Gershwin Plays Gershwin: The Piano Rolls

ong of sitting in my back yard with the clouds blowing by and for the moment things feel OK.
The existing films of Gershwin (who died of a brain tumor at age 38 in 1937) show him to be a virtuoso at his instrument. His 1924 acoustic recording of Rhapsody In Blue (with the Paul Whiteman orchestra) is further evidence of this. But no film or recording has what is contained within the album GERSHWIN PLAYS GERSHWIN: THE PIANO ROLLS, and that is-- full fidelity range. The CD comes in a standard jewel case packaged in a heavy paper slipcover. Biographical liner notes are included along with details on the rolls. The earliest performance in this set is from 1916, made when Gershwin was an 18-year-old song plugger. My favorites here are "Swanee," from 1920, and "An American In Paris," from 1933, which is undoubtedly one of the last significant piano rolls ever made. Gershwin's dynamic performances are not in the least obscured by the few extra notes added to the piano rolls (such practice was standard in those days). Listening to these recordings is like sitting next to this brilliant man, observing his fingers fly over the keys as he plays some of his best work. TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 60:36
This album is charming in its own way -- a taste of the music and performance style of a bygone era. Someone complained that these rolls were edited. So what? I'm going to review the final product, now how it was made. Do you eat sausage? Ask not what's in it! I like to listen to this CD in short bits -- a few songs at a time. For some reason I find it to be fatiguing if I listen for more than 20 minutes or so. I'm not absolutely sure why this is so. Possibly the meter is just a little too metronomic on many of the songs. This lends a "mechanical" quality to the performances. Additionally, I felt that the dynamic range was restricted. The music does get louder and softer, because of the piano rolls themselves and because of the computer programming used to read the piano rolls -- the dynamics were deliberately adjusted by the record producers in some spots, if I read the liner notes correctly. And yet. And yet. Still these songs do not dynamically "breathe" fully in and out the way they ought to. I find this disappointing, but I think it has something to do with inherent limitations in piano roll recording technique. I'm guessing. Taken for what it is, it is an interesting concept, and the sound quality is very pleasant. The performances are very good for piano rolls, but fall short of what a good interpreter could do. Take, for example, the Rhapsody in Blue from Woody Allen's Manhattan soundtrack. Listen specifically to the piano part -- the dynamics and variations in rhythm. This is not by any means the best performance of Rhapsody, but it is better than the Gershwin rolls.
transcriptions of Jelly Roll Morton's piano rolls (on the same label) instead because most of those are exactly how he played them and in my opinion Morton was a better musician in every way than Gershwin.

Customer Reviews:
Anyway, when I bought this album I expected an album's worth of songs in the same Eurodance style which I had grown to know and love thanks to Real McCoy, 2 Unlimited, Fun Factory, and (remember "The Rhythm Of The Night?") Corona. To my surprise, there were some slow jams here too! Despite being well-sung by Melanie, as is everything here, the slow jams - especially "I'll Be There" (which is NOT the Jackson Five/Mariah Carey classic) - aren't as memorable as the dancefloor thumpers. "Be My Lover," the title song, "I Love To Love" and "The Heat Is On" are all red-hot, catchy, well-crafted Eurodance classics. And it is the talents of Melanie Thornton that make them really special. In the hands of any other singer these songs wouldn't sound nearly as hot. There's also "Where Do You Go," which is ALMOST the same song that became a hit in 1996 for the Cuban-American trio No Mercy - I say "almost" because the verses are different. Equally fun is Le Click's "Tonight Is The Night," a #89 Hot 100 hit in 1995. (Of course, after Melanie and Lane McCray got together as La Bouche, Le Click continued on with a new singer named Kayo Shekoni who was sort of a soundalike for Melanie, and scored a Top 40 hit in 1997 with "Call Me.") And there's an oldie here too - that would be "Fallin' In Love," the Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds #1 hit from 1975. The album version is a nice, breezy, mid-tempo pop tune that wouldn't sound out of place on adult contemporary radio. It's certainly far superior to the horrid Eurodance remix that was issued to radio stations after the success of "Be My Lover" and "Sweet Dreams." Actually, "Fallin' In Love" was originally La Bouche's first single in the United States in 1995, but it flopped, getting into the "Bubbling Under the Hot 100" chart for a few weeks and then vanishing. When it was re-promoted to radio the following year, RCA did not re-release the single and CHR stations played it as an album cut (though most of them, unfortunately, played the remix, which was not all that bad on its own, but was horrible compared to the album version). In short, this is a more-than-competent survey of the mid-1990s Eurodance sound, with a pair of big hit singles and a few extras as well. La Bouche injected some soul into the Euro beats and came up with a winner. Rest in peace, Melanie, you are still missed.

One of the tragic figures in blues-rock, Roy Buchanan possessed chops that matched those of any of his more acclaimed contemporaries, including Eric Clapton. His recording accomplishments, however, were problematic. Despite forecasts of stardom that corresponded with his 1972 solo debut (the Arkansas- born virtuoso made his debut as a sideman 15 years earlier), Buchanan never found the perfect forum for instrumental expression. After years of frustration, he hung himself in a jail cell in 1986 after being arrested for drunk driving. This 2 CD anthology stands as the definitive overview of Buchanan's career, mixing the best of his '70s and '80s records with a generous assortment of unreleased tracks. --Steve StolderCustomer Reviews:

use Roy only delivers a spoken intro, but other songs are seriously marred by his flat, deadpan delivery. The second CD is even worse, this time including an overlong jam around "Green Onions".
Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of Roy's and his best material is some of my favorite music. As an anthology, however, I'd prefer that he were remembered for his very best music and not some of his most uneven. This could have been edited down to a very good single disc. Instead, we're left with a two-disc set that you'll end up skipping through huge sections out of necessity.

Singer Annie Lennox and guitarist Dave Stewart first received notice in the Tourists, scoring a big U.K. hit in 1979 with a cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be With You." Emerging as the Eurythmics in 1981, Lennox's cabaret-tinged vocal style and Stewart's left-of-center songs took a while to mesh, but when they finally did, with the haunting, hook-filled 1983 No. 1 single, "Sweet Dreams" (accompanied by one of the most striking videos ever made), the two found themselves rocketing to stardom. This, their second album, also features their initial British hit, "Love Is a Stranger," and an icy-cool cover of Sam and Dave's r&b classic, "Wrap It Up." --Billy AltmanThis edition has been digitally re-mastered from the original master tapes by Eurythmics mastermind Dave Stewart, with input from collaborator Annie Lennox. In addition, there are seven bonus tracks: a mixture of b-sides, remixes, and previously unreleased material (notably a cover of Lou Reeds' beautiful "Satellite of Love"). The packaging is a six-panel digipack redesign orchestrated by Laurence Stevens Design, the firm who art-directed all the original releases, while the thick booklets contain rare photos and insightful, new sleeve notes.

m (Savage was the first CD I bought), it stands out in my opinion because of it's bizarre character throughout the album. The original version of "Sweet Dreams" as well as it's virtual twin album "Touch" suffered tremendously from the really poor volume quality details. Both of these albums were recorded on low-tech equipment and "Sweet Dreams" was recorded from September to November of 1982 and released in January of 1983. The 2005 deluxe edition though I feel really improves the sound quality in a way that I never would've thought possible. While the album was definitely showing it's age, the improved remastering makes it almost like as if a towel was lifted off the stereo speakers and makes a Stone Age sounding record sound brand new all over again!
No one can forget the experimental nature of its title track with it's famous video with Annie Lennox her gender-bending fashion style. The song itself too is awesome with it's incredible keyboard arrangements, innovative pre-techno drum beat as well as it's dramatic, dark melody. But other songs that stand out are the opening track "Love Is A Stranger", the menacing nature of "I Could Give You An Angel" and the R&B/ New Wave hybrid song that is "This Is The House" which combines the best of 1970s funk guitars with the electronic 80s New Wave sounds to create a real classic. For all the glory of the title track, it pales in comparison to what I consider the most transcendent track on here that closed out the older edition of this album entitled "This City Never Sleeps". As the previous songs in general have a more or less sunny afternoon but austere industrial atmosphere, this song has a much mellower and much darker but more pleasant evening dark mood compared to the rest of this album. The song begins with the sound of underground subway trains and becomes a very eerie, late night urban song with an ambient sound and incredible vocals by Annie. The strange melody of the song as well as the distant light guitar riffs that build in the background and increase into the foreground in sound is just amazing. The combination of this and the subway train track sound effects give the song among the best urban atmospheres of many early 1980s songs. At more than six minutes in length, "This City Never Sleeps" allows for a great amount of enjoyment that would not be possible had it been half as long. Out of all the tracks on this album, TCNS is without a doubt the best song on here, both on the old and remastered editions. As I listen to it, I am just impressed at how well it's held up over the years since it was recorded! Especially by 1983 standards, "This City Never Sleeps" is a year ahead of it's time and even ahead of songs that they did in the years the followed. Even songs that I did not mention are great as well.
The bonus tracks are mostly decent and actually add some flavor to the remastered edition that makes it much more adventurous than the old version was. Although most of them certainly are odd electronic New Wave noodlings that were odd enough to just stay in the b-side category, the six bonus tracks though are still a lot of fun to listen to even if their quality is variable. "Home Is Where The Heart" is one of the strangest songs I've ever heard from this duo. Monkey Monkey" and "Baby's Gone Blue" are decent experimental tracks but don't rank up to the rest but are still enjoyable to a degree. Included are two remixes done in 1991, one of is "Sweet Dreams" as well as "Love is a Stranger" both of which I feel do a wonderful job of giving them a whole different character. The Hot Remix of "Sweet Dreams" is darker, much heavier in mood and has a much heavier techno-drum beat, new keyboard parts as well as some haunting voice keyboard ambience to give the song a much stormier, more intense feel almost totally different from the original version. The Coldcut Remix of "Love Is A Stranger" is over 7 minutes long and has a much more of a sound that blends old school hip-hop and electronica keyboards to build the melody. Some of the `slushy' electronic sound effects as well as the amplified voice effects give the song a spookier sound but still a very flamboyant and sophisticated style to the point that had it not been for Annie's lyrics being song, would've sounded almost like a totally different song altogether. Some have criticized the inclusion of these two songs but I have to digress. I have to say that both "Sweet Dreams" and "Love is a Stranger" were redone incredibly well. The final track called "Satellite of Love" was previously unreleased until now and is now available for future generations to enjoy. The song sounds extremely dated, even by 1983 standards but is still enjoyable especially in the second half of the track. It closes this expanded edition of "Sweet Dreams".
I've always had an incredible admiration of Annie's lyric songwriting as well as her icy strength throughout her music career both with her partner Dave Steward as the Eurythmics and as a solo artist from "Diva" onwards. The remastered edition of "Sweet Dreams" is highly recommended even if you've had the original version for many years. It's that great! I never could've imagined the day that their wonderful albums would all get the treatment they deserved and "Sweet Dreams" in my opinion benefited the most from this! Highly recommended even if you already have the older edition.

Beautiful classic music that lulls you to sleep.
series. The theme for this one is "Baroque For Beauty Sleep" which seems to be a companion to "Baroque For Bathtime". Baroque music, especially the slower movements in many concertos, are exquisite nocturnal pieces that ease the transition from being awake to falling asleep. The beautiful, elegant, slow, graceful music of many of these pieces will definately relax you and even help you fall asleep. It's therapeutic. There are so many reasons one can buy this album. It can help you relax and soothe you, as already mentioned, and it can be played in the background of a message therapy session. It can serve as music for a romantic evening or dinner. And lastly, it hits the spot after a long day and you're ready to visit the world of dreams. Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, scored for lute and other Baroque period instruments, is the newest piece on the album. Respighi, a modern composer, was delving into neoclassic music and deliberately evoking the Baroque Era. It works wonderfully.
Whether used as lullaby inducing or just listening pleasure and relaxation, this is nice collection. Including wide array of instruments: strings, flute, panpipes, oboe, flute, harp, guitar, recorder, piano, and voice --- this is truly enjoyable. There is wide array of baroque composers as well --- Rephighi, Vivaldi, Bach, Albinoini, Telemann, and more. Great price, great variety, great addition to your CD collection.
There is a good cross sampling of various Baroque pieces and Baroque artists. The variety is the spice that makes this CD worth buying and listening to over and over again. This CD also works well on shuffle, which remakes it into a brand new album. There are a lot of oboes and string on this disc, and being a former oboist, I am electrified as I hear that instruments mellow honk! Guys! Don't be put off by the cover-this is a good disc. Good for the mind, heart, and soul!
This CD is also good for reading to, because it is easy on the ears but won't put you to sleep.

LOVE IS A STRANGER The third single from the album. I had first heard this song when I had first receive Eurythmics' greatest hits album. This is not quite what I had hoped for, but I would say that this song is a favorite of mine. I'VE GOT AN ANGEL I have said this many times and I'll say it again: Any song where the word 'Angel' is in the title, then the song has got to be outstanding. I was almost right about this one. This is not a bad song, but it could have been better. WRAP IT UP (duet with Green of Scritti Politti) I could definitely do without this song. I COULD GIVE YOU (A MIRROR) Great. THE WALK The second single from the album. Great. SWEET DREAMS (ARE MADE OF THIS) The fourth & final single from the album, as well as the album's title track. This is a cult classic all the way, despite the fact that it reached the #2 spot, instead of the #1 spot. In 1995, Marilyn Manson had did a cover of this song and he did an amazing job of it. He kept the same sound concept, but he made it heavy, draggy, and spooky to fit his image more. His rendition can be found on his 1995 album entitled, SMELLS LIKE CHILDREN. JENNIFER This is a moving ballad. I am not sure of what it means, but I can easily relax to this song. The thing that I find hard to understand is that there is only one verse and one bridge. The lyrics to the verse are, "...Jennifer, with your orange hair, Jennifer, with your green eyes, Jennifer, in your dress of deepest purple, Jennifer, where are you tonight? Jennifer, where are you tonight...?" That verse is said twice in the beginning and then leads into the bridge, where the lyrics to the bridge are: "...Underneath the water. Underneath the water. Underneath the water..." After the bridge, the verse is said one final time. THIS IS THE HOUSE The first single from the album. Great. SOMEBODY TOLD ME Not bad. THIS CITY NEVER SLEEPS Great. Now, as I had stated before, SWEET DREAMS (ARE MADE OF THIS) is on the same level as its predecessor, IN THE GARDEN. But this album featured a different sound: a synethesized 80s Pop & Rock sound, which is what makes it just as great as IN THE GARDEN.
The songs are top-notch, I prefer the obscurities here: ¨somebody told me¨ has a really sexy beat; ¨I 've got an angel¨ is pure 80's rhythm; and ¨I Could Give You ¨ is so damn catchy with its ¨...how can you be so cold ? ....¨ phrase, it makes me wonder why it was not realeased as a single or at least made it to the Eurythmics'greatest hits album. Ah, and the opening song ¨Love Is Stranger¨, what can I say about this out-of-this-world song? That I have used toothbrushes, mops and brooms to sing it at home when nobody sees me,for over a lifetime. Fantastic album. They should come up with more newborn music!!!
Beyond the videos, the music on this album is what's really important. With "Sweet Dreams" and "Love Is A Stranger," Annie's bitterness about love is surrounded by Dave's pulsating synthetic beats and soft, dissonant laser chimes. By just listening to these two songs, one would think that the Eurythmics had become a full-fledged New Wave synth band; and there are certainly other songs on here to appease that taste ("I've Got an Angel," "I Could Give You A Mirror"). But, the band refuses to be categorized. Several songs are textured by Dave's sleek guitar licks, adding some blues ("Wrap It Up") and even a tinge of latin ("This Is the House"). From beginning to end, "Sweet Dreams" flexes its muscles and relaxes, then flexes again and finally sighs with the brilliant "This City Never Sleeps." In fact, there is not a dull moment on this recording. While most of the albums from the eighties New Wave craze have dated and fallen into novelty, "Sweet Dreams" will remain one of the definitive albums of the genre and decade.
