Album Description
A beautiful collection of great Jewish Music. Classics by Ernest Bloch and Max Bruch, mixed with rarely heard gems by Maurice Ravel, Zavel Zilberts, Jacob Wasilkovsky, and David Meyerowitz. "Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt", a Yiddish Theatre gem, is alone worth the price of admission for its mixture of pathos and humor. The songs by Zilberts are an important and beautiful part of the Jewish music legacy that must be heard.

"Beautiful"? More like "funereal". Very dark and depressing........2007-07-12
"Beautiful"? I did not find anything about this music "beautiful". Most of it is very dark and depressing. A few of the songs sound like something you would hear in a horror movie. Now I know why they do not provide samples to listen to. The only two songs I found pleasant to listen to were "Zilberts: Reb Dovid'l" and "Meyerowitz: Gelt (Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt)". I am very disappointed. Admittedly, I purchased this CD without really knowing what to expect. I just trusted the previous reviews. Try to find samples to listen to before you purchase this CD to see if you like this kind of music.
BEAUTIFUL!!.......2006-01-07
I love this CD and have bought several for friends. Music is so very beautiful. Toda raba!!!!
Encore! Encore!.......2004-01-13
Perhaps no other instrument captures the sad-sweet contemplative mood of classical Jewish music like a cello. Is this because so many Jewish composers have written for the cello, that we think of it as a "Jewish" instrument? Or did they choose the cello because it sings so beautifully of the Jewish soul? Like the chicken and the egg, this question may never be answered -- but it doesn't really matter. This superb music is an important part of our Jewish legacy in its own right.
On this CD, cellist Richard Locker, accompanied by Susan Walters on piano, brings together 12 classical Jewish pieces, some well-known and others not so, in an absolutely magnificent performance -- so beautiful, that it literally brought tears to my eyes. The CD starts out with a niggun (Hasidic tune) by Ernest Bloch, then moves into to the dark, somber strains of Max Bruch's "Kol Nidre." From there it rises in mood, to end with a playful Yiddish theater piece, "Wie schecht is ohne Gelt" (How awful it is to be without money!) Included is the rarely heard "Meditation Hebraique" by Bloch, which he dedicated to Pable Casals, and a trio of pieces by the lesser-known composer, Zavel Zilberts (1881-1949), who directed the Choral Society of New York and played with the Metropolitan Opera. All of this is performed on a cello made by Nicolo Gagliano, dated 1780. To hear such a fine old instrument played by a talented, sensitive musician is truly a mechayah! (pleasure)
Superb!.......2003-12-05
I recently received this CD as a gift and was simply overwhelmed by how beautiful it is. The music, the playing, and the recording are all stunning. The interpretations of the well known works are magnificent and the pieces by Zilberts and Meyerowitz are a revelation. I cannot recommend this recording highly enough.
A superb collection.......2002-11-17
Jewish Cello Masterpieces is magnificent! This is a soulful performance by a true cello master. I look forward to more work from Richard Locker!

A magical masterpiece.......2005-08-30
On this exceptional album, Lisbeth incorporates world influences, irresistible pop hooks and folk sensibility to create a masterful and achingly lovely listening experience. From the first strains to the last, these songs will open your eyes and heart to Creator's presence, the divinity within all things, and the power of believing in love. It's truly a magical, holy voyage.
The album opens and closes with "Reveal", a beautiful, mysterious and tender piece, in which Lisbeth's angelic vocals sparkle. "To Love And Be Loved" is a testament to the power of true love, with it's message that "we're all here to love and be loved." "Give" is a stunning song, with a wonderful Celtic feel, fantastic uplifting lyrics, and such sincerity! "All Of These Years" is a song about second chances; with a fabulous pop vibe and a chorus you'll sing all day! "Grace" is my favorite song from the album, showcasing Lisbeth's range, and with lyrics that will bring you to tears. It's a powerful anthem! "Surrender" is a tender piece about giving your needs over to Creator, and Lisbeth's delivery is truly superb. "No One But You" has great orchestration, a catchy chorus, and as always, wonderful lyrics. "Stones" is all about forgiveness and release, and the lyrics will take your breath away with their sheer sincere intensity. The title track, "Passionate Voice", is a magical song about how our ancestors understood the union and oneness of God and humanity. It is very thought provoking, to be certain.
Lisbeth is a fantastic singer, and a glorious lyricist. Her passion is evident in every song, as is her beautiful spirit. Join her on this awesome journey. You'll be so glad you did!!! Worth every cent. A magical masterpiece. Highly recommended!!!
Music of angels.......2005-08-13
Estas canciones es como si las hubieran escrito los ángeles y las cantara un ángel sobre la tierra Lisbeth Scott. Merece la pena comprar su música.
Powerful.......2005-03-24
My wife and I heard a cut on the radio and were immediately moved. Stunningly beautiful. Healing. Hauntingly spiritual. Lisbeth Scott's voice speaks to my soul and evoke its peace.
Passionate Voice.......2005-02-17
Lisbeth Scott, with her latest album, has created something completely sacred. Full of nature and passion, this is amazing, ethereal music.
Reveal: A haunting, lush melody. Lisbeth Scott's voice is really beautiful in this, with almost a breathy quality. 5/5
To Love and Be Loved: A very attractive song. The chorus is gorgeous. "Heaven knows, is the road to peace, heaven knows, that we're all here to love and be loved." 4/5
Give: Very nice and catchy. Echoes around in your head. "Oh love the sun is not so warm as when your soul meets mine. All darkness lifts to heaven's light and shines and shines for you." 4/5
All of These Years: This is one I constantly find stuck in my head. Although the tune can get slightly irritating, the lyrics are great. "May Queen, twirling in a pretty dress." 4.5/5
Grace: Lovely lyrics, nice instrumentals. Though Lisbeth can reach the high notes in this song, it makes my voice hurt just thinking about the strain. Other than that, beautiful and ethereal, yet powerful. "I lift my hands to catch the falling rain...I'm walking through a dream of ecstasy." 5/5
Surrender: Absolutely beautiful. Strikes a chord in my memory, brings back lovely visions. Wow. "Only darkness when I burn for the sun. All I hear is silence when I ask for song." 5/5
No One But You: Could have been trite, but the fresh tune bails it out. "Guess today's a less than perfect day. Wait it out until the fog has cleared." 4/5
Stones: A bit depressing, but the superb instrumentals reconcile it. The lyrics are wonderfully wise. "And so I can forgive these little stones. I'll put my own down." 3/5
Passionate Voice: The best here. Haunting, gorgeous soundscape, with lyrics as old as time. "In the beginning. Passionate Voice. Called from the arms of love to rejoice. One peace. One soul. One God. One home. One sound. One tear. One hand. No fear." 6/5
Reveal (Reprise): Almost Celtic in instrumentals. Completely amazing, unfolding slowly over time. Shakes you to the bone in a wonderful way. 5/5
Soothing and Peaceful.......2004-12-30
Lisbeth Scott continues her legacy of soothing, peaceful, but passionate artistry. Close your eyes and allow yourself to be gently beckoned into revealing lyrics and innocence.

Grant Lee Genius.......2007-08-02
I've of course heard of Grant Lee (Buffalo/Phillips)but this was my first purchase, and its been on high rotation ever since. Its just such good, feel good music & I would like to punish myself physically for not having got into this before. This may not even be the best but i will now buy them all on the basis of this album. I love it, seriously, I love it. Don't ask me song titles, the whole album just swings on thru and its starting over and I let it go again, and the whole thing just sounds better and better. I dunno is it Duncan Sheik meets Beck? I guess if it could be better than maybe a studio band with a real live drummer, but I'm being picky. Grant Lee, please include me in your (should be) legions of fans.
Exceptional!.......2006-02-24
Was always a big fan of Grant Lee Buffalo, "Jubilee" totally rules, and Grant Lee on his own rocks too!
"Like A Lover" is one of the simplest songs, but conveys so much feeling, it knocks me out everytime I hear it.
"Mobilize" the beat always makes me think of Portishead, such a cool song
"Spring Released" is one of those songs that's timeless. It's like religion to play this track coming into the sunny season.
Do yourself a favour and buy anything of this exceptional musician that you can get your hands on. C'mon Grant Lee, give us another!!
rhythm + romanticism + melody = Mobilize.......2005-07-14
"Epic masterpiece..." "Channeling John Lennon" These are descriptions from other reviews, both puzzling to me. There's nothing epic about this, nor is there the slightest resemblance to Mr. Lennon -- who composed music in an entirely different vein. This is a personal album, sometimes quiet and sometimes hypnotically beat-driven. As far as I can tell GLP played and sang everything himself. This is like his earlier Ladies Love Oracle, but juiced up with rhythm. Acoustic guitars and electric keyboards predominate, with the sythetic percussion.
Mobilize doesn't really hang together as a unified piece. It is more a collection of songs, most of which are very good. The best of them are dreamy, entrancing, and soothing. Computer-sequenced beats give a pulse to many of the tracks. The lyrics are specific enough to be enticing but vague enough to allow your own interpretation. But take advantage of the free amazon.com download of See America and you will hear for yourself the strengths of this Grant-Lee Phillips effort. It will tell you ten times more than I could ever say in a review. Besides, there are only two kinds of music: good and bad. And you and I will never completely agree on which is which. At least give this a try. Was See America Grant-Lee's twist on Simon & Garfunkel's "...all come to look for America"? It seems so to me, and I think it is equally clever and anthemic.
See America, Sleepless Lake, and April Chimes showcase Phillips' ability to write a haunting melody, which is something of a lost art. See his Ladies Love Oracle CD for more of the same.
The other free download, the title track, is probably the least enjoyable tune on the album. It sounds a bit off-kilter, with its minor chords and allusions to war. The other tracks are much less depressing. Spring Released is positively bouyant, as is Beautiful Dreamers. (My grandmother used to play the classic old song Beautiful Dreamer, which GLP deftly incorporates into his own new composition.)
GLP is not trying to push the envelope or pump you up or sermonize. He seeks to entertain, by presenting a little piece of his contempative romantic soul. Treat yourself to some high class pop. Get this album. You can catch glimpses of GLP as the "town troubadour" on the first season of Gilmore Girls, too. That's how I was first introduced to his music.
I lost my first copy of this CD. I can't imagine how. It never left the house. But I had to buy another, because I knew I would miss it. I think you might feel that way about it, too.
Only 500 times over..........2002-11-08
I first heard Grant-Lee when he was part of Grant-Lee Buffalo. A friend made me a tape of "Mighty Joe Moon" about six years ago. I hadn't really thought about Grant-Lee until I saw the Exile Follies tour with Kristen Hersh, Grant-Lee and John Doe. I was so impressed with Grant-Lee that I had to hear more. I downloaded parts of songs from this album and listened to them over and over. I had to buy the album. So I bought it a week ago and have been listening to nothing else but this since. It's on most of the day at work and then on in the car for four or five songs at a time. I truly love this cd, it's a good thing that it's not on tape or the tape would be worn out already.
There is something really catchy about the songs that make you want to listen to them over and over. They also get stuck in your head and you just have to listen to them! "Spring Released," "Sadness Soot" and "Beautiful Dreamers" are the main ones that I keep singing over and over in my head. "See America" has a wonderful romantic sound to it that makes you want to take a road trip. I thought the lyrics seemed really cool at first, then I read the lyrics in the liner notes and realized that they are even cooler than they sound, they are quite poetic.
If you've never heard Grant-Lee, I've learned that you're missing out. He's definitely up there with my faves - PJ Harvey, Kristen Hersh, Tori and Liz Phair. I will definitely be adding more Grant-Lee Phillips to my collection as I can afford it.
Move to this........2002-08-26
Grant Lee Phillips is a top-class singer-songwriter who has a wealth of experience as well as two or three truly great records behind him, and somehow you just knew he wasn't going to disappoint with Mobilize. It finds Phillips embracing a more polished, modern sound than past efforts - accentuated by the classy, breatless pop of the opener 'See America' and similarly impressive 'Humankind'. As the title suggests 'Love's A Mystery' is all mystique and intrigue with Phillips sounding eerily like David Byrne, and is exactly the kind of left-field tunesmithery on the human condition at which he excels.
The real gem here though is 'Sadness Soot' - dizzying in it's magnificence and showcasing just how remarkable Phillips' voice really is - a master of phrasing, mood and expression. As with his Grant Lee Buffalo albums, just when you think you're in for more pop thrills, we get something edgy and challenging like the title track to throw you off the scent. The second half of Mobilize is engaging and interesting, if a little less consistent than the first (though that's a common complaint these days). Still, the bonus track 'Sunday Best' is a rather jaunty closing treat.
For listeners that like their music to be innovative, fresh and just a little outside the square then Mobilize will fit the bill nicely.

Despite her roles in mainstream musicals such as Cats and Chicago, Ute Lemper has never been a typical Broadway baby. Her long association with the works of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, as well as her one-woman shows based on the repertoires of Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich, has always marked her as a maverick in a world overpopulated by bland belters and cute ingénues. Lemper's distinctive voice isn't an instrument for easy listening. At full tilt, it's dangerous and edgy. In subdued mode, it's dark, ironic, and despairing. The cruelty that runs through many of her interpretations is taken on the chin. Lemper deals in defiance rather than submission. With just one, edgily updated Weill song ("Tango Ballad") and a host of contributions from Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Philip Glass, and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon, Punishing Kiss is a modern, bleak look at love in the 21st century. At times the tone is murderous, even apocalyptic ("The Case Continues"). The duet "Split," sung with Hannon, is a grimly humorous riot of punches and counterpunches in a disintegrating relationship. There's fleeting, poignant beauty too, in tracks like Waits's "Purple Avenue." Essential listening for anyone who likes their torch songs blood-stained, not just dampened by a few tears. --Piers Ford
Customer Reviews:
A guilty pleasure..........2006-09-30
Is this woman awesome, or what?
I have to say, this is probably one of my fav's. A very deeply moving, emotionally intense project. I keep coming back to it. It's just absolutely awesome!
Oh so very good.......2003-03-06
I fell in love with Ute Lemper when I heard a recording of her singing Kurt Weill's "Bilbao Song." I know she has her detractors, all of whom argue that other people are better at performing Kurt Weill. These people are idiots.
This album came as a shock for me, as she truly stretches out farther than I had expected. Yes, there is a Kurt Weill song here, taken from the Threepenny Opera, but it's rearranged like you've never heard before - with a drum and bass loop churning underneath lush strings and keyboards (but not cheesy keyboards, mind you).
The rest of the album follows in a similar style, though the instrumentation does subtly change for different composers' songs - most notably the addition of a bandoneon for the two Tom Waits songs.
What is amazing about the album is the sense of continuity running through it, in spite its being a collection of songs of different people. The gem of the album, however, is Nick Cave's "Little Water Song," in which, over a beautiful string section, Ute Lemper lets her theatre training and singing mix freely - producing a performance that simply floors me.
What else is there to say? She's simply amazing
The Best CD of All.......2001-07-11
Simply stunning performance of unusual new songs written expressly for her, entirely captivating, imaginatively written and performed. May not appear to be a 'hit' first time round but you will play it again and again, hear more, find new meanings and so much depth.
It is performed dramatically (not as a routine studio tune and lyric) a most stimulating performance. In many ways it is a 'dark' album, not something you will be able to whistle in the bathroom, and all the better for that. If you are looking for real entertainment, look no further.
Ute has to be the most under-rated artist of the current era, wildly flexible in how she performs, in many ways outrageously kitsch. She has performed this album in a tour, which I was privileged to attend and this underlined just how good she - and the album - is. A 'must buy'. Just wish she had a video/DVD as well!
SWEET TORCH SONG TORTURE.......2001-06-03
The statuesque Ute is a beauty so monumental, she's almost architectural. And she's got a voice and delivery to match, plus on this album, a taste for superb material.
My favourites are the Nick Cave, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits songs, but what is really impressive is how her voice holds together the Scott Walker song Scope J (If one can call it a song).
Anyone who can sing along to, let alone intelligently interpret, such a bizarre and dark little symphony, deserves 5 stars just for the effort. I like my divas dark and brooding, like Nico of Velvet Underground, so Ute fits the bill. Investigate and enjoy!
She Is Never What You Expect.......2001-02-01
We all know Ute Lemper as the foremost interpreter of Weill and art songs, but who would have guessed that she is adept at popular tunes too? Well, let me re-phrase, these songs are not "standards", however, they are written by contemporaries that more people would have heard of than Weill. Nick Cave and tom Waits, for example, are two the lyricists whose music is given life on this album. Let's start with the voice: it has a timbre totally unlike any other that you would have come across in pedestrian music circles. It can be warm, it can be cool (with ice-cold precision), it can be smooth or rough. She does whatever she wants to with her voice and the listener sits there with open mouth, awed by the sheer sound of this woman. She doesn't treat her voice as if it is some precious antique, she slams it around and all for the sake of song. Which brings us to her interpretive gifts: they are ample. When I read some of the lyrics in the booklet, I asked myself how she was going to pull it off but she always did and in an approach at odds with whatever you were expecting. Her song selection is most interesting, the only one I was familiar with prior to my purchase was "Streets of Berlin" which I had heard in the movie BENT. In her version, she is very intimate and quiet at first in a way that out-shimmies Mick Jagger (who sang the song in the movie) but then she gets loud and audacious in a way that is totally in keeping with the song's intent and works with instead of against the melody. My only complaint is that occasionally Ms. Lemper lets her voice get the better of her and crosses *that* line into melodrama. Other than this one small quibble, I recommend this disc for listeners who want to be throttled rather than soothed, to think rather than be spoon-fed. Enjoy... I know I did!

A beautiful voice and beautiful music that grows on you .......2006-11-10
This is my first Connie Dover purchase and I can't wait to buy all the rest of her CDs. How could this artist's beautiful voice and delivery not be in the mainstream. Thank you again Accuradio/Radiocelt! I love Connie's story telling--her voice is so clear that you can understand every word she sings! The Holland Handkerchief, Shady Grove and Fear An Bhata all impress in different ways. Ned of the Hill is a special song that may not be your favorite at first but gets better and better each time you hear it. La Fontaine is sung in french and is emotional and touching--the harmonics are haunting. Connie's supporting musical cast compliment her vocal presentation perfectly.
This is the kind of music that grows on you and just gets better and better with each listen. Connie, when is your next CD coming out?
breath-taking.......2006-07-04
Connie Dover is one of the best celtic singers I have had the pleasure to listen to. I loved the album. I was soothing as well as uplifting.
Evocative, enthralling.......2005-12-07
Here is a wonderful voice, full of purity and presence, singing 11 traditional Irish, Scottish and American songs on 60 minutes of music. This means the songs are longer than the usual 3-minutes-and-out you find on the radio. But frankly I didn't even notice, they are as long as they need to be (except the sweet traditional country tune "Shady Grove", which could be longer).
Connie Dover has a full, clear, rich voice that lets the song shine through even as she lets her voice shape it as it passes. You could not find a greater contrast to a voice like Eva Cassidy's. With Eva, I am sometimes overwhelmed at the stunning power and personality she weaves into her songs, indeed, many have commented that she makes a song her own. Connie Dover makes a song everyone's.
Her voice alone merits 5 stars. But the high quality of the (sometimes melancholy) material and the solid instrumentation are not just bonuses. This is effortless music with lots of musical effort beind it. The song selection is basically from Irish, Scottish and American folk music, with instruments appropriate to the genre. You'll hear some Gaelic and French in the vocals. And always with that pure clear voice.
If you're looking for something away from the rushing waters of American pop music, give her a try. There is a great deal of talent to be found off the main road, here in the backroads of folk music, at its best. "I took the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference." (Robert Frost) Take this road, and see where it takes you.
Love Connie Dover's voice..........2005-07-19
...but haven't gotten into the album yet- in part due to not listening to it enough. I was hoping for a more atmospheric sound as on "Cantus" or "Ubi Caritas" so I think it may take me a while to get used to her more traditional stylings on this album. The country number is neat- a different touch. "Fear an Bhata" is a great opener to the album.
Unsurpassed.......2003-12-30
I still haven't found a Celtic artist I like as much as Connie Dover. Her voice is beautiful, and she never has weak moments. Her diction is perfect, as is her intonation. The instrumental accompaniment always enhances the mood of the song- from piano to fiddle to uillean pipes. Her songs are a nice variety of the older and newer, some with lyrics or melodies she has written herself. The harmonies are beautiful, particularly in La Fontaine. I can't say which of her albums is my favorite, but it might be this one. I listen to all of them frequently.

The first duty of love is to listen........2004-12-04
There isn't anything more refreshing than a musical project like Love. You're taken on a journey as you listen, truly feeling all of the faith and hope that was poured into it over the years by many different people. The beauty is in the simple fact that, unlike so many, Niko is being himself. He is an artist with nothing to hide and everything to share. By releasing this
album he bares his heart and soul to you...all that's asked in return is that you listen.
worth every penny.......2004-11-25
Ever feel that much of the music offerings out there these days are just a bit shallow? Do you find yourself looking for more than just lip-synched candy-apple pop (don't get me wrong there's a place for that too!)?
If you find yourself wanting more in your musical experience, then Niko's LOVE is something for you. I bought it and knew the moment I opened my amazon package and held that box in my hands that this was going to be a ride.
From the artwork, to the writings to the DVD, this thing has a lot to offer. Nothing, however, could prepare me for the music CD... it is just unbelievably beautiful! A splash of fresh vision! It celebrates our humanity and says, "no matter where we find ourselves -- in the deepest chasms of dispair or the highest peaks of happiness -- love is ALWAYS the answer we seek!"

Customer Reviews:

+1/2 -- Moving, original acoustic country-blues.......2006-04-05
This Atlanta-based singer/songwriter/guitarist writes and plays songs that find a "connection between Muddy Waters and Hank Williams." He's not the first to combine acoustic country and blues, but his folksy lyrics and old-timey tinged voice add flavors of artists such as Loudon Wainwright III, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Leon Redbone to the usual battery of blues influences. Backed by acoustic bass and the occasional harmonica, Sheffield's picking (replete with ragtime inflections) and soulful Southern vocals provide the album's musical focus. After a half-dozen albums, this is his first national release, and the eleven originals and two covers (including a reading of Tom Waits' "Invitation to the Blues") stand upon timeless blues progressions. Sheffield's acoustic playing and dynamic vocalizing will draw you right in. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]
