5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Melodic Metal albums.......2007-02-16

Sure this is much more commercial than Marching Out, but several other reviewers fail to note that 'Trilogy' was very keyboard oriented and bridged the gap between 'Marching Out' and 'Odyssey'. Yngwie was changing his sound to fit the times and cranked out one serious masterpiece!

Joe Lynn Turner sounds absolutely amazing and Yngwie's playing is flawless. These are some excellent, hook-laden melodic rock tunes that need to be heard. I should also mention that the production on this album was heads and shoulders above the previous 3 albums!

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - the first shakes of the Malsteen mission.......2006-08-15

Odyssey is a strange twist of an album. It always felt to me that this album had tracks that suited the excellent Trilogy (Rising Force, Riot in the Dungeons, Crystal Ball) and others that seemed totally out of place such as the excremental Heaven Tonight.

Had Malmsteens next album been comprised of rock of the likes of Hold On and Dreaming (Tell Me) this album could of been viewed as a transition, yet the studio LP that followed was Eclipse which was a very mainstream rock album, not at all like the weird time signatures of Hold On or the overly keyboard heavy Deja Vu and Crystal Ball. Which makes this album sort of stand out as out of synch with what followed and what came after.

This album - featuring the much maligned Joe Lynn Turner on vox - is NOT the place for the newcomer to start on their Yngwie collection. It is for those who tried and liked Trilogy and Marching Out and Eclipse and want to explore further. For fans there are some gems here, such as the aforementioned Riot in the Dungeons and the great album.gig opener Rising Force and the often overlooked Faster than the Speed of Light. The latter track flying pell-mell to it's conclusion, full of firey vocals and great guitar work. There are also a couple of worthwhile instrumentals hera nd the production by Malmsteen and Jeff Glixman is bright and sparkly - no return to the slightly broody production of Marching Out. A flawed album not without it's high points.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful metal.......2006-05-06

Odyssey and Marching Out tie for the best Malmsteen albums. I like Odyssey for the catchy, melodic songs that just keep begging to be played over and over. Marching Out was a metal slaughter-fest that just plain rocked.

Although a little cheesy in places, Odyssey is just fun to listen to. So many memorable lyrics and great riffs, I just wish the lyrics could have been a little stronger. And the sound quality is superb. Only two other CDs seem as crisp and clear to me: Metallica's "Garage, Inc." and Candlemass's self-titled album. Every note comes through perfectly and the music sounds "full" and complete. This CD wraps you in sound. Very nice.

Every song on Odyssey is a masterpiece. Even the slow, thoughtful songs still sound "heavy" enough, but the music is emotionally moving at the same time. And Joe Lynn Turner is at his best on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Commercial, yes, but a masterpiece anyways........2006-04-21

This album arguably showcases Yngwie at the peak of his songwriting skills. Having shared the pen here with the gifted singer Joe Lynn Turner, the final result is a perfect mix of neoclassic-flavored shredding and soaring-but-radio-friendly melodic vocal lines. These are all great songs, whether you play them with a full backing band (like in the album) or just with a poor acoustic guitar. I guess that's what makes this album so transcendent to my ears: the songs in there stand on their own, no matter how they're played, and that certainly is a big plus.

In fact, what I like the most from this album is what many hardcore fans seem to hate. First of all, the change in style is a total success from a musical point of view, even if it's true that there's an explicit commercial intention. Secondly, Joe Lynn Turner does sound mellow, but he adds a lot of value to Malmsteen's music. Turner's perfect intonation and well-controlled voice is a present to anyone's ears. In addition, his huge range, expressiveness and beautiful tone are top notch. I list him in my top five vocalists of all times, really. Take for example the power ballad "Dreaming". Yeah, that's a love song and everything but... do you want a better example of "baroque & roll with tears"? Both Turner and Malmsteen gave the best from them on that song! Also listen carefully to "Hold On" - admittedly a very AOR theme. Do you want a better performance than *that*? Or take a look to the big arena rock airs on both "Heaven Tonight" and "Now is the Time". Ok, they sound tamed as hell, I agree... but you can't deny those also are two perfectly crafted pieces of music, aren't they? And all that is in big part possible thanks to the wonderful pipes of Joe Lynn Turner!

Anyway, if you liked "Marching Out" and "Trilogy" I don't think you should complain neither. There's also some material here for fans of the "more traditional" Yngwie - it's a commercial release, so it targets every taste, right? ;-) Thus, the opening "Rising Force" with its syncopated riffing, its power-metal-influenced melody and its frantic soloing is perhaps the perfect example of good old Malmsteen. Also "Riot in the Dungeons" sounds like the original Malmsteen we all love, as well as "Faster than the Speed of Light" and "Deja Vu" - though at a lesser degree in the later.

One thing is certainly missing in this album: a good instrumental. "Bite the Bullet" does show Malmsteen amazing tone and technique, but it's too short; and "Krakatau" lacks of melodic hooks, it's too thrashy, too rhythmic; and the solos sound like pure jam - amazing solos, yes, but they sound like completely self-complacent jamming. However, overall this is a masterfully interpreted and conceived release. It is the first time (in my records) that Yngwie dared to show us a slightly different side of his musical geniality. It was the first time he demonstrated he could evolve, perhaps thanks to the teamwork with Turner. That reason instantly takes a bow from me. It sincerely think "Odyssey" is the most refined and mature release from Yngwie Malmsteen, and that's why I give five stars to it. So, go for the most criminally underrated of all Malmsteen albums and give it a good try with wide open ears. I'm sure you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Legends arn't born every day.......2006-03-26

Yngwie Malmsteen had suffered an injury to his picking hand when he crashed his farrari, and also found out some record executives had swindled him bigtime. Fans wern't sure if his next album would hold up in the guitar god technique department... but the rest is history. This album blows flames out of the sides when you open it. The singer is the best ever, the keyboardist and drummer are twin brothers and Malmsteens chops and tone are holding the metal scene hostage with lethal weapons. He slaughters naysayers and burys them with taste. This is a five star neo classical extraviganza!!!

4 out of 5 stars Quite nice..........2007-01-18

I'm a PhD student and write alot. I like to go to coffee shops and put on my headphones to get serious writing done. Sometimes, I need to be in the grad lounge at school attempting to get work done. Good headphones and the right music are important. I like music with a good tempo and a mix that fills the space of audible sounds.

Govi is a staple on my iTunes shuffle. It's a wonderful acoustic counterpart to other faves like Steve Stevens. Great guitar work with nice flute and other instruments to fill in between the notes.

I like Govi's "Mosaico" a little better, so if you have to choose just one, skip this one and buy "Mosaico". Come back here when you want more.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar Odyssey review.......2007-01-06

Must have for Govi fans, his best to date in my opinion. For anyone not familiar w/ Govi, but loves guitar, give this CD a listen, you won't regret it. Everyone I've played it for flipped out and wanted to know who it was so they could get it. Great music to get you up and moving and soothing to relax to. One of my personal top 10 favorite CD's of all times!

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs and Sound .......2006-05-08

I regret not submitting this review years ago -- but better late than never. I believe that this CD, the second of three pinnacle releases (preceeded by Passion & Grace and followed by Andalusian Nights) showcases Govi's talents at his overall best in terms of musical composition, instrumental playing talent, and audiophile quality recording. Govi does a masterful job of blending his interpretation of traditional South American influenced music into a present day relaxing and uplifting experience. After my mostly good, and infrequent bad, days I feel much better after listening to this CD. High end sound systems play these songs at stunning quality, which shows Govi's dedication to perfection. Please play the 30 second snippets to hear for yourself, however, no computer speakers can reproduce the full spectrum of the music contained on this great CD. George M -- Phoenix, AZ

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Must Have.......2005-08-06

You can really tell Govi puts his heart into his work. He produces very beautiful music. This is a great album with some very uplifting tracks. I am happy to have some Govi in my collection. I also own Andalusian Nights and can recommend that as well.

5 out of 5 stars Govi, At His Best.......2004-09-21

We have all of Govi's CDs and to say one is better than another is a rather useless act of futility.

"Guitar Odyssey" is another of Govi's excellent works.

There is a mixture of joy and easy grace that makes this CD a real pleasure to listen to.

As usual with Govi, his technique is excellent and the engineering is outstanding.

I think that "Turquoise Gallon" is a wonderful piece of music.

"Dolphine Escort" is a very relaxed and pleasant piece of music that brings to mind beautiful beaches and blue-green water.

"Treasure Bay" is nothing but pure joy.

We have had this CD for almost two years and still enjoy it as much now, as the first time we listened to it.

4 out of 5 stars not his best.............his second best.........2007-02-23

while, in my opinion, this is not Moore's best work, it is every bit a 4, and a very good album. Mind's Eye, to me, is a superior offering, but Time Odyssey is a close second. there is just something about Mind's Eye that i can't explain. it's so awesome, that it makes anything Vinnie puts forth, have to live up to. unfortunately, many artists suffer this affliction. they spoil us with a release, and make all their later releases pale in comparison. however, this cd is very good as well. "while my guitar gently weeps" is so masterfully done, that it gives me chills when i listen to it. if you are a guitarist, then you will appreciate Moore's rendition of this Beatles' classic. it is nicely engineered, and the performances are on point. if it weren't for Mind's Eye, i would be proclaiming it's place at the top of VM's releases. however, it is a victim of having to live up to a masterpiece, which it does a very good job of. peace.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compositions + Great Skill = Great CD!.......2007-01-26

I had this on cassette tape way back when, and then replaced it with a CD... recently burned the CD to my mp3 player... it has been a constant for well over 10 years now. Meanwhile I've nearly forgotten that Malmsteen exists. The reason for this is that the songs here are so well constructed - the chording behind the main guitar line is what really takes you from your living room into the odyssey Vinnie Moore invites you on... (if you'll pardon the cheesy comment).

Then, on top of a basic chord structure that takes you somewhere interesting, add nearly the best neo-classical themes and some of the most brilliantly executed "shredding" you'll ever hear... and you just can't beat it. (Note, I won't say the "BEST"... there are guys out there more innovative or faster).... but adding all things together, this is timeless music. Vinnie Moore got it "just right" on this one: the best of his ample output in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Leaves Something to be Desired.......2006-12-25

Vinnie Moore has some great songs. His classical influences always shine in his music, but the compositions he played here frankly weren't very enjoyable. A notable exception is Pieces of a Picture, the 9th track. This song is just impressive, with complex intervals and a melody tying the whole piece together, this is definitely the high point of the album. I love Vinnie Moore for the accuracy of his playing, the sound of his guitar, and his classical influences, but I didn't like the songs he was playing on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars VINNIE MOORE IS AN ABSOLUTE MASTER..........2006-08-07

...of thoughtful, musical shreddery. You get those guitarists that can play unbelievably fast, yet play with no feel. Vinnie Moore however, can play unbelievably fast when he wants to, but always plays with so much beauty and feeling. This is a definate classic of instrumental guitar. As a musician you can't help but appreciate his amazing compositional abilities as well as mind blowing playing ability, so do your ears a favour and buy this album, and I guarantee you'll love it. Standout tracks: All, but especially 'Prelude/Into the Future', 'Message in a Dream', 'As Time Slips By','Race with Destiny', and 'April Sky'.

5 out of 5 stars The Best .......2006-06-13

Time Odyssey is the best work Vinnie has done. I rank this up there up Rising Force but more cleaner and progressive. It's a shame that vinnie ignores this release. The rest of his are more rock oriented, This is progrssive.

Former Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman wants to enlighten people about the great blues of America's musical past. Drawing on his stash of 1,300 albums, the two-CD set Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey makes a strong case for the lasting eloquence of the African American blues music recorded in the oppressive South during the Depression and on till 1951. (Wyman has also co-authored a history of the American blues called Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey: A Journey to Music's Heart & Soul.) Blues novitiates and devotees alike will be served well by Wyman's knowing selection of songs, 46 in all, covering an array of styles. Among his heroes are the famous (Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson) and semi-famous (Lonnie Johnson and Memphis Slim, to name two), as well as the unjustly forgotten (several pianists and cross-dressing singer Frankie "Half-Pint" Jaxon). --Frank-John Hadley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Bill Wyman's time machine! .......2004-12-24

January 30, 2003

When Bill Wyman left the Rolling Stones in the early `90's he claimed there were more important projects he wanted to work on including photography, art, and writing. Wyman was the first Stone to release solo albums that were released on Rolling Stones Records label.

Wyman has excelled in at least one post-Stones arena: writing. While his two books regarding his time as a Rolling Stone offer a sanitized glimpse behind the curtain, Wyman's book, `Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey' and the companion two CD set is nothing short of an excellent narrative of that great American art form, `the blues.' For a brief time a companion television piece also aired on satellite networks.

As an avid, albeit older, music fan, there is nothing I enjoy more than delving back into time and finding a rare gem recorded 50, 60, or 70 years ago. While its like admitting you have fleas on your first date, I have to confess that some of these recordings are so poor that any listening enjoyment is erased. Sure, all those 78 rpm's being transferred onto CD make it easier and the liner notes are fascinating, but even the Yazoo label often releases titles that are so marred with `snaps, crackles, and pops' that I can't bear repeated listening. Which brings me to the point of this column.

Do you remember when Columbia released the 2 disc Robert Johnson box set back in the very early `90's? Anyway, with the dawn of digital recordings, Columbia made the brief and untenable, yet true, boast that the box set recordings, since they had been remixed and remastered, were, "better than the original recordings." Listeners could distinctly hear Johnson rocking in a wooden chair while he recorded. Now I know someone, somewhere is going to tag me with the old lie, "I love the warmth of those old records." O.K. sure. But I like clarity. Wyman's companion two CD set release for `Blues Odyssey' is the finest example I have ever heard representing this era of the recording industry. To put a point on it, the two CD set is a compilation, 46 cuts in all, is of early period blues artists including Bessie Smith, Frank Stokes, Blind Willie McTell and Robert Johnson contemporary Charly Patton. Within the compact disc is a 22 page booklet with excellent liner notes regarding each artist represented on this collection. The Linear notes are a good indication of how excellent the Wyman's book was written.

The mists of the past are parting.

What Wyman has truly accomplished is to lend his name and credibility within the industry to create well deserved interest in the artists that are unquestionably the pioneers and bedrock of the music industry and rock music in particular. Through the use of video, the printed word, and digitally enhanced audio recordings, Wyman has created a veritable time machine that allows the serious music fan to truly experience this music as it sounded when it was originally recorded. Since purchasing this disc I have been trawling in the 1920's listening to music that is humorous, enlightening, and, "dadgumit" just darn great

3 out of 5 stars Good In Small Doses.......2002-11-24

This compilation of Bill Wyman's favorite blues songs gives a decent history of blues music. While listening to this music, it is quite interesting to note the influence it had on many rock n roll bands.

However, the versions presented here are a stark in arrangement. Although they are performed well, usually its just a guitar and a vocal or a piano and a vocal. A few instrumentals thrown in for good measure. Unfortuantely after a while it all sounds pretty similar in spite of some good performances.

Truthfully, I would prefer a smaller compilation of blues standards as opposed to this extensive batch. Nonetheless, big time fans of blues music might want to at least preview this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Wyman is giving Ken Burns a run for the money here.......2002-01-30

For all of you who enjoyed Ken Burns' epic Jazz series, former Stones bassist Bill Wyman follows it up here with his own study and insight on the musical genre that he obviously loves, the Blues. Besides the handsome coffee table book, this 2 CD set contains most of the legends of the American blues spread over 46 tracks, from Papa Charlie Jackson's 1925 recording of "All I Want is a Spoonful" to 1951 blues tracks from Elmore James and B.B. King. No, "The Thrill is Gone" isn't covered here nor are the newer blues artists like Robert Cray or Stevie Ray Vaughan, just the old masters.

One thing I was reminded of was that the blues did not begin with Robert Johnson who emerged in the mid-'30s. Of course! Just like rock and roll didn't begin with Elvis. Get this collection and check out Wyman's commentary on each of the artists. It's very informative and easy to get a grasp on what for many is an arcane musical genre.

And yes, as Wyman states, "the Blues are perfect however you feel."

5 out of 5 stars A Noteworthy Compilation.......2001-12-27

I'm rarely in someone's Amen Corner, but I can't disagree with anything the previous reviewer wrote. Rather, let me expand on it. The Rolling Stones, particularly in their salad days, were heavily influenced by black American blues as were many of their British contemporaries. Here the listener has the chance to hear 46 of the songs which influenced that generation of musicians and which touched Wyman in particular.
Bill Wyman has put together a fine group of old blues that feature a wide range of musicians, both famous and obscure, playing a wide range of blues styles. Rock fans who have never listened to traditional blues will recognize a number of these songs which have been covered by artists ranging from Van Morrison to John Mayall.
The 2-CD set includes an informative booklet containing short biographical sketches of each featured artist. It also contains many rare photos obtained from various sources.
Hats off to Bill Wyman! Blues Odyssey is a noteworthy compilation, very well remastered, that is worth every penny of its price. If you love the blues, buy this one today.

5 out of 5 stars Leave it to a Rolling Stone..........2001-12-12

Leave it to a Rolling Stone to assemble the most generous, distinctive collection of classic blues issued this year. I purchased this set on impulse because I love early blues recordings and heard that Bill Wyman, of the Rolling Stones, had just produced a broadcast series based on the lives and works of early blues musicians. To be honest, there aren't many early blues recordings on CD that have been as carefully researched or as beautifully remastered. There are two disks and 46 cuts on this bargain-priced collection, only about a third of which are performed by die-hard favorites like Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, Big Maceo, Lonnie Johnson, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Memphis Minnie and Blind Lemon Jefferson. The balance of the collection includes performances by musicians you may not have ever heard, or at least listened too very often, from Mamie Smith and Bo Carter to Casey Bill Weldon and Georgia White. But there isn't a bad cut in the bunch. As with most of Wyman's recorded projects, there is a distinctive, laid-back feel to the compilation. The music is intensely personal, and very listenable. Originally remastered in the UK by Denis Blackham, the warmth and presence of the collection is startling. Add to all of this a booklet that is handsome and informative, and I couldn't imagine a better way to spend 20 bucks. PS. You don't have to love the blues to enjoy most of these performances. Anyone who loves vintage jazz or roots music can dive right in. Very strongly recommended.

Album Description

Like his two previous efforts [The Candlelight Guitarist, aka Bradley Powell] once again effortlessly spins out relaxing instrumental music which is easy to embrace from the first listen. ...as gentle soothing background music (especially since it's enhanced with assorted nature sounds from the Pacific northwest and Laguna Beach, California), this is a near perfect listening experience. ...gentle melodicism, flowing with just enough energy but still infused with peace and a feeling of calm.
...
Powell can also inject a little liveliness (yet still subdued so as to not disturb the overall tone of the album), as he does on "Seven Sunflowers" which has a lilting playfulness to it. "Robin's Aria" is wistful and romantic, tinted with the glow from a setting sun perhaps, while the whimsically titled "My Imaginary Hammock" oozes a feeling of relaxing and even luxuriating in a pleasant state of laziness.
...
"Blackberry Courante" is one of my faves on the CD, with a fanciful air to it, as Powell's fingers dance lightly over the fretboard expressing such unbridled joy that it's hard to resist smiling. And one can only kick up one's heels at the aptly titled lucky "Teddy Bear's Joyful Jig (Gigue)." However, despite the recognizable classical flavor, acoustic guitar lovers who normally shy away from that type of music should not be dissuaded because, in Powell's sure hands, you may not even realize you're listening to music influenced from a long time ago.
...
His music is almost always positive in nature, even when there is a tint of melancholy or reflection. It's simply music that makes you feel good, period. ...when searching for the soundtrack to a relaxing afternoon...I don't think you could do much better than this wonderful album. Solidly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An Artist's Heart.......2007-04-05

"Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead." ~Louisa May Alcott

Guitar solos invite you into a place of deep relaxation where you can renew your spirit. Bradley Powell's "Sunflower Serenity" is the first in a series called Watercolor Odysey that explores life's journey.

This healing and warm melodious experience is filled with heart healing energy. Dreamy guitar takes center stage as a rich landscape of sounds creates a moment of reflection. The tracks melt beautifully together to create an escape into serenity.

Bradley Powell's flawless playing allows you to completely relax into sleep or relax into an evening of candlelight and romance. I've fallen into a peaceful sleep while listening to this music and have also spent relaxing afternoons reading while The Candlelight Guitarist wove an intricate tapestry of sounds to nurture my heart.

Bradley Powell's music soothes the soul and leads you into a tranquil space of musical paradise.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting & Relaxing Guitar Instrumentals.......2006-12-14

SUNFLOWER SERENITY has sixteen songs totalling over an hour of beautiful instrumental guitar melodies which are interspersed with soothing sounds from nature. The Candlelight Guitarist's guitar solos perfectly complement birdsongs, ocean waves, babbling brooks, and wind through trees. Listening to this album is immensely soothing and uplifting at the same time... the perfect music for getting or giving a massage, for a romantic dinner for two, for meditation, or for music to read by. Each song has its own fresh sound, yet all go together smoothly. The song titles are remniscent of spending a day in the garden, with themes revolving around flowers, birds, the hammock, hummingbirds, ladybugs and caterpillars, as the music transports us to a beautiful spring day in a sunny garden by the sea.

4 out of 5 stars Very serene and relaxing.......2006-12-09

This is the 3rd CD from "The Candlelight Guitarist," AKA Bradley Powell. Brad has a knack for putting together gentle, soothing guitar medleys which provide the perfect background or relaxation soundtrack. As with his other CDs, he combines his guitar solos with nature sounds, but I found latter to be less distinct here than in his previous offerings (especially the his first release, Music for Rest & Renewal, where the nature sounds are more prominent). I also found less of an individual character to each of the songs on this album. For example, although tracks 8-15 are labeled "Brown Bag Baroque Suite," to my ear, these songs were not particularly distinct from the other 8 tracks on the CD. One aspect that was unique to this CD (and the reason behind the "Watercolor Odyssey" name) was that Brad incorporates watercolor art created by his 85 year old mother into the design; the beautiful sunflower images lend a distinctly personal aspect to this album. Overall, this is another solid offering from The Candlelight Guitarist and one that is likely to be enjoyed by fans of his previous work.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Album.......2006-12-04

Bradley Powell creates another Acoustic Relaxing Guitar based album with natural sounds that are a Pure reflection of Atmosphere&very comforting.very pure tradtional sounds&very re-freshing to the Ears. a Nice collection of Songs.

5 out of 5 stars Dreamy.......2006-11-16

This 3rd cd by Brad Powell does not disappoint. From beginning to end this cd is an absolute treasure. If you are looking for an artist who can transport you to a place of peace and relaxation then this is it. In fact, the cover artwork says it all. Beautiful...beautiful...beautiful...!

Kim is my most favorite violinist, and this CD is just comparable with Kim's work 17 years before, "Violin Voyager", with a more "mature" feeling.
Should buy. Deserve for the waiting (I waited for the shipment from Amazon for almost two months)!

5 out of 5 stars Loved this album.......2005-12-07

Unlike other people who bash neo-classical guitar playing and support basic, only can play 3 chords rock music now in days, this album took skill and thought and talent. I recommend this to any guitar player who actually wants to learn how to play guitar with talent.

      1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2003-05-18

I can't recommend this record as I've heard it all in the past. Why people are still into 'neo-classical metal' music nowadays beggars belief. I can't recommend this record to any guitarist as there is nothing different in it.

5 out of 5 stars People that buy Stump's CDs & then complain are idiots........2002-10-29

Of course they're all non stop 80's style shredding from start to finish.Calling Stump an Yngwie clone is inaccurate, silly, & shows a serious lack of knowledge of the genre. If Stump is ripping from anyone it's Blackmore, not Yngwie. I've been playing for over 15 years & have been a shred junkie since the early 80's. I'm well versed in Yngwie & all the other usual suspects of the shred/neoclassical gengres. Stump has his own sound & style that is waaay more blues based than anything Yngwie does. If you like shred you'll love this CD. It rocks from the first track to the last, not a bad song in the bunch. You're tone deaf if you can't hear the emotion & passion in Stump's playing!

5 out of 5 stars Read well if you do not know JOE STUMP !.......2002-06-27

I will try to be short and clear about his "intermezzo"-album: you can hear different kind of feelings in the songs of JOE, and you will find out what him makes standing at 1°place-ranking above other guitarists like; Malmsteen,Satriani,V.Moore,Macalpine and others- for example: Malmsteen has the speed,Satriani has the technique,Moore has the feelings,Macalpine has the rhytm, others make music and try to play. JOE STUMP has it all!!! It takes your breath, makes you thrill, and you do not believe your ears and skin!!!!! This album is not his verry-best, but excellent to meet him! Also buy his other albums: 4°,3°,1° and 2°. Try to find his 3 unofficial other albums too: "GUITAR MASTER" is the best! If you really like excellent-clean (metal)guitar instrumentals with sensitive, speed, incredible technique, good songs, JOE STUMP is your hero!!!

        Album Description

"Hands of Time," on the Guitar Odyssey label, fully demonstrates Larry Pattis' unique combination of talents as composer, arranger, and master of the steel-string guitar. His heartfelt folk-oriented lyrical approach to the guitar, along with his classically inspired technique, provides for a CD that is filled with track after track of music that demands the listener's attention.

The compositions on “Hands of Time” are strong and confident, the guitar playing is rich with beautiful textures. It has been suggested that his playing and writing on this new collection of mostly original fingerstyle guitar works “reaches even beyond the potential suggested in the first CD.”

Ten stunningly original tracks, along with a heart-rending arrangement of Jay Ungar's fabulous “Ashokan Farewell,” make up the 40+ minutes of this all-solo guitar project.

"Pattis approaches every note with the ethics of a perfectionist, but without sacrificing the passionate center his compositions inhabit. You may find yourself wondering if guitar music has ever sounded this good." Salt Lake City Weekly
