Book Description
What is the sound of the moon on the water? It is the music of utter stillness and complete spaciousness - the perfect reflection of self within the universe, and the universe within the self. With Moon on the Water, Stan Richardson offers two musical experiences. On the first CD, listeners enjoy the pure tones of the solo Shakuhachi, as it has been played for centuries. For the second CD, Richardson combines natural sounds recorded during his travels across the Japanese countryside - the rushing of water, the wind over waves, the singing of cranes - with the beauty of the bamboo flute.

Album Description
What is the sound of the moon on the water? It is the music of utter stillness and complete spaciousness--the perfect reflection of self within the universe, and the universe within the self. There is no finer instrument for capturing this music of Zen than the shakuhachi bamboo flute, the instrument which Stan Richardson has dedicated his life to master. With Moon on the Water, Richardson offers two musical experiences. On the first CD, listeners enjoy the pure tones of the solo shakuhachi, as it has been played for centuries. For the second CD, Stan Richardson combines natural sounds recorded during his travels across the Japanese countryside--the rushing of water, the wind over waves, the singing of cranes--with the beauty of the bamboo flute. Pure and elegant, intricate and subtle--Moon on the Water invokes the Zen mind, and makes for the perfect musical complement to massage and bodywork, yoga, and any moment of peaceful contemplation.Customer Reviews:

Contemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs (though this represents only one facet of a prolific career). And Rorem's masterful 1998 cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen would seem to justify that reputation, as does this marvelous anthology from the Rorem songbook of the past half-century. The composer is fond of dividing musicians into the "German" and the "French," clearly identifying himself with the latter for the elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that characterize his art. What other kind of sensibility could "through-compose" Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" in a deftly perfect 27 seconds? Fortunately, American lyric mezzo Susan Graham intuitively understands this expressive aspect, as does pianist-partner Malcolm Martineau. Graham is constantly attentive to the marriage of music and text in the 32 songs here and phrases their little worlds into being with grace and wit. She can shade to a sweet vanishing point or allow her voice to blossom, orchidlike, into a dazzling profusion of colors. Few of these songs, which draw on the poetry of Walt Whitman, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and many others, last more than two minutes. But their resonance lingers, whether in the haunting "Opus 101"--with its lean but potent string trio scoring--or the enigmatic "That Shadow, My Likeness" from Whitman. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:

An American Composer in Concert

Composer Tim Janis has long straddled the line between contemporary instrumental and classical music. With An American Composer in Concert, he further blurs that line. The first nine tracks of this disc were recorded by the Tim Janis Ensemble in the composer's studio. They're short, majestic, and relaxing instrumentals named after nature themes ("Cape Elizabeth," "The Fallen Leaves of Autumn," "Pacific Wind"). Things pick up slightly during the 10 live tracks that make up the second half of this disc. Recorded at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with the American Symphony Orchestra, these tracks feature luxuriant strings, the occasional pennywhistle solo, and one vocal track (a take on "Amazing Grace" with sweeping orchestrations). As with most Janis efforts, there's nothing groundbreaking here, just soothing music and pleasant melodies. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Splendid Live Performance from Modern Composer Tim Janis.......2003-04-24
The new tracks are a little repetitive in sound, but there is some quality music within them. Where the CD really takes off, however, is in the live section, which features renditions of his favourite pieces ably supported by the American Symphony Orchestra. Stand-out tracks include "Twin Lights", "Water's Edge" and my favourite of all, "Amazing Grace", featuring the powerful voice of Gwendolyn Leathers supported by some fabulous orchestration.
"White Mountain" deserves a mention of its own for its sheer excellence and beauty. Stunning penny-whistle playing!
These live tracks are taken from Janis's previous releases, including the excellent "Water's Edge" and the now unavailable "Flowers in October".
At over 70 minutes in length, you get a lot of music for your money.
If you enjoy melodic, soothing instrumental music played by a symphony orchestra, this CD may well be the one for you.
Highly recommended.

To Be Sung upon the Water: Song Cycles by Dominick Argento

Album Description
The disc includes the world premiere recording of Argento's Songs about Spring for voice and piano, based on poems by e.e. cummings. "This first recording . . . should serve as a model for all future performances," the composer says. Argento composed this song cycle (his first) while still an undergraduate at Baltimore's Peabody Institute of Music. Here, too, is the only available CD recording of Letters from Composers for voice and guitar. Based on letters and fragments of letters written by Chopin, Mozart, Schubert, Bach, Debussy, Puccini, and Schumann, they illustrate a wide range of personal problems having almost no relevance to their compositional careers. The musical settings show Argento's understanding of each composer's expressive style. To Be Sung Upon the Water (Wordsworth settings scored for high voice, clarinet, and piano) is available in only one other version -- a reissue from the 1970s. The cycle is noteworthy for the subtle and sensitive use of clarinet and bass clarinet (performed here by Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal clarinetist Larry Combs). The clarinet reappears in Vaughan Williams' Three Vocalises for Soprano and Clarinet, one of the composer's last works. Vaughan Williams' love of early English folk music is evident in the song selections from Along the Field, his settings of A.E. Housman poems for the unusual combination of voice and violin. These are the only available CD versions of these songs and vocalises. Miss Michaels studied composition with Argento at the University of Minnesota. They share a fondness for intimate vocal forms and a distinct literary sensibility. "Argento's works impress on the listeners a strong musical personality, a result of his being drawn perpetually to the human voice" (New Grove Dictionary of American Music). For her part, Miss Michaels told Fanfare magazine (September / October 1996) in an interview: "I've always been attracted to the literary impulse behind the music." Besides producing musical sounds, she wants to tell stories.Customer Reviews:
