Anne Dudley is an enigmatic figure. She's a founding member of the British dance group Art of Noise, a noted film composer with an Academy Award for The Full Monty soundtrack, and she's a classically trained keyboardist. In recent months, Anne Dudley has released a new Art of Noise CD, The Seduction of Claude Debussy, that adds dance beats to the classical French composer's melodies, and she has a solo album, Ancient & Modern, on which she rearranges carols, hymns, and fugues for orchestra.

Ancient & Modern lives up to its title. She takes the Bach prelude "Coventry Carol" and Tallis's "Canon" and arranges them for orchestra and a choir called the Sixteen. Although these recordings should rightly be called adaptations and arrangements, Dudley takes writing credits for all the album's music, including venerable hymns like "Veni Emmanuel."

The album is at its best when Dudley shows her contemporary influences, as on "Canticles of the Sun and Moon." The song is based around the hymn "From All Who Dwell Beneath the Sky," but Dudley gives it a minimalist turn with cyclical marimba lines. She performs a similar fete with "Veni Emmanuel," building an unlikely tension and dynamic explosiveness in this usually sedate hymn. --John Diliberto

While the modern worship movement has revolutionized Christian music, lead worshippers realized that in their zeal to write cutting-edge church music they forgot the songs that were cutting that "edge" once upon a time. Add some creative contemporary arrangements and electricity to the originals and you have the composite that makes up the Ancient and Modern Hymns collection. For those who caught Passion artists singing some of these timeless classics during the 2003 tour, you know how emotionally moving they are live. Producer Nathan Nockels keeps that in mind and does a great job of capturing the live essence recorded in Atlanta's North Point Community Church. Of course no Passion release can be without David Crowder and Chris Tomlin and both give us some special moments on Hymns, including Crowder's "Doxology" and the magnificent "All Creatures Of Our God and King." Tomlin's reworking of "O Worship The King" and the compelling "Take My Life" are not to be outdone. Nockels and wife Christy (known as Watermark) also provide one of the finer moments with the elegant beauty of "Praise To The Lord the Almighty." Matt Redman and Charlie Hall fill out the release with a solid but unremarkable quality. --Michael Lyttle

The CD is great and came just as expected. Thanks for your great service and supply of a great product.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-08-18

This album is a refreshing mix of hymns with a twist. Passion does an excellent job in instrumenting the hymns: keeping dynamics both traditional and modern. Most of these hymns have new choruses or bridges added, which mostly augment the songs and lead the listener into deeper worship.

What I like most about this album is that there is room to reflect the lyrics of the hymns. When singing hymns in some churches, the organist can tend to just run through the hymns quickly without time for reflection or deeper worship. This dynamic Passion album often repeats lines, verses, or choruses and has musical interludes to allow the listener to participate instead of just listening.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but shy of awesome.......2006-05-09

I love the old hymns: so beautiful and inspiring. This album proves that some of the best hymns can be done in a contemporary style without destroying them, except for one: Chris Tomlin really butchered "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name" in a big way. I dont claim to be a purest, but there really is no need for taking a wonderful hymn such as this and making it 'better' by jacking with the original melody (by simplifying it); he only robbed the hymn of its majesty and musical beauty. What a shame. On the other hand he did a wonderful job on "Take My Life"...maybe the best track on the album. Kudos to Watermark for "Praise Ye the Lord the Almighty" and "Fairest, Lord Jesus": they provide the paradigm for doing an old hymn in a contemporary style while preserving what makes the hymn great. The job they did makes the album worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A Bit of Heaven on Earth.......2006-03-30

In my top three favorites, this album brings worshippers together in a way that no recording I've heard has before. Nothing but the best of concerts can beat it for a taste of Heaven. It sends my spirit soaring. Filled with ancient hymns, which I have always loved, it does them in a way that is passionate and moving. Starting out with "O Worship The King," the emphasis is on worship. These songs are often sung with a low mummbling, or a cheesy, "listen to how great my voice is." Not so with this one. The artists, male and female, are gifted, and their voices are instruments lifting up the songs, not the other way around. Though the rockish beat that punctuates these hymns, and U2-like guitar bits, might disturb some of the most conservative worshippers, most worshippers, young and old would love it. Me? I'm hoping this begins a movement to bring back these meaningful hymns to places of worship. If the passion that their great lyrics evokes stands out more with a bit of guitar, all the better! The one complaint I do have is occasionally, twice that I recall, the artists do the "Yes Jesus, Lord, Father, yes yes, you are king" repeating that modern worship songs are often bogged down with. A small "price" for this glorious album.
Compare to "I'll Fly Away" Jars of Clay Or Bits of Newsboy worship albums.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful musical experience.......2002-04-22

This is my favorite cd. Ann Dudley beautifully blends high worship with a "new age" sound. (Remember, even Enya is considered new age, its not a devil sound. As a matter of fact, most of the songs are about God.) It is the most wonderful musical experience that I have ever had and continues to be each time I press play.

5 out of 5 stars SAMPLED AND CLAIMED.......2002-01-11

In a sense Anne Dudley made her name by sampling."Close To The Edit" by the Art Of Noise actually sampled a CAR DOOR!!!
So it was appropriate really that I first discovered this album via its 3 track SAMPLER.
The door had opened and I went in,purchasing the whole album when I managed to locate a shop which actually stocked it.
Firmly pitched into the Classical Crossover market its really a reinvention of the artiste, who got the Art Of Noise out of her system and left it in the hands of others.
This collection of hymn and carol adaptions is quite Astleyan in places. And Anne had enough of a sense of humour to claim every one of them as her own work!!!

5 out of 5 stars Be careful.......2002-01-11

This is intoxicating. But I bought this version (1995 on Echo), only to find that a friend had a original from-the-manufacturer (1999) CD with 2 additional cuts. So, it was released with more music, and it was quality stuff too: Canzonetta and The Testimony of John are not included on the earlier version. I was disappointed to find that I received a diminished version. But, even reduced, this is alluring, gorgeous music that skillfully blends the 13the century with the 21st. The arrangements seem so simple, but get more and more complex with repeated listenings.

Just be sure you're getting the 1999 version, and you'll listen endlessly.

5 out of 5 stars MaSTERPIECE.......2000-06-27

A masterful recording. Anne Dudley has a great gift. She can create amazing classical and classically influenced pieces. They are mercurial and timeless pieces. This is a stellar work, a soundtrack for Life.

4 out of 5 stars A must have.......1999-12-29

I bought the album after listening to it in a local store. The first cut is supurb, and most of the rest of the album is very good as well. The album has a hypnotic spiritual quality (somewhat like Gorecki or Arvo part). Turn out the lights, lay back and be transported.

4 out of 5 stars ANJANI SACRED NAMES - SO SO.......2007-02-04

Should have guessed by the title, it is a bit too far on the worship-music side for my liking, kind of choir-like. Anjani's voice is always superb, no complaints ever about that, just that this is not her usual style and nowhere near jazz-like. Good for a kid's lullabye music cd.

1 out of 5 stars Unmoved.......2006-11-06

Monotonous and lack luster performances; the words and lyrics do not resonate with an authenticity. A total drag to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Putting on the garment of His Presence.......2005-01-30

Anjani Thomas contributes her lovely voice to Leonard Cohen's masterpiece Dear Heather, adding a touch of the sublime to songs like On That Day (They Wounded New York) and Nightingale. This uplifting album of her own songs is a work of devotion in praise of our Judeo-Christian God.

As such, it mirrors the work of the Psalmist. Anjani plays keyboards and guitar while bass and percussion round of the sound, which is mostly gentle and acoustic. The moving Kyrie Eleison is sung in Greek, whilst Yoshua is a blend of Hebrew and English and the gripping Ari Shemot contains Hebrew, Portuguese and English in a seemless blend of beauty.

The song Praise is an invocation of divine and angelic names like Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel and Michael, a gentle but powerful prayer. Another of my favourites is the comforting and reassuring Yeshurun and the exultant Blessing where her voice really soars on the most beautiful melody on the album. In style, this one in fact reminded me of the early work of folk legend Judy Collins.

The last two tracks are quite mystical and gnostic, YHVH being especially enchanting with awesome comforting and healing emanations. This song would be ideal for devotional activities like meditation and prayer. In this regard, interested listeners might want to investigate Jonathan Goldman's CD Holy Harmony: Healing Code Tuning Forks And Ancient YHSVH Chant.

Those who love Van Morrison in his more spiritual moments, or the classical work Tehillim (Psalms) by Steve Reich, will definitely love this graceful work of devotion. Amongst female artists, this spiritual undertone is also present in the work of vocalists like Emmylou Harris, Jennifer Warnes and Jane Siberry.

The CD case contains a glossary of Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Syriac (Aramaic) terms. The Sacred Names is a real find, and I thank Leonard Cohen who, by using Anjani's voice on his latest album, put me on her trail. Let all that breathe praise the Eternal.

5 out of 5 stars The Sacred Names.......2003-02-10

I am not a religious man. But I highly appreciate this CD.
All her songs are very comforting.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2001-10-28

Anjani takes a different approach on her sophomore release, The Sacred Names, produced with Leonard Cohen. Using her delicate harmonies and talent as a keyboardist, Anjani sings her praises to the Lord. But don't expect the usual Christian album here. Anjani continues to include her Hawaiian/Jazz/Folk influences, making The Sacred Names stand out from contemporary Christian releases.

    Amazon.com essential recording

Don't get too comfortable with this disc's opening minutes, which sound convincingly like a well-tuned consort of viols performing two short pieces by Machaut and Tye. These two works from the 14th and 16th centuries quickly give way to a piece from 1997 by David Lamb. Then come Arvo Part, Harry Partch, John Cage, and even Moondog, a.k.a. Louis Hardin. Additional instruments come and go- -harmonium, bagpipe, zhong ruan, nyckelharpa, drum--all of which complement and enhance the string sounds. Later, we hear music by Hildegard von Bingen, Perotin, and even Purcell. Most of the selections from early composers are arrangements by the Kronos Quartet and others, but it's a tribute to the recording's producers that in spite of the music's diversity, everything works together to make a coherent, cohesive, intellectually, and musically challenging program. --David Vernier

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of their best.......2005-04-14

If you like simple, string quartet music as much as I do, then you've got to listen to this. It is a generous 68 minutes of plaintive music--no discontinuities and surpises like on their Black Angels recording. It is all slow and mournful.

    4 out of 5 stars I loved this CD!.......2002-11-02

When I was listening to MSN I came across it. I love Early Music and they had a Radio station that was playing it. I decided to listen to it. So as I was lisitening to it I came across the song Collected Songs Where Every Verse Is Filled With Grief. That is the besty song I ever heard in a long time. I like the other songs but this one really spoke to me. It was quite moving if I might say.

4 out of 5 stars Not as early as you might think.......2000-06-07

Yes, there is "old" music on this disc. But works in olden style by John Cage, Arvo Part, et al are also present. Quite a challenging program on the listener - but rewarding as well. I am particularly found of Kronos' setting of Alfred Shnittke's "Collected Songs Where Every Verse is Filled With Grief". Very eclectic recording performed with usual finesse of the Kronos Quartet - and some guests.

    3 out of 5 stars Pleonastic.......2000-03-10

Kronos Quarter has been an agile and versatile instrument in the hands of modern composers. It has (re)interpreted music from many sources in a coherent way, thus creating a very distinctive sound. This album offers a mixed program of composers, juxtaposing the modern and the antique. The thesis of the album is (I think) that early composers are surprisingly palatable to modern sensibilities, and that they are close in spirit to a vast array of contemporary musicians. Also, it seems that the bond linking all these authors is a certain state of affliction; hence the subtitle of the album "lachrymae antiquae", ancient tears. Yet, overall, I found this a pretentious album, even in its use of latin. After so many years of philologically accurate renditions of the early masters, performed on period intruments, the operation of K.Q. sounds at least inappropriate if not even a bit obnoxious. It often seems that they are sacrificing the original intentions of the authors to the altar of this "modernity" thesis. The listener should judge by him/herself.

Summing up, I would just say that this is first of all a K.Q. album "inspired by" early music. I would just point out that it doesn't add much to the understanding neither of Machaut & co., nor of K.Q., which is still a great ensemble.

    4 out of 5 stars a good one.......1999-12-02

Who can say, as of now, how much of the music the KQ plays will fall, deservedly or not, by the wayside and how much of it will continue for the ages? At any rate, this CD is rewarding. I like the mix of quirky pieces with the staid, even if the title "Early Music" is misleading (since few original instruments are utilized in this record). Fine work; highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Nice sampling.......2006-08-06

I really enjoyed this collection of tracks from some of the top didgeridoo players in the world. There is a nice variety of styles and approachs to using the ancient instrument in modern and sometimes not so modern ways. I think in many ways, this CD would be an excellent introduction to the didgeridoo for those curious about it's use in contemporary music.

      5 out of 5 stars magical fusion.......2004-03-10

Drums, sax, flute, didgeriedo and others to make a mesmerising collection of world music. You won't find music like this on popular radio. Can't say enough about this great collection of music.

            Album Description

Peaceful, calming, soothing, prayerful, graceful, and centering are some words that describe the feelings of the listener of "Ancient Hymns for Modern Times". Chanted by soprano Katerina Sitaras Makiej, the hymns are selected from the worship services of the Orthodox Christian Church. This Church, established at Pentecost, (50 days after the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ,) has continued to express these hymns in its worship services throughout the centuries. They are as alive and as meaningful today as they were in the Early Church. However, the music is for everyone. It is universal. Our hearts are moved and our spirits are uplifted by the melodies.

In the 10th century, an emissary of Prince Vladimir of Kiev wrote to him upon experiencing the music and worship of the great church of St. Sophia in the Byzantine capitol of Constantinople, "We no longer know whether we were in Heaven or on earth, for such beauty we know not how to tell of it." The sound of Byzantine music is not adequately expressed in words. One must experience the peace and prayerfulness it brings to the soul in order to understand the elation of that emissary when he heard the music echoing throughout the domes of that great church. Within the musical structure of the Byzantine tones, the inner meanings of the hymns find a vehicle to penetrate our spirit traveling through our mind, centering our whole being, and revealing the faith.

"Ancient Hymns for Modern Times" offers a glimpse into the enduring and timeless music of Byzantium, chanted by Katerina Sitaras Makiej in English and in the original Greek.
