Raphael (no last name) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised by Benedictine nuns. Under their tutelage and encouragement, he developed a love for music, first learning about classical music and Gregorian chant. As a young man, after playing gypsy violin on the streets and utilizing his talents in rock bands, Raphael studied the piano formally at the San Francisco Conservatory. He later spent a decade at Esalen, the renowned Northern California spiritual community. It was during his time there that he began to blend his various influences, draw from multiple cultures for compositional inspiration, and forge his signature style of healing and relaxation music. Originally issued in 1989, Music To Disappear In was his first recording for the label Hearts of Space. A bit dated by this juncture, these nine songs, all original compositions but for the traditional opener ("Disappearing Into You"), use piano and keyboards as a central voice, creating a lulling web of atmospheric string sounds complemented by flute and percussion. Long used by body workers, Music To Disappear In is the very definition of New Age relaxation music. --Paige La Grone

If you don't want to be relaxed don't listen to this CD! It's a wonderful prescription for the spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully relaxing.......2004-11-30

I have been having insomnia for a few weeks, and this disk, specially track 2 "In Paradiso" is awesome. I programmed my CD . player to just play it over and over, it is so relaxing I actually sleep, in spite of all kinds of problems (try sleeping with a stuffed nose in a sitting position!) It was so bad I wore it off (hard to believe, isn't it?). I will buy the album again, just for that song!

5 out of 5 stars Music of my soul........2002-11-18

This CD is the most awsome musical source I've ever known. I am a pianist and guitarist and have tried to reach this plateau myself and not come so close. The music in it actually touched emotions I didn't know I had. I fealt a peace and tranquility I've never known. When my time comes, this is the music I want to leave this world hearing. Side 1 Track 1, Disappearng into You, is the song of my soul and life. I don't know if the artist has known pain or sorrow like I have but the connection is unreal and welcome. This is a good investment and well worth the time to enjoy. Turn down the lights, light a fire, cuddle up with the one you love and let this artist touch your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2002-11-04

I heard this album when it first came out and it still thrills me. It's just plain BEAUTIFUL, relaxing music. Lay down on the floor, spread your arms wide and drift away..... it truly IS music to disappear in.........

3 out of 5 stars Can't seem to disappear.......2000-05-25

I can't imagine meditating or getting a message to this music. It is very heavy on the angelic chorus and shrill strings. Then fluxuates to a Mr. Rogers sounding theme. It sounds very dated and the tracks do not flow well into one another.

Music To Disappear In II, released in 1991, is just shy of an hour long and is a logical extension of pianist-composer Raphael's Music To Disappear In. Once again utilizing the piano and keyboards as a central voice on these songs, with the addition of real rather than synthesized violin and harp, as well as a light hand with production, makes for a warmer and more enjoyable recording than its predecessor. Flutes, tabla, drums, and tinkling percussion add texture, harmony, and at times, twin melodies. A greater variance of composition and arrangement is evidenced by songs such as the sensual "Healing Dance," which opens with the strains of gypsy violin and grows to include a snake-hipped percussive rhythm, and by the hauntingly primordial vocals of "Laxshmi." "Tantra" is underscored by didjeridoo, and "Surrender" (a clear foundation for what is to come with his subsequent recording Angels of the Deep) is an angelic aria featuring harp and flute alongside Raphael's deftly fingered midsong piano solo. --Paige La Grone

I've never been disappointed with his music. It's the most peaceful company I've ever had!

5 out of 5 stars Rexax and renew.......2005-08-15

This music is great for relaxation and renewal. It is a beautiful synthesis of eastern/western music and although some may classify it as "new age" music, it is much more than that. Use it as a background for entertainment or while reading a good book. It is also great for meditation. Let yourself sit back and travel to other dimensions if you like using this music for a springboard.

I use this music frequently during massage sessions with new clients. Several clients now specify this beautiful composition for their sessions. The melodies are very complex yet appear simple; my clients simply get lost in the music and escape stress for a time.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, quiet, peaceful music.......2001-02-13

This recording is the perfect mix of both unobtrusive and compelling sound. So often, meditative music intended for background, mood-softening purposes winds up rather empty and weak. This instead draws you gently and willingly into a symphony of sound. Beautiful, beautiful music.... give it a try and I know you'll love it!

4 out of 5 stars Reminds me of Eno's unusual early ambient experiments.......2006-01-06

I wasn't sure what to expect with this album. Recorded by TSOTL former member Björn Olsson, "Instrumentalmusik" reminds me of the instrumental work on Eno's best albums "Another Green World" and "Before & After Science". There are rich, lovely unusually supple melodies that decorate this CD like icing on a very rich cake. That's only the surface though as the performances and mood of the album quickly pull you in. This is ambient music as Eno intended to be initially--it's memorable background music that will seduce you without your realizing it.

I'm glad I purchased this (although it took amazon.com over a month to get it to me for some reason. It was ordered as a Christmas gift at the beginning of December but was well worth the wait). I would strongly recommend this album with its walk down the music isle there's a variety of different eras and genres woven into the compositions on display here.

5 out of 5 stars Divine Ambience.......2004-03-10

This is a fantastic albumn. It's definitely something that you don't hear everyday. It is perfect for many occasions, anything from subtle background music to complete submergence whilst shutting out the rest of the world. It's production and tones are very reminescent of mid to late 60's psychedelic rock but not over-the-top to the point of being a pretentious throwback. While having said that, I don't think that any other production or tone could have been better. A great albumn from up north with a complete lack of focus on image, the way music should be listened to.

5 out of 5 stars textures for daydreams.......2000-05-01

What an odd creation for the 21st century, where electronica and hip-hop dominate the musical production. Olsson's album stands out as really unusual ambient music. This music falls somewhere between early electroacoustic music, psychaedelic rock, and music for films. As another reviewer has mentionned, the drum lines bring to mind Morricone's music for Leone's spaghetti westerns. This album is very mellow and dreamy. The sound is rich and thick. it's the kind of album where on first listens it seems as though all the songs sound the same, but then with each new listen, the identity of each song begins to emerge, without breaking the sonic unity of the album. Perfect for a rainy sunday morning or an evening of staring at stars and shadows.

4 out of 5 stars Like straight out of a fairy tale..........2000-02-06

Sounds as if it were recorded in Oz, Never Never Land, or some distant planet...spooky mood music that drifts like a lullaby. Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Reverberant.......1999-12-18

This is truly achieving music. Just as Erik Satie's Gymnopedies or Air's instrumental compositions reflect the clean lines of brief, composed, arranged pieces, Olsson's music benefits from his concentration on the heart of the matter, the importance of meaningfully melodic expression. Rough comparisons might include spaghetti western soundtracks, particularly in consideration of the powerfully simple lines drawn by Olsson's guitar playing, creaky organ, and rumbling kettle drums; yet the approach to the music is much less defined, maintaining a deft discipline within a larger context that recalls classic krautrock, its looping, droning character both full of life and detached, organic and electronic, permanent and fleeting. Too purely poetic for new age or pop or rock, and too developed for improvisatory exploration or simple folk, Instrumental Music seems to encompass them all, reflecting its recorded moment (and apparently, fittingly, it was a long moment on a Scandinavian shore, mostly at night) in aptly titled pieces like The Vision Unfolds Its Landscape. The hills roll, the waves break. Truly stunning, self-contained, a work in and of itself.

Album Description

'How to Disappear' is the debut effort from Lauri Kranz. It is an intimate album with moments both fragile (Not Another Girl) and vitriolic (Lucky One), mixing narcotic vocals withlayers of electric guitars, vintage keyboards, upright bass and drums - all together to create a sound which is both unique and comfortable, languid and edgy. All of these elements are showcased in the first single, 'Adam One Afternoon'.

Haven't listened to anything else for days ... I've been pressing it on my friends, we all agree - this record is a beautiful thing.

The most special thing about this record is not the beautiful voice, which is totally hypnotic, but the honesty in the lyrics. It's very rare to find music this good, this open, but that doesn't sound like a completely self indulgant therapy session. A great new talent.

5 out of 5 stars A FUN BALLET WITH QUITE A HISTORY!.......2000-01-30

It can be said that La Sylphide (Sylfiden as the Danes call it, was premiered by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1836), composed by Herman Severin Lovenskiold and choreographed by Bournonville, is the earliest piece of ballet music from the Romantic period that has been recorded. However, an ealier version of the same ballet by a different composer (Schneitzhoeffer)--no recordings--and choreographer has been revived by the Paris Ballet (Who knows how faithful it is to the original!). La Sylphide is a story about a female spirit, called the Sylphide, who falls in love with a young man; he too falls in love with her. But the little courtship is to be cut short by a witch. The fairy tale ends with the death of the Sylphide. The star ballerina of the first version of La Sylphide was Marie Taglioni, who was forever associated with the beginning of the Romantic ballet. Now we come to the version recorded on this CD. First, a little history. After the Danish choreographer, August Bournonville, saw Marie Taglioni dance in the role of the Sylphide at the Paris Opera, he wanted to stage his own production of the ballet. But first, he had to purchase the rights for using the score (by Schneitzhoeffer), but to his disappointment, it was too expensive. Consequently, he decided to have entirely new music written. And the man to accomplish this was Lovenskiold. So successful was this second version that the complete Bournonville choreography along with Lovenskiold's score are still used today by the Royal Danish Ballet. This is a superb "complete" performance by the Danish Radio Sinfoniette. The sound is clear and rich! Damgaard who has been the chief conductor at the Royal Danish Theatre since 1990 conducts beautifully. Under his baton, the orchestra makes the music sound alive and poignant. For those who are interested in ballets or just a great fairy tale, I highly recommend they get this CD. The only alternative recording is the one on Chandos, performed by the Royal Danish Orchestra (conducted by Garforth). It is also excellently performed (Read my review for that recording!). That CD contains an extra number (a pas de deux, which is not ever played as part of the complete ballet), which is a delight to hear! The CPO version, however, contains James' Act 1 solo, which is not in the Chandos recording. If you're a completist, get both!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of Lovenskiold 's Ballet.......1999-10-26

It is a beatiful recording of the first romantic ballet, who has a precursor on Taglioni's Sylphide (which can be appreciate on video recording by Ghislene Thesmar interpretation with the corps of Opera Paris Ballet, music by Scheneihoffer, available at amazon.com). The perfomance of Lovenskiold partiture by the Danish Radio Simfonieta conducted by Daamgaardt is perfect, without affectation and it reach the maximum climax on second act. I bought this record because I listen on the radio the overture and the introduction of the first act, which inmediately decided me to find out and bought this version. There is only a criticism to the booknote which is included on the CD. Taglioni 's Sylphide has been succesfull performed in our century, on the seventies by a reconstruction taken on by Pierre Lacotte and interpreted by Ghislaine Thesmar. Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires offer this version on 1974 on stage and it was suscefull received at Argentine and many great Argentine Ballerinas interpreted the beautiful role of the light Sylphide.
