Product Description

Boston-based artist Eilen Jewell puts her own beautiful stamp on old country, folk and blues and comes out sounding like the time-traveling, sweet-voiced lovechild of Bessie Smith, Gillian Welch, and The Be Good Tanyas. Her thick, warm voice and authentic country songwriting have led the Boston Herald to name her “Boston’s Americana gem.” Boundary County, inspired in part by her home state of Idaho, is Eilen's first full-length studio album. Recorded at Middleville Studio in North Reading, Massachusetts by Chris Rival in December, 2005, Boundary County features thirteen original compositions woven together with threads of loneliness, homesickness, regret, sinning, traveling, dreaming, hope, and redemption.

4 out of 5 stars New Boston star.......2006-08-11

A very laid back Album, very easy on the ear, definately a star in the making.
Very dificult to package a little bit folky and a little bit country roots/americana, very bare sound just a lot of voice, and little bit of guitar and drums very nice indeed especially later in the day after a bad day at work, relaxing music for adults.

Product Description

From the minds of songwriters Greg Barkley and Daniel Hoxmeier comes a catchy post-pop band that loves themselves a tasty melody. Both Greg and Daniel were home schooled through high school and, for lack of anything better to do, learned to play the guitar and any other useful instruments they could get their collective hands on. Teaming up with Joel Calvin (drums), they formed the band (poor) yorik, an experimental rock band, which after 8 months they decided was a much too depressing style of music. The trio spent a month in deep meditation and self reflection (during which Joel found inner peace), and it was decided that they would from then on be called The Jolly Rogers. However, upon discovery of several pop-punk bands from Nebraska and Florida, and a group that frequents renaissance festivals dressed in pirate garb, the band decided it was time for another name change. They chose Oh No! Oh My!, named for a song by The Robot Ate Me. In July of 2005, the band began work on a brand new collection of songs after a demo from the year prior was met with a strong response over the internet. Greg and Daniel moved in January 2006 from their Hometown in Austin, TX, to their temporary home in Nashville, TN, to go to an Audio Engineering school for 9 months. Joel soon followed in April, and now the band are set to to release their first full length album on August 1st.

5 out of 5 stars Oh No! Oh YES!.......2007-03-11

No one can not like this album.

Oh No! Oh My! is probably the sweetest three-piece ever, crooning twists of the phrase ranging from "nice day for a drive-by shooting" to "let's ride bikes into the sea". They know how to craft the tricky melody; the make-dancer; that one song that you keep on repeat, twenty-three times in a row.

Trust me, it's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums.......2007-01-09

I absolutely love this CD, can't wait to hear more from them.
Best songs are Walk in the Park, Jane is Fat, and I Have No Sister.

5 out of 5 stars Best indie pop record since the Unicorns.......2006-08-10

Don't let my use of the word 'record' and reference to the Unicorns up there make you think I'm some pretentious indie music snob who wants to protect his beloved gems for all eternity. Oh No! Oh My!'s debut self-titled album deserves praise for every little second (Well, the vast majority of them) and they need to be made aware of. Three young men playing ecclectic instruments and recording in bedrooms may be somewhat common these days, but not many of them get to play Lollapalooza (I'm certain I butchered the spelling) three days after the release of their first LP. Brilliantly blissful melodies are thrown around like love between friends in the form of sound waves, and never have I heard better use of chimes/mallets/glockenspiel. Each song is meticulously crafted instrumentally so that nothing you hear becomes stagnat. Peppy lyrics dominate, which is a wonderful contrast to ... everything that's out there, really. Simplistic songwriting works perfectly, especially in "Walk in the Park" and the same-line-over-and-over-but-still-wonderful "Reeks and Seeks" and "Women Are Born In Love." I cannot even articulate how much I adore these lovely folks, but, I suggest at least giving them a looksee.I highly doubt that many will be disappointed.

This is the first time this album has been released on CD from Rising Son Records. It has been out of print for several years. Now digitally remastered, we are pleased to make it available again with the best quality of sound available. The songs on this album are Arlo's usual eclectic mix that sounds familiar yet fresh all at the same time. "Me And My Goose" is a hilarious Arlo classic. "Presidential Rag" is a political snapshot of the early 70s. Arlo does Woody's "Deportees" and makes the song his own. This is a wonderful album, enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-07-09

This album is incredible. I only wish there were more songs. There's so much talent and feeling on the album, he just needs to put it into more music. Can't wait for his next album to come out. If you don't know the artist, check out his website, he has some samples from the cd and then you'll understand why you have to buy the album.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect piece of music.......2007-07-04

The first time, that I heard a song from The White Buffalo, was in my favorite surfvideo "Shelter". From that time I was searching for more stuff from that guy... but unfortunately unsuccessfully... Some years left, and one day I took a look in my eventcalendar, so I was totally stoked when I saw, that he give a concert in munich... It was fantastic!!! And so is his EP! A voice like earth and velvet combined with diversified and refreshing guitarplay... absolutely recommendable!
But the only negative thing is: It's an EP, that means ONLY SIX SONGS! What a pity...I need much more! :)

    5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-06-19

his voice is incredible, deep and soulful. interesting guitar rhythms.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and raw.......2007-05-22

If you appreciate an amazing voice and beautiful songwriting, you must check out this ep. Jake is such a talent that I feel personal duty to spread the good word. This is a jewel and if you take the opportunity to listen, you will feel the same need to share.

This is one of my top desert island CDs. It is incredibly soothing, grounding and quiet -- but strong, too. The music is absolutely mesmerizing, with beautiful music on top of quiet drumming. 5 out of 5 stars Posthumous Recap........2006-03-11

Indeed, 'One Last Time' nicely sums up Grizzard's brand of good ol' boy comedy, collecting here for the first time some previously unheard archive material. Some of it won't be exactly "new", given that varied forms appeared on previous releases; nevertheless, Lewis is in fine form in this collection, while the audience itself is enthusiastic and in good spirits. A minor quibble appears in the guise of a few selfserving tracks ("interruptions" are more accurate) of country legend Bill Anderson, a friend of the late comedian. They serve no real purpose and are, frankly, annoying. Still, this fine collection is a great overall recap of Grizzard's routine.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album The Vandals Ever Recorded.......2003-03-16

This "joke" is one of the best albums of the 80's. The reissue here is still drop-dead hilarious, but the addition of "Play That Country Tuba, Cowboy" it is a veritable "milk through the nose" laugh riot. Just like with post-punk pranksters like El Vez and The Dead Milkmen, neo-baby-punx of the 21st century are most likely too serious about a genre that died 20 years ago to see the genius here. Maybe one day, they will lighten-up enough to realize that their "punk" is just mainstream fluff, and outrageous, out-of-bounds albums like this one will be the ones to endure the test of time.

4 out of 5 stars Cowpunk at its best.......2000-12-07

first of all, congrats to the real punks who actually knew this albums original title (Slippery When Ill). When I first heard this, I did not comprehend what it was about. But I kept it and listened to it every now and then. As I got older, It finally hit me, albums like this one are about the musicans ability. Yes, this album sounds like the Vandals are making fun of country but, I think they were trying to experiment with each of their own styles--to see what they could do. This is why they and other bands from the 80's are still going. I wish the re-release of this had kept the original title, and Shi'ite punk. There was no need for the last two songs. Be a Smart Punk, be wary of Punk Light Bands, and death to top 40 and egotistical bouncers. Sorry for any spelling or grammar errors. Keep it alive!

4 out of 5 stars Punk geniuses strike again!.......2000-10-03

Punk legends the Vandals prove again why they're better than the rest. 10 hilarious punk-a-billy tracks that throw water balloons at country music while playing it. The lyrics are brilliant as usual on a Vandals disc, but this disc isn't the Vandals CD you should start with. Vandals fans who REALLY get the Vandals will appreciate this clever record. Best tracks include: "Goop all over the phone", "Susanville" and "Elvis Decanter". Great CD for Vandals fans, just make sure you're familiar with their other work or you'll be left scratching your head like Cheez-it was. Vandals rule!

1 out of 5 stars Vandals? Who are they this isnt them...........2000-07-20

Well I thought this Vandal Cd was gonna be alittle better than it is.This is one of the worst Cd's I have ever heard in my life.My Dog could have made a better Cd then this I am very sad that they made this Cd.Lets just all hope that they dont do another like this. All there other Cds were good. But this one BOMBED.

4 out of 5 stars Goop all over the punks.......2000-05-21

Shame on the poseurs for not paying attention. Yes, this is a re-issue of the semi-legendary "Slippery When Ill" with a couple of changes. The Vandals aren't the clown princes of punk for nothing, so if you don't get it maybe you better stay home. Joey and the fellas never did a better job of laughing at themselves and at the pseudo-punks who cried about the band going country. Yeah, it's missing "Shiite Punk", but what's in a tree-fort, anyway? Buy it if you're not a sheep.

    5 out of 5 stars A People's Troubadour.......2006-01-31

The political consciousness developed in my youth coincided with an expansion of my musical tastes under the influence of the great blues and folk revivals of the 1960's. Unfortunately my exposure to the blues greats was mainly on records as many of them had been forgotten, retired or were dead. Not so with the folk revival which was created mainly by those who were close contemporaries. Alas, they too are now mainly forgotten, retired or dead. It therefore is with special pleasure that I review Utah Phillips Songbook while he is very much alive.

Many of the folksingers of the 1960's attempted to use their music to become troubadours for social change. The most famous example, the early Bob Dylan, can be fairly described as the voice of his generation at that time. However, he fairly quickly moved on to other concepts of himself and his music. Bob Dylan's work became more informed by the influences of Rimbaud and Verlaine and the French Symbolists of the late 1800's and thus moved away to a more urban, sophisticated vision. From the start and consistently throughout his long career Utah has acted as a medium giving voice to the troubles of ordinary people and the simpler ethos of a more rural, Western-oriented gone by day in the American experience. He evokes in song the spirit of the people Walt Whitman paid homage to in poetic form and John Dos Passos and John Steinbeck gave in prose. He sits conformably in very fast company. Therefore, Utah Phillips can justly claim the title of a people's troubadour.

A word about politics. Generally, one rates music without reference to politics. However, Utah has introduced the political element by the way he structured the Songbook. Each song is introduced by him as to its significance heavily weighted to his political experiences, observations and vision. Thus, political comment is fairly in play here. Utah is a long time anarchist and unrepentant supporter of the Wobblies (International Workers of the World, hereafter IWW). Every militant cherishes the memory of the class battles led by the IWW like the famous Lawrence strike of 1912 and honors the heroes of those battles like Big Bill Haywood and Vincent St. John and the militants they recruited to the cause of the working class in the first part of the 20th century. They paved the way for the later successful organization drives of the 1930's.

Nevertheless, while Utah and I would both most definitely agree that some old-fashioned class struggle by working people in today's one-sided class war would be a very good thing we as definitely differ on the way to insure a permanent victory for working people in order to create a decent society. In short, Utah's prescriptions of good moral character, increased self-knowledge and the creation of small intentional communities are not enough. Under modern conditions it is necessary to take and safeguard political power against those who would quite consciously deny that victory. History has been cruel in some of the bitter lessons working people have had to endure for not dealing with the question of taking state power to protect their interests. But, enough said. I am more than willing to forgive the old curmudgeon his anarchist sins if he'll sing `I Remember Loving You' the next time he tours the Boston area.

4 out of 5 stars Icon of Folk Songs & Storytelling.......2005-08-19

This is a great box set by a true master of folk songs and stories. I've been to many a Utah concert.

Yet I can't give it 5 Stars. How can a 4 CD compilation omit two of his classics? :

Hallelujah I'm A Bum, and Moose Turd Pie.

5 out of 5 stars Overdue Compilation from a Master.......2005-05-24

In this day of proliferation of boxed sets from even marginal figures, we are fortunate to finally have a collection of Utah's work from the early '70s through the '90s, mostly recorded in live performance from a variety of sources, together with one disc containing performances of his songs by others. Utah's studio albums are still availiable, so this is no "greatest hits" repackaging of available material, but consists in the main previouly unavailable work. The exceptions are 5 cuts from "Loafer's Glory," and one from Legends of Folk. Similarly, a few of the covers are from an albumn by Kate Brislin and Jody Steicher.

Liner documentation could be better, as there is no information on the other performers on the cuts where Utah is not solo, although recording dates and locations are given. My only real beef, however, is the absence of a version of what I believe is his greatest song, "I Remember Loving You," either by Utah, or by others who have covered this such as Priscilla Herdman. But I'm most thankful for the live performances of all of his other great train, polictical and love songs. The spoken intros. to each cut are great to have, particularly for those who have not heard Utah in concert. Utah, I ran into you a couple of years ago near Union Station in Chicago; thanks again for this and I hope you keep writing and performing.

The music is borderline between jazz and easy listening(i don't like the new age notion). Beautiful is all I can say!

4 out of 5 stars Nice change in music.......2007-01-09

I've heard this artist on our digital cable so bought the entire cd for my son ( a musician) for his birthday, not sure if all the selections would interest him because of the affects. Surprisingly, those were the very ones he liked because of the uniqueness of the the style....so it was a home run.

5 out of 5 stars Best New-age/Jazz CD This Year!.......2006-11-06

Jeff Oster's CD Released climbs the peaks of emotional and musical purity, slipping the listener into moments of serene clarity. Oster's As I Live and Breathe track heralds visions of the perfect summer day. Flowing waves of melodic dual flugelhorns wrap themselves into a musical drama that unfolds into a perfect symmetry of life at its most poignant.
