On Offerings, vocalist Azam Ali and percussionist Greg Ellis take one step beyond the repertoire of Indian-flavored, hymn-like songs created on their widely adored debut CD Sunyata. Again Ali radiantly sings soothing melodies of words in no language other than her own spontaneous emotion. A bit reminiscent of Madredeus's Teresa Salguiero, her tone is melancholic and soulful, but her chanting unrolls a Persian tapestry woven of her hammered dulcimer and Ellis's cadences on tabla, udu, frame drum, zils, and more. Guest artists Steve Stevens (nylon-string guitar), cellist Hans Christian, singer Omar Faruk Tekbilek, and violinist Nabil Azzam deepen the Middle Eastern hues. By the CD's end, listeners will understand why this inspired duo has named themselves the Farsi word for "vessel." --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars A sweet album of praise.......2006-12-18

At first, I was a little disappointed with this album, I'll admit...because I was expecting some great rock songs that I could belt out (way off-key!) in my car. But after giving it another chance without any expectations, I realized that the songs are beautiful, catchy, very well-written, and fill you up with good feelings and inspiration. My favorites are "I want to sing a song" and "Offering". If you like Third Day's "Wire" CD, then purchase this with an open mind. You will still love it, but for different reasons. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Be prepared to be addicted........2006-11-10

I got this CD to become more familiar with some of the songs before seeing them at Autumn Blaze. I cannot stop playing this CD. It helps with road rage! :) How can you yell and curse someone when you're singing, "I want to sing a song for you Lord?" I haven't been much of a shower singer until this CD, now just listening to it isn't enough, I'm singing all the songs in the shower too. I love this CD! I love this band!

4 out of 5 stars Superb worship.......2006-07-19

Third Day set high standards for themselves when they released Offerings: A Worship Album, in 2000. The second in what will hopefully become a series of worship releases by the Georgia quintet, All I Have To Give equals, if not surpasses, the first effort. With six new studio tracks and six live concert cuts, this CD will gratify fans who are eager for exclusive material, and inspire thousands to sing along in worship to God.

The CD includes covers of songs by Rich Mullins, Waterdeep, and even a brief homage to U2. Each track exudes Third Day's trademark southern-rock sound, with passionate vocals by Mac Powell. The new songs, apparently recorded within a span of eight days, are elegant in their simplicity. In fact, one of these songs, "Offering," was inspired by their first worship release! Special guest appearance by Michael Tait (formerly of dc Talk) on the ever-popular "God of Wonders" is also a pleasant surprise.

Perhaps the lone sore spot on this release is the inclusion of "Your Love Oh Lord," which was also on Offerings. Ever-inspiring as it was on the first release, it is the least of many tracks on this offering by Third Day that will leave listeners more on fire for God than before.

4 out of 5 stars Good follow-up to the first.......2006-04-07

This album is a great worshipful album, with mostly slow to medium tempo worship songs. "Creed" is probably the most uptempo song on the album, and I find it a bit jarring in the context of the album. It's a great song, but doesn't seem to "fit" where it is in the album.

This is not a great CD to rock out to, but I think it is a great Third Day CD, and the perfect companion to the first Offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Third Day Rocks!.......2006-02-24

I love everything that Third Day puts out. This worhip album is no exception. I found myself singing along with most of the songs and smiling and worshipping, too. Great buy!

In the afterglow of capturing a Dove award for "Rock album of the year" with their southern-rock grinder Time, Third Day has now stepped in line with the worship movement and released Offerings: A Worship Album. Interspersed among five new songs, this album contains several live concert tracks, including the favorite "Your Love, Oh Lord." Even though the new songs demonstrate Third Day's superior creativity and talent, the live tracks are the forte of this project. The undulating dynamics exhibit the band's unity as they work together to create a singular response to the Savior. As well, some of the tracks incorporate the sound of the worshiping audience, adding a congregational feel to the album. The lyrical content is similar to that of songs from a typical Sunday morning service. But these traditional expressions of faith are given new life by the resonating fervor of Mac Powell's lead vocal style. Third Day is known for being uncompromisingly God-centered with their music. This project uncovers that quality to its most extreme degree. --Israel Button

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-07-19

Awesome! That is the best description of this praise & worship CD from Third Day. My all-time favorite is "Saved". It's reminiscent of the old days of southern Christian music that really rocked the house! God bless Third Day and their music ministry. They use the music of today to express a message that has been relevant since before the dawn of man.

5 out of 5 stars Praise AND great guitar riffs!!.......2007-07-06

Love this album!! My favorite is Consuming Fire! I want to take guitar lessons just to learn the opening hook alone! I wish it were part of the Amazon sample so that new listeners of Third Day could hear it! But the sample lyrics the Amazon people chose to play is why Third Day rocks!

You'd have to be dead both literally and physically not to be moved by the Spirit behind this album. Hearing it in concert with the volume cranked really high takes you right to the crowded front row of the concert. How can you not raise your hands high in worship to this powerful and moving album?

"Thief" chokes me up EVERY time! The visuals you get while listening will stir your soul.

GREAT BAND - GREAT ALBUM - GREAT GOD!

4 out of 5 stars Rocky Live Worship with a Hidden Song.......2007-06-20

Normally I (age 35) prefer acoustic type praise like the first free worship CD from "Firefighters for Christ", but this album is starting to grow on me. Most of the songs are great, especially the hidden one, "Don't Let Me Go". It is located after a long 2 minute pause at the end of the "Love Song" track. Here are the Lyrics:

Don't Let Me Go (hidden track)
by Mark Lee, ©2000/
Take my heart and help me feel
Take my faith and make it real
Take my eyes and help me see all the love surrounding me/
Don't let me go
Hold me close to where you are
Don't let me go/
Take my heart take all of me
Take my loss and take my gain
Take my trial and take my pain
Take my life and let it be all that you have for me (end)

Most of the doctrine seems sound. Without the overbearing electric guitar, audience noise, band intro talking and 2 minute pause, it would be a 5 star CD.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff..........2006-06-13

I'm not a huge Third Day fan, and I find the worship album genre to be totally saturated. However, this album emerges near the top.

Quite frankly, I find just about every song on this recording to be memorable. My personal favorites are "All the Heavens" and "Love Song," which wrap things up admirably.

The live nature of several of the tracks are great, as we experience some of the beauty of a Third Day concert. (I saw them in concert years ago and found that experience to be much better than any of their other recordings besides this one.)

Third Day chose songs for this worship album with great spiritual depth, outstanding musical diversity, and great technical skill. And Mac Powell's voice is fantastic, as always.

If I could only choose one worship album for my collection, this one would certainly be in the running!!

5 out of 5 stars Not your Grandma's worship album.......2006-04-07

I love Third Day, and this album, while a different feel from their other, more "rock" cds is fantastic. I love worship music that doesn't feel drippy or trite, and this is it. From the beautiful "Love Song" to the powerful remake of "Agnus Dei" and the great cover of Dylan's "Saved" this is a picture perfect modern rock CD. The song "Thief", basically a narrative of the repentant man on the cross next to Jesus is very thought-provoking and moving, and don't miss the hidden track at the end.

4 out of 5 stars Imagine Mac Powell Singing Silent Night.......2007-03-30

This is an album that almost every big name christian artist is bound to release. That fact could have really hurt this album, except Third Day does it the best. Any fan of Third Day (and Christmas Music) will love this album. One thing keeps it for being perfect.... the origianl content isn't all that great. The songs that Mac or other members of the band, wrote are just generic or boring. With that said the track O Holy Night is the best version of that song and is worth the price of admission alone.

4 out of 5 stars Third Day is back for Christmas.......2007-01-13

This is a good Christmas CD. It is well balanced with classic carols and new Christmas songs. If you don't like Third Day, I doubt you will appreciate their Christmas album. But Third Day fans will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational music!.......2007-01-12

I LOVE this CD - it's my new favorite Christmas CD. Third Day has a wonderful, unique acoustical sound that makes for beautiful songs and arrangements. They praise God with their talent! Buy this - you'll be blessed.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!.......2007-01-10

this is the best Christmas album i've ever heard... and it's my favorite Third Day album now too. i haven't even taken it out of my cd player yet! :) i typically do not like the song O Holy Night (i know, i'm crazy) but this version is so beautiful and quickly became my favorite Christmas song ever. there isn't a song that i don't like on this cd! several of the songs are done live, and the audience participates in them some. some of the songs are sung in a traditional way, but still with the 'Third Day' signature sound. a few are changed up just a bit, but never so much that it takes away from the beauty of the song. it makes them even better! i highly recommend this cd!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Keeping the Christ in Christmas.......2007-01-10

This was a fantastic album. If you love Christmas music that keeps the "Christ" in Christmas, this is the way to go. It combines the powerful voice and southern rock sound of Third Day with the traditional christmas classics. They add some of their own new songs, too which I think are really good. I bought it for several friends, and they all loved it as well. My only problem was that the stores couldn't seem to keep it in stock, so I only managed to buy it online! I couldn't recommend it more highly.

5 out of 5 stars UNBELIEVABLE.......2007-04-07

this is a must have metal album. totally unique and awesome band, i just feel compelled to tell the world about these guys. matt barlowe has an awesome voice, and jon shaffer is an awesome musician. to describe their sound they sound like if iron maiden and old metallica joined forces. they are heavy and fast like metallica and melodic and epic like iron maiden. dante's inferno is the pinicle track on the album, an awesome 16 minute epic. I beseech each and every metal fan out there, if you have not heard this band before you need to start listening to them now. start out with this album, then go for night of the stormrider or dark saga.

5 out of 5 stars Hell awaits...I'm the Tour Guide!.......2006-11-17

First I'm going to say this is what Metal is supposed sound like! DARK, Heavy, Ripping... Take Judas Priest add some Iron Maiden and the Aggression of Slayer/Metallica ( Master of Puppets ), and you have Iced Earth! This band is one of the best things that happened to Metal! This cd is awesome, everysong Kills! but the Epic Matserpiece "DANTES INFERNO"
is why I bought this cd, my God what a ride...All i can say if you LOVE Metal like me you "HAVE" to buy this cd. 5 Stars Plus!!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good.......2006-11-03

Pretty good album, here. They did well with Barlow. You can tell, from a lot of IE's music throughout their entire catalog, that they're big thrash fans. It goes without saying. Dante's Inferno is undoubtedly the highlight here. Now, having read the book, this song obviously doesn't compare with one of the the classic stories of history. That said, this song is awesome. It fits together well, the music fits with the story, and it just flat out rocks. Beyond this song, the rest of the album is very good. The majority of the other songs are good without being standouts. Last December is the best of the middle tracks. The title track is awesome, 2nd to the ending track. Good intro, great throughout. The only real problem with the album, at least in the thrashy parts, is the huge Bay Area tribute. Most of the songs in the middle could be lifted from assorted Bay Area albums, excepting Barlow's vocals. Listen to the title track: one of the riffs was lifted straight from the song Master of Puppets (2:59). Besides the worship of other bands causing a drop in originality, the rest of the album is great. Check it out if you like thrash or power, although this is more on the thrashy side.

1 out of 5 stars dissapointment.......2006-08-11

there are two versions to this album and i ordered the version that was displayed and i was sent the wrong one!

5 out of 5 stars Iced Earth Reborn.......2006-07-14

Any of thoughts of Iced Earth being power metal quickly get shot down when listening to the great Burnt Offerings. First off, the lyrics are too dark, the vocals too powerful, and the overall presentation too thrashy for power metal. I hope this ends all comments from people who say Iced Earth is power metal. They are most definately not. Iced Earth is closer to Slayer, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden then Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, and Helloween.

Onto the album, this is nothing short of sick (in a good way) and is a great introduction to the "voice of Iced Earth", Matt Barlow. His vocals range from operatic like Bruce Dickinson, to powerful yells like Tom Araya. The guitar duties are amazing, handled masterfully from Jon Schaffer and Randall Shawver. The drummer is also good, as well as the bass.

Favorite Songs: Burnt Offerings, Brainwashed, and of course, the almighty Dantes Inferno.

Also check out Horrow Show, The Dark Saga, and Alive in Athens for more Iced Earth.

Like fingernails on a blackboard - the instruments, the singer's voice, the melodies.

5 out of 5 stars For When You Can't Find Your Head.......2004-12-21

It happens to the best of us. Reality impinges, takes a bite out of our equanimity, and makes off with our peace of mind. These are times when those that belive in an inner sanity struggle to find something that provides pure focus, music that is there for itself, with no distracting overtones.

Azam Ali has a rare talent - the ability to take the sounds and tones of her voice and, almost magically, make them into words and sentences completely free of meanings and hidden agendas. In this pure atmosphere, accompanied by the thoughtful percussion of her companion Greg Ellis, there is a place for reintegration as well as the appreciation of something beautiful.

Ali is Iranian, the melodies and structures of that land haunt Vas's music. It would, however, be unfair to classify this music as belonging to one region or culture. The are too adept to fall into that trap. The delicacy of the music arises in a careful weaving of eastern and western tradition. Guitar, cello and violin make the sound familiar and alien at the same time. I'm not a great percussion fan, but I find the edges added by Ellis's work add to the serenity and fascination of the music.

1 out of 5 stars Not good!.......2004-02-29

This CD has a nice picture on the front cover but the music is totally lacking of devotion which is quite disappointing.Listen to Krishna Das "Door to Faith" and feel the difference!or any of his music!
This CD from VAS is rated very good and I feel this is very misleading.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2003-12-31

Vocalist Azam Ali and percussionist Greg Ellis of Vas continue their emotive, improvisational explorations of voice and rhythm, taking up where their debut album "Sunyata" left off and adding new layers of expression. This time the duo broadens their venue to include guest musicians for a fuller and more diverse sound: cellist and sarangi player Hans Christian (of Rasa), Arabic violinist Nabil Azzam, guitarist Steve Stevens and flutist/percussionist/singer Omar Faruk Tekbilek. All are well chosen and fit in well with Vas's exotic, eastern style. The tempos of "Offerings" are somewhat more upbeat than those of "Sunyata", but all of the selections are still gentle rather than frenetic, offering grace and artistry in their restraint. Of particular note are the first track, "Svarga", which builds to a swirl of truly transcendental vocal multi-tracking, and "The Promise", a lovely, sweet song that features voice, cello and guitar and is more conventionally melodic (in a Western sense, that is) than most of Vas's repertoire. Hans Christian and his wife Kim Waters forms the duo Rasa, and their albums "Devotion", "Union" and "Shelter" have similarities to the work of Vas. The multitalented Omar Faruk Tekbilek also has many releases of his own.

5 out of 5 stars godlike.......2003-03-05

This cd is their most complex I think. The first song, Svarga, moves from very sparse droning & a reticent Persian violin to what is by far the most mind-blowing polyphony I've ever heard, & I have a large polyphony collection. After that the songs are all so beautiful, each with its own thriving soul. Vas is not Dead Can Dance, though. They never will be. The endlessly unravelling vocal harmonies of Azam Ali are a unique marvel. Greg Ellis's adeptness on tabla & other drums is great. The truth is the musical composition is more western than anything else, with worldly instruments & timeless energy. Greg drums with a western rhythmic sensibility. A great western rhythmic sensibility in their modern western music that's so unique in its themes & variations that it feels exotic. From driving, but serene, hammered dulcimer to very sparing, dark, almost ambient music, this cd is most highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars short stories to music..........2007-05-14

Gretchen has always been one of our best songwriters. Lucky that she's also been the most affecting interpreter of her own compositions. BURNT TOAST AND OFFERINGS adds another masterful collection of gorgeous, smart songs to her impressive catalog. She sounds like no one else. She writes like no one else. She's effusive with words yet spare in delivering them. The palette of instruments is exquisite: her and Doug Lancio's great guitars, subtle and moving use of strings, and thrilling appearances of an accordion, a concertina and a pennywhistle. But the heart, the joy and the tears start with her words--sung so poignantly with lots of quiet spaces between them for the listener to contemplate.

from "The Way You Move Me:"

YOU LEFT YOUR WORDS
ALL ACROSS MY MEMORY
YOU LEFT YOUR MARK
LIKE A BURNING BRAND
YOU LEFT YOUR FINGERPRINTS
ALL OVER ME
AND NOW YOU'RE EVERYWHERE I AM

IF I CRIED A THOUSAND TEARS
IF I LIVED A THOUSAND YEARS
I COULD NEVER FIND A WAY TO MAKE YOU SEE
I'LL NEVER UNDERSTAND THE WAY YOU MOVE ME

from "This Town:"

THIS TOWN IS A LOT LIKE ME
SADDER AND WISER THAN IT USED TO BE
A LITTLE SPRAWLED OUT, A LITTLE RUN DOWN
I WONDER WHAT'S GONNA BECOME OF THIS TOWN

ALL I WANNA DO TONIGHT IS KISS YOU IN THE STREET
SWAYING TO THE BEAT OF A RUSTY RADIO
ALL I WANNA DO IS FEEL YOUR ARMS AROUND ME TOO
PULLIN ON MY BODY LIKE AN UNDERTOW

THIS TOWN IS A LOT LIKE ME
A LITTLE COAT OF PAINT AND SOME TLC
AND SHE'LL LIGHT RIGHT UP IF YOU COME AROUND
YOU KNOW THAT YOU NEVER WANNA LEAVE THIS TOWN

BURNT TOAST AND OFFERINGS is filled with moments like these. Songwriting and the singer delivering the song don't get much better than this.

Inspired by her travels to Asia, Suzanne Ciani returns with her 11th release and a collection of lilting, sentimental originals. The title track, "Turning," is a catchy, ethereal piece somewhere between a Madonna ballad and an Enya song as sung by Chyi-Yu. The rest of the album uses mostly acoustic tools to create a fine fabric of lyrical music that's akin to Secret Garden and Jim Brickman. At times Ciani recalls the soul of the Paul Winter Consort with oboe, flute, and fretless bass daintily jamming in swirling trade winds of improvisation. Another enchantingly tender offering from this New Age master. --Karen Karleski

Album Description

Turning is Grammy-nominated and Indie-nominated for Best New Age Album.

Turning features Ciani's original melodies wrapped in the instrumentation of The Wave ensemble. Notable guests Paul McCandless of Oregon (oboe, horn), Teja Bell (guitar), Michael Manring (bass), Steve Kindler (violin), and Matt Eackle (flute) share the spotlight on this gathering of a dozen sparkling compositions.

Vocalist Chyu-Yu leads off with the sole vocal piece, an Enyaesque plea for a lover to return, reprised instrumentally later in the set. Flute and horn duets serenade listeners sweetly through "Ocean Avenue," while "I Believe in Love" and "Soaring" are rhapsodized by flutes and oboes. "Midnight Rendezvous" bends the genres between New Age-classical and smooth jazz when Ciani's piano and synths meld with cello and sensual sax.

5 out of 5 stars "Turning and swirling and whirling 'round you again".......2005-07-20

'Turning' was a 1999 Grammy Award nominee for best new age album, and deservedly so. Featuring Ciani's work in combination with a rather stellar cast (Paul McCandless from the group Oregon, Matt Eakle from the David Grisman Quartet, Michael Manring on bass, guitarist Teja Bell, violinist Steve Kindler, and cellist Joe Hébert. ?Most musicians would give their eyeteeth to have that kind of support, and the interplay between the musicians is only slightly short of spectacular (try 'If I Could' for starters).

This isn't Ciani's first album with this group ('Suzanne Ciani And The Wave Live!' came out in 1997) and they are clearly at ease with each other (listen to 'Yang Ming Shen'). There is one first on this album - Ciani's first song. 'Turning' is performed by Chyi-yu, a well-known Asian singer. It is a simple, romantic song with an endearing melody. Catchy enough that it is also presented as an instrumental in another cut. In a strange way it reminds me of a new age 'Greensleeves,' but it definitely works.

I could go one for quite a while - there are no bad tracks here. This is the first time I've encountered Ciani's music in ensemble and I'm genuinely impressed. Just as I was unexpectedly delighted by her ability on acoustic piano. Ciani really is talented, she has plenty of professional recognition, but has not always enjoys the popularity of some of her peers. 'Turning' is one of the albums she has ever done.

4 out of 5 stars whimsical and poetic.......2002-04-07

I have all of her CD's and enjoyed this one immensely. She is classic and elegant with soft whimsical and lyrical melodies that you catch yourself humming after the music is done. It is relaxing and calming. I enjoyed this CD and felt her music is maturing and improving

3 out of 5 stars Good but not her best........2001-01-04

I listened to this CD for the first time with great anticipation. I've followed Suzanne's recordings from her first "Seven Waves" and have carefully watched the evolution of her style over the years. With Dream Suite in 1995, I was thrilled to see how her style had matured and become diffused with classical influences, the spotlight being on the piano, by far the strongest vehicle of her talent. (Check out Pianissimo or Pianissimo II to see what I mean.) With her live recording, however, I was dissapointed to see her style taking yet another turn: this time more toward jazz. Her previous recordings had featured an occasional jazzy tune ("Driving," "Eagle," "Hotel Luna"), but jazz tunes were few. On her live recording, her superb tunes were still there, but "The Wave" brought a jazzy improv flavor that was new to her music and style.

Don't get me wrong. "Turning" has some beautiful, haunting music on it. The title Enya-like track with vocals is simply superb. But it appears that Suzanne has shifted the showcasing of her superb music from synthesizers and piano to a jazzy instrumental ensemble like The Wave. Most of the songs on his recording are dominated quite heavily by jazzy flute, violin, clarinet, and electronic bass; in fact, on many of the songs, Suzanne's beautiful piano playing simply gets lost in the background. As a result, each song sounds strangely like the song that came before it. Gone is Suzanne's signature synthesizer sound (listen to "Anthem" or "The Velocity of Love," for examples), which catapulted her to where she is today. Flute, clarinet, violin, and guitar are beatiful together; but their constant use as the primary musical vehicle wears thin by the end of this recording. The saxophone in "Midnight Rendezvous" is an example of the jazzy flavor dominating this recording.

For Suzanne's outstanding synthesizer music, pick up "The Private Music of Suzanne Ciani" or "Hotel Luna." Her exceptional artistry on the piano can be heard on "Pianissimo," "Pianissimo 2," and "Dream Suite" (my personal favorite).

5 out of 5 stars Suzanne Ciani's Turning Embraces the Soul.......2000-03-05

Suzanne Ciani's Turing is music that touches the human spirit. It is both reflective and inspirational. It carries the listener toward the inner sanctum of the soul and the infinite potential of the creative mind. Her 11th album might not have been created if she heeded the words of her mother who said, 'The world does not need another album'. Indeed we need this one! This CD is very timely because, as the talented Ciani says, she makes this album ". . . with the human desire to communicate with whomever will listen, to move perhaps from the very personal to the universal". In this work she has accomplished just that! (quotes are verbatim from the CD jacket)

5 out of 5 stars The BEST sounding audio clips EVER!.......2000-02-06

I am a composer, synthesist and sometimes an engineer - we indies wear many colorful hats - I even make my own gourmet coffe, but anyway - Turning has to be the internets most promising concept overall. Sorry guys, but some of you don't, know how to make a real audio clip like Suzanne. It sounds like really fine, unequalised 20-bit compression and no the usual AM-radio like quality of most artists work on the World Wide Web....Congratulations on your new album Suzanne!

Ralph Samuelson has been a disciplined student of the Japanese shakuhachi flute since 1969. On this solo flute recording, he shares the depth of what he has learned. His exploration of the classical repertoire includes the 10th-century work "Shin Kyorei," a piece that stands at the foundation of the spiritual study of shakuhachi. This is a meditative sound, focused on breath. Long, slow, and subtly varying tones evoke stillness. Like the Zen practice from which it emerges, this music is quiet and contemplative. Requiring patience, it is in no way rushed and is simply and starkly beautiful. --Jeff Grubb
