A serial collaborator, Everything & Nothing draws material from the range of David Sylvian recordings, from 1991's Rain Tree Crow (with Japan members Richard Barbieri and Steve Jansen) to Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1986 album, Heartbeat, to his own '87 touchstone, Secrets of the Beehive. In a wonderful coup for devotees, this collection of singles, live recordings, and oddities also features the complete version of the lost Japan tune "Some Kind of Fool," intended for Gentlemen Take Poloraids. However, as so much of what Sylvian achieved with Japan was built on artifice, it's refreshing to hear him in a stripped-down setting. The opening "The Scent of Magnolia"--part electronica, part rock--glides with a subtlety that puts many practitioners in both fields to shame, while "Albuquerque" sustains a gorgeous balance between conceptual boldness and engaging melodiousness. Everything & Nothing is a good way to sample and celebrate a shape-shifter such as Sylvian as he ducks in and out of focus, between rugged ballads (the infamous "Ghosts"), avant-garde jazz ("God's Monkey"), and glossy pop. --Maxine Kabuubi

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Very Good Sound, Very Good Track Selections, Very David Sylvian!.......2005-09-04

You either love or hate DS's music; you either get it or you don't. For those of you that do get it, this is a very good compilation that is very representative of his life's work to date and includes his time at Japan e.g. "Ghosts" as well as his collaborative work with e.g. Ruichi Sakamoto "Bamboo Houses".

These two tracks also happen to be my favourites but the other tracks are also very good and the track order makes for very smooth listening, so much so that for a newcomer, the album sounds very cohesive and is a good listen. DS has a very unique style and this is a very good album to get to get to know the man and his music. Recommended.

If you don't like the artist for whatever reason don't bother
with a review. David Sylvian is one of the most unique artists past or present. I love his work and really respect him as a musician and person for that matter. This compilation will not please everyone and is intended for "new" listeners as an introduction to David's talent, after all a true fan will already have these tracks found on his various cd's and other recordings.

A worthy buy, or is it?.......2004-03-03

I had a couple David Sylvian tracks here and there and I liked them very much so I figured this CD was a good place to start investigationg David's music. It's a double edge sword that this album feels like a consisant 2 cd release instead of a collection of 15yrs of musical releases. It's good in the fact that the styles of the songs don't feel disjointed or make radical changes. Overall the cds are calmy, mellow and sometimes very good. But the bad side to this is that I can't believe that a musical artist can't innovate their style over 15yrs of music.

Some of the best tracks on this collection are rare pieces that appear on compilation cds or released on somebody else's CD.

Overall this is a worthy buy as I really like David's baritone voice which reminds me very much of the Aluminum Group's vocals but with better guitar work and very nice strings and/or horns worked into the music.

powerful vision.......2003-09-19

a magnificent collection of golden songs from some other universe - where art takes precedence over commerce and true vision rules.

I have a slight problem with the packaging of this work. Everytime I open it the flimsy plastic center pieces designed to keep each cd in place, which broke apart, cause the cds to fumble around and possibly get scratched. The manufacturers should have the same standards that the music executives building homes in Malibu do! Provide us something that helps us better store our music.

Sylvian is an incredible musician/artist who should not be faulted. His catalogue is highly impressive and thoroughly satisfying.

Enjoy, but make sure you quickly preserve the songs before the packaging destroys them!

A collection.......2003-04-30

This is not a best of, this is a collection. There are some great collectable songs, some re-recordings and some classics.

New songs such as the infamously lost "Ride" make this CD worth buying for any Sylvian fan. True such classics such as Nostalgia and Red Guitar are missing, but the sublme beauty of the music is hard to ignore.

If you are a new inititiate into the world of David Sylvian, I would still recommend "Secrets of the Beehive". But as a fan, E&N is a CD I would not be without.

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

Don't I know anything?.......2006-12-18

Last night we went to go see Jimmie Dale Gilmore at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Someone named Amy Allison was opening.
Well..... Amy Allison just blew me away. How come I've never heard of her before? I loved every song she sang. No wonder Elvis Costello likes her! VERY clever songwriting, a beautiful and interesting voice, and great style. I'm sorry that I only picked up this CD on the way out. I now wish I had gotten all four. This is a fabulous record. Even though last night was Robbie Folks' 'Secret Country' this is really a finely crafted pop record. I was playing it while we were making dinner and my wife said 'Wow, this is really good.'
Amy is my new favorite singer!

more gems from a gem.......2006-07-21

There is a wonderous and deceptive ease that informs Amy Allison's very accomplished songcraft. Her rendering of heartache has wit and pathos, vulnerability, tenderness as well as bite. She has a great knack for coining or manipulating cliche without falling prey to banality. This disc's great title track is a good case in point. While this entire effort doesn't pack the same punch for me as either No Frill's Friend or the Maudlin Years there is plenty of effective melodies, unexpected turns of phrase and emotionally honest moments to make it clear she is one of her generations best songwriters. Speaking of great songwriters--her reading of her father's tune "Was" here is really lovely. Finally, the obligatory acknowledgement of the nasality in her voice and warning to those who can't hear the beauty in it: it's here, get real, get over it.

best cd ever.......2007-04-28

okay, i only named it that because of the few who rated it 1 star and... the one who rated it 3. it really is one of my favorite cd's though. it is an aquired taste and a love it or hate it cd. if you rate this a 3, i really don't understand you. i have fallen asleep to this cd blasting in my headphones once, and that is truly terrible. because this is probably THE heaviest cd i own, and although the members have changed (besides scogin) the chariot continue to rule with UNSUNG and the fiancee. they never cease to amaze me, but this album will take time to grow on you. once you do, you WILL NOT put it down for a LONG time.

The Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch Chariot!!!!.......2006-04-21

Well, obviously if you are looking at the reviews for this CD you may be seeing that people either LOVE this CD or HATE this CD. I am one of those that LOVE it. The Chariot is mainly a thrash band without the 30 second songs. They have all the brutality of The Locust, Et Tu Brute? and bands in that genre without having 1.) The blood lusty, depressing lyrics, and 2.) The half minute songs that all sound the same after an hour of listening.

The Chariot is fronted by Josh Scogin of Norma Jean (Who, by the way, does a LOT better than the new vocalist they have). He has a huge range with his vocals and brings over his trademark long song titles for this CD. (Check out the title for track #2) But the lyrics he writes are poetic and uplifting, not dark and disturbing like others in the genre. And if you pick up "Everything Is Alive..." check out their "Unsung EP" with some new music and a concert video that is wicked. Bottom line is, though, you are going to like it or hate it. So maybe borrow it before you buy it to check it out. But if you are a fan of Norma Jean or even As I Lay Dying, you should give it a once over.

Chaotic Metal: Definitely An Acquired Taste.......2006-04-06

I got a good laugh out of the sticker on the corner of "Everything Is Alive..." that read something like "For Fans of Opeth, Unearth, and ASHLEE SIMPSON". A band on Solid State Records that sounds like a mediocre pop "star"? Yeah right; this band definitely has sense of humor.

When I first played the CD, I listened to the first track all the way through. I absolutely hated it. I then skipped through all the other tracks and listened to about 30 seconds of each. More of the same. I couldn't believe that I had wasted my money on this pile of slow-paced loud noisy garbage. The guitar feedback grated on my eardrums, and I ended up with a massive headache. Needless to say, I took a break from The Chariot for a while.

A few weeks later, however, the song "Die Interviwer" popped up on my mp3 player's random shuffle, so I listened to the whole song. I could actually tolerate it. Soon, I started listening to more and more songs from the album, and I was amazed by the realness of the sound, and the incredible brutality of it all: the ripping guitars, the pounding drums, and the lead singer, who roars like a man possessed. I listened to the album all the way through, and I was hooked.

The Chariot is a truly incredible band, and is nothing like I've ever heard before. They draw a listener in more than Norma Jean ever will. They are just as amazingly brutal in concert, also. However, a word of warning: You cannot just start listening to this band. A love of metal is required, and you have to be open to new styles. I would recommend listening to bands such as Becoming the Archetype before picking this album up. But it is well worth it; listening to The Chariot is a breathtaking experience.

DO NOT!.......2006-02-20

This is one of the worst metal releases of all and I mean
ALL time. Lots of long song titles that make no sense and
are stupid. Short songs. Sloppy metal. Horrible screaming.
Crap. Get zao instead.

Feedbackfest 04! Starring The Chariot.......2006-02-08

Well.......what to say about this album other than.....it has mroe feedback than a Who concert (even at 13 decibels haha!) This one is decent at best....I'm glad a friend of mine burned it for me instead of me going out and actually paying full price because it's not that great. I was expecting so much from Scogin but ya know what......if you really want to hear what this band can really do, check out The Unsung EP. Now I can understand how most people really love the rawness, I am one of them believe me, but ya know what....there is only so much feedback that one person can take without wanting to throw the CD out the window. The one blessing that this album gives you is that it's only 29 minutes long. My favorite song on the CD by far is track 5 And Then, Came Then. I love the intro with the classical music, then Josh's bone rattling roar blasts from the speakers. If you're looking for Norma Jean 2....don't listen to this CD. The only thing NJ about this CD is Scogin. But if you're interested in The Chariot, listen to The Unsung EP...the songs have more of a polish but it still showcases the talent wonderfully.

Kurt Vonnegut?.......2006-04-22

Kurt Vonnegut references in the album title, which is a line from his book "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater", and the first track title is a mix of his books "Welcome to the Monkey House" and "Slaughterhouse-Five", all good reads.

Locked inside your cage where all your world's a stage.......2006-03-25

Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt was far from an instant hit with me. In fact, I was close to not even liking it. My problem was that I heard Better Left Unsaid before actually buying this so I halfway expected each song to be like that or in that same vein of it. Each song is significantly different from the next however, breaking up any sort of monotony that might begin to form.

Lily Holbrook is one of those artists that makes music that either clicks with you or it doesn't. At times this CD is positively mainstream yet at others it's no wonder why she hasn't made it big. When In Rome is probably one of Lily's more mainstream-ready songs, it just so happens that it's her worst effort on this CD though (it's not bad, it just doesn't 'fit' with the rest of the album). Make Them Wonder is one of those songs that is no doubt catchy, but just wouldn't fit with your other well-known musicians. The distorted vocals are used perfectly though.

For me, this is just good, solid, easy listening music. This is one of those CDs where when your life is at its most hectic, you can play this and you'll be at peace. Lily's voice plays a huge part in that effect. While some may say it's not very inventive, I say that her voice, plain and simple, is gorgeous. As for the music, it's not your average acoustic guitar and drums. With this CD it feels like they took their time creating a certain melody to go with a certain lyric. Let's put it this way, there's not a boring part in this CD.

It was a very ballsy move of Lily to put a cover of a classic Ozzy song on here. For my money, Lily does the song even better than Ozzy did, incorporating a sort of female touch to it.

My favorite songs are Welcome To The Slaughterhouse, Better Left Unsaid, Bleed, Mermaid, and Mama, I'm Coming Home. By no means is this a CD anyone could put on and love, I believe that only certain people will like this CD. Don't let my saying that scare you off though, this CD was well worth every penny and I adore all ten songs included. It is a must to go in with an open mind though, if you don't and you end up not liking it, well, that's nothing but a shame.

Lily Holbrook is truly Amazing.......2006-02-24

Lily has a amazingly beautiful voice . All the tracks on Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt have thoughtful lyrics and haunting melodies. My favorite is the spunky "When in Rome". I recommend that you Run, do not walk, to your nearest store and get this alblum. It will brighten up your day, lighten your heart, and mezmerize your soul. Its just brilliant.

finally something unique.......2006-02-06

I initially checked out Lily Holbrook because of comparisons to Tori Amos. And while I can definately see that Lily has been influenced by Tori(not a bad thing in my book!) I still think she has her own unique style. Its refreshing to hear someone who writes songs that have real meaning. Songs about ex-boyfriends and love gone wrong are a dime a dozen. This album covers everything from war to plastic surgery to fairies and mermaids. It also has a really cool cover of Ozzy's "Mama I'm Coming Home". All in all, a very worthy purchase!

When I heard her Welcome to Slaughterhouse, I fell so completely in love with it I just had to get the whole album. But when I got it, I found I pretty much only love that song, the other ones just didn't capture me as much.

I've got NO problem whatsoever with her voice, truthfully I love unique voices instead of those copying after one another pop artists voices. But alot of her songs just aren't deep enough, didn't have enough dynamic to make me love her. This is honest, and believe me I've given her a fair chance. At times I just couldn't listening on to some of her songs, they just repeates too much without really making the lines truly shine.

I think if Lily work on it, she can produce great things; if she can write songs like Welcome to Slaughterhouse, I have confident that she can make it really big.

I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30

Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10

Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.

* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.

* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.

Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.

"Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.

A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21

This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

Quite possibly Howard Shore's best work yet..........2006-08-24

I've always enjoyed Howard Shore's work, even way before he became a household name with the mammoth scores for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I personally feel that he is at his best when doing the scores for Cronenberg's works.

With Naked Lunch, I think Shore managed to create a perfect soundscape to go along with director David Cronenberg's crazed adaptation of William Burrough's cult novel. Shore, along with famed saxophonist Ornette Coleman, join together to create a strange hybrid of mood music and frenetic jazz that fits the film perfectly. This isn't typical jazz and is very free form but still, it's definitely one of the best film scores I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's not for everyone but if you appreciate a good, moody movie score, look no further for this is one of the absolute best.

Lastly, it reminds me a bit of the score that he did for "The Cell", due to the Middle East sounding bits laced throughout the album and out of all of his scores, I'd say it resembles that one the most. The lonely saxophone also reminds me of the score for "Angel Heart", the sax in which was played by Courtney Pine.

In a career that's veered from '70s pop chanteuse to Broadway star and neo-operatic diva, Sarah Brightman has brought a critics-be-damned sense of dramatic scale to nearly every project she's tackled. This two-CD package of 31 hits brings together selections from Brightman's original Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, including many definitive versions of Lloyd Webber classics. Also included are songs from her album Encore, which itself was largely culled from her Songs That Got Away and Surrender song anthologies, although they do include four previously unreleased outtakes from those collections.

Her 1998 recording of the title song from ex-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind succeeds by emphasizing its melodic grace with a deft, airy touch, while the remainder rescue worthy songs from obscure or failed musicals. From Lerner and Lane's 1959 Carmelina comes the lovely "One More Walk Around the Garden." Stephen Sondheim's youthful 1954 debut, Saturday Night, yields a sprightly take on "What More Do I Need," and an operatic reading of "In the Mandarin's Orchid Garden," from the Gershwins' unproduced 1929 East Is West, is also included. If the selection leans a little too heavily on the Lloyd Webber connection elsewhere (including Italian versions of "Guardami (With One Look)" from Sunset Boulevard and "Piano (Memory)" from Cats, delivered in her patently restraint-free soprano), they're only reminders that shrewdness has hardly been the least of Brightman's talents. --Jerry McCulley

Both of these discs afford great pleasure. The Lloyd Webber compilation presents many of his biggest hits in fine performances by his ex-wife. The Encore disc gives fascinating glimpses of worthy but little known pieces from musicals. Arrangements are wonderful, and Sarah Brightman is in excellent voice throughout. At times she has a tendency to wax a bit operatic, but she certainly does have the chops to bring it off successfully, so I'm not complaining. Obviously, Ms. Brightman was trained in the classical tradition, and she knows how to use her voice to best advantage in service to the material. In short, she has musical integrity.

Before she was a sparkling pop/classical diva, Sarah Brightman was a Broadway star and the onetime wife of the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber. This two-disc set that includes her "Encore," a collection of songs from mostly-obscure musicals, and "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection," several of Webber's songs (mostly picked from "Songs That Got Away" and "Surrender").

"Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection" starts off with the gothic "Phantom of the Opera," but quickly moves on to lighter fare in the airy "Unexpected Song," a soaring duet with Cliff Richards in "All I Ask Of You," the sparkling "Love Changes Everything," and some tepid forays into the shrill "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and "Memory."

"Encore" is far more ethereal and steady. The piano-led "Whistle Down The Wind" starts it off on a strong note, before the aching "Away From You," operatic "Think of Me," affectionate "If I Ever Fall in Love Again," and the symphonic "Nothing Like You've Ever Known." A particular highlight is the sparkling "What More Do I Need," a little tune that celebrates how love brightens up even the most dingy little apartment, in the most miserable weather. "With your love/what more do I need?"

Sarah Brightman was obviously on solid footing with these two CDs. It might leave a bad taste in some fans' mouths that "Collection" is mostly compiled from a pair of other Brightman albums, but if listeners don't have "Surrender" and "Songs That Got Away," this two-disc set would be an excellent way to acquaint themselves with it.

"Encore" is steady and well-suited for Brightman's voice, as well as having a sort of Victorian-garden air. "Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection" has the most flaws of the two -- some of the songs like "Memory" aren't suited to Brightman's voice, and she comes across as shrill and uneasy. But in songs written for her talents and "Encore," her voice alternately soars and murmurs in an airy soprano.

Sarah Brightman reached her artistic pinnacle so far in the velvety "Eden," but her stuff here is still quite beautiful. "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection/Encore" two-pack is a satisfying look at some of Brightman's Broadway-based songs.

Yes, it's true. Sarah has nothing to do with these cds, but her voice. It's another record that Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really "not that" Useful Group release to make money. Those two cds are very good though. If you have one of them, i suggest to get the other separatly.
