2 out of 5 stars Only way to get classic "Don't Tell Me".......2006-07-10

Since it's unavailable on most services, this album remains one of the few ways to get the classic song "Don't Tell Me". You pay for all the extra songs. Best to buy this used, get it in your iTunes, and ditch the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Lite, Fluffy and Refreshingly Fun.......2004-02-24

If you're at all interested in early eighties synth-pop and you missed Blancmange - do yourself a favor and check them out. What distinguishes this duo is the appealing fact that they didn't take themselves too seriously, unlike their angst-ridden, vanity struck contemporaries. Sure, Steve barely cracked a smile - but he was busy with his synths and drum machines and trying to keep the whole thing together. Neil simply enjoyed every minute of it - a big stupid grin on his face as he'd wrench out a deceptively simplistic guitar solo that would have made a 70's guitar god weep. But underneath the self-deprecating humor there was some pretty good music going on and I'm still enjoying Blancmange years after I've discarded the Visages, Numans, Modes and Yazoos. They were unpretentious - and their music was all the better for that.

3 out of 5 stars Sound of the early 80's.......2002-11-25

Neil Arthur and Stephen Luscombe formed Blancmange in 1979 as a clever little synth duo. They started hitting bit in 1982, with the 3rd single Living On The Ceiling selling over 300 000 copies and propelling the Happy Families album into a lengthy chart run. Second Helpings includes 9 of their chart singles and a couple of interesting B-sides. Arthur's dulcet voice and the Depeche Mode-like synths are a pleasant combination, almost but not quite putting Blancmange on a par with the aforementioned synth wonders and contemporaries like Ultravox. A valuable retrospective on the sound of the early 1980's.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars not a very impressive collection.......2006-03-24

I didn't know a whole alot about Blancmange when I decided to purchase this album. I had seen the "Living On The Ceiling" music video on an 80'sMTV channel & heard "Don't Tell Me" on satellite radio. I'd figure this collection would be to my liking, but I was disappointed. Alot of the tracks weren't memorable or catchy. "God's Kitchen", "I've Seen The Word" & "Feel Me" are good songs, they have that Talking Heads vibe to them. I'm not sorry I purchased this album, for I enjoyed a small percentage of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD...BUT ALL THE CDS NEED REMASTERING.......2003-05-14

This best of is just another example of the need of remastering the whole catalog. There are great songs lost as a result missing from Happy Families, Mange Tout, and Believe You Me. Waves, included here, has the possiblity of making one forget the troubles of the day and place one in the middle of a quick vacation of fun, clouds, and humor, what other bands can you say have done that?

Do not overlook this band...they had more talent than Depeche Mode, and others, at this time, and one wishes that they should have persued making more music together.

It's like a beautiful flower cut down...it makes one cry.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Blancmange.......2001-07-12

The Best of Blancmange? If you were in high school somewhere in the neighborhood of 1982 and 1986 you may remember this band. This collection pulls together the major highlights of this synth duo with odd hair and wacky senses of humor. Living on the Ceiling (their only scrape with the charts) and Vishnu have some eastern influences while Don't Tell Me and What's Your Problem provide some insight to how pervasive David Byrne's influence actually was in the eighties. This record has a generous selection of songs from their best release (Mange Tout) which included their deadpan cover of Abba's The Day Before You Came, fifteen years before covering Abba became fashionable. Consider them akin to OMD with substance, or Depeche Mode with a sense of humor. Either way, this is a fine collection of pop songs that will make you want to laugh or to dance.
