There's a commercial inevitability to holiday song collections that can tempt music fans to mutter "humbug" under their breath. Yet while this collection (released in conjunction with the Tenors' Christmas Spectacular tour of 2003) is no less market savvy, in the end the trio's earnest, energetic performances earn their fair shair of respect. The trio's Celtic shadings impart considerable warmth to "Fairytale of New York" and other performances, but it's the range of influences they (also in solo and duet turns, all solidly backed by the Czech National Chamber Orchestra) bring to bear elsewhere that adds compelling new dimensions to these holiday favorites. Anthony Kearns' "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" may be solidly traditional, but Ronan Tynan imparts "I'll Be Home For Christmas" with some deft, jazzy drama while Finbar Wright gives "Mary's Boy Child" an unexpected Carribean spin. Elsewhere, the folk-classical influences behind "We Three Kings," "O Holy Night," and the gospel traditional "How Great Thou Art" span renaissance, baroque, and modern with a grace missing from the on-the-sleeve sentiments of the closing duo of patriotic warhorses--what would the Prince of Peace make of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," anyway? --Jerry McCulley

We Three Kings.......2007-01-16
The 3 Irish Tenors are a joy to listen to in the Christmas season. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it.
3 Tenors Christmas.......2007-01-12
This was VERY disappointing - too noisy & just the wrong type of music for these guys. I played it once & will try to get someone to take it off my hands - I love listening the them, usually, but this album is just a dud.
Beautiful and Amazing.......2004-12-18
When I fist listened to the clips from this CD on Amazon I wondered why on earth they put the patriotic songs at the end, and also wondered a little at the other non christmas songs. After listening to it several times however I realized why. They don't leave Jesus in the manger, but take him all the way up to today! Wow. To me that is totally amazing. There arn't many christmas CD's that do that, but I think it really balances things out. I really enjoyed the Drummer Boy, and all of the rest of the songs. I would definantly say that this was a good buy.
These Three Kings Rule!.......2004-04-24
This recording is a wonderful addition to any Christmas collection. It has power, charm and just enough reverence! Anthony Kearn's "Lord's Prayer" is magnificent! Finbar Wright's "How Great Thou Art" is awe-inspiring! After four years with the "Irish Tenors" poor Mr. Wright still must endure the ignorance of a few "fans", being constantly compared to John McDermott. Finbar took the "Irish Tenors" to a new level, as acknowledged by both Kearns and Tynan. I wonder how long "Ringo" had to endure being compared to Peter Best? Get over it people!
Another Winner.......2003-12-22
In their second Christmas album, the three Irish tenors have another very lovely collection of Christmas favorites and a few not so well known. The duets are particularly beautiful and, while I, like other reviewers, would have preferred an all-Christmas album, the American anthems are stirring and well done. My only caveat is the absence of John McDermott, whom I miss. His voice added something less homogenized to the mix and although Finbar Wright has a more operatic tenor voice, I would prefer McDermott if I had my druthers. Nonetheless, this a a grand Christmas album and I recommend it enthusiastically.

A Christmas Collection That Is Just Plain Fun.......2005-11-19
Sometimes I think the only person who is happy that Public television is financially challenged, other that certain legislators who believe that it is too liberal and the culmination of all that is evil, is Andre Rieu. Now don't get me wrong, this happy Dutch musician who models himself after Johan Straus is not a cruel or vindictive person. At least from what I can tell he's not, but let's face it. If PBS did not have financial woes, Andre Rieu, one of its favorite stars, would not have received the exposure he has, and his sales in the United States would probably be next to nothing. Of course for anyone who has ever seen one of his extravaganzas, we would be missing something enjoyable. He's musically sound and he knows how to entertain, and quiet frankly, though some classical purists may cringe at his name, I don't believe the composers whose music he uses are rolling in their graves because it's become popular once again.
Of all his concerts and CDs, I enjoy THE CHRISTMAS I LOVE the most. The jitterbug version of "Jingle Bells" shows that an old tune can produce new tricks. His arrangement of "The Holy City" (a.k.a. "Jerusalem") is almost as moving as when it is performed with a vocalist. The recording has a number of medleys that include favorites from all over Europe show how Christmas has such an international flair. For me, however, this album provides true variety. Many of the carols are not familiar to Americans, so we hear something different yet also authentic to the holiday season.
I'm surprised that there have not been other Rieu Christmas discs. He's an original musician and a consummate showman, so I'm sure there's more he could do with holiday music, but maybe he knows he has a classic with this collection and it will stand the test of time.
Wonderful; marvellous.......2000-09-30
Andre Rieu proves again he is the best of the best! I bought this CD in october 1997, a few weeks before Andre's concert In Quebec city. In this CD, you'll find all the classics of Christmas. They are well played because Andre and his orchestra know how to bring us the atmosphere of Christmas. The desing of the CD is well done. If you,re looking for good music, please try this CD You'll enjoy it. If you have the occasion to see his Christmas concert on TV, watch it. It's very beautiful.
This his not the first CD made by Andre. In 1992, he released "Spielt Die Schonten Weihnachtslieder".
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.......1999-08-18
Another wonderful Andre Rieu CD. All the Rieu recordings and videos are a breath of fresh air - a joy to the soul.

Customer Reviews:
Drum Prayer is out of this world !.......2002-12-26
Wow ! This new release from Steve Gordon is really exceptional. I got it as a gift for the holidays and it just blew my mind. The orchestration and exotic insturments are amazing and the blend of vocals with chants from around the world really creates a trencendent sound. I've been blissed out for the past several hours and can't stop playing it. Spectacular and highly recommended !
Drum Prayer made me feel an akin-ship to the whole world........2002-11-13
I've never written a review before, but when I heard this album, I felt compelled to write my feelings down of what it invoked and share them with someone. I've hardly listened to much native sounding music, but this album is much more contemporary and it reached a place in me I didn't know I had. I just sat there and rocked with the rhythms. Drum Prayer made me feel an akin-ship to the whole of the world. I didn't know what the words meant when listening the first couple of times, I just got into the instrumentation and vocals., They were so joyful, so soothing and visionary that I was compelled to at last read the liner notes. The Sanskrit, Tibetan and Lakota chants added to the native drums, flute and guitar are so well woven together, I can't imagine how it could have been done any better. I have played this album countless times already and enjoy it every time. My favorite track is `Holding the Vision'. I highly recommend this album.
Drum Prayer is entrancing.......2002-11-05
I find this new release by Steve Gordon to be exquisite and perfect for massage, yoga, tantra and ecstatic dance. The blending of diverse instruments and sacred devotional chants are absolutely entrancing, making it exceptionally easy to slip deeply into an exhalted state of bliss. The vocals are particularly beautiful. I have really been a fan of Steve's previous work with both his brother David and Deborah Martin, and with the release of Drum Prayer I feel that he's really outdone himself. I absolutely love it.
Drum Prayer Gets High Praises.......2002-10-23
This new solo project release from Steve Gordon is exceptional. A real groundbreaking piece of work for the genre, combining a variety of nature sounds and indigenous instruments from around the world, with chants for world peace from several different cultures including Lakota, Sanskrit and Tibetian. This recording melds all of these apparently diverse cultural aspects and sounds together into a delightfully inspiring and unified mix of ancient shamanic rhythms and contemporary world-beat music. Gordon has assembled a virtual host of top artists for this release, including brother David on piano, vocalists Jaya Lakshmi (Lost at Last), Lakshami Devi and Laurie Lovecraft as well as percussionists Girish Gambhira and Kim Atkinson and the amazing Sarod playing of Wynne Paris, with Digeridoo provided by Peter Van Gorder and additional electric guitar and synthesizer tracks from Spotted Peccary Music's Howard Givens. Drum Payer is brilliantly uplifting while still remaining entrancingly relaxing allowing the listener to explore uncharted expanses of this new and vivid sonic realm. The vocals are sensational and incredibly serene. The CD has been playing in the background of my home office for the past several days and each new listen reveals something new and deeper in the mix. Truly an extraordinary work deserving of the highest praise. Drum Prayer is an absolute winner !
DRUM PRAYER - STEVE GORDON.......2002-10-14
"As a nature enthusiast, I enjoy relaxing outside, reading a good book and listening to "earthy" music that gives me inner peace. That music is DRUM PRAYER by Steve Gordon. This title is a blend of contemporary world beats and ancient sounds with a flavor of sacred chants. I love the jazz/spanish guitar, feathery flutes, native drums and the ambient dance grooves. This is a winner...a 5 Star!!!" Jeananne/Fullerton, CA

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Customer Reviews:
A little too much and poor sound quality.......2006-11-10
Even though this was recorded just a couple of years ago the sound quality is not that good. It sounds like it was recorded in the 70s and outside with the microphones far away. There is nothing too deep here and all the fanfares are fairly short, just lasting a few seconds it seems. I got tired of this pretty quickly and it doesn't stand up to repeated listenings and to be honest a lot of the stuff on here sounds the same. The performances are ok, but nothing special, they sound kind of flat, and they don't really do anything to make this sound exciting like it should. Maybe if the performance and sound was better I would of enjoyed this more.
And now, honored ladies and gentlemen, may we present...!.......2003-07-17
This is what you'd have to call a specialty CD. It consists entirely of fanfares--nothing but fanfares--some of them as short as 10 seconds long. An interesting idea for a CD, perhaps, but I would guess it is primarily for directors of costume dramas, period pieces, and ceremonies of various sorts.
There are 76 fanfares on the disc covering composers ranging from Monteverdi to a trio of modern composers, all of the latter associated with the CD itself. They are played by an outfit called 'The Art of the Trumpet,' a coalescence of 24 Austrian trumpeters and a couple of timpanists (and on occasion a single trombone). Some of the fanfares use the whole group, there are others for solo trumpet, and for all combinations in between. They are led by a trumpeter from Vienna named Leonhard Leeb who is not only one of the trumpeters but also one of the composers--the other two modern composers are Leon Bolten and Joel Modart (I almost typed 'Mozart' but no!...).
Other composers include Salieri, Lully, Biber, J.H. Schmelzer, Pezel (often spelled Petzel here in America), Philidor (yes, the chess master of that name), Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and the multi-talented A. Nony Mous.
The performances are appropriately stirring, ceremonial, attention-grabbing, even mournful (one, Bolten's 'Wrapped in Mystery,' was dedicated to the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11, 2001). I would strongly suggest you not listen to the whole CD at one sitting--actually, it's hard to imagine anyone would--because too much B flat can fry your brain unless you yourself are a brass player or bagpiper.
For what it is, though, this CD is excellent.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-01-03
Henry Purcell became under the influence of John Blow's compositional style while they were both employed at Westminster Abbey. Purcell was an assistant to the royal instrument keeper while Blow was the organist. Later on Purcell became the organist succeeding Blow and in l6 years had established himself as the greatest English composer of the age. At his untimely death Blow returned as the organist at the Abbey. This CD includes the following songs by Purcell: 6 duets: "Sound the trumpet"; "In Vain the am'rous flute"; "Sing, sing ye druids";"O dive custos...";"No resistance is but vain";and "Hark how the songsters". Also 2 solos:"O solitude my sweetest choice" (Bowman); "Incassum,Lesbia rogas" (Chance). Two duets by Blow:"Ah, Heav'n! What is't I hear?" and the absolute high point of the disc :"Ode on the death of Mr. Henry Purcell". The voices of Chance and Bowman are a perfect blend and each song is rendered just to perfection!!! I personally prefer the performance of Michael Chance because of the unique quality of his vocal sound and his sensitivity to the demands of each selection. His one solo on the disc is truly a thing of beauty. It's all very enjoyable and is a nice variety of tunes.
EXCELENCIA MUSICAL.......2005-09-08
EL CD CUENTA CON UNA RECOPILACION MUY EQUILIBRADA Y DE LA MAS ALTA CALIDAD
One of the best CDs around.......2000-01-10
Two exceptional countertenors -- Bowman's voice has always been most successful in the higher range and it has a strength that many more fluttery ones don't. Michael Chance is the most secure of the countertenors I've heard and the most overall musical.
The John Blow number "Ode to ... Purcell" is, alone, worth the entire LP. A beautifully crafted piece that more people should hear.
Since so much of the other material is also prime, this is a Don't Miss, as far as I'm concerned.
Delightful, a must-have........1999-06-01
With all the hype about the new North American countertenors, fans of that voice shouldn't overlook this now-venerable gem. James Bowman and Michael Chance are in superb voice in this wonderful array of duets, and the sum of their two voices is even greater than the two constituent parts. The choice of music is gorgeous, the tempi are fast and ebullient, and the CD is altogether delightful.

One Song Missing "Pine Cones-Wish you a Merry Christmas".......2006-12-29
I love this album by Katherine K. Davis! However, there is one song, a medley, missing that was on the album we had in 1966-1969 era - "Pine cones and holly berries," or "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas." This one song has stayed with me over the years. The LP album I recall did not identify the singers and conductor and I always wondered who they were. It was simply entitled "The Drummer Boy." That one medley is one of my all time favorites! It was the last song on that album and was a medley of "Pine cones," and briefly "Jingle Bells," then the finale "We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!" It was very Classic and Joyful with clear voices and bass instruments with a minimum of echo! If you love choral music as I do you, this album becomes more endearing over time. I think all Harry Simeone and Katherine K. Davis albums are classic and should each be offered on CD.
A classic.......2006-01-02
My wife remembers this album from her childhood. We bought an LP recording of it shortly after we were married in 1969. When LPs faded from the scene and CDs became the standard medium, we bought a copy in that format. I have given a copy of it as a gift to my secretary. It belongs in the library of all who like tradtional Christmas music.

Great Choral Singing!.......2005-05-31
The tone of this choir is fabulous! Finally, we are able to hear some of the late 20th century choral "standards" sung with a full, rich sound (like adults are supposed to sound, the uninformed and amaturish comment by the reviewer from MN not withstanding). When will these narrow minded and vocally challanged choral singers and directors realize that vibrato is a NATURAL and necessary component for proper and healthy singing?! The beauty of the harmonies and dissonances come THROUGH proper resonance, and proper resonace can only be achieved through a voice that is free to vibrate (vibrato) healthily. This choir achieves this and produces beautiful and vibrant choral tone.
P.S. The following is in response to Blue Suede Schubert:
updated 8/30/05: I usually don't respond to negative comments on my often very opinionated reviews (why try to sugar-coat when that is neither helpful nor intelligent?) But I must respond to the above mentioned reviewer. I do more than "fancy" myself a choral expert. I AM an expert on choral techniques, traditions and styles. I am originally from Minnesota, which for all intesive purposes, has the most established choral traditions and history in the country. The accapella choral tradtion had its beginings there, for heaven's sake! I sang in one of the nation's top choirs and am now a professional opera singer. I have listened and extensively studied all choral "schools," so to speak; anywhere from Robert Shaw and Roger Wagner to Dale Warland and the Lutheran college accapella choral tradition. I think that qualifies me to render quite an acurate opinion, wouldn't you think?!!
9/14/05: Final Response to blue suede Schubert:
I don't know what your problem is. I assume you're a frustrated singer who doesn't "quite make the cut," so to speak. I'm sure all of the readers are very impressed that you corrected my accidental mispelling and for the fact that you were able to give the actual definition for a(space)cappella. That's quite impressive. However, I think I'd rather be someone who actually CAN and who DOES sing (me) rather than someone who can only attempt to write about it (you).
Not That Bad.......2004-01-03
Although "Water Night" is not all that good, the rest of the CD is. Some of my favorites are "Let All the World," "Psalm 117," "Welsh Lullaby," and "J'entends le moulin." "Tema" is a piece I have performed with my high school choir. When done well, it can be quite effective. It's not a perfect CD, but it deserves more that one star!
(For excellent recording of "Water Night," I suggest the Eric Whitacre sung by the BYU Singers: The Complete A Capella Works, which can be bought off of this site.)
Mediocre singing at best.......2000-12-27
This recording is mediocre at best. While the University of Miami Chorale is a fantastic choir, it should shy away from certain types of songs. It doesn't have the broad range of sounds that the far better BYU Singers or Concordia Choir does. 'Water Night' is sung well, but not appropriately. This song should be sung without vibrato or it destroys the effect of the setting. The dissonaces that vibrato creates takes away from the beauty of the dissonances that Mr. Whitacre has written. Unfortunately for the listener, vibrato is used in this recording and destroys nearly all of the beauty contained in this wonderful piece. Aside from that, the rest of the CD is neither good nor bad. Discerning listeners will hear the differences. The music of Rene Clausen is treated well in this recording, but not understood completely by choir or conductor. If you're looking for a recording of 'Water Night', unfortunately this is the only one on the mass market right now and sometimes beggars can't be choosers so buy at your own risk.
Good Stuff!.......2000-04-25
I have really enjoyed this CD. Some of the pieces are a little loud- drums and stuff like that- but the effects are really nice. The Miami Chorale sounds great. My favorite is Water Night...

Breathtakingly beautiful!.......2007-01-15
Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful.
We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico!
It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.
Pretty good, though maybe not 'ultimate'.......2004-10-08
If you love Christmas as much as I do, you will probably enjoy this album. It features plenty of standard favorites - especially sung by the MoTab, who seem to be a holiday staple. I probably wouldn't pay $17.95 just to hear songs like 'The Little Drummer Boy' of 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas.'
What makes this compillation interesting is the liberal sprinkling of less traditional - or, anyway, less well-known - classical pieces. Vivaldi's 'Gloria', Corelli's 'Christmas Concerto', and the opera 'Hansel and Gretel' all make an appearance. The standout, in my mind, is the ethereally beautiful 'Watt's Cradle Hymn,' which I have never seen or heard anywhere else - that one song alone makes this album worth a listen.
Not ultimate, but truly classical.......2003-11-19
Good mix of the expected ("Silent Night", "O Come All Ye Faithful", etc) and the unexpected (the Vivaldi Gloria, Gabrieli, Schutz). Kudos to the Sony team for uniform clarity & quality of sound, despite source material from 1959 through 1998. Word to the wise: the performance of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" credited to Marilyn Horne is actually by Eileen Farrell from her excellent "Carols for Christmas Eve" release. No disrespect to Ms Horne, who is well represented by two performances with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. If you're truly a classical music fan but don't mind a traditional carol or two, this is an excellent buy.
