About the Artist
Alan Roubik was a child protégé, having played his organ keyboard by ear at the age of 3. By 9 years of age, Alan performed his own compositions as well as classical and ragtime music in numerous talent shows, competitions and fundraising events. At the age of 16, Alan sustained severe damage to the Ulnar nerve in his right arm, making it nearly impossible to move his fingers. Not only immobility, but tremendous pain prevented Alan from competing. He could no longer hold a fork or spoon in his right hand. Doctors suggested surgery, but Alan refused. He was determined to continue playing the piano, and he began to focus on creating compositions that suited his limited hand movements. Unbeknownst to Alan, he had been utilizing one form of music therapy that would eventually strengthen his hand and allow him full mobility to perform again. Ironically, Alan would later become most well known for his music therapy recordings. Over a period of nearly ten years! since his accident, Alan had developed enough strength in his right hand to compose and perform more complex music. In fact, by 1992, Alan had plenty of original songs and the courage and confidence to produce his own record, entitled "Promises". The popularity of this recording lead to the production of the music video "Promises", which was an instant hit on such programs as MTV, Star TV Asia and MOR Music. Today, Alan has produced a dozen CD recordings, three music videos, a film score and commercials. He is also recognized worldwide as a "healing music" artist and producer. His first music therapy recording released in Japan in 1996 fetched an unprecedented retail price of $100 per CD. Scientifically tested and endorsed by an independent research laboratory in Tokyo, Alan's music is said to have the most healing properties of any modern music. He is the only non-Japanese recording artist to be inducted in the National Archives of Japan for his healing music. Today, Alan's music is used and recommended by doctors, professional athletes and trainers, health and fitness instructors, celebrities, and even royalty.

This new version of the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack coincides with the movie's 30th anniversary (which is also celebrated by a special edition DVD). The CD is notable for several instrumental tracks by John Williams, as well as for "Any Day Now," a previously unreleased song performed by Perchik/Paul Michael Glaser (better known for his starring role in TV's Starsky and Hutch). The soundtrack is often compared unfavorably with the original 1964 cast album, in which Zero Mostel played the part of Tevye (here performed by Topol, who had been in the 1967 London production). But this CD has a lot going for it, including glossy remastering and, of course, Isaac Stern as the fiddler. In the end, whatever version you decide to pick up, Fiddler remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have other versions of CDs of "The Fiddler of the Roof" but Topol is the best and this is one of the best CDs with Topol. As far as "The Fiddler On the Roof" goes, that is a thumbs up 5 star anytime story and songs.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-16

I had looked everywhere for this CD. I am so happy to have found the "real" Fiddler on the Roof!

5 out of 5 stars CP as Grandmother Tzeitel.......2007-03-30

At first, I thought this musical was weird but then I grew to like it. It has a sad ending but the thems in the movie are really interesting. Life really is like being a fiddler on the roof. In a musical coming up at my school, I am playign the part of Grandmother Tzeitel in Tevye's dream. I am excited to play the part and I think our musical will go very well!

5 out of 5 stars Never Ending Joy!.......2006-11-22

The music from Fiddler on the Roof is exciting, fun, interesting and funny! This CD is mixed with humor, music from different cultures and a wide mix of different songs. Each song is so different that I can listen to it for hours. I was surprised how enjoyable and pleasent it really is. Although...it is easy to get this music stuck in your head!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

5 out of 5 stars "Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30

This review is by Crosley.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

5 out of 5 stars A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-07-13

I loved the music more than the movie. This is truly an add for any collection of Movie Soundtracks or the like. Excellent blend of two cultures in a musical spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning... a disc that will get repeated plays.......2007-01-19

I don't usually listen to soundtracks as they are usually just a grab bag of unrelated songs that don't work so well together as a CD and therefore don't sustain my attention for very long. Some of the exceptions would be Samsara, Himalaya (a stunning CD), Baraka, 1 Giant Leap... and now Nowhere in Africa. There's beautiful symphonies, chanting, drumming, occasional bird sounds, native Africans and other effects that evoke whole range of moods and emotions over this powerful, inspiring and uplifting one hour journey. This academy award winning film really touched my heart and I think a good part of it was the beautiful score that accompanied it.

This is first class music that you will play again and again. If you enjoyed the film, be sure to pick up the soundtrack to Nowhere in Africa. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars JohnnyReviews [Starred-Review].......2003-07-06

>Nowhere In Africa was a breath-taking movie with music that can take you away. This is definately a must-see film. UNBELIVABLE! Now let's get down to the music here, since the product is the soundtack that is being sold here. They have this one voice that sings a song that they play multiple times during the movie. It is made to sound like a child. It goes...

Eee-OOO Ah.
Eee-OOO Ah.
Eee-OOO Aaaaahhhhh.

The sound is just so beautiful. This is the kind of music that is so soothing it could put you right to sleep. But the music is strong and has a message hear of what this family had to go through to survive and what they had lost when their families died when they refused to leave their Nazi Death Chamber. Sad but a must see (and listen)!

5 out of 5 stars "Magnificent score reflects the country ~ Niki Reiser".......2003-05-07

Best Foreign Language Film winner of 2002 from the Academy Award people and nominated by the Golden Globe is "Nowhere in Africa", from director Caroline Link ~ is captivating to say the least. From Nazi Germany one family escapes in 1938 to a new beginning in Kenya ~ from the autobiographical book by Stefanie Zweig is truly an amazing story ~ but wait it only gets better with an award winning score by Niki Reiser, the Swiss Composer who leads the Baset Symphony Orchestra inclusive of sweeping strings and native chants. Very short (less than a minute) tracks of a child singing with harp accompaniment is haunting.

Highlights ~ "NOWHERE IN AFRICA", rhythmic percussion interwoven with the string section, wind instruments join the pulse sating journey ~ "LOVE SCENE", piano solo as strings close in with solace and meditation ~ "JOURNEY THROUGH KENYA", opening sounds of a hoe-down and chants blend within each passage and counter drum beats within the percussion section.

Hats off to Higher Octave Music for sharing this wonderful soundtrack with all the "film-score-buffs" who look forward to unique and global world scores ~ this album will sit on my top shelf for continual enjoyment in the next days and weeks forthcoming.

5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

5 out of 5 stars A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

5 out of 5 stars A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

5 out of 5 stars Great music - fun to singalong.......2007-03-10

We have the Christmas Revels CD and loved that, but I can't stand Christmas music in February, so I bought this CD. My family adores it -- my kids, 4 and 6, love to sing along to it. There are a few drinking songs that praise alcoholic beverages (Good Ale, Jone's Ale), but I'm not sure my kids get the gist and it doesn't bother me.

I felt this was well worth the cost -- there are a lot of songs on here. I love that we can sing along to music that isn't sacchrine, dumb-downed, kids music and I like the historical nature of the tunes (the liner notes are great -- they give background on the May festival and each song has a few sentences of background, as well as providing the lyrics. There are a few songs that are instrumental, but most have singing).

Another album my family is enjoying is Dean Shostack Davy Crockett's Fiddle - they are instrumental early American fiddle tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Very fresh and fun........2001-09-06

I defy you to not sing along with this album. The songs are catcy without being tiring, folksy without being simple, nostalgic without being sentimental. The Revel Singers make you feel like you're in the midst of a big party full of boisterous people having a great time. I was introduced to this album via my local eclectic radio station that played "Jones's Ale" one morning and I was hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Change from Tired Carols.......1999-12-29

Probably taken from one of the delightful annual Revels Christmas/holiday musicals, the sound is Christmas-y without being cloying. It's joyful, fresh and charming.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING!!!.......2006-03-09

I would recommend this recording to any lover of the Cello.
It was magnificent.

4 out of 5 stars Correction!!!.......2006-03-01

According to Naxos.com, track 10 on this CD is the (extremely short) second movement of Brandenburg's 3rd Concerto, which does in fact only last 11 seconds. Therefore nothing is missing on this CD. I was one of the twenty cellos on it, so I should know!! I give it four stars because I am not a huge fan of the Brubeck pieces, but I think the cello playing is great of course!

1 out of 5 stars the 2nd movement should be 4-5 minutes long.......2006-02-12

Most of this CD is satisfactory; however the 2nd movement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto has an error. Only 11 seconds are recorded on this album; it really is supposed to be several minutes long (if you want to check for yourself you can hear samples of it, on other recordings available here on Amazon, or you can find the score online). Naxos has made an error here, and hopefully they'll fix it and re-release this.

But you're almost certainly not shopping for Bach's 6th Brandenburg Concerto, which is available in many different recordings. There's no problem with the Brubeck. I've listened to it several times with satisfaction.

    5 out of 5 stars A WORTHY TRIBUTE TO A GREAT ARTIST.......2007-05-07

ISAAC STERN WILL ALWAYS BE UNIQUE AS HE HAD A TONE AND TECHNIQUE WITH THE VIOLIN THAT DEFIES DESCRIPTION. ON THIS RECORDING LISTEN TO THE RONDO FROM BEETHOVEN'S VIOLIN CONCERTO OP 61 - IT IS SIMPLY SPINE TINGLING. ANOTHER EXAMPLE WOULD BE FRITZ KREISLER'S LIEBESLEID HOWEVER TO MY ESTIMATION THE FIRST CD RELEASE OF BEETHOVEN'S VIOLIN SONATA OP 30 NO 2 - 'ALLEGRO CON BRIO' HAS TO BE HEARD BY ANY LOVER OF THE VIOLIN AND IS IN MY OPINION ONE OF THIS GREAT ARTIST'S FINEST RECORDING - BUY THE CD JUST FOR THIS ALONE. EVERYTHING ELSE IS SUPERB SO DON'T HESITATE TO ADD THIS CD IN YOUR COLLECTION.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2003-03-01

I am a newbie to classical music. I love this CD. I realize that it doesn't do justice to many works due to the fact that only one track is played from each work, but to people like me, this is a good starting point. From here, I now know of areas of Isaac Stern's body of work that I want to delve into. I also have a better idea of which composers I want to take a closer look at. In my opinion, for a person just starting out in classical music, this is a good "sampler" of classical violin music. It's probably not something for a serious collector due to the fact that it is a collection of previously released works. I would consider it in league with a "greatest hits" album from a rock band. It's not for serious listeners, but it's a good starting point for beginners. This is a good starting point.

4 out of 5 stars A tribute to the artist.......1999-10-20

Of course the playing is magnificent, absolute magic. But does this CD serve any purpose? Very few serious collections are without some Stern offerings in which he plays the COMPLETE WORK. I emphasize those words to get to a complaint I always have with programs that consist of parts of longer works that make little musical sense detached from the context for which they were intended.

The Dvorak "Humoresque," for example, stands up very nicely as a single work; while the first movement of the Beethoven Piano Trio Op. 70 makes you anticipate the wonderful second movement which never comes. And so on and so on. So one will not purchase this for the music but for the artist.

No, I do not know how to fit on one CD a truly fitting tribute to a master musician, except by including only independent short pieces. Unhappily most artists are at their best in longer ones...and there we are again. Yes, all Stern lovers should have this as a momento; others not familiar with his artistry will find this CD a good introduction. The rest of us can seek out the complete recordings.

Jules Verne's sturdy tale of Victorian globe trotter Phileas Fogg has seen screen incarnations as diverse as cameo-dotted Mike Todd 1950s widescreen epic, bawdy Aussie romp and Michael Palin travelogue. Here it's reinvented as antic vehicle for the Keaton-esque charms of martial arts legend Jackie Chan, whose comic centerpiece character effectively demotes Steve Coogan's Fogg to straight man. Given that frame, Trevor Jones' energetic orchestral score spends half its time bolstering the comic stunt work with blaring, McAction film boilerplate and the rest either parodying the former, or dishing up more inviting, cartoon-y pastiches of musical nationalism. It never rises to the level of Stalling, but its propulsive nerve is infectious. The Eurhythmics' Dave Stewart anchors proceedings with the anthemic, feel-good singalong, "Everybody All Over the World," while Tina Sugandh dishes up the obligatory sex-kitten vocal tease with the East-Asia-meets-club-beat slink of "River of Dreams." Disney soundtrack staples Baha Men also infuse the theme park standard "It's a Small World" with their typically breezy, if entirely weightless, Caribbean aplomb. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars As with every Disney soundtrack, it's missing something..........2004-08-08

This is a really good soundtrack for an excellent movie, however it's missing a lot of tracks that I wanted to have. For instance almost every track from the fight scenes, especially the from the fight in China when the composer actually used the Wong Fei Hung theme when the character shows up. Missing tracks, especially ones that I really liked makes my rating drop from 5 to 3 stars. I'm let down once again by Walt Disney Records. . .
