If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

harem .......2007-05-28
As usual a quick and effecient service ,especially for people who live abroad.Keep up the excellent work John Williams.
New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12
I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.
Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30
I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.
No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01
I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.
Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18
Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

While the sales of Sarah Brightman's ambitious, Middle Eastern-themed 2003 album Harem may have fallen short of its predecessor, the veteran UK chanteuse's popularity as a live performer has only mushroomed. This live recording of her ambitious, sold-out Harem World Tour engagement at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Arena is testament to that appeal, begging the question: Will Brightman become the Grateful Dead of classical crossover? Indeed, abetted by the rich sonic textures of longtime producer/collaborator Frank Peterson, the worldbeat conceits of her recent studio recordings are folded into a larger, even more expansive live vision here. Brightman's overt dramatic instincts and oft-chaemeleonic vocal abilities drive a slate of material that stretches from the Arabian Nights/Madame Butterflypastiche of Harem's seductive "It's A Beautiful Day" through surprisingly effective classical/rock reinventions of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and
The Moody Blues' chestnut "Nights in White Satin" to expected classical bowings "Nessun Dorma" and the obligatory nod to
"Phantom of the Opera"

AMAZING! She is so much better live!.......2006-12-02
This CD rocks! This is Sarah Brightman on her Harem World Tour, and this performance was recorded at her stop in Las Vegas. The first two tracks, "Kama Surta" and "Harem Overture" debut from her newest album, entitled HAREM. The two tracks are connected, but in the actual Harem Tour, the full piece "Harem" is sung. If you go to www.youtube.com and type in "Harem Tour" in the Search Bar, you can see live videos. I would prefer that the album has placed "Harem" instead of these other two tracks. The third track, "It's A Beautiful Day", is from Madame Butterfly, written by Puccini. This version is Brightman's twist, which some more pop and some English. It's pretty cool. The fourth track on the album, "Dust in the Wind" is from EDEN, an amazing album. Track 5 is, "Who Wants to Live Forever", and it seems as though Brightman never creates a tour without putting this piece in it. It's a beautiful tribute to Queen's rendition. Track Six is "Anytime, Anywhere", also from EDEN. I'm not really into the Foreign Language - English songs, but this works very well, especially because she ends the song with the classical foreign language. The seventh track is Brightman's rendition of Dvorak's "Song to the Moon", or "La Luna". The track is beautiful! The eighth track is Puccini's "Nessun Dorma", and Sarah masters this beautifully! There is no other soprano I know that can sing this piece one octave up and can hold the ending note for ever!!! Track 9 is "The War is Over", which is followed by "Free", both from HAREM. Track 11 is "A Whiter Shade of Pale", from LA LUNA. It's beautiful to listen to. Sarah's version is very gentle, but has a lot of energy in the chorus. The twelfth track on this album is "Twisted Every Way", followed by an instrumental version of "The Phantom of the Opera" Theme. The next track is "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again", which is extended at the end, in which you hear some men cry out "WE LOVE YOU SARAH!", and she responds cutely with an, "I love you, too." The audience laughs! Track 14 is "Time to Say Goodbye", the duet that made Andrea Bocelli famous, and skyrocketed as the number one single sold in German history! The last live track on the album is "A Question of Honour", from "Fly", which is awesome! The last track on the album is a bonus track, which I don't really prefer. However, the whole album is simply amazing. I much prefer Sarah when she is live. She has a more magical quality! If you love Sarah Brightman, then you will love this album.
ALSO RECOMMENDED : Since there is so much Sarah Brightman to choose from, I also recommend EDEN, TIME TO SAY GOODBYE, LA LUNA, CLASSICS, and DIVA.

Inspiring, Beautiful and The Sweetest Voice!.......2005-08-21
What an album, absolutly beautiful!
We, the fans of this great artist finelly have in our hands a live album, and it's amazing:
-The voice is totaly live, she sang about 24 complete songs in the show, but the album only contains 15.
-Snow In The Sahara is a lovely song.
If you have the chase of get this alubum, don't doubt and get it; It wond disapoint you!
astounding performance.......2005-06-07
an impeccable concert experience that successfully elevates the album to majestic heights. I had long been a fan of Dead Can Dance and the unparalleled work of Lisa Gerrard. When Sarah Brightman ventured into these Middle Eastern sounds on the Harem disc, I thought it was too derivative of the Dead Can Dance sounds (there is even a sample used on one of SB's songs that had previously been used within DCD).
However, experiencing this epic and intensely mystical concert compelled me to realize the individual and unique glory of Sarah Brightman. Also, this concert is so phenomenally entertaining at many levels that I couldn't help but fall absolutely in love with the special magic of Sarah Brightman. Obviously, the expansive Middle Eastern milieu can accommodate more than one angelic vocalist!
I now consider Lisa Gerrard and Sarah Brightman to be geniuses who both warrant goddess status in the pantheon of lyrical greats. To see either one of them perform live is surely one of the most powerful and memorable sensory experiences one could ever have!
Great, of course.......2005-03-18
Sarah's voice and style are terrific, as usual. However, I have to say that her version of Anggun's "Snow on the Sahara" is fairly bland, especially compared to the original Anggun version. Sarah has the chops but lacks soul on this great song. Everything els here is very nice.

great sountracks.......2007-07-05
elvis in the mid-sixties got a bad rap for supposedly putting out bad movies and bad songs. this is hardly the case though-with this soundtrack anyways. first we visit the harem holiday part of the soundtrack. this has some of the best songs ever this movie is set in iran back before the days of terrorism and stuff like that. this was a great tourist movie that showed the beauty of the country and the songs give the sound and style of there music. it was a real rocking set of songs. my favorites are the wisdom of the ages, shake that tamborine, hey little girl, and so close yet so far from paradaise. i give 2 thumbs up on the soundtrack and the movie it is family fun.
next is girl happy starring elvis presley and shelly frabres (from the tv show coach and the singer of johnny angel). this movie is great from start to finish and the songs are very good. puppet on a string, girl happy and wolf call are the highlights of this soundtrack and were international hits. i also give 2 thumbs up for the soundtrack and the movie. the movie is set up on spring break 1965 in florida it is a very funny film with lots of action and girls. as elvis sings in the title tune"every girl i see looks good to me , what a crazy odd way to be but i love a life with beautiful woman i'm girl happy" im saying buy the cd's and buy the movies. elvis is at his best in these movies and sountracks much better than viva las vegas where the songs werent that good and the plot stunk. people rave about that just because of ann -maragret which really aint fair. these movies are better and sound better and they are more fun for men and woman to watch.
Not his best work.......2007-03-23
This CD includes two of Elvis' movie soundtracks from 1965, Harum Scarum (aka Harem Holiday) and Girl Happy. While both soundtracks reached the top 10 on the US album charts and Girl Happy was certified GOLD, they are not particularly strong albums. This set is recommended only for avid Elvis fans.

BEST CD I OWN!.......2007-05-13
This is by far my favorite Sarah Brightman Cd. Although it is probably her most pop oriented cd, it totally rocks! Most of the songs have a Middle Eastern Edge to them and are awesome to blast in the car! Make sure to try to get the version with either the bonus Dvd or the french tracks!
FIVE STARS!
not the best.......2007-04-12
I agree with "music fan" about this CD. Eden is a good album, and she's a good artist. But either this album was poorly produced or something, because this does not show her best. I wouldn't classify this as world music at all, because the instruments aren't used and it's more classical pop; if that's a genre. It seemed rambly to me with many of the songs sounding similar and lacking originality. I love her, she's unique in her genre. But she really shines as a classicist, with Classics, her work by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who she married) and operatic albums. This is what she's best at, so her collaborations on Eden and La Luna, which are classical in nature but still allowed her to branch out musically, turned out good. I have a lot of her albums, but I wouldn't buy this one. It's more something to listen to once. A few of the songs are good, the album isn't terrible, but it's not very good.
Excellent CD/DVD set.......2007-03-31
This is a very good CD/DVD set, beautiful music and performance.I enjoyed it.
Magical Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-24
Sarah's voice soars! I love her voice and I'm a new fan. ^^ I've heard her name lots of times before from people I know and when I received some of her CDs and videos as early Christmas present, I was in awe! She definitely has the voice of an angel.
Welcome to the Forbidden.......2006-06-10
"Harem" is probably one of Sarah Brightman's most unique albums to date. Rarely an artist can captivate the sounds of the far east and be able to mix them in well with a western feel. west meets east if you will. Its nearly impossible to pick out one favorite out of the 14 tracks on the album. You can't choose "Harem" over "The War Is Over" or "Arabian Nights". All the songs on the album are the best and do the album justice and fit perfectly in their own way, as the theme is quite clear: Middle-Eastern music with a hint of pop and some club sounds. And while the album could have ended at "Until the End of Time" (yet another beautiful song on the album), Brightman ends the album with "You Take My Breath Away" (originally from her album Fly). Personally, this track should have been only present on "Harem" and not on the album "Fly". An excellent way nonetheless of ending the album.
The DVD shows the making of the album, and the video Harem is also on the DVD along with an alternate version to the video. Its the first time i've ever seen a video from Sarah Brightman and i must say, i'm not disappointed at all.
I'm anxiously awaiting a new album. I'm a new fan of Brightman's and i love what i'm hearing from this album. Highly recommended.

Simply amazing.......2007-07-03
I somehow had overlooked this band,as have most people in the states. But,after trading cd's with a friend from California,he turned me on to these guys as well as Gotthard. I have since tried to fill my library with anything from HS that I can find.I'm not going to give my opinion of every song, but if you want a top notch cd to play over and over, buy this one,as well as any of their other cd's,and enjoy some of the best music that you've never heard of!
WOW!!.......2007-05-24
Harem Scarem - WOW! What a great album. This is a superb collection of beautiful melodic rock songs. You have to listen to this music if you're at all interested in skillful yet catchy melodic rock in the vein of Giant, Extreme, Hardline etc. These guys can do no wrong! Great playing all round especially the awesome guitars. Killer vocal melodies and harmonies. Absolutely perfect production. All their albums are great so it is very hard to rank them but this one has a nice balance of rock and melody and songwriting and magic. This genre of music has been done alot but there are a few standout acts who really know what they're doing and Harem Scarem is one of them. Enjoy!
HOMERUN!!.......2006-01-10
i picked this up after reading reviews posted here. ya know, it's really hard in the good ole usa to get exposed to music that has what i need to get off. that being:1.really good lead and back-up vocals 2.great musicianship 3.well written songs. this one has all of the above. the guitar work is brutal, harmony vocals as good as you've ever heard, and the production is grade A. i'll never understand why a band of this caliber doesn't get promotion and airplay in the states. you really need this one.
One of the finest AOR/hard rock albums ever.......2005-08-09
Simply put, Harem Scarem is a phenomenal band who can do no wrong when it comes to creating hard-rocking, catchy, stylistically diverse rock music. This is melodic rock refined by some of the greatest songwriters in ANY genre, and to top it off, the band is absolutely on fire. Listen to Harry Hess' amazing vocals on "If There Was A Time" - and he says he was singing with a cold that day! Or Pete Lesperance's smoldering guitar work on closing track "Had Enough" - brilliant. From start to finish, this is an unapologetic rocker through and through, but is so melodic and jam-packed with great choruses and guitar riffs you won't be able to get it out of your head for months. I just discovered this a few years ago, and boy am I glad I did. Fans of Def Leppard, Extreme, Whitesnake, Hardline, Journey, Van Halen, Queen, and pretty much ANY melodic hard rock will find a lot to enjoy here. Tracks range from Leppard-style arena anthems like "Stranger Than Love" to bluesy rips like "Jealousy", all the way to the acapella "Just Like I Planned" (my least favorite track, but still really good) and the slamming "Saviors Never Cry". It's all over the map but still retains that melodic core. Two thumbs wayyy up for this classic record.
Best Tracks:
"Stranger Than Love" - One of the best choruses I've ever heard in my life. Nothing too intricate, just a great slab of melodic songwriting and the obligatory awesome solo.
"Change Comes Around" - Probably the heaviest track here, this one could go toe-to-toe with the Crue or Scorpions or any of the other "heavy" melodic rock bands. Great anthemic outro too.
"Jealousy" - Bluesy, great vocals by Harry Hess. This track smokes from start to finish but still has that hit-potential.
"Sentimental Boulevard" - Should have been a #1 smash! Check out that great chorus, and again great guitar work. Sung by drummer Darren Smith.
"Mandy" - Soothing, note perfect guitar instrumental that keeps the album flowing seamlessly.
"If There Was A Time" - Incredible vocals, amazing guitar solo, and a chorus to die for. Spiritual, hooky, original - there's so much to say about this awesome tune. One of my all-time favorite Harem Scarem tracks.
very good.......2005-02-05
I'm not as fanatical about this album as most Harem Scarem fans. I like it, but I don't think it's their #1 album. "No Justice" and "Saviours Never Cry" are excellent bonecrushing rockers and alone are worth buying this CD.

Customer Reviews:
Great songs.......2005-09-29
Harem Holiday songs withstand time and are beutiful. They fit so many moods, travel, love, wondering why. Girl Happy also has upbeat songs and again the love songs keep you hoping for the love of your life.
When a man feels thirst, he takes a drink!.......2005-08-04
What you have here are two lousy Elvis soundtracks from 1965 on one CD.
Harum Scarum is a very bad soundtrack. None of the song were considered good enough to be released as singles. The one fairly good song is "So Close, Yet So Far (From Paradise)". The only other songs that are somewhat interesting are "Shake That Tambourine" and "Hey Little Girl", which aren't good songs, but at least they have some energy to them.
Girl Happy is another bad soundtrack. "Do the Clam" was released as a single from this album, and was one of the worst songs ever released as an Elvis single. The only good song on the album is "Puppet on a String", which was later released as a single when it started to get radio airplay. A few other songs have a certain goofy charm, such as "Cross My Heart and Hope to Die" and "The Meanest Girl in Town", but they are by no means good songs.
This CD will be of interest only to Elvis fans who have to have everything that the King ever recorded.
who needs the sun sessions?.......2004-01-20
as this is a two part cd, so shall this review be. are you ready, kiddies? now it begins!!!
harem scarem is not a good movie. nor is it a good soundtrack. it falls in the category of forgotten elvis, simply because it is neither king-of-rock-&-roll good, nor is it fat-man-on-the-toilet bad, it simply lies there, like a forgotten tuna fish sandwich at the carnival. only three tunes stand out: shake that tambourine is most definitely FMOTT bad; generic rock backing with a cringe worthy lyric. one can almost hear elvis weeping into his hands after recording this. hey little girl would be just another blatant come on from the king to one of his unworthy minions, except for the fact that, in the film, he's actually singing this entendre laden swill TO A LITTLE GIRL, making it rather uncomfortable to listen to (you want easy listening? pat boone is waiting!). & so close yet so far is (no foolin) a great great ballad. one can almost see elvis sigh with relief after getting a decent tune to sing, then pound his fist in exasperation after getting the lead sheet to "go east young man".
girl happy. girl happy is the finest elvis soundtrack ever. girl happy is the finest elvis movie ever. girl happy is the greatest elvis ever. sure, okay, you might dismiss the whole thing as mindless escapism & heresy to compare this slight 20+ minutes of material to the finest the king had to offer, but allow me to rebut with this: you are wrong. nothing touches this. you want great rock & roll with minimal investment in time? meanest girl in town, got to find my baby, & startin tonight all fit your bill-not a one over two minutes & action packed HEAR ME action packed! you need stooopid, head scratchworthy babble? why not try ft lauderdale chamber of commerce & spring fever? you dig elvis da stud? cross my heart & do not disturb should be ringin your bells! i know you wanna dance dance dance, so get animal & listen to wolf call & do the clam! in fact the lamest song on here is the most conventional, puppet on a string, but it is but a small price to pay for otherwise perfection. forget heartbreak hotel & hound dog, in the ghetto & kentucky rain, hurt & patch it up. THIS is elvis' peak.
Elvis reaches the height of his creativity.......2003-11-11
I know of not one song on the album Harum Scarum that was released as an single. The Music is outstanding on Harum Scarum and the psychedelic era would soon follow. In my opinion the best song on Harum Scarum is "Wisdom of the Ages", and the song "Golden Coins", is almost as creative as was "Wisdom of the Ages". The Beatles song "Norwegian Wood" is much similar to "Wisdom of the Ages", especially the Guitar work. The other songs are also very creative especially "So Close Yet So Far From Paradise", and "Animal Instinct", and "Harum Holiday", both of those songs you will notice Beatle influence. The other songs are also very good songs but not the type of songs that would make it to the top ten. This Elvis album in my opinion is one of the greatest albums ever recorded because it had an impact obviously, and Middle Eastern music afterwards would become a part of rock music. The album "Girl Happy" is another good Elvis album for the most part and is worth buying.
Harum Scarum.......2002-09-25
I give it five stars simply on the material provided for the Harem Scarem part of the cd. Most of the songs on the Girl Happy section do not interest me in the least. There are some beautiful and haunting songs in the Harum soundtrack, especially "Wisdom Of The Ages" and "So Close Yet So Far" with that far off mystical sound that I wish Elvis would have used more later in his career. Elvis' voice is absolutely supurb, showing his versatility as he always does. I highly suggest this just based on the strength of the Harum Scarum tracks. You just might learn something.

Album Description
Although it took over three and a half decades to be released in North America, the "lost" Procol Harum 1969 Abbey Road sessions "Licorice John Death " are now rock music reality. Discovered a few years ago, in a mislabeled tape box at this legendary St. John Wood studio, the Licorice John Death recordings were briefly released as a very limited fan club release for Gazza Records. For this newly remastered edition, Gary Brooker has unearthed these thirteen lost tracks recorded with the classic mid-period Procol Harum line-up of himself, Robin Trower, Chris Copping and the late B.J. Wilson. Along with the careful restoration that you have come to expect from Friday Music, Ain't Nothin' To Get Excited About is a rare chapter in the long history of the beloved Procol Harum.
These sessions originated around the time between their much applauded Home and Broken Barricades releases. Chris Thomas, who had gone on to produce some of their most successful recordings, manned the controls for this all-night recording session. With a back-to-the-roots approach, this unique quartet played a hard rocking, non-stop set of early R & B, a new original and several 50's rockers which culminated into a rare glimpse to their past, and as a tribute to their devoted friend and fan from their Paramounts era, the late Dave Mundy. The choice of material is vintage 50's rockers and pounding R & B classics from the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis , Fats Domino and Little Richard. Even an early Sun Records reading of Charlie Rich's "Every Thing I Do Is Wrong" gets an incredible work-out that has to be heard to be believed.
The real thing here is the band's performance. Gary Brooker sings and plays like never before. He is screaming, shouting, banging the keys and having quite the party with these recordings. Robin Trower takes these classics and turns them into bluesy renditions that pre-echoed his solo work on albums like Bridge of Sighs. Check out his masterful work on "Kansas City" and "Matchbox." Chris Copping plays a powerful bass to B.J. Wilson's soaring drum beat throughout the entire album. Track after glorious track, these four gents from London truly delivered one of the more rocking performances of their day, and it lives on today thanks to some unexpected housecleaning at the famed Abbey Road studios.
