John Tesh's name is often associated with the notion of bad music. This is an unfortunate and unfair perception since Tesh actually exhibits commendable skills in a little-explored musical niche--the pop-rock instrumental. Those talents are nicely displayed on this audio rendering of his 1995 performance (in the company of the Colorado Symphony) at suburban Denver's Red Rocks Amphitheater. Influenced by old-line progressive acts such as Rush and Yes, Tesh specializes in creating instrumental tempests in pop-music teacups, framing his favorite themes--optimism, romance, and triumph--with anticipation-building preludes and melodic, high-octane crescendos. Among many flavorful selections, his best include the engaging dual melodies that adorn "Garden City" and the chest-swelling progression of "A Thousand Summers." The music works here better than it does on the video shown on PBS, since you don't have to watch all the mugging and choreographed prancing shared by Tesh and his eight backup musicians. The Collector's Edition of this release includes a six-song, 23-minute bonus CD that includes "Roundball Rock" (heard on NBC's NBA telecasts) and a few other of Tesh's broadcast themes. --Terry Wood

Like a lot of his jam-band compatriots, Dave Matthews's personality can come off as muted in the studio, but really spreads out live--which makes this a must-have for fans who don't already have the bootleg, or nineteen more from the same period. But absent a hits sampler, Live at Red Rocks could also be the best Matthews album for more tentative listeners. It draws heavily from the Under the Table and Dreaming material, as well as from the then-upcoming Crash. "All Along the Watchtower," previously only available on an indie EP, ends the set. --Gavin McNett

5 out of 5 stars They Rock at Red Rocks!.......2007-03-20

Even a live recording of the Dave Matthews Band is an ideal way to be exposed to their immense talent for the first time. This is an early recording of the group, a live performance during the summer of 1995 but further proof of how great they sounded as a live act from the beginning years. Most of the material contained here are songs from their major debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, but they do include songs that were brand new and being tested at the time, and that would eventually turn up on 1996's Crash like "Two Step," "Dive In, Drive Out," and "Proudest Monkey." There are also songs the band recorded very early on before they had a major recording contract like this show's opener in "Seek Up," one of the band's best tracks and this thirteen-minute version is a spectacular performance with smooth horns, throbbing bass lines, and Tinsley's humming violin solo that leads into Matthews' agonizing vocal. "The Best of What's Around," is like rock being fused with jazz, and "Dancing Nancies," is intense, explosive, and relentless in the way the band jams out with a climatic ending. Plus there's "Lie in Our Graves," "Ants Marching," and concluding with a tribute to the late Jimi Hendrix with an amazing version of "All Along the Watchtower." The whole set list is awesome considering how early a recording this is for the band. Another thing that makes this release so unique is how the Dave Matthews Band brought back the whole concept of recording and releasing live albums for the commerical market, and reminding music lovers how we once loved the idea of having a live concert in our living room.

If "Louisiana Bayou" on the DVD with Robert Randolph doesn't do it for you, you are already dead. Jammin' DMB at their best!

4 out of 5 stars Good Effort.......2006-01-29

I really dont like Dave Matthews music that much, but there is one thing that you have to give him and his band credit for. They are very very good musicans. This is the one album that they have that I happen to like, since I think the Live Material is much better then any of the studio work. This is a good concert to listen to, and I highly recommend it to anyone who just wants to kick back and listen to some real good jams. ENJOY

Before I review this album let me share with you a brief bit of DMB's history snce this was recorded

1996: Crash is Released
1997: This wonderful Album is released
1998: Before These Crowded Srteets is released
2000: The Lilywhite Sessions are left
2001: Everyday is released; The Lillywhite Sessions are leaked
2002: Busted Stuff is released
2005: Stand Up is released.

bow alot has changed in 10 years, and so has DMB's sound.

This 2 disc jam fest may be a shock to newer DMB fans, who are used to the radio hits.

while there are a few of those on here, they're not this recordings best stuff.

RR95 (as hardcore fans have abbriviated it) starts off with Seek Up, which dictates the pace for the rest of the concert.

the first disc is golden, straying from the radio singles(except for Satlelite which is amazing on this recording)

the second disc doesn't stop that vibe, and makes this truely a greeat live album.

1 out of 5 stars John Tesh is so Punk .......2006-03-03

John Tesh is the hardest rockin' rocker! As he rocks he fits in the same Circle as GG.Allin, Septic Death, Amy Grant, Brotha Lynch, 3 inches of Blood, and many others.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-07-17

This music is excellent! I envy Tesh for being able to create such wonderful, original songs. This entire CD is fantastic; each tune really stands out; perfect for road trips. I love it. In particular, tracks 1, 2, 4, and 7 are amazing; my favorite is number 4! Great, great stuff to listen to!!

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat & No Distractions.......2003-06-13

I was looking for a CD I could workout to (I hate listening to DJ's babble) without getting either distracted by the lyrics, or ending up with a tune in my head all day; this one is it! The concert delivers at least 50 minutes of quick paced, motivational music. This is one you can listen to over and over and not get tired of listening. Wish I could find more like it!!

Taking their moniker from the vodu priest at the forefront of the Haitian slave revolution of the early 19th century, Boukman Eksperyans are very much a band for the people, of the people. Blending the deeply controversial traditional religion vodu with Haitian folk forms and modern instrumentation of rock, funk, and jazz, Boukman make music for dancing, praying, trancing out, and in short elevating both the audience and themselves spiritually and politically. This recording, captured during Reggae at Red Rocks in August 1998, is revivalistic in nature: leader Lolo Beaubrun orates between songs, asserting that vodu (and in turn Boukman's offering of praise) comes from the same oneness that was taught by Jesus, Buddha, and Krishna, among others. Shot through with the complex rhythms coaxed from a borrowed Latin drum set, the spicily romantic French Creole tongue, and feisty guitar lines, the set is taken largely from Boukman's acclaimed Revolution album, coming to a head with "Pawol Tafia (The Drunkard's Words)," an ultimately celebratory anthem of freedom. --Paige La Grone

Time was when Rickie Lee Jones and Tom Waits were fellow travelers with a shared neo-boho, singer-songwriter style, the self-conscious musical equivalent of characters from an Edward Hopper tableau. But unlike Waits, who got in touch with his inner Beefheart and embraced a more avant-garde approach, Jones has largely stayed the cocktail crooner course, refining her melodic sensibility and continuing to inject generous doses of folk, jazz, R&B, and world music influences into her itinerant hipster shtick. (Strains of reggae, zydeco, and Dixieland, along with a vocal assist from Lyle Lovett, find their way into this album's version of "Love Is Gonna Bring Us Back Alive.") Compared to Naked Songs, her 1994 plunge into the realm of the unplugged, this live outing is more representative of the full range of Jones's strengths, with gloriously polished yet vital renditions of favorites such as "Rodeo Girl," "Satellites," "Coolsville," and the obligatory "Chuck E.'s in Love." Along the way, Jones serves up memorable covers of "Gloria" and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," dispenses onstage parental advice, and, inspired by exceptional vocal and instrumental arrangements throughout, generally sings up a storm. Like Joni Mitchell before her and Sophie B. Hawkins after, Jones may no longer be the commercial flavor of the month, but this live recording serves as an engaging testament to her steadfast artistry. --Bill Forman

      4 out of 5 stars Appealing Addition.......2007-03-11

I found this Rickie Lee in the budget bin of a local retailer clearing slow-moving titles. "Live @ Red Rocks" never got to the top of my priority list with so many musical choices; however, I'm VERY pleased to have this live disc. Rickie Lee's sound pops at this Colorado venue. "Satellites" jumps alive with her band's backing vocals and Tony Morales' drums stomping out the rhythm. "Coolsville" has Rickie's vocals that sounds offhand & casual but gains intensity as she punches the lyric with Michael Stewart's trumpet squealing with appeal, "You stick it here, you stick it over there, but it never fits." "Chuck E's in Love," "Flying Cowboys" & "Rodeo Girl" cast strong sparks in the live versions. "Youngblood" rocks out with lots of fun. Rickie recasts Gerry & the Pacemakers' 1960's hit with her wistful voice and swaying rhythm fitting the classic melody like a glove. The set ends with Van Morrison's "Gloria" where Rickie Lee rocks joyfully. There is a lot of crowd noise on the recording, which shows how much the crowd was with her. Overall, this is an appealing addition to those for whom Rickie Lee Jones is a special artist. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Great performance, poor recording.......2003-03-28

This must have been a great show. The band is tight. It's wonderful to hear Rickie in a live ensemble setting. Her voice is strong and lovely. This would be a favorite CD of mine if not for the quality of the recording itself.

I enjoy "raw" live recordings like those from bands like moe. But this CD could have used a scrubbing in post-production. It sounds like a bootleg. And that would be okay, too, but for the too frequent dropouts in the left or right channel (really noticeable with headphones), and the subtle but all too present hum of the amplifiers in the background.

My advice is to check out this recording for yourself before buying it. You may love it. But it left me feeling a bit annoyed and disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not like the live stuff from her Web site.......2001-12-19

If you like Rickie Lee, make sure you visit her web site where
she sells MP3 live recordings, direct to you. There you will
find the opposite of this one: quieter, looser, quirkier. The
offerings there (www.rickieleejones.com) are also often complete
shows. This one *is* as the other reviews suggest: (high-)
powered, poppy, punchy. The thing is, I don't know Rickie Lee
and neither do you (and neither do these other reviewers). So
who can comment on her wishes, and who knows but what she wants
all of these sides of her performance persona exposed. In this
performance, she took pains to put together a *very* slick band,
complete with muted trumpet ornaments, multi-part harmonies,
etc. And it rocks. And if you feel like complaining about the
slick production, save your breath and your time, go to her
website, and download the quiet sensitive stuff until your
fingers go numb. That stuff is great, too!

5 out of 5 stars Maybe You Had To Be There?.......2001-12-12

I saw this show. It was a beautiful night and a great concert.
Lyle Lovett opened for RLJ; and was really good too. I highly recommend this cd to RLJ fans. If you like Rickie Lee; and live cds you will appreciate this; the energy comes through!

2 out of 5 stars the label must have made her..........2001-12-12

This is rock star Rickie. Loud crowd noise. Overproduced pop hits.

If you want the radio version of Rickie Lee Jones, by all means, be my guest. But if you've bought her last five CDs and prefer the introspective, thoughtful, clever and occasionally disturbing Rickie Lee, then you really need her acoustic live CD.

It made me sad to listen to this, because I can't image that RLJ really wanted to make this CD. If she did, I can't wait to hear her next studio CD, which I'm sure would be both a crowd pleaser and insightful. As it is, this belongs on Top 40, I'm afraid.

My mother bought this CD and I never wanted to listen to it, but... I found out that two of the songs are from the USAF Thunderbirds air demonstartion and I have love these songs ever since. "Barcelona" and "Shock" are my favorites, but I may be influenced :)

This reminds me of the first time I tasted Cheez Whiz...kinda cheesy...convenient..straight out of the tube..but wait a minute..its always cheeze whiz...no matter how you slice it...John has a great smile and great hair...but I wonder if anything beyond the realm of the triad has ever interested him... This reminds me of my first tasting of cheeze whiz...cheesy..whizzy..and definitely cheezewhizzy....perhaps time to put it back in the tube...and try again when youve figured out some new chords and have some new crackers for the cheeze....thanks john....keep searchin

5 out of 5 stars Just give this one a chance.......2000-03-06

I used to hate Tesh. Leno made fun of him and it seemed that his music must suck. Then I heard Live at Red Rocks. It seems that people can't accept Tesh even though they know nothing about his music. His music is majestic and exhilarating. He is a master of the piano, and to think that he writes and then composes the music by himself is simply amazing. There are so many inspiring tunes on this disc that I would be doing the CD a disservice to mention only a few. One of the songs will be my wedding song, I have decided. I am a huge fan of groups ranging from Air Supply to Van Halen and Counting Crows, so take my word--it's worth a try.

3 out of 5 stars Good even for non-fans.......1998-06-19

I'm not a particular fan of John Tesh, but I had to own this CD once I heard "Barcelona."

Most of John Tesh's best works are contained on this CD, so people who are usually bored with his work (like myself) may have a change of heart.

The Special Edition is probably best reserved for hard-core John Tesh fans. Those last six tracks were left off the original edition for a reason.

Although I'd recommend the original version over the special edition, either won't disappoint even moderate fans of John Tesh.
