This upgraded edition of Countryman's original soundtrack is packed with eight Wailers tracks, mostly from their '70s Island albums but also including the faster, pre-Burnin' "Small Axe." Better are offerings from Lee Perry, Toots and the Maytals, Steel Pulse, Aswad, and Dennis Brown. What's stranger: Willie Nelson singing lilting reggae melodies, or a Jamaican chestnut like "The Harder They Fall" set to an acoustic country arrangement, complete with Dobro? Given Nelson's well-publicized taste for ganja, it's not surprising he's also fond of the island's major musical export. The genre-straddling Countryman, replete with dub effects, skanking beats, ringing steel guitars, and Nelson's signature nylon-string picking, doesn't measure up to his earlier, artful Lost Highway releases. It's easy to understand why this project was shelved by Nelson's previous label for nine years. There are no musical sparks, and the buoyant rhythms trivialize the strong lyrics of Nelson classics like "Darkness on the Face of the Earth." But his voice is still mellow gold, and there are tunes--like his duet with reggae/R&B singer Toots Hibbert on Johnny Cash's "I'm a Worried Man" and his own somber reading of Jimmy Cliff's "Sitting in Limbo"--that tap into the souls of desperate men to extol the power of faith over adversity. Album Description

After nearly a decade of gestation, Willie Nelson's long-lost, and first, reggae set is at last complete. The seed of this project took root in late 1995, sprung from the mind of famed producer Don Was. Nelson and his manager Mark Rothbaum flew to Jamaica to meet with Island Records president and founder Chris Blackwell. Don had been speaking with both Blackwell and Nelson about the prospect of creating a reggae-infused country album and both men were intrigued. Blackwell was the ideal collaborator. Not only was he the person who introduced rock audiences to the world of reggae but likewise introduced them to Bob Marley. As a versatile, well-connected music aficionado, he could realize this marriage of country and reggae the way few others could.

In fact, the two genres are compatible in many ways, and not as distant stylistically as one might initially imagine. Toots Hibbert proved it with his triumphant version of "Country Roads" and the renown reggae group the Melodians were the first to turn the gospel/bluegrass classic "Rivers of Babylon," (also previously covered by Willie) into a full-on reggae classic. Perhaps it's not a coincidence that reggae is sometimes referred to as Jamaica's "country music," being that both forms have drawn similar lyrical content from everyday matters and share a foundation in spiritual and gospel music. Countryman is Willie's impassioned tribute to the upstroke sound of Jamaica, an irie voyage to the land of dub and dreadlocks. Willie takes a handful of his own classics and filters them through a reggae prism, peppering them with his nylon acoustic guitar, pedal steel, dobro, harmonica and the familiar comforts of country, while bringing drums and bass to the forefront, yard style.

I am not much of a country music fan. I lean more toward the harder stuff. But I have always loved Willie and also love all types of music from the Caribbean region (as I visit an island as often as I can). While on St. Lucia, we saw the video for The Harder They Come, and purchased the cd as soon as we returned to the states. The Willie Nelson/Reggae combination is great. Love it!

Willie can pull off almost anything.......2007-05-14

It may take a listen or two before you can really soak this in, but once you do, you'll be pleased....I was a bit skeptical of this combo at first, but Willie done good!

Willie can do any style justice.......2006-09-12

I'll make this review brief as there have been many that have covered what I'm writing on this right here. Willie is an American musical legend and this album lives up to the hype. I, being a reggae music afficianado, had many doubts about his pulling off this genre respectfully. Thankfully, I was surprised by this set. He has made the most listenable reggae-fusion album ever recorded to this date (yeah, that is what I wrote). Willie is more musically important than he has ever been in 2006. (with Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings gone). Long live Willie!!!!

Willie Nelson may smoke a lot of pot, but I still love everything he puts out. If pot were fighting to become legal right now, Willie Nelson would be its spokesman.

Has not left my CD player in months.......2006-06-17

This disc has lived in my CD player for months and I have no intention of removing it any time soon. I love Willie Nelsen and the juxtaposition of the broken-hearted country lyrics with the care-free reggae beat is great. Mickey Raphael adds some great harp. It reminds me of the reggae you hear in Hawaii in that it is sung straight rather than with a bunch of rasta-man posturing. He did several tunes from this disc the last time he came through town and they were every bit as good (though different) live. Kids, don't let your parents see the big 'ol ganja leaf on the cover!

A great collection of reggae greats and some that are more unknown. Listen to the disc all the way through and you will become mesmerized by the deep Reggae Beats. Some of Bob Marleys best songs along with some classics from more obscure reggae greats. A must for any collection of roots reggae.

Oooooh, Ahhhhh.......2005-05-01

This soundtrack is great because it includes all the full versions of the songs that are in the movie only for a few seconds. There's a song on here that I've been looking for everywhere called "Ooh! Aah!" by the Fabulous Five. And to the best of my knowledge you can't find that song anywhere else. I've been looking for that song ever since I heard it on ksbr in the late 80's(!) The whole cd's bomb tho' & there are so many classic tracks that you can't go wrong with this selection.

Easy Skankin'.......2003-11-10

I remember listening to this album (then on tape, of course) when I was a little kid, maybe three or four, in my dad's 1980 gold Subaru, bouncing around with my sister in the back of the station wagon. So naturally, this sountrack holds fond memories for me. But even now, when I play it for my friends, they're amazed at the quality of this music they've never even heard of. I happen to be a reggae buff, a huge one, so I could tell you of more obscure collections, but this one definitely rocks, without question. The movie, too, is incredibly worthwhile. I don't know if you can get it through Amazon (I remember a time when you could get it absolutely nowhere) but if you ever see it, be sure to pick it up. You might want to watch it a few times (it can be hard to understand at times) but it's more than just an action movie. It's deep, man. Dig it. And dig this album, if you haven't dug it already. It's totally worth it. Tubular.

whether you've seen the movie or not(it's a must)the music serves admirably as the perfect reggae primer for new reggae fans.of all the reggae collections(except,perhaps,'various reggae refreshers'(island)(incl 'night nurse').this is a cd i return to daily.i also listen to tool and panjabi mc.i believe that in one of the bob marley tracks, the artist is weeping for a moment.ain't no filler here.incidentally,wally badarou is a genius.long live toots n the maytalls!

the best roots reggae collection of all time.......2001-09-11

Yes, The Harder They Come was a break-out movie (and soundtrack) for reggae. And that is a great album, which you should pick up if you have any interest at all in reggae and the culture it came from. Countryman is an underrated soundrack, but one of my favorite reggae albums (and I have hundreds). If you haven't seen the movie, some of the dialogue and background sounds will seem a little weird (and maybe even scary), but the music can't be beat. You get some lesser-known material by Marley (some great songs) -- Small Axe, Natural Mystic, Pass It On -- and so so much more. This is REAL reggae, far superior from all the collections that are released and repackaged every year.

Not as good as Moog Indigo.......2007-04-18

I feel kinda cheated. The best songs were the same three that were available for free on Jean Jacques's website [...]
The other tracks were mostly just filler - Perrey doing what he can do the best - but they didn't quite reach Moog Indigo's status of uniqueness in my opinion. Crazy music nonetheless.

And it's impossible to be serious if you're listening to this -- strongly recommended to all you serious people!

worst music I have ever heard.......2007-01-08

This CD is the worst music I have ever heard. It ranks below elevator music. It even is worse then porn movie music. It is trite, poorly composed and sets my teeth on edge. It is worse then that infamous CD called classical pop. I pity the fool (myself included) that buys this CD.

Jean-Jacques Is Back, And In Fine Form!.......2007-01-04

2006 was a strange year, and at times, there wasn't much to be happy about. On the A-list of delightful experiences was THE HAPPY ELECTROPOP MUSIC MACHINE, a true comeback
CD for whimsical space age pop legend Jean-Jacques Perrey. It is also notable as the debut commercial recording release of the talented composer and musician Dana Countryman.

HEMM is clearly JJP's show, but Countryman's contributions are solid and essential to the project's success. The two musicians' manifesto was, simply put, to create a recording that would bring happiness to the world.

In a sense, this album is a forum for Perrey's unabashed return to the highly melodic, zany-sentimental material which he composed and recorded in the 1960s and '70s. Unfortunately, the electronic music genre he pioneered soon became plagued with non-musical
conceits. Gloom, doom and meandering experimentation replaced atmosphere, composition and melody.

HEMM gives the reins of electronic pop back to the man who humbly created them, 40-plus years ago.

I am familiar with the music of both gentlemen, and most of the compositions here are true collaborations. In some cases, Perrey would write the main theme, and Countryman then devised a second one, or vice versa. The results are seamless. I can pick out passages I know are DC's, and many of Perrey's musical ideas are evident.

A pleasant surprise for many listeners are the cover versions nestled between the many original tunes. A brilliant retooling of Leroy Anderson's "The Typewriter," and a novel medley of "Hernando's Hideaway" and "Tico Tico" harken back to the
glory days of space age pop. No one seems to revive these mid-century tunes anymore, and the playful, inventive renditions are truly refreshing.

The original tunes are consistently solid and pleasant. I'm hard pressed to single out a favorite. "Cosmic Cowboys and Indians," "Pizzicato Samba," "Forever Moog," "Whistling Cosmonauts" and the highly sentimental "Edith Von Aachenburg" are fine pieces. The
"Troll's Story" suite, one of JJP's most ambitious works to date, bears repeated listenings. It brims over with humor and fine music.

The album has several guest performers--Dick Hyman, Vinnie Bell, Robert Drasnin and two fine percussionists, Rick Bowen and Todd Parks. The arrangements and keyboard artistry of Mr. Countryman are the unheralded stars of this show. Countryman gives his all to offer sympathetic, full-bodied support to Perrey's musical ideas.

I have seldom seen a collaboration so mutually supportive and loving as Perrey and Countryman's, throughout this album. They succeeded in their goal. Each time I hear HEMM, I smile and the world's nonsense and fury is put into some perspective. Though this CD may not threaten Britney Spears' sales (which is a tragic truth of the music biz), it is a superior recording, invested in a lot of creativity and love. It will disarm, delight, and intrigue you, and you deserve to hear it.

WOW! Get your MOOG on!.......2006-12-13

This sucker is as catchy as any moog from the old school days. Jean-Jacques Perrey still has the touch, with an assist from Dana "Cool and Strange" Countryman.Keep up the good work fellas... Now if i could only find that elusive copy of Cool and Strange Magazine issue number 1!

This is one of the finest discs of Latin American orchestral music that you're ever likely to hear. The real discovery is Orbon's Tres Versiones Sinfonicas, a stunning three-movement suite that sounds a bit like Copland but with a more highly developed sense of form. If the first movement doesn't blow you away, then nothing can. Turn it up very loud, and let it rip! The other works are all well-known (except Estevez's Venezuelan landscape poem), and it's safe to say that these performances match or surpass the best of previous versions. The Venezuelan orchestra is a world-class ensemble, and Dorian has captured them in sound of supreme naturalness. --David Hurwitz

Fabulous Music From Latin America.......2000-12-06

This is a wonderful collection of music conducted by the late Eduardo Mata. The remarkable vitality of Tres Versiones Sinfonicas of Obon is equally matched by the Bachiana Brasilera No. 2 by Villa-Lobos. The quiet, haunting beauty of Melodia en la Llano by Estevez is a nocturne that brings the prairie of the title to life. Finally, the Sinfonia India of Chavez is a marvelous mix of Indian themes in a classical form.

real reggae.......2003-08-27

I never did see the movie, but remember hearing this soundtrack while a college freshman. I have since acquired the CD for my own enjoyment. It is full of the good, honest reggae that you don't hear played. The collection is diverse and smart and does not concentrate too much on one man or one band. It's a good starter's kit to anybody willing to extend their reggae collection outside of Marley's "Legend" or Tosh's "Legalize It".

I am thirty-two years old and a hardcore fan of reggae for a good fifteen years. Soundtrack to Countryman was my second reggae album I owned (Rastaman Vibration was my first stolen from my dad). The songs on this particular album are an absolute must have for any reggae enthusiasts just on importance of value alone. The songs Natural Mystic, Jah Live, Rat Race, Rebel Music (3 o'clock roadblock), Pass It On and Small Axe are legendary Marley tunes and are well worth the price of admission alone. The fact that the classic reggae songs Bam Bam, by Toots & The Maytals and Sound Systems by Steel Pulse (one of the greatest reggae bands ever) just makes the ownership of this CD that much sweeter. If you are just starting to get your feet wet in this genre of music I implore you to give this CD a go. Buy it now, buy it here, because believe me it is not an easy CD to find. I lost my copy of this album about five years ago and have been looking for it on CD ever since. I am happy I finally found it again and have it back in my collection thanks to Amazon.
