Book of Roses
Editorial Reviews

Chockablock stylistic collisions include virtuoso classical piano, medieval folk, blues-rock, the chant of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, pastoral orchestration and flamenco-frenzy, and that's merely within tracks 6-8. Not to damn it with faint praise, but this shapes up as a "Tubular Bells for the '90s. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:
His best album.......2006-07-29
The Book of Roses is Andreas' best album. I have them all but none is as diverse and entertaining as this is.
Where else do you hear music like this? Calming, soothing and yet remarkable! I totally recommend it!
castle music.......2006-07-22
From the very first sounds - perhaps a child running through hallways - to the moment at the beginning when the runner pushes open a window, mental pictures start up. I imagine the window looking out over a deep, lushly forested gorge on a bright shining day. Really what I see in my mind, throughout the entire CD, is a variation of a Maxfield Parrish painting, in a land where it only rains at night.
I've had fairly heated arguments with other Vollenweider fans about this CD - my favourite, with everything it brings to mind; as the title says, I can easily see castles with this music, and scholarly people tucked away in odd corners working on esoteric problems. Some of the backdrop stuff is great, too; when the dog runs up to the recording equipment, I always turn it way up so I can hear doggy laughter. Ladysmith Black Mambazo - a class act their own selves - adds an accent to the first half of the CD and the world feels brighter from their voices.
The first time I became aware of Andreas Vollenweider was from an appearance on the Tonight Show - when Johnny Carson was running things. I couldn't even guess at a year - but I have been a fan ever since. This CD trips off a little from the beaten path - as someone else said, you may want to try one of his more mainstream works first - but for folks familiar with his work, this shouldn't be that much of a surprise, and it is so peaceful.
Purchased CD.......2005-07-05
Purchased CD--it was new condition and arrived VERY fast. Would order from again
Andreas is Amazing!.......2004-05-13
I have been a fan of Andreas since I was 15 years old (now 27) and this is probably one of his most unique and diverse works. The variety of instruments and the haunting image it creates in my mind is beyond comprehension. Andreas is probably the most talented musician I have ever heard. It is true that this album does depart from his normal sound but it is such a unique and capturing sound that one can't help but be pulled into his work. If you aren"t a hard core Andreas Vollenweider fan (like me!), i would be hesitant to recommend it to you as your first Vollenweider album as I think "Down to the Moon" and "Dancing with the Lion" are better, but after hearing his earlier works, you'll be hooked! Andreas is simply awesome.
A "book" of great Vollenweider music.......2004-04-05
Book of Roses is yet another brilliant Vollenweider album, yet it's notably different from the rest of his works to date. There is a wide range of styles and a tremendous range of different instruments and sound effects used here. In addition to his electroacoutic harp, you hear orchestral music, vocals, hammer dulcimer, bassoon, flutes, harmonica, horns/brass instruments, piano, electric and acoustic guitars, accordion, bass, and many different types of percussion, e.g. hand clapping, chalk/crayon scratching, and various kinds of drums. In addition you hear many sound effects: pages turning in a book, footsteps, clocks ticking, dogs barking, birds chirping, bow and arrow, and many other special effects.
Even though this album is perhaps more "chopped up" into different songs (and four separate "chapters" in the book) it flows together nicely as do the rest of his albums and the songs are great to listen to. There is a diverse range of styles. It starts off with orchestral movements, then we have the cheery "Morning at Boma Park" and the smooth crayon-scratching rhythm of the title track, to the optomistic sounding South African "Passage to Promise" to the fast paced Spanish-guitar/harp piece "Jugglers in Obsidian." Track 13 "Hirzel" is my personal favorite, and is probably the most mainstream Vollenweider track on this CD. It is an upbeat song with a pop-rock feel and brings back a similar style and intensity of many of the songs from "Dancing With the Lion." The final track "Letters to a Young Rose" has a somewhat festive African feel and beat with several different kinds of percussion and is a perfect way to end the album IMO.
Bottom line: It may be different and more diverse from many of his previous works, with many different instruments and sound effects in addition to his harp, but "Book of Roses" is another must-have Vollenweider album.

An American Human League? Abba? Book of Love was that good, earning the comparisons while remaining a wholly unique outfit. A handful of singles as good as the highlights of this retrospective would improve current radio immeasurably. I Touch Roses' 15 album cuts and remixes drawn from the California group's Sire releases (1985-'93) reflect a love of pop as an art form and a wish to communicate rather than merely sell. Though linked to the synth-pop era, Book of Love was as much rooted in girl groups and other ostensibly throwaway stuff; in turn, cuts like the title track, "Boy," and "Sunny Day" remain as vibrant as "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" or "You Keep Me Hangin' On." Only a post-new wave outfit such as this, though, could've gotten away with an innocent Exorcist tribute such as "Tubular Bells," much less one that appears here adjacent to the ultrasweet "Counting the Rosaries." It's hardly nostalgia that makes this disc sound so fabulous: Book of Love's shouts and coos should appeal to anyone under, say, 90--anyone, that is, whose heart and tear ducts remain alive. --Rickey Wright

Review - I touch Roses CD.......2006-08-28
CD arrived in tact and well packaged. The music on the CD is wonderful.
A Fantastic Group - An Ok CD.......2006-05-16
The first Book of Love song I heard was Modigliani (Lost in Your Eyes)in a club back in the 80's. Since then I have loved this group. With dreamy vocals over rich synth pop music - Book of Love have created some of the best songs to come out of this genre.
I do think some other songs could have been included on this CD. Witchcraft & You Make Me Feel So Good are two that come to mind.
If you are purchasing your first Book of Love CD, this is a good sample of their music. But do try and get their first two CDs: Book of Love & Lullaby. These two albums have some great songs that are left off this compilation.
the best of book of love.......2006-05-06
book of love is a excellent band... many years ago I listened "pretty boys and pretty girls"...just terrific is a mix between Depeche Mode and Yazoo pure energy.
Ask the fans.......2005-10-27
I`ve been a book of love fan for over 20 years. The first song I ever heard was "Boy", here in Guayaquil my hometown. I borrowed it from a friend of mine, and I never returned it.
The first two albums (in the 80`s) were the best, even though I loved Candy Carol; Love bubble was good with Sound and Vision and Hunny Hunny being the best songs.
This greatest hits is missing some great singles such as Sound and vision, With a Little Love, Witchcraft, Miss Melancholy, Champagne wishes. Record companies and the bands should make a survey and ASK THE FANS for some of the songs to be included.
Erasure made a poll through their web site, before the European tour. They asked the fans to make a list of the songs to be played at every concert.
Just an idea.
A Very Good Sample of the All Time Hits.......2005-07-28
Let me preface my review by saying I have always been a fan of Book of Love since the eighties when I was in college, and I was fortunate enough to see them perform live on their Lullaby tour.
The band makes very catchy (and danceable) tunes. This group, in my mind, stands out from the rest of the Euro-synth pop craze of the 80s by having a female lead vocal, and by the band members being American. I especially enjoyed Susan's dreamy voice.
Listening to the song again now was like a trip down memory lane. I had forgotten many of the lyrics, and listening closely to them now, I finally realized some of the deeper message the band was trying to get across (AIDS, depression, etc).
Of the new releases, I especially enjoyed "In Your Eyes". It is in the same exact catchy mode of their first 2 albums.
P.S. since so many people are commenting about missing songs on this greatest hits compilation, I will put in my nomination for their Christmas special "We Three Kings"

Customer Reviews:
Cello Music.......2007-03-09
I had better expectations from this cd, but on the whole the music is great. Julian Lloyd Webber is a great cello player and the arrangements are very good. and is worth the money as it is a double album

The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Awesome musicality.......2006-07-26
This 4-CD set is a tribute to the concert career of the great Victoria de Los Angeles. The first 3 CDs show her totally at home in the art song of France and of her native Spain. In the French art songs, her silvery, creamy tone, her legendary legato and her perfect French diction make for wonderful and unforgettable performances. These include a sensual Scheherazade, magnificient singing in the Duparc songs and a phenomenal Poeme de L'amour et de la mer of Chausson (try to keep your eyes dry by the end of La mort de l'amour). In the Chausson, while de Los Angeles does not opt for the intensely Wagnerian approach, her sensitive singing more than does justice to the poetry and the feelings of the character. The Spanish songs showcase de Los Angeles at her most natural, flamboyant and attractive singing. The tunes are catchy, full of bouncy rhythms and De Los Angeles's fabulous voice never ceases to amaze. The 4th CD shows the wonderful chemistry between de Los angeles and the great Gerald Moore. While she does not erase memories of Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf in the Schubert selections, the Brahms songs are excellent and her Faure songs here are earth shaking in their elegance and refinement. The Italian and the famous Handel aria helps to prove De Los Angeles's reputation as an excellent bel canto singer. Her duets with Fischer-Dieskau are absolutely memorable and gorgeous.
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.
Fabulous? Yes!!!.......1999-09-13
The album is a marvelous sampling of this great singer's artistry. Her performances of the French and Spanish composers are something special. The De Falla "Seven Popular Folksongs" are powerful, passionate; the last song, "Jota," raised the hair on the back of my neck.
I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.
As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

Customer Reviews:
The best is wonderful, but there are a few duds.......2006-07-17
No portrait of a singer can satisfy all cmers, so EMI has shrugged its shoulders and tossed a bit of everything into the pot. (Without including any bonus tracks, one should note.) Hampson is without a doubt the successor to Fischer-Dieskau as the world's most famous operatic baritone. His strengths, like F-D's, are in song, especially American song. Seven of the 19 cuts here are American songs, which isn't enough. We don't really need Hampson's rather plodding and earnest Viennese operetta aria, nor his duet, "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" with the shrill Kim Criswell (to tell the truth, neither does very well). Two small slivers from Schumann's Dichterlieve cycle seems rather silly, too.
But that leaves a lot that's wonderful--all the American selections, the Rossini and Liszt songs, the aria form Korngold's Die Tote Stadt, and above all Hampson's rollicking, let-'er-rip rendition of Figaro's aria form the Barber of Seville. If this omnium gatherum entices listeners to bu the complete recordings, it will serve a very good purpose.
Beautiful Voice, Bad Choices.......2003-11-25
Short and Sweet.
I love listening to this beautiful baritone's voice, but I really don't like his choice of songs on this album. Beautiful Dreamer is so hackneyed and I can't stand to listen to it (also why I didn't buy the Stephen Foster album). I did like is choice of two classic lieder by Schumann. I would have chosen more lieder for a different album, he does great things with it. The Live recording of Largo al factotum from Barber is distracting with audience claps and poor mics for the recording. You can hear him walking away from the mics (fading in and out). The absolute worst choice is "Anything You Can Do" from Annie Get Your Gun. It sounds nice but I hate this song. The rest of the songs swing from Sappy awful to beautifully sung.
Bottom Line: Inconsistent and Not worth your money. He can do much better
A Great Showcase of Hampson's Voice and Artistry.......2002-02-23
Thomas Hampson is definitely one of the greatest artists on today's musical scene. This CD displays the beauty of Hampson's voice and the intelligence and artistry that he brings to a great variety of musical styles (German, French and Italian Opera; Italian, French and German art song, and American music). Among the highlights are the first selection, the beautiful "Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen" from DIE TOTE STADT by Korngold, sung with great control and melting pianissimos. The same can be said of the aria from TANNHAUSER. His live "Largo al Factotum" from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA is just virtuosistic, with effortless high notes (even a cadenza up to high C) and energetic vocal acting. In the art songs he is no less impressive, with total involvement in the style and mood of the songs, being particularly impressive "Oh, quand je dors" by Lizt. The American repertoire is also a delight. Hampson displays all kind of nuances for this repertoire, from the estatic quality of "Beautiful Dreamer" to the humor and bawdiness of "Where Is The Life that Late I Led". In summary, this is a delightful and eclectic souvenir from one of the most charismatic and intelligent singers of our time.
Comprehensive coverage of Hampson's range in song.......2001-11-01
This EMI disc, "Thomas Hampson, Portrait" is an excellent example of the wide range of this melliflous baritone. From the first German aria, Korngold's "Mein Sehnen, mein Wahnen" one of my personal favourites, to Jerome Kern's "The Last Time I saw Paris" you have great variety of opera, lieder and popular song offering you examples of Hampson's great talent. Buy and enjoy! Jill Whitburn

Customer Reviews:
Some lovely work, although not idiomatic French and with very English approach.......2007-06-01
One of the reviewers below truly does not like this collection. I can understand and do agree with some of his criticisms, but not with all.
Ann Murray is mostly in truly beautiful voice, especially on the first disc. No one would suggest her French is perfect (and it's not - it is very English), but her feeling (mostly) for the songs is often charming, and I enjoyed in particular her singing of "La pâquerette" and "Boléro", which moved in very sprightly fashion.
Anthony Rolfe Johnson's voice is inexplicably referred to by a reviewer below as a "dry little voice" and "completely lacking in charm or aural appeal". This is demonstrably not true - listen to the soundclips above, and you will hear a beautiful tenor voice in the classic modern English style. Anthony Rolfe Johnson has a sensitive approach, which admittedly does not always serve the music as well as it could, particularly where darker emotion is required or deeper passions could be shown - but goodness! The voice itself is delicious! Anything for which the requirement is a gorgeous sound and a feeling of tenderness is exactly what he does best.
(I must agree that his Italian is not good - it's very very British and makes scarcely an attempt at an Italian accent.)
Felicity Lott is my least favourite singer on this set. I particularly didn't like her first two offerings here - and I don't believe Ms Lott ever "gets" the style. Her French IS indeed heavily accented (school French is correct) - she liaises where she should, she follows the rules, but the flavour is always roast beef instead of crêpes Suzette. However, her voice is not ugly, and she certainly knows what she is singing. It's just that none of that knowledge really percolates into anything approaching the French style and an interpretation that reaches the listener. To understand what I mean, compare her version of "Mignon" with that sung by Sophie Marin-Dego on the CD "Vivent les vacances" - what a difference! (That album, by the way, is one I very highly recommend.)
The first CD of this set comprises only some of Gounod's French songs (sung by the two women), and the second CD consists entirely of the Biondina cycle (sung in Italian) and Gounod's "English" songs (sung in English). As Anthony Rolfe Johnson doesn't even sing any songs in French in this set, it's rather unfair to make any assumptions about his French. I thought the Biondina often sounded ravishing, and if I was left wishing for more urgency and variation in some of the songs in this cycle, that and the very English accent remain my sole caveats.
It was the English songs on this set that made me most uncomfortable. All three singers essay these songs in the rather bombastic style that has hamstrung English ballad singers throughout the last century. The "r"s are rolled (overly so); the approach is often coy and school-ma'am-ish; the timbres seem to slip into Savoy Opera G&S style... and in my opinion does not serve the music as well as would a more straightforward and elegant approach. It doesn't help that the lyrics are mostly pretty dreadful...! Why, oh why didn't Gounod use some better quality poetry?
Overall, it's undeniable that this is not a representation of French songs sung with impeccable French style. That's true. But the singing itself is often lovely, and certainly Graham Johnson's playing is beautiful - I do agree that the playing was sometimes stodgier than I felt it should be, but this reflects the tempi chosen by the singers.
In all, in spite of the stylistic lack and the English pronunciation of the French, this remains an often beautifully sung set, containing otherwise unavailable recordings of comparatively rare songs in the discography. (Why is Gounod so infrequently recorded? It is strange.) And for those reasons, this is a set worth having.
I would actually give this 3 and a half stars, but I do think 3 stars is a little unfair... so 4 stars let it be.
If one track is worth US$50. . ........2005-01-18
If one track is worth fifty bucks then you should definitely buy it. I am referring to the "Song of Spring" surely one of the few happy melodies out of Gounod and regrettably out of print in its master recording (E. Ameling, D. Baldwin, Soiree Francaise, 1985). Song of Spring pops up often in many critical studies: see, e.g., Camera Lucida, by R. Barthes who referred to it in his "wintergarten" passage. To this day, it still invites reflection. The passage of flats and diminished sevenths throughout the otherwise joyful song could only be interpolated by a composer and harmonist who, like J. Strauss, had lived life and the song still deserves, as the above critic suggests, to be sung by a younger woman speckled with the odor of chrysanthemums.
Gounod needs style, charm.......2004-12-05
Anybody who has heard one of the better Gounod songs sung by the likes of Reynaldo Hahn, Ninon Vallin, Charles Panzéra, Pierre Bernac or Gérard Souzay will know how extremely lovely and hard to sing they are!
They require a full technique-what Gérard Souzay has called "French bel canto"-to do justice to their delicate and elaborate melodies; a perfect sense of STYLE constructed on an idiomatic command of ennunciation; an elegant musicianship; last, but emphatically not least, they require CHARM, an elusive feeling impossible to coach.
Study a few of those older interpreters, and you will understand immediately, in a few measures, why some people-among them Maurice Ravel-thought Charles-Marie Gounod the father of French art song.
It is nice to have this collection by three respected British singers in superb, though somewhat overresonant, digital sound. They are musical, somewhat slack perfomances in high-school French. They totally lack any sense of what the music is about, however, or any of the sensuous elegance the music requires. The worst offender is the tenor, whose dry little voice-what is known in the operatic world as a tenorino comprimario-is completely lacking in charm or aural appeal. His Italian, in the Biondina cycle, is awful.
The women are a bit better, but sound none-too-young.
The pianist, who is the brain behind this whole series of Hyperion song recordings, is a good player with an ear for the lovely phrase, but tends to take everything far too slowly: the nascent love of the singer for the lovely Biondina, and his funereal lamentations for her demise, towards the end of the cycle, sound exactly alike! That is certainly NOT Gounod's fault.
Listen to Reynaldo Hahn's one recoding from this cycle, and you will understand immediately why this collection will really not do.
