Glen Velez is one of the few percussionists who could play a symphony on a frame drum. A virtuoso who has performed with everyone from Steve Reich to Paul Winter, there isn't a rhythm he can't negotiate nor a sound he can't coax out of his thin round drums. Years ago, Velez got sidetracked from world music and the avant-garde into the healing-music movement, yet he manages to craft some actual compositions out of music whose purported purpose is to "stimulate the first and second chakras." With percussion from across the world, Indian vocalese, South American ocarina, and good old North American harmonica played by Howard Levy, Velez throws in the ethno-kitchen sink. Bansuri flute player Steve Gorn guests on some of the best tracks, including "Ostia," on which Velez playing a nordic harp, and the sprightly "Citric Motion," in which Sufi-esque chant meets Indian bansuri over dizzying layers of cross-rhythms. Rhythms of Awakening can be exhilarating in its percussive interplay, but can also can sound like rhythm demonstrations. --John Diliberto

intriguing vocalist and debut album.......2005-01-29

This is an impressive first effort by a promising new age female vocalist. Lisa Reagan's voice is haunting and strongly reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt. McKennitt is, in my opinion, the better artist of the two, but if you like McKennitt's work, you will like this album.

In addition to Reagan's voice, the music on this album has a strong beat, thanks to some expert drum work (somewhat unusual for new age), and good work on the strings. The best track is "I call the rain," which has an almost irresistible catchy chorus you will find yourself humming long after the song is done. Other strong tracks are "Spirit Dance" and "Tapestries in Time."

In sum, if you like the work of such artists as Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Deanta, Maire Brennan, and Lynn Morrison, this album is definitely worth a listen.

Misses the mark.......2004-08-22

The music is kind of interesting. I think the artist is trying to be deep but the lyrics miss the mark. They just never take hold. This may have been a better instrumental album. I'm not sure that I would give this CD a second listen.
