Disney's pioneering 1982 effort in computer animation has garnered a small but devoted cult audience, despite--or perhaps because of--its now-dated, rudimentary vid-game aesthetic. But while designers Jean Giraud and Syd Mead gave its visual design a certain streamline moderne panache, its musical score attempts a similar back-to-the-future fusion with somewhat more mixed results. Given the composer's often chilling, landmark synthesized score work a decade earlier on Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Wendy Carlos seemed like an apt choice for Tron. But without her previous collaborator's taste for Beethoven, Elgar, and Rossini, Carlos's instincts wend from atmospheric, 20th-century European modernism to cheesy '50s B-film melodramatics, with the sonic limitations of '80s synth technology sometimes a burden. Still, those fond of her solo work and collaboration with Kubrick on Orange (and The Shining) will find familiar charms in "Water, Music, and TRONaction," "TRONscherzo" and "Theme from TRON." But Journey's "Only Solutions" and now all-too-ironic "1990's Theme" further fix the score firmly in the '80s. This debut CD-release of the score also features three bonus tracks, the original "TRONaction" and two other unused cues, including a solo synth rendition of the film's anthem. --Jerry McCulley

Wendy Carlos - 'Tron' (Disney).......2007-06-26
I'm honestly not all that familiar with the extended catalog of electronic music pioneer Carlos has done outside of her 'Clockwork Orange' and 'Tales Of Heaven And Hell' releases (see my reviews of both), but I was sort of taken with 'Tron'. This is music 'from the future, with a vision'. Really dug the two cuts scored from Journey here, "Only Solutions" and "1990's Theme". 'Tron' may be considered by some to be a bit bizarre, but should be pretty enjoyable to most. Do check this soundtrack out when you can. You won't regret it.
If You Liked the Movie, You'll Love this Album.......2006-12-30
This was the only work of Wendy Carlos I've ever heard, and I thought it was great! For the time period the movie was made in, this music was amazing and ahead of it's time. Watching the movie and listening to the soundtrack go hand-in-hand--I don't think this soundtrack would stand too well on its own. However, for those who've seen Tron, every song will be exciting.
The blending of synth and orchestral music was very well done--so much so that I didn't ever notice it until listening to the soundtrack the first time in my iPod headphones. Every song has a unique blend of synth/live orchestra.
The only reason I gave the CD 4 stars instead of 5 is because it isn't one of those albums that you can listen to over and over again. Rather, listen one or two times, then put it on the shelf, then bring it out again at some later time. The Journey songs on the CD (and in the movie) were defintely not the band's best, so don't get the album just because you're a Journey fan. I'm glad Disney finally published this CD!
EXCELLENT!.......2004-07-15
Etant fan de "TRON", j'ai eu un trés grand plaisir a posséder la BOF de Wendy Carlos.La musique est tous simplement génial et un grand MERCI pour AMAZON.CA ,car sans eux, mon réve devenez impossible.
The sounds need the sights.......2004-07-02
While I felt the music of 'Tron' melded quite well with the film's action and scenes and set the right tone for the most part, the music by itself doesn't sound all that interesting to me. Ms. (formerly Mister) Carlos' work requires the movie's visual cues to help it really stand out. Without the visual element, the score is kinda droning, and rarely catches my attention while I'm listening to it and performing some other task-- like writing a new product review for example. It's almost like I'm not listening to anything at all. Not helping matters is the pair of sub-par Journey tunes. I guess Disney didn't wanna shell out the big bucks to get the rights to a few of their decent songs...
Bottom line: if ya wanna listen to this soundtrack, buy the Tron DVD (the 2-disc Special Edition of course, which can be found at www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005OCMR/qid=1088712198/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/002-6699831-0404821?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846) and listen to it while watching the movie. You'll get much more auditory enjoyment listening to the score in this manner, believe you me...
'Late
A fantastic soundtrack for a pioneer CGI movie.......2004-01-24
It took 9 years for Disney to release the original soundtrack for Tron. But the wait was all the more worthwhile. When I saw the movie way back in 82, I was entralled by its computer animation, but noticed the soundtrack was equally impressive. Like the movie itself, the music was a pioneer of its kind, with an emphasis on synthesizer composition, while there was a mix of orchestral music in the soundtrack. The electronic music is what makes it so special and it creates a truly cyberspace feel for the movie. It sounds not just futuristic, but the variations in the music generate different moods for the plot. I like most of the pieces in the soundtrack, but I think 'Theme from Tron' and the 'Love Theme' stand out, and the 'Anthem' is one of my favorites. Needless to say the synthesizer music throughout the soundtrack manages to stand the test of time, even though the 2 tracks by Journey do sound pretty dated by today's standard. But those 2 songs are still pretty good considering they are from 1982.
Wendy Carlos managed to create music that suits the movie to the T. The electronic music is full of harmony. I can listen to the soundtrack time and again and still not get tired of it, because it still sounds futuristic more than 20 years after it was composed. I recommend this soundtrack to all those who have seen the movie, as well as those who enjoy electronic music.

Album Description
Dead Mountain Mouth is the hotly anticipated full length follow-up to Genghis Tron's bold 2005 debut EP, Cloak Of Love. Recorded at Godcity Studios with Kurt Ballou (Converge), Dead Mountain Mouth moves beyond the rapid-fire electro/grind genre splicing of Cloak Of Love and forms something new, something more cohesive and fluid, an arcane union of digital dreams and brutal heaviness, where speedcore outbursts blossom from clouds of maximum beat-driven bliss and futuristic metalcore riffage seethes from your speakers. These ten gloriously dense, triumphantly catchy jams soar through vast valleys of immense crush and wonderfully alien vistas of 8-bit wizardry unlike anything you've heard before.

Faster than a humming bird's heart exploding.......2007-05-05
There's no band quite like Genghis Tron. seriously how many grindcore bands have samples and breakbeats? Brilliant. With a band as creative as Genghis Tron the sky is the limit.
Dead mountain mouth has some of the fastest heaviest stuff you'll hear. but it also has some really beautiful ambient parts that not only add to the eclectic sound of the album but really adds that extra push when they smash your skull after a quiet pretty interlude.
Seriously this album will rock your face off if you buy it. Genghis Tron deserves more credit than they get. One of the most innovative and talented bands I've heard in a long time. Buy this along with their EP Cloak Of Love, your mind will be blown.
The warlord's ghost in the machine.......2007-04-01
This is basically the sound of tuning an FM radio from inside a 1980s mainframe. A soundtrack to uploading Genghis Khan's consciousness to digital memory. The crazies in Genghis Tron spend equal time sounding like 65 Days of Static crossbred with Gregorian chant as they do thrashing the bejesus out of their guitars and vocal chords, Blood Brothers style, as if the end is truly near. Call them the Panic! At The Disco of grindcore.
Surprisingly, it's actually not too bad. The album's brevity should be praised, as anything in this vein much longer than thirty minutes or so runs the risk of biting the listener's ears right off. Length makes the record more palatable for replay value.
Considering that the vocals are as indecipherable as the next death metal band's, "Dead Mountain Mouth" is really an experiment in texture. Square wave wind chimes; too-perfectly-in-time, rabid-fire techno house drums; and digitally-created choral mirages play lieutenants to the raw meat guitars. If musical schizophrenia is your bag, you've arrived. Where, exactly, is another question. Simultaneously the past and the future?
Probably not, but it's an interesting listen nonetheless.
Wow...........2007-03-26
This album is just down-right scary. Delivering a massive blast of Converge-esque grind/noise and coloring it very cleverly with sampling make Genghis Tron's 'Dead Mountian Mouth' one of grindcore's most atmospheric and haunting releases to date. Neither element of this bands evil concoction takes anything away from the other, rather, both compliment each other very casually.
You would probably suspect such a diverse feat to sound hacked, and maybe cut-and-paste sounding. My friends, this is definately not another Horse the Band. The sampling is a far cry from being a mere gimmick. Genghis Tron achieve atmospheres like most grindcore bands are incapable of with the use of sampling, and not once in this entire album, does the sampling cut in pointlessly. The flow is never disrupted, and the atmosphere is constant and frightening. A perfectly demented, and clever creation.
Well blended electronica and grindcore = great experimental metal.......2006-08-13
When I first heard their debut, the Cloak of Love EP, I thought that Genghis Tron weren't much more than another grindcore band employing the gimmick of drastic leaps from intense attacks on your ears to silly, tongue-in-cheek disco music or similar styles. I'm quite glad that this did not scare me away from their first full length, Dead Mountain Mouth because I would have missed out on a solid album of experimental, electronica infused metal.
Employing screams that sound as painful to make as they are to listen to, vicious distorted guitars, and no small amount of keyboards, this trio intersperses bombastic, Converge-style assaults on your ears with interludes of dance beats that bring to mind futuristic weaponry being reloaded for yet another apocalyptic assault. Rather than being split up into songs, the album seems to ebb and flow between these two styles throughout most of it.
Dead Mountain Mouth sees the somewhat silly side of Genghis Tron's sound being toned down in favour of making somewhat more serious music (really, how seriously can you take grindcore?). This is one improvement over Cloak of Love, the other being the intricacy of their full length - there are parts of this album that bring to mind such diverse influences as Cynic, Isis and The Dillinger Escape Plan. At the same time as they are sampling from a huge music plate, Genghis Tron blends it all into a unique sound that they can call their own.
To conclude if you want to hear a album of grindcore/metal that is intense, progressive, unique and well-done, then Dead Mountain Mouth is the one for you. Also Yakuza's Samsara is worth checking out if you like this kind of music.
jesus christ.......2006-06-27
i'm not even sure what to say about this album that hasn't been said. this is one of the most ecclectic, intense, aggressive, soothing, catchy, melodic, retardedly heavy, and dancable albums i've ever heard. actually i'm pretty sure it's the only album i've ever heard to which all of those adjectives even apply. it's also excellent, easily album-of-the-year material. if you've ever thought that maybe, just maybe, playing pig destroyer's and boards of canada's entire discographies simultaneously might not be a bad idea, buy this immediately. actually, f-ck that, if you in any way enjoy intelligent grind, metal, or mellowed-out ambient brain jams, preferably all three, buy this immediately.

Promising.......2006-05-07
As you've probably heard, Genghis Tron combine 80's pop with slightly technical grindcore -- tons of programming (some of it absolutely awesome), screams, and pop keyboards. To actually listen to it, though, is to seemingly listen to a remix of two completely different bands' songs that someone cut parts out of to make one song for this band. In other words, the pop going into the grindcore often feels awkward and forced, though I doubt that was Genghis Tron's intention; rather, I think -- as this is a debut -- they just hadn't completely found the balance between their influences until about the end of the album, when their promise really shines through.
They have a full length coming soon, and all rumors suggest that it will be about a hundred times better than this, but I still must reccomend this with saying there are no bad songs on it, and fans of music that is a bit more eccentric should probably pick this up right away.
Grindcore + 80s electro? .......2006-01-30
Sounds like a bit of a joke doesn't it? A bit of a gimmick. I wondor who's idea in the band it was to mix melodic electro/space-rock with extreme metal and melodic shredding but whoever it was I applaud them. Not only is this a hybrid of different styles, its also a hybrid of two different approaches to songwriting - making serious and melodic music and making fun, catchy and quirky music. Cloak Of Love really is a great little EP. Its only 12 minutes long, but those 12 minutes are so good you'll find yourself listening to it two or three times in a row. If you want something a little different that doesn't sound like its trying too hard to be different, I suggest picking it up.
Synth-pop grindcore? Hell yeah!.......2005-12-19
I heard about this record through the proverbial grapevine. While driving two hours to see Converge, I asked my friend if he had this on his iPod (which was hooked up to the car stereo), since he has a lot of good indie/metal/hardcore stuff on his computer and iPod. He put it on, and for about the time taken to cover 20 miles of I-71, I experienced sonic euphoria. OK, enough hyperbole. With their juxtaposition of electronic music and brutal grindcore, Genghis Tron have created something that eclipses the chaos one expects from behemoths like the Dillinger Escape Plan, the Locust, Pig Destroyer. I read an interview with one bandmember where he pnpointed the vastly different tastes of each member: he likes metal (Botch, Burzum, Brutal Truth, Converge, Cryptopsy, Immortal), another was an electronica DJ (Autechre, Spahex Twin) while the third liked his indie rock (Drive Like Jehu etc.). It is hard to believe that people with such varied tastes could find something in common to come together and record music, but like in this case, when they do, the product is amazing. Go buy this EP, and wait for the full length (which, at the time of writing this review, the band have begun work on).
Serious Potential, but Missed the Mark.......2005-11-16
With their extended techno wankery, Genghis Tron does show to be a bit more than your average spazzcore band, though that aspect seems to be their downfall. 'Cloak of Love's' major flaw is the irritating electronic breaks punctuating what is in all honesty some of the best electrogrind since 'Plauge Soundscapes'. Nixing the boring disco parts, the music is speedy and full of groove, actually paying attention to riff stylings and ingoring the cliched buzzsaw riffs that seem to be abundant in the better part of boring grindcore nowadays (see the wholly overrated Assuck). All of the songs are abound with cool vocal work, above average for the genre (Polysics anyone?). Nevertheless, without the pointless enlongated disco electro passages 'Cloak of Love' really could have been a winner, though I seriously look forward to their successive albums, hopefully putting the techno tomfoolery to a minimum.
6 / 10
Dance party grindcore.......2005-09-23
Probably the most original band I have ever heard. They mix As the Sun Sets style grind with a drum machine and synth pop. Sounds like the two don't mix right? Well this NY band makes it work like something fierce. Only complaint is that I need a full length from them right now!
Recomended for fans of An Albatross, The Number 12 Looks Like You

The damage that Weezer has wrought. .......2006-03-03
If sweater-vests could rock out, they'd sound like Ozma. "Spending Time ..." may remind you of Scooter lookalikes furiously banging their heads and giving devil horns.
Ozma got their big break by opening for Weezer. Both share the annoying capacity for blending guitars with cheesy 80's synths. The perfect example is the title track, which could've been used in a promo for "Joanie Loves Chachi."
Another similar trait is irritating, whiny vocals with no range. On "Eponine", and other tracks, there's a definite Queen influence, especially in the bombastic guitars. But the singing is so wimpy and lifeless, it'll make you appreciate how unique Freddie Mercury was.
Ozma are so bland, sorting out socks might seem more exciting. Or sweater-vests.
Pinkerton-esque.......2004-12-03
Let me begin by saying that this review was written after Ozma's 2004 breakup. This was, to say the least, quite a heartbreak. And since there's been plenty of apt time to reflect upon Ozma's debut and sophomore albums [yes, the ones that sound like Weezer], I can now undoubtedly say that "Spending Time On The Borderline" is Ozma at its best. To put it plainly...a masterpiece. Admittedly, when I first picked this album up and popped it into my CD player, I was NOT impressed. Ozma could have broke up at that very moment and my response would have been, "Who cares...they're no good anymore." But as albums do have a tendency to grow on you, I decided to give this one a try. After all, what did I have to lose? Slowly and steadily certain tracks started to pop out at me..."Hey, 'Come Home Andrea' is one catchy song!" And, "Whoa, this Japanese song sure is poppy!" Then there are the deeper songs on the album, like "Eponine", "Bad Dogs", and "Game Over". They take a bit longer to love, but the wait is certainly worth it. To sum it all up, there's not a single track on this album that I wouldn't want to listen to, anywhere, anytime. Despite the mysterious tension that corrupted Brummel and Slegr, I, for one, know that they went out [no pun intended] on a good note with "Spending Time On The Borderline". Another "Pinkerton"? Perhaps. But only time will tell...
*Ryan and José have started up a new band labeled "Yes Dear". Hopefully they can continue their largely unpublicized legacy. Check them out at myspace.com/yesdear
A disappointment.......2004-11-05
I bought this album because I heard that Ozma was similar to Rooney and Weezer (bands I think are good). Ozma sure does have some similarities in this album (though they're probably more comparable to a Christian band like Reliant K), but that doesn't make the album any good. The whole album is very boring. There's just nothing special to it. I recommend that you pass on this.
Great Guitar Pop.......2004-10-16
I think that Ozma is consistently one of the more "interesting" bands to come along. I do hear the Weezer influence, but at the same time it is filtered through a lot of other bands (Queen anyone?) as well as a lot of originality. The two part vocal melodies, instrumentation, tones, etc. are fully realized on this "studio" album. I like the whole Ozma catalog, but the production on this disc kicks all the other ones in the rear. As a guitarist, I have to hand it to Ryen. This is consistently one of the better riff orientated guitar albums that I have heard in a long time. He can also shred like a beast, but all his guitar lines support the song melodically and rhythmically. You can't ask for more from a guitarist. All the guitar is there for a reason. This is playing that I aspire to. It reminds me a lot of Brian May.
As for the songs, "Your Name" is one of the most orginal ballads I have heard in a while. I love "Bad Dogs" even though most don't. The lead on that song is exceptional.
Experimental yet excellent..........2004-02-29
Ozma definitely shows some maturity musically with this album. I did a review of this CD for my school newspaper (over 1500 studnents/staff/parents read the newspaper), so hopefully I can get the word out about Ozma to some people.
1. Spending Time - the band experiments with some guitar textures and spiffy synth lines. May take a few listens to get used to. 7/10
2. Your Name - good vocals, perfect melody. 8.5/10
3. Come Home Andrea - a vaguely Celtic, alt-country tune that even people who hate country will like. One of the best tracks on the album. 9/10
4. Bad Dogs - marching band percussion leads into a hard rockin' song. 8.5/10
5. Utsukushii Shibuya - great bass line, nice flute and strings. 9.5/10
6. Turtleneck - probably the worst track. nice metaphorical lyrics though. 6.5/10
7. Game Over - catchiest track. my personal favorite. - 10/10
8. Curve In The Old 1-9 - elaborate and brilliant, both lyrically and musically. - 9/10
9. Restart - another GREAT track. such a perfect melody. - 9.5/10
10. Eponine - fun to sing along to. very catchy. - 9/10
11. Wake Up - nice vocals from Rachel Haden (Jimmy Eat World, Nada Surf, Weezer). 8.5/10
12. Light Years Will Burn - not my favorite. still pretty good though. 7.5/10
Overall: 8.5/10
Definitely awesome.

Finally and Fulfilling!.......2005-10-28
Believe the hype, _Shining_ fans. These bits and pieces of music - volume 1 focuses more on "studio music and textures" of the themes devised for the film while volume 2 spends its allotted tracks on the more fully developed orchestra tracks - hold just about everything. I'll encourage you to follow that impulse/interest and add this work to your collection.
What do you get? Well, for me, the treat was volume 2's first track - the film's title track - Ms Carlos explains why Kubrick nixed it - but it is as haunting as the final draft that follows Jack Torrance's lil yellow bug to The Overlook climbing the Rockies. The other tracks are renderings and attempts to put the novel into music forms. The liner notes are great - like a listening session over coffee with the composer.
Both volumes are must haves for those of us all agog over the film's score (and scoring possibilities) but if you just want to hold a haunting, get volume 2 and put track one on repeat until you, that hag hottie in the tub, or your six year old's index finger hollers, "redrum!"
Settling Old Scores.......2005-10-10
This second volume of Wendy's lost film soundtracks concentrates more on her full orchestral scores. Although she achieved fame as a synthesist, one reason she succeeded so well is her knowledge of and attention to timbral colors and the placement of different voices -- in short, orchestration. It should come as little surprise therefore that when writing for a full orchestra she's fully accomplished and impressively skilled.
Synthesizer cues are also included, from early (1981) novelty demonstrations for Dolby Labs to later (1998) soundtrack work utilizing her state-of-the-art digital synthesizers.
As usual for her, voluminous liner notes detail not only the working methods behind each of the pieces, but also glimpses into the politics and disappointments that delayed the release of these tracks. How many composers could survive having a significant portion of their career locked away in a vault for 25 years?

'bout it.......2004-03-05
DJ Tron put out the hardest tracks, hands down. Best expierienced in high volume.
I want to see a rainbow high in the sky..........2003-11-11
If you ever want to scare the pants off your friends just load this CD up in a car with some 15s and let "I'm Going to Hell" pummel them into submission. The second the bass kicks in on full they won't know what hit them. "Cerebral Bore" is also a first-rate Terrorcore track, and will surely frighten away all the little girls that think Rotterdam is the Mecca of Hardcore and weren't sent packing with the end of "I'm Going to Hell". Great CD.
HARDCORE TERROR.......2002-01-17
I never knew HELL could sound so beautiful. Sheer hardcore terror and pain, pain, pain. TRON is god here. HARDCORE WILL NEVER DIE!!! "I was only 21 when i died....."
BEST PARTY CD EVER!!!!!!.......2000-08-22
Now this is what I call hardcore rave. The music is fantastic and if you love dancing your gonna love this cd. This cd has everything you need to start a party: good bass, good sounds, and good movement to the music. If you buy the cd you will most defiantly not regret it. The first time I heard rave I liked it, I thought it was pretty cool. But, when my friend told me about DJ Tron I thought, oh, just another guy playing the same type of music as the others. I was wrong, this dj is a lot better for you to get into the party mood. I love the music a lot, and I hope you enjoy it yourself if you plan on buying it. I'll tell you this right now, your gonna love it. Take care, and enjoy!
