Missa Johnouchi is a Tokyo-born pianist/composer whose chief musical pursuit is international soundtrack work. For this, her debut recording for the Pacific Moon label, Johnouchi surrounds herself with a small string ensemble, a contemporary guitar-bass-percussion trio and four musicians playing traditional Chinese instruments--the erhu (a long, narrow, bowed stringed instrument), the pipa (a pear-shaped, four-stringed lute), the yang qin (duclimer) and the gu zheng (cousin on the Japanese koto). Seeking to evoke imagery of an ancient trade route that parallels Asia's famed Silk Road, Johnouchi creates languid, formal-sounding tone poems that could either soothe the spirit or annoy the senses, depending on how you respond to the higher-pitched character of the Chinese instrumentation. Johnouchi's slow-go pieces cater to those in a reflective state of mind whose tastes lean toward lite pop-classical music and who are receptive to traditional Chinese influences. Her two solo piano selections, "Springtime," and her solo reprise of the opening track, "Asian Wind," are attractive works with broader appeal. Nice bonus: the pop-open spine of the CD case includes four sticks of incense. --Terry Wood

Product Description
The magnificent strings and graceful tones of traditional Chinese instruments create a gentle sweetness that enfolds the listener, and unveils a bridge that links the East and West.

To enhance your enjoyment of the music, fragrant incense sticks are included in the spine of the CD jewel case.

    type of atmosphere.

    5 out of 5 stars Pleasing & Relaxing.......2006-03-02

I heard this cd on a return flight from London. I replayed it a few times as it is very relaxing and a pleasing mixture of contemporary sounds and Asian tonal qualities. I ordered it and one for a friend. He too is enjoying it a great deal. I was not familiar with Missa Johnouchi but may now explore her other offerings. I recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2003-05-15

This is a good CD. It's very relaxing and the instrument that the person plays is really cool. However, I do not like this CD as much as Jia Peng Fang's RAINBOW. But this CD is still great. It's a very soothing CD and great background music for dinner or a relaxing bath. Recommended highly. Enjoy!!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Just same.......2001-06-10

Good! but There ara many genre and scales in asia. Listening firsttime, it's exquisite and philosophicilly. Later! it is some boring .I think just same other atists.

Most of the time when I buy a new age soundtrack online, i usually only like a song or two on the sound track. But the album asian blossoms, i love all the songs on it. i usually play her songs late at night, when i am surfing on the web or talking on the net. I even have my recorder set to replay. I love the music of asian blossoms. its so soothing, calm, relaxing, and a beautiful album of music.
