-hyped. But really, it's just that good. Also check out _After Appleby_, more first-class improvisation from the same group.
